Helen Clitheroe was 32 when she started doing the steeplechase (障碍赛跑). British Athletics encouraged her to try it because 2008 would be the first time women’s steeplechase was in the Olympics. She had never jumped over barriers before her thirties.
In 2010, she competed in both the 1,500m and steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games, which became a turning point. After a few injuries and falling out of love with the steeplechase a little bit, she talked with her coach John Nuttall about her options. They decided to attempt different challenges to focus on longer distances — the 5,000m and 10,000m.
In 2011, although they hadn’t planned to compete indoors that season, she was in excellent shape. She won the match in Glasgow, breaking Liz McColgan’s record. Then she set her personal best in the 3,000m at Birmingham.
Going into the European Athletics Indoor Championships, she was the fastest runner on paper, but she had come fourth twice before in these championships. Her coach and she discussed race strategy carefully. For the first time, she followed her coach’s advice exactly, staying near the front but not leading until the end. She had never trusted her finishing sprint (冲刺) before, but that day she did. Even though Russian runner Olesya Syreva was close behind, she won her first gold medal.
At 37, she became the oldest person to win a European indoor title. Many people had kept asking when she would retire, but this victory proved that older athletes could still succeed. She changed her training as she got older, being more careful with hard training sessions and taking more time to recover. As she says, as long as you take care of your body, you can still run fast. This win was special because it came after many years of trying and showed that age shouldn’t limit anyone’s dreams in sports.
24. What motivated British Athletics to suggest the steeplechase to Helen?
A. Her running speed.
B. Her jumping ability.
C. The popularity of the steeplechase.
D. The opportunity to participate in the Olympics.
25. What can be inferred from Helen’s conversation with her coach?
A. She wanted to retire. B. She lacked confidence.
C. She needed new challenges. D. She feared competition.
26. What made Helen successful in the final race according to paragraph 4?
A. She followed her coach’s race arrangements.
B. She changed her style.
C. She copied her opponents.
D. She trained harder than others.
27. What message does the text mainly convey?
A. Age is no barrier to success. B. Challenge is unavoidable in life.
C. Training methods vary with age. D. Success belongs to those with curiosity.
C
Playing a musical instrument or singing could help keep the brain healthy in older age, UK researchers suggest. In their report, published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, they say music should be considered as part of a lifestyle approach to maintain the brain.
More than 1,100 people aged over 40, with an average age of 68, were studied. Scientists observed their brain function data, looking at the effects of playing an instrument, singing, reading and listening to music.
The researchers compared the cognitive (认知的) data of those in the study who engaged in music in some way in their lives, with those who never had. Their results showed that people who played musical instruments benefited the most, which may be because of the “multiple cognitive demands” of the activity.
“Playing the piano or keyboard appeared to be particularly beneficial. Simply listening to music did not appear to help cognitive health. The benefit seen with singing might be partly because of the known social aspects of being in a choir or group.” the researchers say.
“Because we have such sensitive brain tests for this study, we are able to look at individual aspects of the brain function, such as short-term memory, long-term memory and problem-solving,” lead author Anne Corbett said.
“Playing an instrument has a particularly big effect, and people who continue to play into an older age saw an additional benefit,” she said. “Our brain is a muscle like anything else and it needs to be exercised, and learning to read music is a bit like learning a new language.” In the study, people who read music regularly had better numerical memory.
“The message is around how people can proactively reduce their risk of cognitive decline or dementia (痴呆), and really thinking about engaging with music as a way of doing that.” Anne said. However, she added. “It would be naive to think taking up a musical instrument would mean you won’t develop dementia.”
28. What does the research say about music?
A. It takes constant practice. B. It does old people’s brains a favor.
C. It improves long-term memory. D. It sharpens the language ability.
29. How is the research carried out?
A. By conducting a survey. B. By citing an expert.
C. By making comparison. D. By exercising the brain.
30. Which best describes playing musical instruments?
A. Emotionally disturbing. B. Mentally pleasing.
C. Physically challenging. D. Cognitively demanding.
31. Which word can replace the underlined word “naive” in the last paragraph?
A. innocent. B. complicated. C. realistic. D. wise.
D
Berries of all kinds are a delicious and healthy part of any diet. Now, researchers in Finland have shown that these fruits are more than just a tasty treat. A spray made of berry extract has been found to ward off pathogenic (致病的) bacteria in wounds.
According to a press release from VTT Research in Finland, antibiotic resistant bacteria are one of the ten greatest world health challenges of our time. This type of bacteria can cause wound infections that are very difficult to treat. But now a solution may have been found. VTT Research found a way to harness the antimicrobial properties of berries to make a spray that kills pathogenic bacteria without harming the useful microbes that live on the human skin.
This could ward off those very dangerous wound antibiotic resistant infections, and make it possible to use fewer antibiotics while treating a patient. “The product could easily be used in hospitals as, say, a liquid to spray on the skin before surgery,” Panu Lahtinen, Associate Professor and Senior Advisor at VTT said in the press release.
VTT has been researching the antimicrobial properties of berries for over two decades. While the data has not yet been published, the researchers found that wild berry seeds of all kinds are naturally coated with antimicrobial compounds. This helps prevent the growth of molds or other diseases before the fruit can germinate. “Our research has identified antimicrobial compounds in several wild berries,” Panu told Good News Finland.
The researchers developed a way to extract the useful compounds from berry cakes, a byproduct of juice making that contains berry seeds and skins. A nanocellulose (纳米纤维) film that is friendly to human skin is bathed in the berry compound extracted from the berry cake. This makes their spray entirely bio-based.
What is remarkable is that VTT found a way to use the power of their local natural surroundings — wild raspberries grow abundantly in Finland — to help humanity, all while also partaking in a circular economy by using organic matter that would otherwise be considered a waste product. As the threat of antibiotic resistant bacteria grows, it is good to know that the solution may be something so simple as a berry.
32. Which statement best describes the benefit of using berry spray?
A. It promotes faster surgical recovery.
B. It can reduce the number of surgeries.
C. It can free patients of pain in surgeries.
D. It reduces reliance on antibiotics in treatment.
33. How is the product made?
A. Making berries into berry cakes.
B. Making berry compounds hard enough.
C. Having berry compounds on nanocellulose material.
D. Preventing aimed berries from getting effected.
34. What is one most important fact about this product?
A. Benefiting local people’s health.
B. Protecting patients’ skin before surgery.
C. Promoting sustainable development.
D. Increasing the products of natural berries.
35. What can be the best title of the text?
A. Berry Spray Fights Bacteria. B. Berries: A New Tasty Treat.
C. Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria. D. Wild Berries Prove Powerful.

The sun cast a warm, golden glow over the city of Chesapeake, Virginia, as my dad and I set out on our little mission. The air was a little cold, carrying the scent of the nearby Chesapeake Bay, and the streets were lined with colorful autumn leaves. We were in my dad’s old car, a car that had seen better days but still ran like a champ. As we fastened our seat belts, he handed me a bottle of a glass cleaner and a roll of paper towel.
“I spoke with your mom this morning. She mentioned her windshield (挡风玻璃) got covered with small insects on her drive to work. Since we’ re going to drive right by her office, I figured we’d clean them off for her,” he said.
I nodded, a smile spreading across my face. My dad is someone who has always been a man of simple, thoughtful gestures. His name might not be on any grand monuments, but in our family, he was a hero of the everyday.
As we drove through the streets, I watched him out of the corner of my eye, noticing the way his hands held the steering wheel (方向盘) with the confidence of someone who had driven these roads a thousand times.
We arrived at my mom’s workplace, the Chesapeake Community Center, a busy place in the city. Dad parked his car at a nearby parking lot, where Mom parked her car always. It was about mom’s lunch break, and I could see so many people coming and going from the gate of the center. With rising anxiety, I scanned the area nervously after calling Mom to meet us at the parking lot.
Sensing our presence, my mom turned her head and spotted us in the crowd. Her face quickly broke into a smile, and she hurried over with light steps. The sight of her smile cased my worries, and I felt a warm glow spread through me.
My dad, still focused on the windshield, didn’t notice her approach until she was right beside him. “Hey, you. What are you two up to?” she asked. “Just clean the small insects,” my dad replied. “Thank you,” she said softly with a broad smile, “you two always know how to make my day.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As my dad was about to finish the clean-up, a gust of wind (一阵狂风) suddenly blew through the parking lot.

第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】 As my dad was about to finish the clean-up, a gust of wind(一阵狂风)suddenly blew through the parking lot. The leaves and dust swirled around us, making our efforts in vain. What’s worse, my dad’s cap, a worn-out baseball cap he had owned and cherished for years, flew off his head. Immediately, I chased after it, my heart pounding with these unexpected turns. As I got the cap back and returned to my dad, I realized that life, much like the wind, was full of unexpected twists and turns. But it was the little things like care and love that helped us find joy and hope in the everyday.
Several hours before sunset, my mom’s car looked like it was a brand new one. With the sky turning slightly orange and pink, I glanced at my dad, who was singing softly to himself. As my dad and I left the Chesapeake Community Center behind, the incidents of today made me reflect. The city lights were starting to flicker on, and the world seemed a little brighter. In a busy street that’s often full of cars coming and going, it was a gentle reminder that love is a cycle, a continuous loop of giving and receiving, of small acts of kindness that ripple through time.
