Cooperation comes from friendship, friendship comes from trust, and trust comes from kindness. It’s easy to tell that kindness is very important. What is kindness then? To be exact, kindness is the quality of being friendly. If we give up our seats on the bus, help a classmate solve a math problem, or welcome a new member into a group activity, we are showing kindness. Actually, these acts are done without expectation of reward (回报).
We begin to realise that while helping others, we’re in fact helping ourselves. Showing kindness benefits us in different ways. It helps us know about ourselves. It develops our problem-solving skills. It also gives us the chance to be thankful.
We can never imagine the power of one simple act of kindness. It may change our day. And that day may change our week. That week may change the rest of the year—or even our whole life.
In short, we rise by lifting others.
Here are some teenagers’ acts of kindness.
Linda: I sat next to a new student at lunch. I was pleased because I made her day.
Kayla: In order to raise money and protect wild animals, I held a singing competition. Iwas proud of it.
Peter: I opened the door for an old lady. I felt happy because I could help other people.
1.What is kindness according to the text?
2.List two benefits of showing kindness.
3.What did Linda do to show her kindness?
4.What do you think of Peter’s act of kindness? Write 30 words or more.

In early days of history, being a good neighbor was very important. Neighbors helped one another build houses, and clear fields. Families depended on one another for friendship and entertainment.
But today in our cities and suburbs, friendly relationship between neighbors is not common. A family may not even know the other families that live next door to them. In an age of machines, each family may have its own car, TV set, and washing machine. People no longer depend on neighbors as much as they once did. Machines keep people apart in other ways. In our grandparents’ time, women met while they hung out the washing, and men stopped and talked while they mowed (割草)the lawns. Today, they cannot hear anything above the noise of their power lawn mowers. And women stay inside with their electrical dryers, which help dry their clothes. Children are inside watching their favorite TV shows. Is the idea of being a good neighbor old-fashioned?
In 1965, a power cut hit New York City, and many thousands of people were left helpless. Suddenly, everyone shared the same problem, and the largest city became a group of eight million neighbors. People with cars offered rides to those walking. Other people helped direct traffic. In elevators, people played word games and helped cheer each other up.
In times of trouble, people still depend on one another. As time goes on, people may once again feel that being a good neighbor is important.
1.Is friendly relationship between neighbors common in our cities and suburbs?
2.Why do people no longer depend on neighbors as much as they once did?
3.What do women use their electrical dryers to do?
4.What do you think of being a good neighbor? Why?

I’m Mike. My father works in Xizang. Last winter, I took the train to visit him. It was on the second day of Xizang’s New Year when I got there. I saw local people wearing their traditional clothes. A local friend of my father’s invited us to his home. When we arrived, a middle-aged man gave me a long scarf called “Hada”. In Xizang, people use it to express their best wishes. My father asked me to use two hands to receive it.
My father’s friend made some traditional dishes for us. We had butter tea and mutton. They were all delicious. We really had a great time there.

In China, lots of students often use much of their time to study their lessons, and don’t help with housework at home. Some students don’t think they need to do housework. Some parents don’t let their children do it. As a result, students are all in need of basic skills.
Luckily, things are changing. In 2021, many schools began to teach students life skills. Guangming Middle School in Shenyang built some farming clubs. There students learnt to plant vegetables. “At first I thought I could only grow some vegetables here, but in fact, I learnt a lot about vegetables,” said Cheng Bing, a girl at the school.
In Hope Middle School, students have a special life skill class: They learn to make dumplings in different kinds of shapes. “I couldn’t make dumplings before, but now I am good at doing it. I really love my life skill class. It’s my favorite class,” said Jia Yan, a boy at the school.
As we know, learning life skills is as important as learning Chinese and maths, because it helps us prepare for our future life. Boys and girls, do you help your parents do housework at home? If not, maybe you should get started now.
1.What do many Chinese students spend most time doing according to the text?
2.What club did Guangming Middle School build?
3.Why is learning life skills also important?
4.Is it necessary for students to do housework? Why or why not?

Chinese calligraphy (书法) was once considered an important part of the school curriculum (课程). However, for many reasons, some people think it’s less important to teach this art form at school now. In this article, I will look at both the pros (支持) and cons (反对) of learning Chinese calligraphy at school.
One reason why Chinese calligraphy should be learned at school is that it is an important form of cultural expression. Clearly, it is not just about practicing handwriting. It is also about connecting with a traditional Chinese art form. When students learn this art in class, they will become more interested in the works of famous Chinese artists.
Another reason is that it may help students to develop patience. At the times of high technology, students are getting less patient for traditional classroom learning. By introducing Chinese calligraphy into the classroom, students’ patience can be improved because they have to practice focusing on each brush movement.
From the above, it can be seen that there are clear advantages. However, others think there are some disadvantages. The first one is that it has little to do with students’ life. Living in a modern age, pens and paper will lose their importance by and by. So, wouldn’t it be a backward (倒退的) step if students were asked to spend their valuable time at school learning Chinese calligraphy?
The second argument against learning Chinese calligraphy at school is that it takes a long time to master. The time at school is better spent on more important subjects. After all, learning Chinese calligraphy can always be done as an after-school activity if students are really interested in it.
All in all, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. This special art form is one of China’s national treasures. It also helps to enrich students’ life and improve their sense of beauty. So without doubt, it is worth being included in the school curriculum.
1.What is the passage mainly about?
2.What are the reasons why Chinese calligraphy should be learned at school?
3.Does it take a long time to learn Chinese calligraphy?
4.Do you agree to learn Chinese calligraphy at school? Why or why not? Write 30 words or more.

As the saying goes, “Read ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles”. In modern society, almost everyone can go on a trip at any time if they want to. It’s a good choice for people to relax by traveling. What’s more, travelling is one of the best ways for learning. In fact, centuries ago, some famous people already traveled around China and they got a lot from exploration.
Xu Xiake, a geographer and writer in Ming dynasty, spent more than thirty years on the road four hundred years ago. When he was a child, Xu enjoyed reading books about Chinese mountains and rivers. He made a wish to see them when he grew up. With his mother’s encouragement, Xu Xiake traveled around China. He met with many difficulties on the road. But he never stopped travelling and writing.
Marco Polo, a businessman from Italy, is known as a travel king in the west. In 1271, Marco Polo with his father and uncle set foot on the road to China. It took him four years. Along the way, he met bad weathers, a shortage of food and water and so on. Macro Polo’s hard journey created one of the world’s first best sellers The Travels of Macro Polo. Medieval (中世纪的) readers fell in love with Polo’s wonderful descriptions of faraway lands and they got to know China and Middle Asia.
1.What can traveling help us according to Paragraph 1?
2.What was Xu Xiake in Ming dynasty?
3.Why did medieval readers like The Travels of Macro Polo?
4.Do you like traveling? Why or why not? (30 words or more)

When it comes to the letter grade on your test or homework, you might notice that there is no letter E. Have you ever thought about why that is so?
In the A, B, C, D and F grading system, the first four letters are typically considered passing grades. An F in this system simply stands for “fail”. The word “fail” happens to start with the letter F, which seems to leave out the letter E. The fact of the matter is that any letter can mean “not-passing” or “fail”. Some schools have U grade for “unsatisfactory”, or I grade for “incomplete”.
Even with all this said, we should also point out that E grade actually has been used pretty commonly throughout the history of letter grades in the US.
The first college in the US to use a letter grading system like the ones we use today is Mount Holyoke College. In 1897, they began to use the following grading scale:
A: 95~100% (excellent) B: 85~94% (good) C: 76~84% (fair)
D: 75% (barely passed) E: below 75% (failed)
We can see the inclusion of E instead of F.
Gradually, the letter grading system became more popular throughout the US. However, many schools decided to drop the E grade and go straight to F. There is no evidence (证据) to really support this, but one possible explanation is that teachers were worried that some students and parents might mistake E for “excellent”.
Why do we have letter grades? Well, part of the reason is that they made grading simpler during a time of great change for schools. As the 20th century began, growing cities and an increase in immigration led to larger school classrooms. Most teachers at that time thought this new letter grading system was an easy, fair and clear way to grade students.
Today, more and more people argue that letter grades don’t fully reflect (反映) students’ learning. However, as teachers try to improve grading methods, many parents continue to favor the letter grades they got as kids. They are familiar (熟悉) and easy for parents to understand. So while they might not be perfect, the letter grades probably aren’t going away any time soon.
1.What does an F stand for in the A, B, C, D and F grading system?
2.What is one possible explanation for dropping the E grade?
3.What did most teachers think of the letter grading system in the 20th century?
4.Which letter do you want in the A, B, C, D and F grading system? How can you get it? Write 30 words or more.

Rivers are one of our most important natural resources. Many of the world’s great cities are located on rivers, and almost every country has at least one river flowing through. That plays an important part in the lives of its people.
Most rivers begin in mountains and end in the oceans. Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the USA is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great, but it is also important for transportation. Ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. The greatest of all for navigation (航海), however, is the Amazon in Brazil. It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles upon it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food to eat, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and recreation for people who live along their banks. In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam (大坝) across a river and create a lake from behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to irrigate (灌溉) their field but also to make electricity for their homes and industries. However, large cities and industries that are located upon rivers often make problems. As the cities grow in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits of the natural resources.
1.How many rivers does almost every country have flowing through?
2.How long have people used water for transportation?
3.Why do engineers sometimes build a dam and create a lake?
4.Do you think it is important to protect water resources? Why or why not? Write 30 words or more.

Jackie,14 ★Sofia Marconi, my friend Bia’s Mum, is probably the most amazing person I know. She’s also extremely brave. She’s a wildlife photographer and she travels to some of the most dangerous places on Earth to take photos of the world’s most endangered animals. She’s quite famous and she’s already been on TV. Although she spends quite a bit of time away from home, she’s also a really cool Mum. Bia’s really lucky to have such a great Mum.

She is young. She’s one of the most active people I know. She spends a lot of her time doing things for charity. For example, she’s just done a parachute jump to raise money for a children’s charity in India. A parachute jump! At her age! She’s such a positive person, always seeing the good in other people. “Life is for living.” she tells me. I hope I have that much life in me when I’m her age.

My aunt had a terrible car accident. It left her in a wheelchair. From that day on, my uncle has devoted his time to looking after her and the family. But I have never heard him complain. Mars, Robots, Higher Prices and More
What will the world look like in 2045? I recently spoke with four American students, Caden Sorensen, Chandler Stark, Fatima Abdi and Noelani Velasco Polley, to get their thoughts on this question.
In 2045, the kids think, humans will be able to live on Mars. They suggest that everyone should spend a few years on the red planet to give the Earth a “rest”. “And when we come back, we must try not to pollute as much,” says Stark.
But Mars is not yet ready for human habitation (居住). The kids agree that immediate action must be taken to clean up the Earth. “It’s time to fix it now,” says Sorensen. “It’s not going to fix itself.”
The kids do not just care about progress in space exploration. They are also interested in the future jobs.
Stark hopes to compose (创作) music for TV shows one day. Abdi wants to be a business owner. Sorensen dreams about becoming a lawyer. Polley wants to be a scientist.
“I don’ t think there will be a lot of fast-food jobs,” said Abdi. She also thinks that everything is going to get a lot more expensive. “People will have to look for higher-paying jobs.”
Many jobs, the kids predict (预测), will be replaced by robots. “There’ll be no more factory jobs because robots can just do everything,” says Stark. But they believe the power to shape the future is in human hands. The world will be a better place, but of course, “we need to work hard, and we all need to learn to be kind to others.”
1.In the kids’opinion, where will humans be able to live in 2045?
2.What is Sorensen’s idea about the Earth?
3.Why does Stark say there will be no more factory jobs?
4.What do you think the world will look like in 2045? Write 30 words or more.

It’s easy to see the fun in buying a huge ice cream or going shopping with friends, but saving money can be even more exciting. That’s because saving creates chances and opens the door to all kinds of adventures.
The key to successful saving is setting a goal. Get a pen and paper, and write down how much it costs, then work out how much you can afford to save each week and how long it will take you to reach your goal. It’s important to be realistic (现实的) because you’ll soon get bored if you plan to save every single penny. Some weeks you might decide to save a little more than planned so that you can reach your goals even faster.
To avoid accidentally spending your savings, it’s a good idea to keep them separate from the rest of your money. You could do this by using a money box or a savings account (账户).
When you save your money in a savings account, you have the chance to earn interest (利息). This is money that a bank pays you for leaving the money there. Some parents set up a savings account because they want to put some money away for their kids’ future.
Once you konw about saving, you can set some more bigger goals. Perhaps you want to start saving for university, or you’d like to travel the world when you finish school.
If you’re new to saving, start off by thinking of some fun goals, like taking a vacation or going to a concert. Every penny you save brings you one step close r to reaching your goal—and what could be more exciting than that?
1.What is the key to successful saving?
2.How could you avoid accidentally spending your savings?
3.Why do some parents set up a savings account for kids?
4.If you get pocket money from your parents every week, will you consider setting up a savings account or spending it on things you like? Why? Write 30 words or more.

【答案】1.The passage is about both the pros and cons of learning Chinese calligraphy at school. 2.It is an important form of cultural expression and it may help students to develop patience. 3.Yes. 4.Yes, I agree to learn Chinese calligraphy at school. It helps students connect with Chinese culture, improves their patience and enriches their sense of beauty. It is also a unique national treasure worth preserving.

Along the way, he met bad weathers, a shortage of food and water and so on. Macro Polo’s hard journey created one of the world’s first best sellers The Travels of Macro Polo.
【答案】1.It stands for “fail”. 2.Teachers were worried that some students and parents might mistake E for “excellent”. 3.They thought it was an easy, fair, and clear way to grade students. 4.I want an A because it represents excellence. To get it, I will study hard, complete homework on time, and participate actively in class. Consistency and focus are key to achieving top grades.

Can you imagine being an inventor with one arm at the age of 10? Well, it’s possible, and Jordan Reeves is one example.
Jordan was born with a condition called limb (肢体) difference, as her left arm stopped growing before she was born. But she is active and outgoing, and has used every opportunity to share her story and encourage others.
She got attention when she took part in what she calls “Project Unicorn”. She created a superhero persona (角色) called “Glitter (闪光的) Girl”. She wanted to design a prosthetic (假体的) arm that could shoot glitter, as she hoped to share her joy with thousands of people with limb differences all around the world.
She continued to work with a professional designer as her idea gained popularity, and she went on to display her prototype (原型) on national television when she was only 11 years old. “When people hear about disabilities, they think, ‘Oh, that is so sad.’ But this turned it into something joyful.”
In the years since, Jordan has done a lot. For one, she created an online petition (请愿) to speak for kids with limb differences. In addition. Jordan was later asked to work with Mattel, the company known for creating the Barbie doll, and a doll was made in her likeness.
Not only has Jordan become an inventor and designer, but she has also become an inspirational speaker. Most recently, she started her own workshops called Design With Us. Youth with disabilities can find inspiration from their own lives and experiences to create original designs there.
