On a cold day recently under stubborn grey skies, a band of green-fingered volunteers can be found in Somerset’s Chew valley with tools in their hands and dirt under their fingernails. About 30 helpers are divided into pairs, carefully planting hawthorn, blackthorn and crab apple saplings, one tree at a time, determined not to be scared away by the scale of the project: they are creating one of the biggest new woodlands in England.
The Lower Chew Forest, as it will be known, is a vast new woodland between Bristol and Bath, made up of 100,000 native trees planted by about 1,000 volunteers mobilized by charity Avon Needs Trees. The charity says the 420-acre woodland will increase biodiversity, reduce flooding and lock up carbon to help prevent climate breakdown. But what does it take to make it happen?
John Chew, a 66-year-old teacher, is in charge of those who come to plant trees. According to him, the tree-planters, from children to those in their late 80s, mostly arrive from Bristol, Bath and the surrounding villages of the Mendips and Chew valley.
“One of the reasons why Avon Needs Trees has become so successful over the last four or five years is that so many people are concerned about climate change, biodiversity loss, things like that,” he says. “The spades do not slip easily into the thick clay soil; planting tree after tree takes some effort. But the volunteers are all thrilled to be here, each for their own unique reasons.” “I read in the media about the climate crisis, and I think for me to be able to mitigate it is to come and actively do something,” says Georgie Duckworth, 41, a writer who lives in the Chew valley. “So being here feels like a positive step.”
According to Dave Wood, chief executive of Avo n Needs Trees, the project takes “quite a lot of blood, sweat and tears” to acquire, but is now well on its way. “The people-power side of this has never been a barrier for us,” Wood says. “We have so much community support and help from people.”
4. What is the main function of the description of the scene?
A. It shows the difficulty of the tree-planting work.
B. It highlights the beautiful scenery of the Chew valley.
C. It sets the stage for introducing the tree-planting project.
D. It clarifies the tough working conditions of volunteers.
5. What is the main purpose of the Lower Chew Forest project?
A. To offer jobs to local people. B. To help deal with environmental issues.
C. To develop tourism in the Chew valley. D. To create a new habitat for endangered species.
6. What does the underlined word “mitigate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Distinguish. B. Comprehend. C. Address. D. Postpone.
7. What is Wood’s attitude towards the project’s progress?
A. Worried. B. Dismissive. C. Mixed. D. Satisfied.

Being bilingual (双语的) means learning to deal with two different ways of naming and perceiving reality. That requires the bilingual brain to learn to think in both languages and to switch between them effortlessly, a process known as code switching. Some researchers believe this process gives multilingual people an edge.
Historically, the scientific community held the belief that second language acquisition could slow down a child’s academic progress. However, contemporary understanding firmly acknowledges the cognitive (认知的) benefits bilingual children possess. Dr Fraser Lauchlan, an honorary lecturer at the University of Strathclyde, noted that faulty research from the 1930s to 1950s, since discredited, had caused the misperception that bilingualism could be harmful to a child’s academic achievements. Subsequent studies, especially the landmark research by Peal and Lambert in 1962, have clearly demonstrated that bilingualism brings no disadvantages and, in fact, offers advantages in specific language and cognitive areas: selective attention, metalinguistic awareness, creative and flexible thinking (including problem-solving), and short-term memory.
In a study headed by Lauchlan, involving primary school students from Scotland (learning Gaelic and English concurrently) and Sardinia (exposed to Italian and Sardinian), the cognitive differences between monolingual (单语的) and bilingual children were measured. Of the 121 participants, 62 were bilingual and exhibited superior task-completion capabilities. Notably, Gaelic-speaking children outperformed their Sardinian counterparts. Lauchlan put this down to the former’s formal education in Gaelic, while Sardinian was mostly an oral language lacking standardized form.
Ellen Bialystok of York University in Toronto has conducted extensive research, concluding that bilingualism promotes a child’s development. Lauchlan advises that for the best bilingualism, children should start learning a second language alongside their first, or at least as early as possible. Research indicates that bilinguals have an easier time acquiring further languages and display greater cultural receptivity (接受度).
Moreover, in the globalized era, bilingualism also offers practical advantages in career prospects. Multinational corporations often seek employees with multilingual abilities to facilitate international business operations. A bilingual marketing professional can better understand and target diverse consumer groups, bridging cultural gaps and enhancing market share. Thus, developing bilingual capabilities from an early age can open doors to a broader range of opportunities in the future.
8. What is a misconception of bilingualism’s impact?
A. Bilingualism does harm to children’s creative thinking.
B. Bilingualism is of little academic benefit to children.
C. Bilingual children tend to develop short-term memory.
D. Bilingual children are less likely to achieve success in career.
9. What can we infer from the study led by Lauchlan?
A. Bilingual children perform better in all aspects.
B. Children from Scotland are more intelligent than those from Sardinia.
C. The more languages a child learns, the better their cognitive abilities.
D. Formal education in a second language contributes to bilingual children’s better performance.
10. Why is a bilingual marketing professional mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To explain why learning marketing skills is necessary for bilinguals.
B. To prove that marketing is the most suitable career for bilinguals.
C. To display that bilinguals can get higher salaries in the marketing field.
D. To illustrate how bilingualism brings benefits in international business.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The cognitive and practical advantages of being bilingual.
B. The history of bilingual education and its future development.
C. The comparison between different bilingual learning methods.
D. The challenges children face when learning a second language.

The cartoon interviewer greets you on-screen. He looks a little young to be asking questions about a job — sort of a cartoon version of Harry Potter, with dark hair and glasses. You can choose other interviewers to speak with instead, representing different genders and races with name s like Benjamin, Leslie, and Kristin. Alex, the name given to this AI interviewer, asks about your professional experience, theoretical questions about programming, and then gives out a coding exercise.
Alex was developed by microl, a US company that describes itself as an AI recruitment (招聘) engine for engineers. The company’s founder, Ali Ansari, claims that this tool allows companies to “screen candidates in a much more efficient and accurate manner.” Microl splits its model into two formats: Companies can employ the software to interview candidates for specific roles, and rather than picking through a sample size of thousands of applicants, they can screen endless masses of candidates with the AI interviewer. Or candidates can go through the process independently to be added to a marketplace of engineers.
More than 100,000 people have gone through microl’s screenings with hopes of being added to its marketplace of engineers, and the company lists a number of tech companies, with Do Not Pay among those having used its system to screen or hire engineers from its marketplace.
Zahira Jaser, an associate professor at the University of Sussex Business School, says a lot remains unknown about the impact of AI and its interviewing — including how the tech affects candidates. “In the real world, humans are biased (有偏见的). But there are techniques we can use to overcome this human bias,” Jaser says. “In an algorithm-driven bias, this is likely to be very systematic.” For example, some AI hiring tools are trained on profiles of past successful employees, raising concerns that they will repeat past biased hiring practices.
Nowadays, the ultimate decision regarding who secures employment does not rest merely in the hands of these AI tools. However, they are gradually influencing which candidates are granted the opportunity to engage in direct interaction with human interviewers. This shift has the potential to trigger far-reaching, transformative changes in the composition and nature of the workforce as we look ahead.
12. What is the main function of Alex?
A. To train candidates for job interviews.
B. To improve employees’ work efficiency.
C. To assist companies in screening candidates.
D. To help candidates improve their programming skills.
13. What is Jaser’s concern about AI interviewing?
A. AI prefers candidates with previous experience.
B. There will be a lack of human-like interaction in the process.
C. AI tends to judge candidates based on the given information.
D. Applying AI-interviewing systems will bring along financial challenges.
14. What is the present significance of AI tools in the hiring process?
A. They have a greater say than human interviewers.
B. They play a role in the initial candidate-selection stage.
C. They remove the human bias during the interview.
D. They make a perfect match between candidates and companies.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Interviewees React Differently to AI-Interviewing Tools.
B. Microl Has Brought New Hope for Potential Engineers.
C. AI Interviewers Pose Great Threat to Human-Driven Recruitment.
D. AI Interviewers Are Transforming the Engineering Recruitment Landscape.

The classroom was alive with the students’ animated chatter and happy laughter. John was staring at the school field through the spotless windows, and in a flash, the events of a few months earlier came vividly back to him.
It all began on a seemingly ordinary day when John was engaged in his regular soccer training on the school field. Despite it being three o’clock in the afternoon, the sun was still casting its burning rays upon the players.
“The players who will be taking the field for the crucial semi-final soccer match this Friday are...and John,” the soccer coach declared, announcing the eagerly anticipated lineup (阵容). At the sound of his name, John’s face lit up, a wide smile stretching from ear to ear.
John performed admirably during the first half of the training, earning numerous words of praise. But then, as he was rushing forward to strike the ball, he suddenly tripped over his own feet and crashed to the ground with a resounding thud. His teammates came over in an instant, only to find that he had sprained his leg badly and twisted his ankle in the process, a potentially season-ending injury. After a quick examination of John’s injury, the coach said, “I am truly sorry, John. Given the extent of your injury, you won’t be able to participate in the match. We need you to focus on getting better,” his voice full of genuine regret. John tried his best to convince the coach that he was fit enough to take part, but the coach remained determined, knowing the importance of John’s long-term health.
John made his way to the doctor, who asked him to rest for over a month to allow his leg to heal properly. The days passed and John was forced to watch from the sidelines. With each passing thought of the match he was missing, a profound sense of desperation washed over him. Tim, John’s loyal best friend, who was also an integral part of the soccer team, witnessed John’s depression.

A. Worried. B. Dismissive. C. Mixed. D. Satisfied.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. C 7. D

However, contemporary understanding firmly acknowledges the cognitive (认知) benefits bilingual children possess.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. D 11. A

【答案】12. C 13. C 14. B 15. D

【答案】
Tim was determined to do something to cheer John up. He knew that John was not only missing out on the soccer match but also feeling left behind and useless. Every day after school, Tim would go to John’s house with DVDs of famous soccer matches. They would watch the games and talk about the brilliant moves and strategies of the players. Thanks to Tim, John gradually emerged from the depths of his gloom. Meanwhile, the soccer team managed to secure a hard-fought victory in the semi-finals and advanced to the highly anticipated finals. John decided he would be the biggest cheerleader for his team.
On the day of the final match, John was spotted in the front row of the audience, excited. His eyes were glued to the field, his body tense with anticipation. As the game unfolded, he screamed at top volume, urging his team on. When they scored the winning goal, the stadium erupted. Tears of joy streamed down John’s face. In that moment, he grasped that friendship and support were as crucial as playing. He vowed to always be there for his team, win or lose, because the real victory lay in unity and loyalty.
