This summer, come to to Spain and enjoy the charming beaches.

Erin Willman, who lost her vision at fifteen, faced numerous challenges as people often told her what she cannot do, but she wanted to show them what she can do. Turned down from job applications due to her blindness, Erin decided to create her own path. Within a year, she established White Cane Coffee, becoming its CEO and proving that her disability would not hinder her ambitions.
White Cane Coffee has grown from an idea born on a tough day into a thriving business with Erin’s coffee available in multiple cities. Beyond selling high-quality coffee, the company champions inclusiveness by creating employment opportunities for blind and disabled individuals, equipping them with valuable skills and boosting their confidence. The company’s commitment to inclusiveness is evident in its unique product labeling; each package features Braille, making it one of the pioneering companies to label all products this way. This initiative addresses Erin’s belief that visually impaired individuals should be able to shop independently.
The company provides jobs at a livable wage, offering freedoms and enriching the lives of employees who are often unfairly deprived of such opportunities elsewhere. Erin’s team emphasizes that their mission goes beyond wages — it instills hope and demonstrates the value of every employee as part of a larger effort. Profits from White Cane Coffee do more than just support the staff; they also contribute to leader dog training, community work with children, and fundraising for non-profits.
Erin’s vision extends beyond personal success; her ultimate goal is to effect global change. She prioritizes social impact over material wealth, aiming to use her position to improve lives. Erin and her team remain thankful for the fantastic support from their community and disability support providers. And more importantly, they are proud of how much they accomplish in providing resources and empowerment to disabled people. They hope to continue to create additional jobs, which will help even more people become independent. To that end, they are working on some very exciting projects to help gain the footing necessary to jump to the next level as a company.

It is common for us to hear people saying “too busy”. Sometimes maybe they are really busy, however, more times it’s just because that’s what they think they are supposed to say. That’s what important people say. That’s what people who get promoted say. But the fact is working long hours doesn’t necessarily mean better results. Never taking a vacation won’t lead to a promotion. So why are we so proud to talk about how busy we are all the time?
In 2016, researchers from Columbia, Harvard, and Georgetown conducted a study to figure it out. They found busy people are perceived to be of high status, and interestingly, these status attributions are heavily influenced by our own beliefs about social mobility. In other words, the more we believe that one has the opportunity for success based on hard work, the more we tend to think that people who skip leisure and work all the time are of higher standing.
That’s why we feel like we have to appear busy, and there’s a real perception that if someone is knee-deep in meetings, emails and stress, then they’re probably a big deal. This culture of busyness is making it hard for employees to find work-life balance. According to a recent study, one in five highly engaged employees is at risk of burnout (精疲力竭).
Personally, I’m going to stop saying “busy” when people ask me how I am. It sounds self-righteous (自以为是的) and sets the wrong tone. Phrases like “I have limited access to email” and “I’ll respond as soon as I get back” sound like you’re being held against your will from working as opposed to making the most of your time off.
That’s why we recently launched the Out of Office Email Generator, a free tool you can use before your next long weekend or trip. You can share loud and proud that you won’t be checking emails until you’re back. Managers need to think twice about emailing their teams on the weekend and talking about how busy they are. Leaders should take time off themselves and encourage employees to do the same.
8. Why do people like to say “busy”?
A. They want to get promoted. B. It makes them look important.
C. They have too much work to do. D. They enjoy the feeling of being busy.
9. Why do we tend to think that busy people are of high status?
A. Our status can be attributed to our social mobility.
B. We hold the belief that hard work leads to success.
C. Our own opportunity for success never comes easily.
D. We find few people of high status have time for leisure.
10. What does “I have limited access to email” sound like according to the author?
A. One is too busy to check all emails in time. B. One is simply enjoying their time off work.
C. One has difficulty dealing with the work issues. D. One is forced by circumstances to stop working.
11. Why did the author launch the Out of Office Email Generator?
A. To ensure employees and employers have time off.
B. To stop managers talking about how busy they are.
C. To encourage employees to answer emails promptly.
D. To enable employees to spend less time checking emails.
D
Berries of all kinds are a delicious and healthy part of any diet. Now, researchers in Finland have shown that these fruits are more than just a tasty treat. A spray made of berry extract has been found to ward off pathogenic (致病的) bacteria in wounds.
According to a press release from VTT Research in Finland, antibiotic resistant bacteria are one of the ten greatest world health challenges of our time. This type of bacteria can cause wound infections that are very difficult to treat. But now a solution may have been found. VTT Research found a way to harness the antimicrobial properties of berries to make a spray that kills pathogenic bacteria without harming the useful microbes that live on the human skin.
This could ward off those very dangerous wound antibiotic resistant infections, and make it possible to use fewer antibiotics while treating a patient. “The product could easily be used in hospitals as, say, a liquid to spray on the skin before surgery,” Panu Lahtinen, Associate Professor and Senior Advisor at VTT said in the press release.
VTT has been researching the antimicrobial properties of berries for over two decades. While the data has not yet been published the researchers found that wild berry seeds of all kinds are naturally coated with antimicrobial compounds. This helps prevent the growth of molds or other diseases before the fruit can germinate. “Our research has identified antimicrobial compounds in several wild berries,” Panu told Good News Finland.
The researchers developed a way to extract the useful compounds from berry cakes, a byproduct of juice making that contains berry seeds and skins. A nanocellulose (纳米纤维) film that is friendly to human skin is bathed in the berry compound extracted from the berry cake. This makes their spray entirely bio-based.
What is remarkable is that VTT found a way to use the power of their local natural surroundings — wild raspberries grow abundantly in Finland — to help humanity, all while also partaking in a circular economy by using organic matter that would otherwise be considered a waste product. As the threat of antibiotic resistant bacteria grows, it is good to know that the solution may be something so simple as a berry.
12. Which statement best describes the benefit of using berry spray?
A. It promotes faster surgical recovery.
B. It can reduce the number of surgeries.
C It can free patients of pain in surgeries.
D. It reduces reliance on antibiotics in treatment.
13. How is the product made?
A. Making berries into berry cakes.
B. Making berry compounds hard enough.
C. Having berry compounds on nanocellulose material.
D Preventing aimed berries from getting effected.
14. What is one most important fact about this product?
A. Benefiting local people’s health.
B. Protecting patients’ skin before surgery.
C. Promoting sustainable development.
D. Increasing the products of natural berries.
15. What can be the best title of the text?
A. Berry Spray Fights Bacteria. B. Berries: A New Tasty Treat.
C. Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria. D. Wild Berries Prove Powerful.

Hanson was a 6 Grade student in Pine Tree Primary School. He was known for his kindness and lively spirit. Hanson had a heart of gold; he loved helping others, which made him a favorite among his teachers and classmates. His academic performance was commendable, and punctuality was one of his strongest virtues. For instance, no matter the weather — be it a scorching hot day or a chilly, rainy morning — Hanson would always be the first to arrive at school, his backpack slung over one shoulder, a bright smile lighting up his face.
However, despite his many admirable qualities, Hanson harbored a secret fear: dogs. Ever since he was a little boy, the mere sight of a dog could send shivers down his spine. One particular memory stood out vividly in his mind. It was a sunny afternoon when he was playing in the park with his friends. Suddenly, a large, friendly-looking dog approached them, wagging its tail. While the other children laughed and played with the dog, Hanson froze, feeling a mix of fear and embarrassment. From that day on, he avoided any situation where he might encounter a dog, even if it meant taking a longer route home from school.
One day, Hanson woke up early as usual, ready to start another day at school. As he walked along the busy street, his eyes were fixed on the path ahead, determined not to be late. But then, something unusual caught his attention. A small puppy was wandering alone in the middle of the road, running nervously among cars. The traffic was heavy, and the danger was apparent. Without a second thought, Hanson’s fear of dogs was overshadowed by his concern for the puppy’s safety. He knew what he had to do.
Ignoring his own fear, Hanson bravely stepped into the road, calling softly to the puppy. With gentle hands, he picked up the trembling puppy and carried it to the side of the road. He looked around, hoping to spot the puppy’s owner, but there was no sign of anyone. Time ticked away, and Hanson realized he was going to be late for school. However, the puppy’s well-being was more important than being punctual. After waiting for a while with no luck, Hanson became a little anxious. He couldn’t wait there for long.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then, Hanson had an idea.

And more importantly, they are proud of how much they accomplish in providing resources and empowerment to disabled people.
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. D 11. A

【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“That’s why we recently launched the Out of Office Email Generator, a free tool you can use before your next long weekend or trip. You can share loud and proud that you won’t be checking emails until you’re back. Managers need to think twice about emailing their teams on the weekend and talking about how busy they are.
While the data has not yet been published, the researchers found that wild berry seeds of all kinds are naturally coated with antimicrobial compounds.
C. It can free patients of pain in surgeries.
D. It reduces reliance on antibiotics in treatment.
13. How is the product made?
A. Making berries into berry cakes.
B. Making berry compounds hard enough.
C. Having berry compounds on nanocellulose material.
D. Preventing aimed berries from getting effected.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. C 15. A

【答案】参考范文:
Then, Hanson had an idea. He decided to take the puppy to a nearby shop, explaining the situation to the shopkeeper and asking him to look after the puppy until its owner could be found. The rest of the school day seemed to drag on for Hanson. All he could think about was the little puppy. As soon as the final bell rang, Hanson rushed back to the shop. To his dismay, the puppy was nowhere to be seen. His heart sank, and he anxiously asked the shopkeeper about the puppy. Relief washed over him when the shopkeeper explained that he had managed to find the puppy’s owner. The owner was so grateful that they had asked the shopkeeper to convey their heartfelt thanks to Hanson.
From that day forward, Hanson’s fear of dogs totally faded. He felt a sense of joy and pride, not just because he had overcome his fear of dogs, but because he had helped a vulnerable creature in need. He is never afraid of dogs anymore. He even asked his parents to buy a dog for him. The experience taught him that sometimes, the most rewarding moments come from stepping outside of one’s comfort zone and doing what is right, regardless of personal fears. And so, Hanson continued to live his life with courage and compassion, ready to lend a helping hand whenever and wherever it was needed.
