M: My mom has always told my sister and me to help others. One day last week, I was walking back to my home and I passed by an old lady who seemed to be in trouble. I turned back and asked if she was okay. She explained that she was sick and had to struggle to walk with her shopping bags. I offered to carry her things and walked her back home.
But she refused because she didn’t want to give me any trouble. I told her it didn’t matter and her home was on my way home. It was a white lie. As I walked with her, she talked with me and introduced herself. I in turn told her my name. She asked if I knew Ray Robert. I was shocked and said yes, that was my dad. It turned out that this lady was my dad’s neighbor, who had looked after my dad and his sisters when their mother died 30 years ago. My dad had often spoken of her.
But I had never met her as she had moved away with her family. It was a lovely moment for both of us. When I got home and told my dad about the incident, it made him cry. I was so moved. I am glad that my small act of kindness ended in a chance meeting that meant so much to the two people.

Growing up in Cyprus, Elena felt she was different from other girls — she was interested in biology. But it was a family tragedy that helped shape her determination to major in medicine. “My parents lost their first child because he had Down’s syndrome. He passed away when I was about seven years old,” she says. “And I guess that’s always been playing on my mind and I gradually formed the idea of studying medicine.”
At about 14, she set her sights on studying medicine in the UK. “Despite being a student from a foreign country, I achieved A-levels in all my subjects, considered suitable for medicine,” she says. Now as a consultant surgeon at one of the busiest major trauma(创伤)units in England, Elena has spoken of her successful career and the challenges she has encountered as a female doctor including sometimes having to remind patients suspicious of her that “I am the surgeon”.
Elena’s main job is working with the major trauma team, but is also involved in the team dealing with patients that have severe surgical issues. “When I’m a consultant, I have a position of responsibility not only towards my patients, but also towards the team that I cooperate with,” she says. Working hard, she has never experienced prejudice from other male surgeons, who show great respect for her.
Elena does not shy away from the fact that being a woman has sometimes felt like a disadvantage. “Find what you love doing day after day, because your professional career is a long time, and it takes a lot — probably like 20 or 30 years of your life. Therefore, it’s of great significance to do what you are fond of and then just go for it,” she says.
24. What inspired Elena to pursue a career in medicine?
A. Encouragement from her parents. B. Her desire for being different.
C. Her interest in biology. D. A childhood incident.
25. What was one challenge Elena faced?
A. Gaining acceptance from her patients.
B. Achieving A-levels in her English studies.
C. Obtaining good scores as a foreign student.
D. Reminding herself about her being a doctor.
26. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Respect from other surgeons. B. Elena’s main responsibilities.
C. Prejudice from Elena’s patients. D. Medical staff’s devotion to the job.
27. What is Elena’s advice on choosing a career?
A. Make a long-term professional plan. B. Know your strengths and weaknesses.
C. Follow your passion and determination. D. Understand your career responsibilities.
D 25. A 26. B 27. C
根据第一段中“But it was a family tragedy that helped shape her determination to major in medicine. ‘My parents lost their first child because he had Down’s syndrome. He passed away when I was about seven years old,’ she says. ‘And I guess that’s always been playing on my mind and I gradually formed the idea of studying medicine.’(但正是一场家庭悲剧帮助她下定决心主修医学。“我父母失去了他们的第一个孩子,因为他患有唐氏综合症。我七岁左右的时候,他就去世了,”她说。“我想这件事一直萦绕在我的脑海中,我逐渐形成了学医的想法”)”可知,是童年时期的一场家庭悲剧激发了埃琳娜追求医学事业的决心,故选D项。
25. 细节理解题。根据第二段中“Elena has spoken of her successful career and the challenges she has encountered as a female doctor including sometimes having to remind patients suspicious of her that ‘I am the surgeon’.(埃琳娜谈到了她成功的职业生涯以及她作为一名女医生所遇到的挑战,包括有时不得不提醒对她表示怀疑的病人“我是外科医生”)”可知,埃琳娜面临的一个挑战是获得病人的接受,故选A项。
根据第三段“Elena’ s main job is working with the major trauma team, but is also involved in the team dealing with patients that have severe surgical issues. “When I’m a consultant, I have a position of responsibility not only towards my patients, but also towards the team that I cooperate with,” she says. Working hard, she has never experienced prejudice from other male surgeons, who show great respect for her.(埃琳娜的主要工作是与主要创伤小组合作,但也参与了处理有严重手术问题的病人的小组。“当我是一名顾问时,我不仅要对我的病人负责,还要对我合作的团队负责,”她说。由于努力工作,她从未受到其他男外科医生的偏见,他们对她非常尊重)”可知,本段介绍了埃琳娜的主要职责,故选B项。

Once widely distributed worldwide, peregrine falcon(游隼)numbers began to decline after World War II due to substances to kill harmful insects, which weakened the birds’ eggshells(蛋壳). They were placed on the endangered species list in 1970. In Yosemite, the last known pair were seen in 1941.
The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)banned most uses of chemicals in1974. In 1978, four climbers discovered an active peregrine falcon nest on Yosemite’s El Capitan, marking its return to the area after decades. They reported their find to conservationists, who came up with an ambitious plan, enlisting climbers’ help to collect eggshell samples for testing.
The eggs were delicate, so researchers decided to hatch them in a laboratory, then return the chicks to the nest. Rock climbers helped with this, too, but much to the chagrin of the protective peregrine falcon parents: As the climbers carefully removed eggs or replaced chicks, the falcons dive-bombed them — one bird even attacked a climber and struck his backpack.
For decades, climbers and the park service have teamed up to help protect the bird. The park temporarily closes the climbing routes during egg-laying seasons. Buffer zones are created to prevent helicopters(直升机)from getting too close.
Peregrine falcons were removed from the endangered species list in 1999. As many as 40,000 individuals may now be flying freely in North America, and their numbers are on the rise. “Peregrines are at the top of the food chain.” says Frank Dean, president of Yosemite Conservancy. “So to have them bounce back is a sign of the health of the entire Yosemite ecosystem.”
Rock climbers and peregrine falcons could easily be in conflict, since rock climbing can disturb nesting falcons and is listed as a potential threat to the species. But instead, they have formed an unlikely partnership without which peregrine falcons might still be struggling to gain a foothold in Yosemite. The birds’ recovery is a rare success story of humans prioritizing the needs of other species above their own.
28. What led to the decline of peregrine falcons?
A. Climbing business. B. Chemical use.
C. Commercial hunting. D. Climate change.
29. What does the underlined word “chagrin” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Displeasure. B. Disappointment.
C. Delight. D. Relief.
30. Which can best describe the recovery work?
A. Tiring and inadequate. B. Demanding and fruitless.
C. Conventional but incredible. D. Risky but productive.
31. What message does the text deliver?
A. Human prioritizing wildlife’s need is rare.
B. People’s behaviors disturb natural balance.
C. Unique teamwork adds richness to ecosystem.
D. Extinet birds’ comeback is a natural evolution.
B 29. A 30. D 31. C
根据第一段中“Once widely distributed worldwide, peregrine falcon(游隼)numbers began to decline after World War II due to substances to kill harmful insects, which weakened the birds’ eggshells(蛋壳).(曾经广泛分布在世界各地的游隼数量在二战后开始下降,原因是杀死有害昆虫的物质削弱了鸟类的蛋壳)”以及第二段“The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)banned most uses of chemicals in1974.(1974年,美国环境保护署(EPA)禁止了大部分化学品的使用)”可知,化学用品导致了游隼数量的减少,故选B。
根据划线词后文“the protective peregrine falcon parents(保护它们的游隼父母)”以及“As the climbers carefully removed eggs or replaced chicks, the falcons dive-bombed them — one bird even attacked a climber and struck his backpack.(当攀岩者小心翼翼地取出蛋或更换雏鸟时,游隼会俯冲轰炸它们——一只鸟甚至袭击了一名登山者,砸了他的背包)”可知,攀岩者在帮助游隼时会遭到游隼父母的攻击,说明这一行为让游隼父母不满。
根据第三段“Rock climbers helped with this, too, but much to the chagrin of the protective peregrine falcon parents: As the climbers carefully removed eggs or replaced chicks, the falcons dive-bombed them — one bird even attacked a climber and struck his backpack.(攀岩者也帮忙解决了这个问题,但让保护它们的游隼父母非常懊恼的是:当攀岩者小心翼翼地取出蛋或更换雏鸟时,猎鹰会俯冲轰炸它们——一只鸟甚至袭击了一名登山者,砸了他的背包)”,倒数第二段“Peregrine falcons were removed from the endangered species list in 1999. As many as 40,000 individuals may now be flying freely in North America, and their numbers are on the rise.(游隼于1999年从濒危物种名单中删除。目前在北美自由飞行的个体可能多达4万只,而且数量还在上升)”以及最后一段“The birds’ recovery is a rare success story of humans prioritizing the needs of other species above their own.(这种鸟类的恢复是人类将其他物种的需求置于自身需求之上的罕见成功案例)”可知,恢复工作有风险但有成效,故选D。
根据最后一段“Rock climbers and peregrine falcons could easily be in conflict, since rock climbing can disturb nesting falcons and is listed as a potential threat to the species. But instead, they have formed an unlikely partnership without which peregrine falcons might still be struggling to gain a foothold in Yosemite. The birds’ recovery is a rare success story of humans prioritizing the needs of other species above their own.(攀岩者和游隼很容易产生冲突,因为攀岩会干扰筑巢的游隼,并且被列为该物种的潜在威胁。
D
Traditional methods used by literary scholars to determine authorship often rely on subjective factors such as handwriting analysis or personal knowledge about an author’s life, which can lead to inaccuracies and mistakes.
However, AI algorithms(算法)can analyze large amounts of text data to identify patterns and features unique to each author’s writing style. One example of this is the use of n-grams, which are series of words that appear together in a text. By analyzing the frequency and distribution of specific n-grams in a text, AI algorithms can identify an author’s characteristic writing style with a high degree of accuracy.
Stylometric analysis can also be used to detect illegal literary copying or misattributions(考证错误). By comparing the linguistic patterns and stylistic features of a disputed(有争议的)text to known works by various authors, AI algorithms can determine whether the disputed text is more likely to have been written by one author or another, or whether it may be a new discovery altogether.
Stylistic features obtained through AI-generated n-grams and other techniques can be used not only to determine authorship but also for critical purposes. It is possible not only to test theories about the emergence or change of particular styles over time but also to provide new insights into broader trends in the development of literature. For instance, researchers at the University of Santiago de Compostela used stylometric analysis to prove that two previously unknown 16th-century Spanish novels were actually written by Miguel de Cervantes, the famous author of Don Quixote. It’s a discovery that would have taken years using traditional literary analysis methods.
While some critics argue that AI-led stylometric analyses undermine the human role in literary analysis and interpretation, supporters point out that such analyses expand our understanding of literature by providing objective evidence for subjective opinions.
According to a 2020 report published in Nature Communications, applying AI techniques in literary analysis has led to the identification of previously unknown works by famous authors like William Shakespeare with a success rate of over 75%.
32. What is the focus of the “n-grams” method in research work?
A. The author’s life experience. B. The organization of sentences.
C. The author’s handwriting style. D. The occurence of certain words.
33. What is a precondition for using stylometric analysis?
A. The published works of various authors. B. The newly-discovered works of the authors.
C. A large collection of disputed works. D. All the works of contemporary authors.
34. How does the author make a point in paragraph 4?
A. By making a comparison. B. By referring to specific data.
C. By offering an example. D. By introducing a theory.
35. What is the last paragraph used to demonstrate?
A. The great progress in AI technology. B. The accuracy of AI algorithms.
C. The status of Shakespeare in literature. D. The wide employment of AI techniques.
D 33. A 34. C 35. B

By analyzing the frequency and distribution of specific n grams in a text, AI algorithms can identify an author’s characteristic writing style with a high degree of accuracy.(其中一个例子是使用n元语法,即文本中一起出现的一系列单词。
根据第三段中“By comparing the linguistic patterns and stylistic features of a disputed(有争议的)text to known works by various authors, AI algorithms can determine whether the disputed text is more likely to have been written by one author or another, or whether it may be a new discovery altogether.(通过将有争议文本的语言模式和风格特征与不同作者的已知作品进行比较,人工智能算法可以确定有争议的文本更有可能是由哪位作者所写,或者它是否可能是一个全新的发现)”可知,使用文体计量分析需要将有争议文本与不同作者的已知作品对比。
根据第四段中“Stylistic features obtained through AI-generated n-grams and other techniques can be used not only to determine authorship but also for critical purposes.(通过人工智能生成的n元语法和其他技术获得的风格特征不仅可以用于确定作者身份,还可以用于批判性目的)”和“For instance, researchers at the University of Santiago de Compostela used stylometric analysis to prove that two previously unknown 16th century Spanish novels were actually written by Miguel de Cervantes, the famous author of Don Quixote.(例如,圣地亚哥德孔波斯特拉大学的研究人员使用文体计量分析证明,两部此前未知的16世纪西班牙小说实际上是由《堂吉诃德》的著名作者米格尔·德·塞万提斯所写)”可知,作者通过举例来论证文体计量分析不仅能确定作者身份,还可用于批判性目的这一观点,故选C项。
根据最后一段“According to a 2020 report published in Nature Communications, applying AI techniques in literary analysis has led to the identification of previously unknown works by famous authors like William Shakespeare with a success rate of over 75%.(根据2020年发表在《自然通讯》上的一份报告,在文学分析中应用人工智能技术已经成功识别出像威廉·莎士比亚等著名作家的此前未知作品,成功率超过75%)”可知,最后一段用高成功率的数据来体现AI算法在文学分析中的准确性,故选B项。

Protecting the Ecological Environment
As we all know, the ecological environment is crucial for the survival and development of all life on Earth. It provides us with essential resources such as clean air, fresh water, and rich soil. ___36___
Industrialization has led to increased emissions(排放)of pollutants into the air and water. Factories release large amounts of waste gases and liquids, which not only damage the quality of the air we breathe but also pollute rivers and lakes. ___37___ Vast areas of trees are being cleared for agriculture, logging, and urban expansion. This destroys the habitats of countless species and contributes to soil loss.
___38___ Governments around the world have been passing stricter environmental laws and regulations. These laws are effective in controlling industrial pollution. For example, they set limits on the amount of pollutants that factories can release and require heavy fines as punishment.
Renewable energy sources are also being increasingly used. Solar and wind energy, in particular, are catching on. ___39___ Renewable energy sources can reduce our dependence on fossil(化石)fuels and lower carbon emissions.
In addition, individuals can also play a vital role in protecting the ecological environment. We can start with simple things in our daily lives, such as saving water and electricity. ___40___ We can also choose to use public transportation or bicycles instead of private cars.
Moreover, raising public awareness of environmental protection is essential. Only when everyone realizes the importance of protecting the ecological environment as well as takes action can we hope to have a sustainable future.

36. 根据上文的“As we all know, the ecological environment is crucial for the survival and development of all life on Earth. It provides us with essential resources such as clean air, fresh water, and rich soil.(众所周知,生态环境对于地球上所有生命的生存和发展至关重要。
37. 根据上文的“Factories release large amounts of waste gases and liquids, which not only damage the quality of the air we breathe but also pollute rivers and lakes.(工厂释放出大量的废气和废水,这些不仅损害了我们呼吸的空气质量,还污染了河流和湖泊)”以及下文的“Vast areas of trees are being cleared for agriculture, logging, and urban expansion.(大片的树木被砍伐,用于农业、伐木和城市扩张)”可知,上文提到工厂排放污染物的问题,而下文提到了大片树木被砍伐,所以此空应是闸述破坏生态环境的另一个主要问题,A选项“Deforestation is another major issue.(森林砍伐是另一个主要问题)”承接了上文,且引出下文讲述的森林砍伐的问题,符合语境,故选A项。
38. 分析语篇,此处应为本段的主题句,根据下文的“Governments around the world have been passing stricter environmental laws and regulations. These laws are effective in controlling industrial pollution.(世界各国政府一直在通过更加严格的环境法律和规定。这些法律在控制工业污染方面是有效的)”可知,各国政府通过更严格环境法律法规、使用可再生能源以及个人在保护环境方面的作用等内容,由此可知,本段都是在讲应对威胁所采取的措施,F选项“To address the threats, human beings are urged to take some measures.(为了应对这些威胁,人类被敦促采取一些措施)”引出采取措施这一内容,概括了本段的主题,符合语境,故选F项。
39. 根据上文的“Renewable energy sources are also being increasingly used. Solar and wind energy, in particular, are catching on.(可再生能源的使用也在不断增加。
In addition, individuals can also play a vital role in protecting the ecological environment.

On a sunny weekend, Lily, an adventurous high-school senior, and her close friends, Jack and Emma, decided to go hiking in the nearby mountains. Equipped with backpacks filled with water, snacks, and a map, they were excited to explore the great outdoors.
As they walked along the well-marked track, chatting and laughing, the weather took an unexpected turn. Dark clouds rolled in quickly, swallowing the sun. The wind started to roar, and soon, rain poured down heavily. The path became slippery, and visibility dropped significantly.
Lily, trying to keep up everyone’s spirits, suggested they find a place to take shelter. They spotted a small cave on the side of the hill and made their way towards it. Inside the cave, the air was damp and cold. As they gathered closely together, waiting for the storm to pass, they realized they had left their emergency flashlight in Jack’s backpack, which he had accidentally dropped on the trail during their rush to the cave.
After what seemed like hours, the rain finally stopped, but the sky remained cloudy. When they stepped out of the cave, they were shocked to find that the track was no longer recognizable. Mudslides had occurred, and large stones blocked their way back. To make matters worse, Jack checked his phone and found that there was no signal.
With a sense of unease coming in, they knew they had to find a way out of the mountains before nightfall. They decided to follow a small stream they saw, hoping it would lead them to a more familiar path or a nearby village. As they walked along the stream, the path became increasingly difficult, with steep slopes(陡坡)and thick underbrush.
Suddenly, Emma let out a scream. She had stepped on a loose rock and twisted her ankle badly. Lily and Jack rushed to her side, their faces filled with worry. Now, not only did they have to find their way out, but they also had to help their injured friend.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Lily and Jack exchanged anxious looks, their minds racing for solutions. Jack quickly took off his backpack and looked through it, finding a bandage to wrap Emma’s ankle as best as he could. “We can’t leave her here,” Lily said firmly, her voice echoing with determination. They made a makeshift stretcher using branches and their jackets, carefully placing Emma on it. The going was slow and difficult as they navigated the rough path. Every step was a struggle, but their bond as friends kept them going. As the afternoon wore on, tiredness began to set in.
Just when they felt tired and hungry, Lily spotted a village in the distance. Heart pounding with hope, they made their way towards it. To their joy, they found a well-used path that led down the village. With renewed energy, they quickened their pace. Finally, they reached the small village at the foot of the mountain. The villagers, kind-hearted and helpful, provided them with food, shelter, and called for medical help for Emma. Safe and sound, Lily, Jack, and Emma learned the true meaning of friendship and courage in the face of adversity.

C

Dear Iris,
I hope you’re doing well! I want to share my recent experience at our school’s “Exhibition of Science Small Invention”. I showcased my invention: a smart water bottle. This bottle will not only track your daily water intake but also connect to an app that sends reminders to help you stay hydrated. It has a built-in sensor that can detect the amount of water left and tells you when it’s time to refill it.
The exhibition was a great opportunity to present my work to others and see many creative projects from my classmates. I’m excited about the potential of my invention and hope it can help people lead a healthier life.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Best regards,
Li Hua
