Marco Polo and the Silk Road
Marco Polo was a man from Italy. At the age of 17, he began to travel along the Silk Road with his father and uncle. They moved goods between Europe and Asia. They travelled by boat, horse, and camel. Their journey lasted about 20 years!
1 Read the passage and tick the correct pictures.
In 1275, Marco Polo arrived in Beijing. He met the emperor and worked for him for 17 years. The Chinese discovered coal and invented paper. Marco Polo brought some back to Italy. He also brought back a lot of silk, tea, and other goods. These things were new toItalians.

Zhang Qian was a famous Chinese explorer and diplomat(探险家和外交家) during the Western Han Dynasty. He is famous for opening up the Silk Road. Ban Chao was a famous diplomat in the Eastern Han Dynasty. Living in the Western Regions (西域) for about 31 years, he helped trade along the Silk Road. Zheng He was a Chinese explorer and diplomat during the early Ming Dynasty. He was famous for his seven voyages(航行) to the Western oceans. That greatly helped the development of maritime Silk Road(海上丝绸之路的发展).
