Recently, the topic “Chinese people can eat such a sweet melon but can’t do without this grandma” has topped the hot search list. The grandma is 94-year-old Wu Mingzhu, called the “queen of melons”, a melon-growing expert. Among Wu Mingzhu’s classmates was Yuan Longping, who later became the “father of hybrid rice”.
Wu Mingzhu was born in 1930 into a scholarly family in Wuhan City. After her graduation in 1953, she worked in Beijing. But Wu had already set her eyes on her long-awaited goal. “What I studied was the science of fruit and vegetables. I wanted to work in the fields not in an office,” said Wu.
In 1955, Wu offered to work in Shanshan County, Turpan Basin, where working conditions were quite hard. She found that the Hami melon was in danger if not properly cultivated (种植). Wu spent years visiting over 300 production teams, picking out 44 melon varieties. She overcame a variety of difficulties to produce particularly delicious melons in a scientific way. Then the promotion area covered most of Xinjiang’s main commodity areas.
From more than 60 years, Wu Mingzhu and her team has cultivated more than 30 varieties, brought the sweetness of melons to people and promoted a complete breeding innovation system to the world.
When first hearing her nickname of “a pearl in the Turpan Basin”, Wu said, “In Xinjiang, there are thousands of science and technology workers like me. They have worked hard for decades on the frontline of agriculture. I’m just one of the ordinary ones.”

When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents (口音), most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/ Chinese/ etc." But this kind of response makes me fail to understand the true meaning of accents.
Usually, what we mean when we say someone “has an accent” is that their accent is different from the local one, or that pronunciations are different from our own. But this definition of accents is limiting and could give rise to prejudice. Funnily enough, in terms of the language study, every person speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in how we produce sounds that define our accents. Even if you don’t hear it yourself, you speak with some sort of accent. In this sense, it’s pointless to point out that someone “has an accent”. We all do!
Every person speaks a dialect (方言), too. In the field of language study, a dialect is a version of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words. For instance, “You got eat or not?” (meaning “Have you eaten?”) is an acceptable and understood question in Singapore Oral English. The fact that this expression would cause a standard American English speaker to take pause doesn’t mean that Singapore Oral English is “wrong” or “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different?
We need to move beyond a narrow conception of accents and dialects — for the benefit of everyone.
Language differences like these provide deep understandings into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is definitely a part of one’s identity. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.
8. What does the author think of his/ her friends’ response in paragraph 1?
A. It reflects their self-confidence.
B. It reflects their language levels.
C. It misses the point of communication.
D. It misses the real meaning of accents.
9. Why does the author use the example of Singapore Oral English?
A. To support the use of dialects.
B. To show the diversity of dialects.
C. To correct a grammatical mistake.
D. To highlight a traditional approach.
10. What does the author recommend us to do in the last paragraph?
A. Learn to speak with your local dialect.
B. Seek for an official definition of accents.
C. Appreciate the value of accents and dialects.
D. Distinguish our local languages from others’.
11. What can be a suitable title for this passage?
A. Everyone Has an Accent
B. Accents Weaken Our Uniqueness
C. Dialects Lead to Misunderstanding
D. Standard English Is at Risk
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇议论文。主要论述了每个人都有口音。从这个意义上说,指出某人“有口音”是毫无意义的。语言差异可以帮助人们洞察他人的文化经历和背景,因此我们要欣赏口音和方言的价值。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents, most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/ Chinese/ etc." But this kind of response makes me fail to understand the true meaning of accents.(当我跟一些朋友提到我们每个人说话都有口音时,他们中的大多数人都自豪地回答:“哦,我说的是标准的英语或汉语等等。” 但这种回应让我无法理解口音的真正含义。)”可知,作者认为他或她的朋友的回应忽略了口音的真正含义。故选D。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段第一句“Every person speaks a dialect, too. (每个人也会说一种方言。)”及本段后文“American English speaker to take pause doesn’t mean that Singapore Oral English is “wrong” or “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different?(以美式英语为母语的人会停顿,这并不意味着新加坡英语口语是 “错误的” 或 “不合语法的”。按照新加坡英语母语者自成体系的语法规则,这个句子结构规范,表意清晰。仅仅因为它与众不同,就该被视为错误吗?)”可知,作者认为不能因为它不同就认为它是错的。所以作者使用新加坡口语的例子是为了证明使用方言是可以接受的。故选A。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Language differences like these provide deep understandings into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is definitely a part of one’s identity. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.(诸如此类的语言差异能让我们深入了解人们的文化经历和背景。在全球化时代,一个人的说话方式无疑是其身份认同的一部分。大多数人会很乐意谈论自己语言背后的文化。这样一来,我们会更多地了解我们所生活的世界,还能在这个过程中交到朋友。)”可知, 作者在最后一段中建议我们欣赏口音和方言的价值。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“In this sense, it’s pointless to point out that someone “has an accent”. We all do! (从这个意义上说,指出某人“有口音”是毫无意义的。我们都有!)”以及第三段“Every person speaks a dialect, too. (每个人也会说一种方言。)”可知,作者认为每个人都有口音,而且作者在最后一段指出不同的口音可以让我们更多地了解我们生活的世界,并在这一过程中结交朋友。故A项“Everyone Has an Accent (每个人都有口音)”最能概括本文主旨。故选A。
D
A Chinese medical research team has developed a model using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to blood analysis, allowing labs to provide faster and more correct feedback to doctors.
Hospital labs generally test millions of blood cells for disease diagnosis every day, which is a repeated task usually performed by hand by trained physicians who check blood samples through microscopes, one after another.
The new AI model has been considered as a breakthrough development, as it has the potential to change how labs analyze blood samples, simplifying the evaluation process and finding potential abnormal conditions with great efficiency.
A blood smear (血涂片) is a traditional examination used to look for abnormalities in blood cells. It is an important way to discover blood system disorders. However, the current analysis of blood smear under a microscope is time-consuming and mainly relies on the skills and experience of physicians. Many Chinese clinics at the grassroots level are lacking well-trained professionals, resulting in a low rate of diagnosis.
“The AI has learned to recognize which cells are normal or abnormal with an accuracy rate of over 90 percent in a shorter time than human eyes,” said Peng Xiangui, leader of the research team.
Peng went on to explain that to train and test the AI model, his team fed it with data involving 300,000 red blood cells collected over the past five years. The results showed that it can accurately identify 49 types of abnormal blood cells, covering most of the common diseases seen in the clinic.
In addition to reducing human labor, Peng believes that such a medical AI model will assist inexperienced physicians in reaching the level of an expert and increase their work efficiency. Besides, the AI database can store unlimited information, making diagnosis more scientific and accurate.
12. Which of the following is the advantage of the new AI model?
A. Cheaper price. B. Better handling.
C. Higher efficiency. D. Clearer images.
13. What does the underlined word “relies on” mean here?
A. Depends on. B. Insists on.
C. Sums up. D. Tries out.
14. Why does the blood smear lead to a low rate of diagnosis at the grassroots level?
A. It’s hard to find abnormal cells.
B. Many clinics lack skilled physicians.
C. It’s a traditional and backward method.
D. Many clinics don’t have professional devices.
15. What can we infer from Peng’s words?
A. He thinks highly of the new AI model.
B. The new AI model has been widely used.
C. It’s necessary to keep the AI database safe.
D. Inexperienced physicians are no match for the AI model.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了中国医疗研究团队开发了一种基于人工智能的血液分析模型,能够快速、准确地识别异常血细胞,提高诊断效率,尤其有助于解决基层诊所缺乏专业医生的问题。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“The new AI model has been considered as a breakthrough development, as it has the potential to change how labs analyze blood samples, simplifying the evaluation process and finding potential abnormal conditions with great efficiency. (新的人工智能模型被认为是突破性的发展,因为它有可能改变实验室分析血液样本的方式,简化评估过程,并以极高的效率发现潜在的异常情况)”可知,新人工智能模型的主要优势在于提高效率。故选C项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线部分的上文“However, the current analysis of blood smear under a microscope is time-consuming (然而,目前在显微镜下分析血液涂片是费时的)”和下文“Many Chinese clinics at the grassroots level are lacking well-trained professionals, resulting in a low rate of diagnosis. (中国很多基层诊所缺乏训练有素的专业人员,导致诊断率很低)”可知,血液涂片分析费时,且会因为专业人员缺乏训练而诊断率低,由此可知,这种分析会依赖医生的技能和经验,画线部分意为“依赖,依靠”,与Depends on意思一致。故选A项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Many Chinese clinics at the grassroots level are lacking well-trained professionals, resulting in a low rate of diagnosis. (中国很多基层诊所缺乏训练有素的专业人员,导致诊断率很低)”可知,血液涂片分析在基层诊所的诊断率低的主要原因是缺乏熟练的医生。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中Peng所说的话“The AI has learned to recognize which cells are normal or abnormal with an accuracy rate of over 90 percent in a shorter time than human eyes (人工智能已经学会了在比人眼更短的时间内识别正常细胞和异常细胞,准确率达到90%以上)”和最后一段“In addition to reducing human labor, Peng believes that such a medical AI model will assist inexperienced physicians in reaching the level of an expert and increase their work efficiency. Besides, the AI database can store unlimited information, making diagnosis more scientific and accurate. (除了减少人力劳动,彭认为这样的医疗人工智能模型将帮助没有经验的医生达到专家的水平,提高他们的工作效率。此外,人工智能数据库可以存储无限的信息,使诊断更加科学和准确)”可知,彭提到医疗人工智能模型的多重好处,包括减少人力劳动、提升医生水平和效率、诊断准确率高。由此可知,他对新的人工智能模型评价很高。故选A项。

When John pulled into his mother’s driveway with his young daughter, Lily, the sight of the familiar lychee (荔枝) tree welcomed them. “Look, Lily,” John said, pointing to the towering tree in the front yard. “It’s the family tree. Grandma took it from China.”
Lily smiled as John treated the tree as if it were a real family member. As they were admiring the tree, the screen door opened and out stepped Grandma Mei, bathed in the warm Florida sunlight. Grandma Mei, who came from the province of Guangdong in China, was known for her gardening, particularly when it came to lychees.
Seeing her granddaughter, Grandma Mei adjusted her baseball cap and asked if Lily was ready for some lychees. But Lily hesitated, for the fruit’s appearance was unlike any other fruit she had tried before.
“It’s OK, Lily. Let’s get busy!” John said with enthusiasm, rubbing his hands together. “Family tree’s waiting.” John, eager to start the day’s work, began climbing the tree, determined to harvest the best lychees for the family. Lily watched in amazement, wondering how Grandma could grow these big lychees, and why her father could be so skillful. Lily noticed the clusters (簇) of lychees, their skin rough yet inviting.
As John cut through the branches with a cutter, Lily expressed her concern for the well-being of the tree. John explained to her that cutting the ends of branches won’t hurt family tree. Instead such behaviour made it healthier and stronger.

Grandma Mei, her eyes sparkling with nostalgia, recounted tales of her homeland in Guangdong, where the tradition of growing lychees was cherished and passed down through generations in their family. John told his childhood days, climbing and playing around the same tree. Lily, now a new fan of the fruit, listened intently, her hands peeling another lychee as she absorbed the rich history and deeper roots of her family’s legacy. The family tree, standing tall and steadfast, silently witnessed yet another beautiful day, binding the generations even more tightly.

4. Why did Wu dislike the job in Beijing?
A. She preferred to research in the fields.
B. She was attracted by Xinjiang’s fruit.
C. She wanted to go back to her hometown.
D. She thought Beijing was unsuitable for agriculture.
5. What can we know about Wu from the first two paragraphs?
A. She is skilled in hybrid rice.
B. She was born in a scholarly family.
C. She majored in science of medicine.
D. She finished her education at the age of 33.
6. How does the author describe the process of Wu’s saving Hami melons?
A. By making a comparison. B. By telling a story.
C. By citing local people’s words. D. By listing numbers.
7. Which of the following best describes Wu?
A. Kind. B. Humorous.
C. Devoted. D. Patient.
C
