The Next 500 Years—Engineering Life
to Reach New Worlds
¥203.00
Hardback:256 pages Published:20/04/2021
Availability:In Stock
DESCRIPTION
Certainly, life on Earth will come to an end, whether because of climate disaster, world wars,or the death of the sun in a few billion years. To avoid dying out,we will have to find a new home planet, perhaps even a new solar system,to live.
In this challenging and interesting book,Christopher Mason argues that we have a duty to do just that.We have a responsibility to act—not only for us human beings but for all other creatures on which we depend.
Mason argues that our technology that has enabled us to build rockets and land on other planets can be applied to redesigning biology so that we can live on those planets. And he makes a 500-year plan for carrying out the huge project.
As they are today, our weak human bodies could never survive (幸存) travel to another planet.Mason describes the bad effects that long-term space travel had on astronaut Scott Kelly, who returned from a year on the International Space Station with changes to his blood, bones, and genes (基因).
Mason suggests a ten-period,500-year program that would engineer our body so that humans can stand the extreme (极端的) environments of outer space—with the final goal of achieving human settlement of new solar systems. He makes a roadmap of which solar systems to visit first, and uses biotechnology and genetics to offer a unique vision of the universe to come.

The new member of the UAE's astronaut training program, the country's first female astronaut, hopes that her mechanical engineering degree will be her ticket to the moon.
Nora AlMatrooshi and her fellow trainee astronaut Mohammad AlMulla were selected from 400 highly qualified candidates to lead the nation's 9.8 million citizens into space.
The two are looking forward to the laborious 30-month program ahead of them which has already begun with them getting their divers' licences, picking up the Russian language and coached for their many media interviews and will move on to flight and weightlessness school at the Johnson Space Center in Texas and eventually cruel survival training.
“They will need mechanical engineers to build a base on the moon,”says the 28-year-old,who represented her nation at the International Mathematical Olympiad and worked as an engineer at the National Petroleum Construction Company.
AlMatrooshi says she has dreamed of the stars since the kindergarten, when her teacher set up the classroom as the lunar surface and the five-year-old future astronaut constructed a cardboard moonbase. That early longing to explore space charted her degree choice.
“I actually went after it.I chose to study a degree in mechanical engineering because of a documentary I watched when I was in high school. It was about a group of astronauts going to the International Space Station and the role of the mechanical engineer was highlighted,” she says.
Leading big construction projects in the desert has helped equip the daughter of the two academics—a PhD father and an English teacher mother—for lunar construction.
AlMatrooshi's fellow trainee astronaut, the UAE police helicopter pilot AlMulla, meanwhile says astronaut training has been “a big career change”.
“I spent 15 years qualifying as a pilot including training in Australia for my commercial pilot's licence,”says the father of two kids.“As a pilot you get used to mastering everything, but suddenly ___________________.”
“I'm a big fan of SpaceX,the rockets and even the fancy space suits. And hopefully all four of us—and all the astronauts who come after us will get to be a part of future missions—perhaps even to the moon eventually.”

Have you ever wondered what happens to all of the old objects launched into space, such as rockets and satellites? It's called space junk, and much of it is still out there now.According to NASA,the definition of space junk is “any man-made object in orbit (轨道) around Earth that no longer serves a useful function”.
One large piece of space junk,a disused rocket, hit the dark side of the moon on March 4.The rocket's origin is not clear, but scientists know that it was massive—weighing about 3 tons.It must have left a large crater (坑),estimated 10 to 20 meters wide,on the moon's surface. It won't be visible right away, but scientists are trying to locate it.“We will find the crater, eventually,” Mark Robinson, lead investigator for NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera, told USA TODAY.“Depending on its location,___ could take as long as 28 days.”
it
What's significant about this space junk crash is that it draws attention to some of the potential dangers of space junk.First, the accumulation of space junk in Earth's orbit means that satellites and the International Space Station (ISS) are at risk.In 2016,tiny space debris (残骸),smaller than a millimeter, caused a tiny chip in the ISS' window.Imagine the damage that a larger piece of debris could cause. The European Space Agency website states that objects “up to 1cm in size could disable an instrument or a critical flight system on a satellite” while objects over 10cm “could shatter a satellite or spacecraft into pieces”.If this sounds terrifying, that's because it is.Any collision with larger pieces of debris could be especially dangerous for manned spacecraft.
In addition to potential damage to spacecraft and satellites, space junk also poses a threat to the Earth itself.Crashes can send debris into the atmosphere where it can remain for many decades. Some powerful crashes can even send large debris hurtling (猛冲) toward Earth's surface where it can affect the local environment.Leftover rocket debris can contain toxic (有毒的) materials that are harmful to plant and animal life. Some people in Siberia have even reported serious health problems after rocket debris landed in their regions in 2012,a local doctor told the BBC.

The Moon is attracting much attention these days as NASA is ready for its Artemis Ⅰ launch and preparing for more to follow. The mission objectives are clear:develop a sustainable presence on its surface and pave the way to go to Mars.
And then what? What's the next great leap in humans' ________ for the secrets of the universe? When it comes to the near future scientific exploration, there are a few areas of the solar system that will be receiving some special attention.
First off, there's Venus,a planet which was a relative paradise with oceans and a pleasant atmosphere.Something went terribly wrong there a few billion years ago,and NASA has scheduled a series of missions to explore what exactly is going on there.
At the other end are the gas giants.Several of the satellites of Jupiter and Saturn are covered in thick sheets of ice,and underneath that ice sit oceans of liquid water.NASA has missions planned to investigate those mysterious worlds, hunting for any signs of possible life hidden deep within.
quest
As for us humans,Mars is certainly the grand prize in the coming decades. If we have the adequate drive and funds,we can establish a semi-permanent presence on the red planet, keeping crews working and studying in person on the Martian surface. The other planets of our solar system are not so suitable for people to settle on.Mercury is too close to the Sun for comfort and too far away from the Earth.
Over the coming decades, humans expect to see a rise of “space hotels”,set up for visiting tourists and scientific explorations.Naturally, turning the space rock into a habitat for humans is not very practical considering our current level of technological maturity, but in my best estimation,it's the next easiest thing to accomplish after the Moon and Mars,of course.

Exploring the planets with an amateur telescope
If you're a new telescope owner, the whole sky is your playground. 1 The brightest ones stand out in the night sky and are easy to spot through your telescope.
2 In general, small telescopes with low magnification (放大率) will not show as much detail as larger amateur telescopes at higher magnification.
Many experienced amateur observers let their telescopes get used to outside temperatures. 3 While the equipment is cooling down, observers gather their star charts, warm clothes, and other accessories (配件).
Most telescopes come with eyepieces. It's always best to check the guide to see which one is best for planetary viewing. In general, look for eyepieces with names like Plössl or Orthoscopic,in lengths of three to nine millimeters. 4
If this all seems confusing,it's always a good idea to take the telescope to a local astronomy club,a camera store,or a planetarium (天文馆) for advice from more experienced observers. 5
It's important to research which stars will be in the sky at any given time.Magazines such as Sky & Telescope publish charts each month on their websites showing what's visible.Astronomy software packages, hike Stellarium, have much of the same information. There are also smartphone apps that provide star charts at your fingertips.
A.This takes about 30 minutes.
B.There's a wealth of information available online,too.
C.There's no “one size fits all” solution to planet-gazing.
D.But if you're a beginner, you may want to start by looking for planets.
E.The easiest object in the sky to observe with a telescope is the Moon.
F.Which one to choose depends on the size and focal length of the telescope.
G.Magnification means how many times larger a telescope will make an object look.
Exploring the planets with an amateur telescope
If you're a new telescope owner, the whole sky is your playground. _____________________________________________________________ The brightest ones stand out in the night sky and are easy to spot through your telescope.
D.But if you're a beginner, you may want to start by looking for planets.
___________________________________________________ In general, small telescopes with low magnification (放大率) will not show as much detail as larger amateur telescopes at higher magnification.
C.There's no “one size fits all” solution to planet-gazing.
Many experienced amateur observers let their telescopes get used to outside temperatures. ___________________________ While the equipment is cooling down, observers gather their star charts, warm clothes, and other accessories (配件).
A.This takes about 30 minutes.
Most telescopes come with eyepieces. It's always best to check the guide to see which one is best for planetary viewing. In general, look for eyepieces with names like Plössl or Orthoscopic,in lengths of three to nine millimeters. _______________________________________________________________
F.Which one to choose depends on the size and focal length of the telescope.
If this all seems confusing,it's always a good idea to take the telescope to a local astronomy club,a camera store,or a planetarium (天文馆) for advice from more experienced observers. ______________________________

B.There's a wealth of information available online,too.
It's important to research which stars will be in the sky at any given time.Magazines such as Sky & Telescope publish charts each month on their websites showing what's visible.Astronomy software packages, hike Stellarium, have much of the same information. There are also smartphone apps that provide star charts at your fingertips.
