After travelling nearly 10,000 kilometers, a package from Britain arrived at the memorial hall for the Lisbon Maru incident on Dongji Island in Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province this month. Inside the package was a painting belonging to Graham Saxby, which was his gift to the fishermen on Dongji Island.
In October 1942, the Lisbon Maru, an armed Japanese cargo ship, was torpedoed (鱼雷击中) off the Zhoushan islands in Zhejiang, and it was the Americans who carried out this action. The ship was transporting some 1,800 British prisoners of war (POWs) from Hong Kong to Japan, among whom was Saxby’s father. While the ship was sinking, the POWs were confined (监禁) in the holds. As they tried to escape, many were shot by the Japanese. Local Chinese fishermen risked their lives during the shooting and rescued as many POWs as they could using their small boats. A total of 384 British POWs were rescued by the fishermen, for which the British government and people were deeply grateful. A special screening of the documentary The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru was held in London on August 15. Survivors recalled the incident in the film.
After learning that Saxby was going to gift the locals a painting. Wu Xiaofei a painter on Dongji Island, returned his friendship with a painting. “My grandfather was one of the fishermen who took part in the rescue, rowing a boat back and forth several times to rescue the POWs,” Wu says. She finished her drawing, which shows the joy, unity and harmony of fishermen, in just three days.
To help bring the forgotten historical event to light, Saxby is now asking a painter to create a second work to show the rescue scene, while another painting related to the incident by Wu has been completed and is ready for exhibition.
24. Who is Graham Saxby?
A. A film director. B. A son of a POW.
C. A British painter. D. A survivor on the ship.

A. She drew a picture in return. B. She sent a letter of thanks to him.
C. She told him her grandfather’s story. D. She showed his picture to the fishermen.
27. What’s the best title of the text?
A. Peace Takes Brave Men to Win It
B. A Precious Friendship to Continue
C. A Fresh Reminder to Avoid a Friendly Fire
D. Painting from the UK Honors Chinese Fishermen

Inspired by the effortless way humans handle objects without seeing them, a team led by engineers at the University of California San Diego has developed a new approach that enables a robotic hand to rotate (旋转) objects only through touch, without relying on vision.
Using their technique, the researchers built a robotic hand that can smoothly rotate various objects, from small toys, cans, and even fruits and vegetables, without damaging them. The robotic hand accomplished these tasks using only information based on touch. The work could aid in the development of robots that can manipulate objects in the dark.
To build their system, the researchers attached 16 touch sensors to the palm and fingers of a four-fingered robotic hand. Each sensor costs about $12 and serves a simple function: detect whether an object is touching it or not.
What makes this approach unique is that it relies on many low-cost touch sensors that use simple, binary (二进制的) signals — touch or no touch — to perform robotic in-hand rotation. These sensors are spread over a large area of the robotic hand. This contrasts with other approaches that rely on a few high-cost touch sensors added to a small area of the robotic hand, primarily at the fingertips.
The researchers then tested their system on the real· life robotic hand with objects that the system has not yet encountered. The robotic hand was able to rotate varieties of objects without stalling or losing its hold. The objects included a tomato, a pepper, a can of peanut butter and a toy rubber duck. which was the most challenging object due to its shape.
Wang and his team are now working on extending their approach to more complex manipulation tasks. They are currently developing techniques to enable robotic hands to catch, throw and juggle, for example. “If we can give robots this skill, that will open the door to the kinds of tasks they can perform.” said Wang.
28. What does the underlined word “manipulate” probably mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Control. B. Remove. C. Recognize. D. Distribute.
29. What can we know about touch sensors of the robotic hand?
A. They are quite expensive. B. They cover most of its area.
C. They perform complex tasks. D. They are mainly in its fingertips.
30. Which is the most difficult for the robotic hand to rotate?
A. A pepper. B. A tomato.
C. A can of peanut butter. D. A toy rubber duck.
31. What will the researchers probably focus on next?
A. Cooperating with other firms. B. Perfecting robotic hand skills.
C. Diversifying robotic hand shapes. D. Seeking new ways to develop robots.

Who among us has never laughed out loud when a friend stumbles (绊倒) on the pavement impacts their head while standing up, or misses a step on the stairs? But shouldn’t we actually feel empathy (共情) for the person involved? Rest assured our laughter is not brought about by lack of empathy or sadism.
Faced with this surprising and strange situation, our brain searches for information that will allow us to interpret what is happening and to react accordingly. What does the face of the person who stumbles communicate to us? What we decode (解码) will determine our reaction.
A study explored this phenomenon with participants who were asked to view 210 images representing three types of faces: faces expressing a puzzled look; faces expressing pain or anger, people whose bodies were placed in awkward positions, without the face being visible (e. g. the face hidden by skis or the head shown with the face hidden by the person’s arm).
Twenty extra landscape images were added to the set of photos in order to confuse participants about the purpose of the study. Participants were asked to press a button each time a landscape image appeared and their brain activity was recorded during the task. Participants were also asked to indicate how funny they thought each image was.
At the end of the study, participants rated the images with puzzled faces as funnier than images in which the faces expressed pain or anger, and funnier than images in which bodies were shown in ridiculous positions but no facial expression was seen. The brain data also supported facial express ice as a factor in how funny we found these unusual situations to be.
So, let’s forgive ourselves for laughing at comical situations involving other people’s clumsiness as we are reacting to their surprise and to their puzzled expressions, having interpreted that they are not actually in suffering and have not really hurt themselves.
32. Which is the determinant of laugh in the case mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. Lack of communication skills. B. Responses of the rest of the people.
C. Understanding of the funny situation. D. Being unable to understand others’ feelings.
33. Why were participants shown landscape pictures?
A. To entertain them. B. To make their tasks challenging.
C. To observe their facial expressions. D. To obtain their unaffected judgement.
34. What will probably amuse us when a man stumbles?
A His confused expression. B. His clumsiness
C. His stupid body position. D. His painful look.
35. What is the best title of the text?
A. Should we laugh when others fall down? B. What should we do when others suffer?
C. Why do we laugh when others fall down? D. How should we react when others suffer?

Working out does help you feel more tired. ____39____ Try not to text, watch TV, or play video games for at least two hours before bed because the light from the screens — even a small screen like the one on your phone — can trick your body into thinking it’s daytime.

Sunlight flooded through the window when Tomas was sitting at the kitchen table, struggling with a literary classic. Streamers of clouds drifted by high above in the sky. Not far away, the huge new tower blocks lined the road. The faint sound of cars was dimly heard.
His mother was chopping tomatoes for their dinner as usual. Suddenly she said, ”You know, the thing I miss most is cooking a really hot salsa (辣番茄酱), with fresh peppers straight from the garden.” She sighed. “That’s what I miss most about Merida.”
Tomas looked up from his book in surprise. His mother had never talked like this about their old life before. He studied her now. She looked a little sad, but then she smiled at him and swept the pile of chopped tomatoes into the cooking pot.
“But I’ve already learned a lot about this new country, Tomas,“ she said. ”For a start, I’ve learned that there’s more than one way to make a salsa!" She waved a packet of chili spice powder at him, and they both laughed.
Watching his mother busy in the kitchen preparing dinner, Tomas thought about the insight his mother had given him into her feelings, and he realized that he felt the same way about leaving.
Sure, it had been great for his father to get this good job, but it had also been hard. Tomas missed his old home-especially the sun and the beach. And his mother missed Merida, too. She had loved working in her market garden, selling the fresh vegetables that she had grown herself and then coming home to cook up huge, tasty meals for her family. Tomas’s stomach rumbled at the memories.
He thought about how different things were for them now, living in this large, gray apartment block where there was no garden and no friends dropping by to share their delicious meals.
He sighed. At least they were still able to speak regularly every night after dinner with his grandmother back in Mexico over the computer-Grandmother! Abuela!
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右:
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly Tomas had an idea.

Inspired by the effortless way humans handle objects without seeing them,a team led by engineers at the
University of California San Diego has developed a new approach that enables a robotic hand to rotate (
objects only through touch, without relying on vision.
Using their technique, the researchers built a robotic hand that can smoothly rotate various objects, from small
toys, cans, and even fruits and vegetables, without damaging them. The robotic hand accomplished these tasks
using only information based on touch. The work could aid in the development of robots that can manipulate
objects in the dark.
To build their system, the researchers attached 16 touch sensors to the palm and fingers of a four-fingered
robotic hand. Each sensor costs about $12 and serves a simple function:detect whether an object is touching it or
not.
What makes this approach unique is that it relies on many low-cost touch sensors that use simple, binary
signals-touch or no touch-to perform robotic in-hand rotation. These sensors are spread over a large
area of the robotic hand. This contrasts with other approaches that rely on a few high-cost touch sensors added to a
small area of the robotic hand, primarily at the fingertips.
The researchers then tested their system on the real.life robotic hand with objects that the system has not yet
encountered. The robotic hand was able to rotate varieties of objects without stalling or losing its hold. The objects
included a tomato,a pepper,a can of peanut butter and a toy rubber duck.which was the most challenging object
due to its shape.
Wang and his team are now working on extending their approach to more complex manipulation tasks. They
are currently developing techniques to enable robotic hands to catch, throw and juggle, for example."If we can
give robots this skill, that will open the door to the kinds of tasks they can perform."said Wang.
28.What does the underlined word"manipulate"probably mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Control.
B.Remove.
C.Recognize.
D.Distribute.
