On a summer trip to Maharashtra, India, Aryaman Khandelwal saw a little boy, no more than ten years old, carrying a bag of corn twice his size. “They had to work so hard to make do,” Khandelwal said, “Something needed to change. ”
Then a senior at Parkland High School, Khandelwal went on to design Get2Greater over the next couple of years, an AI-driven app to improve access to healthcare services. His efforts earned him the GloriaBarron Prize, which is given to young people with significant social initiatives.
The young man was passionate about improving healthcare in Maharashtra, a place that lacked qualified doctors and healthcare workers. Moreover, there were many quacks, who might quit studying after a year of medicine school and return home as “healthcare providers”.
Then Khandelwal was introduced to the a MAHAN Trust, a healthcare organization serving rural parts of Maharashtra. At the time, the MAHAN Trust was training village health workers to carry out basic medical tasks, such as taking measurements and transporting data to hospitals for review. Through them, Khandelwal learned that only 10 to 15 trained workers served a population of 200,000. While the method showed results, it was time-consuming and required significant improvement to handle the large volume of cases more efficiently.
That’s where Get2Greater came in — it separates the unhealthy from the healthy, so doctors can focus on more pressing cases. The app can record basic health-related data points, compile (汇编) them in order of priority and send them to doctors nearby. Khandelwal sent a tablet computer equipped with a basic software prototype (软件原型) to the MAHAN Trust and established a line of communication with healthcare workers there. “I asked them to provide feedback on the app,” he said.
Khandelwal’s proposal won him funding and after numerous trials, he created a Wi-Fi component so the devices could connect to the local hospitals. He has also been in talks with the UN to help take the device to other parts of the world.
4. What does the underlined word “quacks” in paragraph 3 refer to ?
A. Students who quit school. B. Doctors who are unqualified.
C. Nurses who work in hospitals. D. Professionals who help in healthcare work.
5. What was the challenge faced by the MAHAN Trust?
A. The difficulty in transporting data accurately.
B. Village health workers’ unwillingness to be trained.
C. Insufficient healthcare providers for vast communities.
D. Lack of medical equipment for performing medical tasks.
6. How does the app Get2Greater function?
A. By cutting healthcare costs for patients.
B. By processing data for doctors’ attention.
C. By automatically recording treatment process.
D. By identifying the symptoms quickly and correctly.
7. Which of the following can best describe Khandelwal?
A. Innovative and committed. B. Confident and modest.
C. Humble and determined. D. Generous and ambitious.
C
There’s a wise, highly accurate saying I’ve heard from track coaches over the years: The best workout for you is the one you least want to do. As a runner, I feel stressed about long intervals (长距离间歇训练). But I’ve survived the process enough times over the years to register just how good they are for me. They work wonders for my legs and lungs, and despite how tired I am when it’s over, I can always walk home with my head held high.
This kind of stress is called “eustress”. By definition, eustress is perceived as within our capacity to handle. Eustress arises from challenging yet manageable situations; it pushes us past our comfort zones, enhances our life satisfaction, and contributes to our psychological and physiological development.
Most of us are experts at eustress avoidance. In order to get through a workweek, we’d rather not rock the boat with anything too ambitious, let alone mildly frightening. But accepting and actively pursuing eustress is a good idea.
According to the Berkeley Well-Being Institute eustress promotes happy hormones (荷尔蒙), which makes sense: There’s an obvious excitement at play once you defeat your latest difficulty, But the impact is far-reaching, too — victories can help encourage hope. When you let eustress in, you’re encouraging yourself to view challenges as opportunities for growth, rather than threats. When we hug eustress, we approach difficult situations with a more positive outlook, enhancing our optimism about the future.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of eustress is its close link to the psychological concept of flow. The “flow state” is a studied phenomenon that accounts for an individual’s complete immersion (沉浸) in an activity. Some have called flow the happiest moments of life. Those who’ve studied the relationship between flow and eustress have called flow “the ultimate eustress experience”. It’s easier to enjoy your work when you feel fulfilled (满足的) by it. And if you want to feel fulfilled by it, well, it should stress you out a little.
Stress is painful, but eustress has the potential to be exciting. Try to acknowledge it, name it and even champion it.
8. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 1?
A. Offer advice to runners.
B. Give an example of eustress.
C. Show the widespread nature of stress.
D. Demonstrate the effectiveness of long intervals.
9. What is the author’s attitude towards eustress avoidance?
A. Supportive. B. Tolerant. C. Uncertain. D. Disapproving
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Why eustress is positive. B. The way to deal with eustress.
C. How eustress differs from stress. D. The impact of eustress on health.
11. What role does eustress play in achieving the flow state?
A. It facilitates entry into the flow state.
B. It shapes how the flow state is achieved.
C. It determines when the flow state happens
D. It follows the achievement of the flow state.
D
Superhighways of vessels (血管) beneath our skin transport blood and nutrients. These natural pathways branch out like tree limbs to help our body move food and oxygen to our organs. Our bodies make vessels naturally, but bioengineers also want to make them artificially. And now a team of engineers has found a cool new way to do that in the lab: They use ice.
To make the vessels, the engineers first needed a template (模板) from which to build the tissue. “Originally, we were trying to do this with wax (蜡),” says Ozdoganlar, a mechanical engineer who’s leading the new vessel-building project at Carnegie Mellon University. But wax proved “too soft,” he says. “And it’s not necessarily biocompatible (生物兼容的),” or suitable for use in the body. Then they thought of Elsa’s magic in a Disney movie Frozen.
Ice seemed like a good alternative to wax. It costs little and is readily available. And since it’s not poisonous, the body won’t reject it. And printing the ice template is simple. First, engineers program its shape into a 3-D printer. The printer then drops water onto a very cold surface. The printer repeats this process until the vessel’s shape is complete. In all, it takes less than 30 seconds. This icy vessel template is then encased in gelatin, a clear substance without any taste. Shining ultraviolet light on the gelatin hardens it as the ice melts away. What’s left are realistic-looking channels for blood to move through.
So far, the Carnegie Mellon team has tested the gel channels with endothelial cells. These are the cells that line the inner walls of blood vessels. In one experiment, those cells survived two weeks lining the artificial vessels. This is promising, but there is still a long way to go before such replacement vessels could be transplanted into people.
In the future, such artificial vessels could be used as part of lab-made organs to save the lives of people urgently awaiting donated organs for transplant. “This is really a game changer,” says Ozdoganlar.
12. What inspired the team of engineers to use ice instead?
A. The movie Frozen. B. Its low cost.
C. The new project. D. Its easy availability.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The differences between ice and wax.
B. The reason for printing the ice template.
C. The application of 3-D printing technology.
D. The advantages of ice as vessel printing stuff.
14. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. The lab can mass produce organs for use.
B. The technology is not yet mature at this point.
C. The artificial vessels will be put to use soon.
D The organ transplantation is easier to perform.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To sing high praise for engineers’ work.
B. To make known a technical innovation.
C. To promote vessels made by using ice.
D. To encourage technological innovation.

Will AI Replace Teachers?
The AI teacher is also known as the mechanical teacher. ___16___ It’s a computer or machine that can teach a student according to the level it’s programmed to teach.
While the thought of a reliable computer teaching your child might seem promising, an AI cannot adapt its teaching to its student during mid-lesson or read its student’s emotions, as a human teacher can. ___17___ It also cannot inspire its students as a human teacher can. The biggest benefit of the human teacher is that he or she gives students human connections they need.
There are some who believe that teachers will be completely replaced by robots by the year 2027. Human teachers do carry with them some disadvantages. Some teachers can be of poor character. Others can have a compromising character or not be as knowledgeable about particular subjects as they should be. ___18___
If you ask anyone the top qualities of a good teacher, an AI cannot meet these standards. They include friendly attitude, listening skills, respectful attitude, strong work ethic, patience, discipline skills, and so forth. AI cannot replace teachers. They cannot give a child what he or she needs. ___19___
___20___ It makes the human teacher’s job easier and helps her to be more efficient. This added efficiency allows him or her the time he or she needs to work more one-on-one with students to provide more adaptability and understanding for them. The two things are what an AI teacher would struggle to provide.
A. It is exactly what it sounds like.
B. However, this does not mean that AI is not necessary.
C. Frankly speaking, students have their own disadvantages, too.
D. Students long for the student-teacher bond, cooperation, and love.
E. Luckily, the good news is that AI shows more respect for teachers.
F. These drawbacks can be corrected, though, through proper monitoring.
G. It fails to simplify problems students have unless it’s programmed to do so.

Jackie Oelfke, a retired bank manager, pays great attention to developing children’s independent financial awareness from an early age. She bought a piggy bank (存钱罐) for every child. She even passed on the good tradition to her granddaughter. Sunshine Oelfke. When Sunshine was just born, Jackie Oelfke bought her a large piggy bank. They used the piggy bank as a toy. Later, when Sunshine grew older, they would pour out coins and play games. When they had small change, they took the coins back and put them in the money storage tank. enjoying it tirelessly. What they lack is not money, but a good habit. The little girl has always believed in this concept: even if you are rich, you should be careful with your money.
Two weeks ago, the 7-year-old girl emptied her piggy bank onto the living room floor after school and immediately started counting. Jackie thought she was playing as she carefully lined up the coins. but then she saw the girl put the coins into a plastic bag and place it in her backpack. Her mind was so busily engaged that she did not always know when she was silent.
“That aroused my curiosity,” Jackie said. “Nobody messes with the piggy bank.” After observing Sunshine at work for a few minutes longer. Jackie decided to find out why the little girl broke into her savings.
“What are you doing with that money?” Jackie asked her granddaughter with a smile.
“I’m taking it to school.” Sunshine replied without looking. She seemed to struggle before talking to her grandma. The little girl finally stated the real reason why she needed the money. “I’m going to take it for milk money. My friend Layla doesn’t get milk—her mum doesn’t have milk money and I do.”
As a special guest, Jackie once went to participate in activities organized at Sunshine’s school. Sunshine’s teacher, Rita Hausher, told her that many students in her class came from poor families, and she remembered having Layla. At that time, she had the idea of helping them, but she didn’t know how to do it more appropriately.

【答案】4. B 5. C 6. B 7. A
根据划线词前文“a place that lacked qualified doctors and healthcare workers(缺乏合格医生和保健工作者的地方)”和后文“who might quit studying after a year of medicine school and return home as ‘healthcare providers’.(他们可能在医学院学习一年后就辍学回家,然后以‘医疗服务提供者’自居)”可知,这个地方缺乏合格的医生,他们没有完成医学学习就开始提供医疗服务,显然是没有资质的。所以,划线词quacks指的是“没有资质的医生;江湖郎中”,与同义“Doctors who are unqualified.”。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“At the time, the MAHAN Trust was training village health workers to carry out basic medical tasks, such as taking measurements and transporting data to hospitals for review. Through them, Khandelwal learned that only 10 to 15 trained workers served a population of 200,000.(当时,MAHAN信托正在培训乡村卫生工作者执行基本医疗任务,例如测量和将数据传送到医院进行审查。通过他们,Khandelwal了解到只有10到15名训练有素的卫生工作者为20万人口服务)”可知,MAHAN信托面临的挑战是广大社区的医疗服务提供者不足。故选C项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“That’s where Get2Greater came in — it separates the unhealthy from the healthy, so doctors can focus on more pressing cases. The app can record basic health related data points, compile (汇编) them in order of priority and send them to doctors nearby.(这就是Get2Greater发挥作用的地方——它能将不健康的人与健康的人区分开来,这样医生就可以专注于更紧急的病例。该应用程序可以记录基本的健康相关数据点,按优先级汇编这些数据,并将其发送给附近的医生)”可知,Get2Greater应用程序通过处理数据让医生关注更紧急的病例来发挥作用。故选B项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Then a senior at Parkland High School, Khandelwal went on to design Get2Greater over the next couple of years, an AI driven app to improve access to healthcare services.(当时还是帕克兰高中高年级学生的Khandelwal,在接下来的几年里继续设计了Get2Greater,这是一款由人工智能驱动的应用程序,旨在改善医疗服务的可及性)”以及Khandelwal后续不断改进应用程序等一系列努力可知,他有创新精神且有坚定的决心和投入。所以他是创新且有奉献精神的。故选A项。
According to the Berkeley Well-Being Institute, eustress promotes happy hormones (荷尔蒙), which makes sense: There’s an obvious excitement at play once you defeat your latest difficulty, But the impact is far-reaching, too — victories can help encourage hope.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. A
由文章第一段中的“As a runner, I feel stressed about long intervals. But I’ve survived the process enough times over the years to register just how good they are for me. (作为一名跑步者,我对长距离间歇训练感到有压力。但这些年来,我已经经历过足够多次这样的过程,深知它们对我多么有益。)”可知,作者以自己跑步长距离间歇训练的例子,说明这种自己不想做的训练对自己是有益的,这就是良性压力的一个例子。故选B项。

When we hug eustress, we approach difficult situations with a more positive outlook, enhancing our optimism about the future. 故选A项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。由文章倒数第二段中“Perhaps the most interesting aspect of eustress is its close link to the psychological concept of flow.(良性压力最有趣的一个方面可能是它与心流这一心理概念的密切联系。)”以及本段中“Those who’ve studied the relationship between flow and eustress have called flow “the ultimate eustress experience.( 那些研究过心流与良性压力之间关系的人称心流为“终极良性压力体验”。)”可知,良性压力与心流状态有紧密联系,心流是“终极良性压力体验”,由此可推断,良性压力有助于进入心流状态。故选A项。
D. The organ transplantation is easier to perform.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To sing high praise for engineers’ work.
B. To make known a technical innovation.
C. To promote vessels made by using ice.
D. To encourage technological innovation.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. B

Jackie’s heart melted (融化) at Sunshine’s words. Choked with strong feelings, Jackie held her sweet granddaughter tightly in her arms. People must understand that actions speak louder than words. Last week, Jackie and Sunshine met with her teacher. Rita Hausher, and handed her the $30 the kindergartner had saved. There are 20 kids in Sunshine’s class and about half don’t get milk. It costs $0.45 a carton. The total adds up to about $180 a month for every child in the class to have milk every day.
Jackie posted a tearful video online to explain her granddaughter’s plan. To her surprise, dozens of people offered to donate to the cause. Within a week, Jackie raised more than $1,000. Now every student in Sunshine’s class can get free milk for the rest of the year. Jackie said Sunshine doesn’t see her kind act as a big deal. She was just trying to look out for her friends. “She doesn’t understand the effect she’s brought about,” Jackie said. “But now she knows she can do whatever she puts her mind to.”
