The UN has called for more action. Worryingly, they say as many as one million animals and plant species could die out in the next 30 years. Here are five of the world’s most endangered animals.

The Amur leopards (远东豹)

They belong to one of the world’s most unusual big cats, there only around 100 of them left in the wild. They are found in China and Russia, but the loss of their homes and lack of food have cut their numbers.

Forest elephants

They live in West and Central Africa. According to the survey, their population has fallen by 86% over the past 30 years due to illegal hunting (非法狩猎) and changes to their land.

Sumatran orangutans (苏门答腊猩猩)

The Sumatran orangutan is one of the three species of orangutans. They can be found only in the north of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. They are known for their red fur, but there are only 800 of those left in the wild. This is partly down to mining in the rainforests.

Hawksbill turtles (玳瑁)

They are found in the warmer waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean. Over the past 30 years, numbers have fallen by at least 80% because they’re being accidentally caught in fishing nets, and their shells are

being traded illegally.

Mountain gorillas

As their name tells, mountain gorillas live in forests high in the mountains. They have thicker fur, and more of it, compared to other great apes. Unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo has forced them away from their natural homes. There are just 1,000 of them left.

Dorothy Jean Tillman Ⅱ of Chicago, Illinois took her first college class at age 10. In December, 2023, she became the youngest person to earn a doctorate in integrated behavioural health (综合行为健康) at Arizona State University. When she completed her study programme, she was 17.

Her friends and family, though, call Tillman by another name, “Dorothy Jeanius”. A “genius” is a very smart person.

When most students her age were still in primary school, Tillman took classes through the College of Lake County in northern Illinois. She studied psychology and completed her associate’s (副的) degree in 2016.
