Read the post from Paul on the “Answers 4U” website.
Hello everyone,
I’m studying journalism in university. In the first term, everyone has to do a course called“Creative Thinking and Writing”. At first, I thought it wouldn’t be a problem — but now I’m really anxious because I’m not a creative person at all! I’m scared that I’m going to look stupid and I won’t pass the course, or else I’ll only get through it with great difficulty.
Can anyone help me? Some tips on being creative would be good.
Thanks a lot.
Paul
Read what Sarah writes in reply to Paul.
Hi Paul,
I read your post and can completely relate to it. I’ve been in exactly the same situation — I even did a journalism course, just like you. So here are my thoughts.
You say “I’m not a creative person”. Look — everyone’s creative. If you tell yourself you’re not creative, you’ll easily start to believe it. So, the first thing to do is: stop thinking like that. People sometimes talk about“thinking outside the box”. Actually, the box is the way we’ve been brought up to see problems. A central difficulty in our ability to think outside the box is that we must always have a “right” answer, which limits creative thinking. So, try to stop seeing things as “right” or “wrong”.
Another problem is that we often find faults with our own ideas before we give them a chance to grow. While you’ re thinking, just try to brainstorm ideas in an enjoyable way — then choose the best ideas later.
And don’t worry about looking stupid. If you try an idea and other people laugh at your idea, that’s their problem, not yours. Try to look at the course as a way to have fun. Work hard, don’t hold yourself back, do everything with great interest, and you’ll be fine.
Anyway enough from me. I hope these ideas help.
Sarah

Will Gladstone remembers first learning about the blue-footed booby in his fifth grade science class. They are a symbol of the Galapagos Islands.
The blue-footed booby population in the Galapagos has fallen to a third of its size since the1960s. This fact stayed with Will, who grew up bird-watching with his dad around their hometown. Will had never been to the Galapagos, nor seen a blue-footed booby in person, but decided he wanted to help protect them.
A few days later, he came up with a plan: He could sell blue socks, the same color as the bird's feet, to raise money for protection efforts. Will set up his online site The Blue Feet Foundation in March 2016. The website was up for three months before Will and his younger brother Matthew sold their first pair of socks. “We reached out to a lot of people and they wouldn't take us seriously...because we were just kids.”
But being “just kids” comes with its own strengths. They made an Instagram account for the foundation and started direct-messaging stars. Will says one of their biggest supporters is his longtime favorite hockey player, Kevan Miller. They have sold about 10,000 pairs of socks to customers in 46 countries, raising about $90, 000 after costs. All profits go to the Galapagos Conservancy and the Charles Darwin Foundation, two research and protection organizations based in the Galapagos Islands.
Will's and Matthew's efforts are already having a beneficial effect. Their money was used for a blue-footed booby population survey in 2017 by a team of 10 researchers. The researchers report that they did see many more baby birds than in their previous study in 2012.
Three years after forming the foundation, Will got to visit the Galapagos on a week-long school trip. And Will finally got to see a blue-footed booby in person. “I was crazily looking around and when l saw one, it was really cool,” Will said.
The brothers have won several awards for their work. But they each say the biggest award they've got is perseverance.
24. What inspired Will to protect the blue-footed booby?
A. The drop of the birds' number. B. His trip to Galapagos Islands.
C. His experience of bird-watching. D. The symbolic meaning of the bird.
25. What did Will and Matthew do while people didn't take them seriously?
A. They started The Blue Feet Foundation.
B. They asked protection organizations for help.
C. They reached out to their classmates and other kids.
D. They opened an account and contacted famous people.
26. The money Will and Matthew raised was used to ______.
A. take care of more baby birds B. do scientific research on the birds
C. attract people to watch the birds D. award people who protect the birds
27 Which of the following words can best describe Will?
A. Humorous. B. Generous. C. Determined. D. Creative.

Dr. Wiseman started “the laugh lab” project in September. It is the largest study of humour. Participants (参加者) are invited to log on to the laugh lab website, give a few personal details, tell their favourite jokes and judge the jokes told by other people.
The project will last for a year, and the organisers hope to finally discover the world’s funniest joke. But there is also a serious purpose. The researchers want to know what people from different nations and cultures find funny. And they want to find out the differences between the male and female sense of humour. The idea is that if we want to understand each other, we have to find out what makes us laugh.
This is a subject that has long attracted psychologists and philosophers. Most of the time, people are not completely honest. We do things that society expects us to and say things that help us get what we want. But laughing cannot be controlled. When we laugh, we tell the truth about ourselves. By December over 10,000 jokes had been submitted (递交). This gave the scientists enough evidence to make early conclusions. It seems that men and women do have different senses of humour, for instance.
“Our findings show the major differences in the ways in which males and females use humour,” said Dr. Wiseman. “Males use humour to appear superior to others, while women are more skilled in languages and prefer wordplay.”
Researchers also found that there really is such a thing as a national sense of humour. The British enjoy what is usually called “toilet humour”. But the French like their jokes short and sharp: “You’re a high priced lawyer. Will you answer two questions for $500?” “Yes. What’s the second question?” The Germans are famous for not having a sense of humour. But the survey found that German participants were more likely to find submitted jokes funny than any other nationality. Perhaps that proves the point. Is this joke funny? I don’t know, but let’s say yes, just to be safe.
Dr. Wiseman and his workmates also submitted jokes created by computers. But none of those who took part in the survey found any of them amusing. Perhaps this is relief. Computers already seem like they can do everything. At least they should leave the funny stuff to us.
28. The purpose of “the laugh lab” project is ______.
A. to find the funniest joke in European countries
B. to get more personal details about participants
C. to know what funny people are like from different nations and cultures
D. to find out the differences between the male and female sense of humour
29. We can infer from the passage that ______.
A. most of the people all over the world are completely honest
B. scientists have collected enough evidence to make final conclusions
C. men and women have similar senses of humour
D. jokes created by computers are less amusing to people
30. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Funny or not? B. Laugh louder!
C. Men laugh better D. Watch out for the trap in jokes!

As you leave the Bandhavgarh National Park in India, there is a notice which shows a huge tiger. The notice says, “You may not have seen me, but I have seen you.” There are more than a billion people in India and Indian tigers probably see humans every single day. Tigers can and do kill almost anything they meet in the jungle. However, it is a little strange that attacks on humans are not that frequent.
Some people might argue that these attacks were in fact common in the past. But there were far more tigers around in those days. So, to some extent, attacks appear to have been as rare then as they are today.
People think it is because of fears, but what exactly are tigers afraid of? Can they really know that we may be even better armed than they are? Surely not. Has the species programmed the experiences of all tigers with humans into its genes to be inherited as instinct? Perhaps. But I think the explanation may be simpler and, in a way, more interesting.
I suspect that a tiger’s fear of humans lies in the way he actually observes us visually. Imagine a tiger sees a man who is 1.8 meters tall. A tiger is less than 1 meter tall but he may be up to 3 meters long from head to tail. So when a tiger sees the man face on, it might not be unreasonable for him to assume that the man is 6 meters long. If he met a deer of this size, he might attack the animal by leaping on its back, but when he looks behind the man, he can’t see a back. From the front the man is huge, but looked at from the side he all but disappears. This must be very disturbing. A hunter has to be confident that it can kill its prey, and no one is confident when they are disconcerted.
The opposite is true of a squatting human. A squatting human is half the size and presents twice the spread of back, and appears like a medium-sized deer. Many incidents of attacks on people involve villagers bending over to cut grass. The fact that humans stand upright may not just distinguish them from other species, but also help them to survive in an unpredictable environment.
31. As for some people’s opinion on tiger attacks, the author is ________.
A. objective B. unconcerned C. supportive D. disapproving
32. Why does the author raise three questions in Paragraph 3?
A. To present assumptions. B. To evaluate arguments.
C. To question findings. D. To confirm opinions.
33. What does the underlined word “disconcerted” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Confused. B. Annoyed. C. Depressed. D. Surprised.
34. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. It is the genes that cause the tiger’s fear of humans.
B. It is hard for a tiger to make out the shape of humans.
C. Tigers sense the danger the moment they spot humans.
D. Tigers are less confident when facing squatting humans.

阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。
If you enjoy walking for exercise, there’s a simple way to meet your demand—change your walk into a ruck. And it’s an increasingly popular form of exercise.
Rucking is walking with weight on your back. The term “rucking” comes from ruck marching, a core skill used by the military around the world. One of the tests the army normally gives to soldiers is a 12-mile ruck, which they must complete within three hours while carrying a weight of at least 35 pounds.
The reason why rucking is growing in popularity is that it’s an easy and all-body exercise. One study in 2019 showed that 10 weeks of weighted walking improved physical performance. Since rucking is usually performed outdoors, there is no doubt that it’s also good for your mental health. Lots of studies suggest that the mental health benefits of being in a natural environment are huge.
There are several tips for your rucking when you get started. First don’t be too eager. As with any new exercise, you’ll need to begin slowly. Start with an empty backpack and walk a distance you’ve already done. When you start adding weight to your pack, try something low, like 10% of your body weight. Adding weight is going to put more stress on your ankles, knees, hips and back, so do it gradually. Another option is to start with a weighted vest instead of a backpack. This spreads the weight between your front and back. And of course, don’t forget your feet. Select a comfortable pair of shoes to prevent getting hurt.
40. What is rucking?

Anyway, enough from me. I hope these ideas help.
Sarah
21. What problem does Paul have?
A. He worries about his career life.
B. He considers himself not creative.
C. He has difficulty understanding things.
D. He will fail his course however hard he works.
22. What can we learn from Sarah’s reply?
A. She doesn’t get why Paul is afraid.
B. She believes each question has the right answer.
C. She thinks people should often reflect on their ideas.
D. She thinks people should think freely without fear of judgement.
23. From the passage we know that ________.
A. Paul and Sarah are strangers B. Paul and Sarah have the same idea
C. Paul and Sarah are college classmates D. Paul and Sarah are from the same place

Three years after forming the foundation Will got to visit the Galapagos on a week-long school trip.
C His experience of bird-watching. D. The symbolic meaning of the bird.
25. What did Will and Matthew do while people didn't take them seriously?
A. They started The Blue Feet Foundation.
B. They asked protection organizations for help.
C. They reached out to their classmates and other kids.
D They opened an account and contacted famous people.
26. The money Will and Matthew raised was used to ______.
A. take care of more baby birds B. do scientific research on the birds
C. attract people to watch the birds D. award people who protect the birds
27 Which of the following words can best describe Will?
A. Humorous. B. Generous. C. Determined. D. Creative.
【答案】24. A 25. D 26. B 27. C

【答案】31. D 32. A 33. A 34. B

But I think the explanation may be simpler and, in a way, more interesting.(人们认为这是因为恐惧,但老虎到底害怕什么? 故选A。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“A hunter has to be confident that it can kill its prey, and no one is confident when they are”可知,猎人必须对自己能杀死猎物充满信心,而没有人在对猎物感到困惑时是自信的。故划线词意思是“困惑的”。故选A。

第一节 阅读表达(共4小题;第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分)
First, don’t be too eager.
______________________________________________________________
41. Why is rucking popular?
______________________________________________________________
42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
➢ When you start adding weight to your pack, you can try any weight you like.
______________________________________________________________
43. Besides what are mentioned in the text, what other benefits can rucking have on us? (In about 40 words)
______________________________________________________________
【答案】40. Walking with weight on your back.
41. It’s an easy and all-body exercise.
42. When you start adding weight to your pack, you can try any weight you like.
According to Paragraph 4, it says that when you start adding weight to your pack, you can try something low, like 10% of your body weight, not any weight you like.
43. Rucking can significantly improve heart health. Just like jogging, regular rucking makes the heart work harder and stronger. It also aids in stress relief. The fresh air and natural beauty during outdoor rucking help us relax and clear our minds.

考查细节理解。根据文章倒数第二段“When you start adding weight to your pack, try something low, like 10% of your body weight. Adding weight is going to put more stress on your ankles, knees, hips and back, so do it gradually(当你开始给背包增加重量时,尝试一些低重量,比如你体重的10%。增加重量会对你的脚踝、膝盖、臀部和背部施加更多的压力,所以要逐渐增加)”可知,开始增加重量时,不能随意选择重量,应该从低重量开始,逐渐增加,以免受伤。因此,题干中的“you can try any weight you like(你可以尝试任何你喜欢的重量)”的表述是错误的,故答案为When you start adding weight to your pack, you can try any weight you like. Explanation: This statement is false because you should start with a low weight, such as 10% of your body weight, and add weight gradually to avoid injury。
【43题详解】
考查开放性试题。根据文章第三段“The reason why rucking is growing in popularity is that it’s an easy and all-body exercise. One study in 2019 showed that 10 weeks of weighted walking improved physical performance. Since rucking is usually performed outdoors, there is no doubt that it’s also good for your mental health(负重行走越来越受欢迎的原因是它是一种简单且全身的锻炼。2019年的一项研究表明,10周的负重行走可以改善身体表现。由于负重行走通常在户外进行,毫无疑问,它对心理健康也有好处)”可知,负重行走之所以受欢迎,是因为它是一种简单且全身的锻炼,可以改善身体表现,对心理健康也有好处。根据常识,除了这些好处之外,负重行走还可以改善心血管健康,增加耐力,并为像跑步这样的高冲击运动提供一个低冲击的替代方案,故答案为Rucking can also improve cardiovascular health, increase endurance, and provide a low-impact alternative to high-impact exercises like running。
