But the first time he saw one of his island’s iconic lemurs (狐猴) - those big-eyed, long-tailed animals that dance through the trees - it was love at first sight. On the forest hike where he first encountered lemurs, he saw traps set by people hunting them for meat. He also saw that lemur habitat was rapidly being destroyed and that many species faced the very real possibility of extinction. That led him to his life’s goal: “I feel a personal responsibility towards ensuring no more lemurs go extinct.” Dr. Ratsimbazafy’s conservation efforts took several forms. His research contributed to the store of knowledge about lemurs, providing information necessary for effective management. He was also an outspoken supporter of policies that would save Madagascar’s lemurs. That made him unpopular with powerful mining and criminal enterprises. His life has been threatened more than once. Finally, he became a tireless grassroots campaigner for Madagascar’s precious ecosystems. He could have a job anywhere, but he returned to Madagascar, one of the world’s poorest nations to work on community conservation. He wanted the Malagasy people, not outsiders, to take responsibility for protecting the island’s unique biodiversity. The NGO he established, which now has more than 20 Malagasy staff, works with desperately poor communities to explain conservation and teach alternative livelihoods. In December, we partnered with the California Academy of Sciences to offer supporters of both organizations an unforgettable expedition to Fiji. Over nine days on the island of Vanua Levu, our guests dived through the country’s thriving coral reefs, hiked winding forest trails, enjoyed the local culture and cuisine and learned more about Fiji’s fascinating marine life from the experts. The divers and snorkelers in attendance, including Academy scientists Dr. Meg Burke and Dr. Terry Gosliner, were awed by the colorful and abundant life they saw underwater and the local people’s commitment to protecting it. At a time when coral reefs around the world are in steep decline, places like Natewa Bay and the reefs off the coast of Savusavu offer signs of hope for these vitally important centers of biodiversity. Our group visited Nukubalavu Village, where in 2007 we funded the construction of a kindergarten in exchange for the creation of a 25,600-acre marine protected area. Nearly two decades later, it remains one of our most successful projects. The reserve is carefully guarded by locals and their work ensured that the local fishery remains sustainable. Hundreds of children from Nukubalavu and villages nearby have begun their education in the small school. This was our second trip in partnership with the Academy, following a successful trip to the Philippines in 2022. Both organizations’ commitment to grassroots conservation and responsible tourism make for an ideal partnership. The villagers warmly greeted our group. While using AI brings considerable benefits, it can also present challenges. The fact that medical facilities have access to and store so much protected health information may lead to caution among administrators in adopting AI in healthcare. Additional challenges to using AI include ethical and societal implications. Leaders in AI innovation are committing to the pursuit of responsible AI practices that are transparent, inclusive and accountable to help cultivate mindfulness about the potential impacts of AI on society and ensure advances in AI continue to benefit communities. “AI is developing quickly.
