It might sound like magic, but in February, a paralyzed (瘫痪的) patient was able to drink water on his own by controlling a special glove with his brain. The glove then acted as his hand. This was a success in brain-machine interface (BMI, 脑机接口) technology made by a team of Chinese scientists and doctors.
BMI refers to creating a connection between the human brain and external devices (外部设备), making communication between the brain and computers. For paralyzed people, BMI can allow them to move and do simple things by themselves.
On Oct 24, 2023, the team put a BMI chip (芯片) in the patient’s head. The chip can receive neural signals (神经信号) from the brain.
After three months of home recovery (康复) training, the patient can now use his brain signals to control a special glove powered by air pressure. This helps him do things like drinking water independently.
BMI technology usually means putting chips directly onto the patient’s brain. However, this project is minimally invasive (微创的), making sure the patient’s brain is not harmed. So it is an important breakthrough. It also uses a wireless power supply (无线电源), so the implanted (植入的) device doesn’t need a battery (电池).
Li Yuanning from Shanghai Tech University told CCTV News that BMI is now mainly used in the medical field to improve the lives of people with brain-related problems or speech difficulties.
In China, BMI technology is still in the early stages of research, with no products on the market yet. Some people are worried that tests may influence patients’ independence and even who they are. Ethical concerns (伦理问题) related to BMI also need to be addressed. These include whether the patient has a clear understanding of what is going on when they agree to take part in the test.
24.What is China’s recent success in BMI?
A.A BMI chip was successfully put into a patient's brain.
B.BMI helped a paralyzed patient drink water on his own.
C.A paralyzed patient can move freely with a BMI chip.
D.A paralyzed patient can communicate with computers.
25.What is the external device in the recent experiment?
A.A BMI chip. B.A neural signal.
C.The brain. D.An air pressure-powered glove.
26.What is the advantage of the new BMI technology?
A.It doesn’t need any power.
B.It doesn’t harm patients’ brains.
C.It understands patients’ needs correctly.
D.It helps people improve their speech skills.

Biking is a cheap, fun, and environmentally friendly way to get around. In New York City, there is a very special bike group.
Recycle-a-Bicycle is an organization that works to educate people about bikes and the environment. It also provides job training by teaching people—especially young people—how to build bikes. In just one year, Recycle-a-Bicycle can save up to 1,200 bicycles that would otherwise end up at the dump. These bikes are refurbished, then sold, or donated to someone who needs one. People can buy refurbished bikes at the Recycle-a-Bicycle stores.
Bikes that are too old to repair are broken up into parts, and the aluminum (铝) and steel is separated for recycling. This adds up to 12,000 pounds of metal recycled each year. The money raised from bike sales helps to fund Recycle-a-Bicycle’s youth and environmental programs. The programs include Bike Bonanzas, which offer free biking activities to families.
Recycle-a-Bicycle also offers training courses that teach people how to build and repair bikes. Through a program offered in some schools, students have the opportunity to earn their own bicycles. Students learn how to fix old bikes. Then they can volunteer their time in exchange for a bike of their own.
As well as refurbishing bikes, Recycle-a-Bicycle encourages recycled arts. They hold workshops that focus on turning old bike parts into art, crafts, and jewelry. Workshops that teach people how to maintain (保养) and repair their own bicycles are also very popular. The United Nations World Tourism Day is a day for thinking about tourism and its effects on people and places. It is celebrated every year on 27 September. On this day, people meet to discuss tourism and try to solve the problems that tourism creates. The meetings are organized by a different country or a group of countries every year.
Tourism is a huge industry. In China, more and more people are likely to travel during holidays. According to a survey in 2023, there are about 50,000 travelling companies. Among them, 1.6 million people are in service of Class-A Tourist Attractions.
Tourism has a lot of advantages and helps local areas much. It gets money from what visitors pay for rooms, food and things to remember. This gives jobs to local people. When tourists are interested in local culture, it gets shared and spreads. For example, they may watch local folk performances. With more tourists, roads and public things get nicer. The area becomes more well-known. Then, more money comes in to build new and better facilities (设施) like modern museums or theaters, which further attracts more visitors and helps the long-term development of the local area.
However, every coin has two sides. Tourism is not a completely positive thing, as well.
Some places receive millions of tourists a year, which creates problems for local people. Local people may feel not convenient with a large number of tourists on the roads, because it’s hard for local people to get to work or school. Tourism can be bad for the environment, too. Natural areas are destroyed to make space to build hotels and tourist facilities. More tourism means more crowds, noise, rubbish and pollution.
Importantly, tourists can help develop tourism in the long run by choosing more sustainable (可持续的) ways of visiting places to benefit the city and local people more. Sustainable tourism is great. Tourists can use less plastic, take green transport like bikes. What’s more, they should support local shops and hotels, respect local culture and protect nature. All of the above makes tourism good for a long time. Thus, everyone can benefit, and people can continue to enjoy visiting these places in the future.

C
Recycle-a-Bicycle is an organization that is working hard to educate people about both bikes and the importance of caring for the environment.

D.fixed to improve the appearance
28.According to the passage, which of the following things are done by Recycle-a-Bicycle?
①recycling not only old bikes but also arts
②donating or raising money by selling new bikes

B.advise bike owners to find other ways to deal with their bikes
C.introduce the practice and value of the organization Recycle-a-Bicycle

Ten years ago, we got a dog, which we named Angel. As she grew up and went through training, we realized that she, too, would be a good therapy dog (治疗犬).
Angel is ten now and works every week. She visits two hospitals a day, cares for the elderly and joins our library’ PAWS for Reading program. At the library, six to ten dogs lies on the floor and the kids pick a book to read to a dog. After they finish, they get a card with the dog’s picture and history. Angel has also helped out a children’s camp. She is so popular that everywhere we go, people know her, especially the kids she has worked with.
We have seen some very special things through our pet therapy work. I brought Angel to our local hospital to visit woman who had to stay in bed all day. We spent time with her every week. One day, my husband, Jack, got Angel up into chair next to the woman’s bed. He asked her if she wanted to give Angel a treat. She nodded, and Jack carefully placed the treat in her right hand. Angel gently took the treat. Then the woman raised her right hand and started petting Angel. Her friend was in the room and said, “She hasn’t been able to move that hand since she had her stroke (中风)!
After that, every time we saw the woman, she lifted her left hand. We’d tell her she had to use her right hand, and she would.
It seems proper that when Angel visits the hospital, she also plays tricks for the patients with her hands. The best one is when she lies on the floor, bows her head, and crosses her hands. She stays very still and doesn’t move until Jack says “Amen” and claps his hands. We taught her how to say bye-bye!
30.What do children do with therapy dogs?
A.Train them carefully. B.Read books to them.
C.Take pictures of them. D.Make cards for them.

A.Angel doesn’t know how to say bye-bye until today.
B.Angel stops playing tricks when she hears “Amen”.
C.Angel often plays her tricks for children at school.
D.Angel can play tricks for the patients with her hands.

34.When is the World Tourism Day celebrated?
35.How many travelling companies are there in China in 2023?
36.What can tourists do to help develop tourism in the long run?
37.Do you want to develop tourism in your hometown? Why or why not? (Please write two reasons.)
