As we walked about halfway down the hillside, she fell over a stone. I ran slowly to where she tripped (绊倒). Suddenly, I saw a lion about ten feet up on a huge rock watching me. It was making a long deep angry sound.
I stood perfectly still, holding my breath, wondering what to do. Christina was crying down below. I couldn’t shout to her to be quiet, or the lion might attack (攻击) me.
Then, remembering Dad’s words, I slowly dropped my backpack (背包) and took off my T-shirt. With the backpack on one arm and the T-shirt on the other, I spread my arms, trying to look as wide and big as I could. Carefully I moved away down the hillside toward Christina, keeping my eyes on the lion.
“Christina,” I called. “Stop crying. Get up slowly and catch my belt. We’re going down the hill. There’s a lion at the top.”
We moved quietly and slowly down the hill. Once back to the forest, with the lion out of view, I wiped away the sweat (汗水) from my face with my T-shirt before putting it on, and looked at Christina. Hatless, red eyes, a few small cuts but nothing serious.
I pulled out the map. The campground was on the other side of the hill. We had hiked for miles before we finally made our way back to our site.
Dad saw me first.
“Where have you been?” he shouted.

Whether it’s putting your elbows on the table or talking with a mouth full of food, everyone has to watch their manners at some time. Manners have developed over thousands of years and are always changing. Around 100 years ago, children weren’t allowed to speak unless parents spoke to them first. Now young people can make their voices heard in many places.
Manners also mean different things in different countries. Eating food loudly is considered quite impolite in some countries, but in others it’s a sign that people are enjoying their meal. What do you think, are manners important?
Many old people think so. They believe kind words and actions are good to everyone. When someone has good manners, it shows they care about other people’s feelings and want them to be comfortable. In other words, well-mannered people make the world a happier place. Manners also help keep everyone healthy, which is why people should cover their mouths when they cough and keep dirty feet off seats.
However, some young men don’t think so. They hold the idea that manners make people act in a way that doesn’t mean how they really feel. If someone says “thank you” or “sorry” when they don’t mean it, they’re not being polite. In Europe, manners were a way of showing how rich a person was, but does it really matter what type (类型) of knife people use to eat fish? As long as people are kind to others, they should be allowed to act how they like.
26. Why are the table manners mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce a story. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To describe the writer’s experiences. D. To explain the meaning of them.
27. How is the passage developed?
A. By making comparisons. B. In the order of time.
C. By giving advice. D. In the order of space.
28. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. We need to care about others. B. Well-mannered people make us happy.
C. Good manners are very important. D. You can be healthy with good manners.
29. What do some young people think of good manners?
A. They are less important than being kind. B. They are very necessary.
C. They make people more relaxed. D. They are easy to follow.
30. What can we know from the passage?
A Saying sorry certainly means being polite.
B. Eating fish with a knife shows you’re rich.
C. Coughing with the mouth covered is strange.
D. Eating loudly can be good manners sometimes.
【答案】26. B 27. A 28. C 29. A 30. D

The Most Meaningful Object to Me
The most meaningful object to me is a gold medal that I won last year.
I used to be very weak and I wanted to make a change when I entered middle school. Luckily, my classmate Tony agreed to help me. He invited me to run with him after school every day. Whenever I wanted to give up, he would encourage me to keep going. Besides company and encouragement, Tony also taught me how to improve my speed and avoid getting hurt. Last year, I took part in the one-kilometer race at the school sports meet and won the gold medal! How excited I was!
The gold medal really means a lot to me. It not only symbolizes honor and pride, but also proves that persistence is very valuable. More importantly, the medal represents the precious friendship between Tony and me.

A. Saying sorry certainly means being polite.
B. Eating fish with a knife shows you’re rich.
C Coughing with the mouth covered is strange.
D. Eating loudly can be good manners sometimes.
