For three decades, Camilleri, a Canadian fashion designer, had made a name for herself dressing A-listers. Her beautiful, delicate styles from leather, to evening wear, to custom other showed in the covers of the hottest magazines.
But when Turnbull — a well-known journalist and wheelchair user since a terrible accident left her quadriplegic (四肢瘫痪者)in 1983 — approached her to design stylish, comfortable clothes to fit her body through the seasons, Camilleri realized her real calling was to help bring fashion to a completely under-served community. “I had no idea that someone in a chair had any different clothing needs than you or I,” says the designer. “The world was my market because nobody had ever done this before.” In 2004 Camilleri opened a boutique (精品店) specially for people who use wheelchairs.
“Everything we do, the starting point is from a seated frame. So what happens when you’re sitting? What happens to the clothes? Where are they getting together?” Camilleri explains. “We literally had to recreate the patterns to accommodate a seated frame.”
Her custom creations have changed lives. Winkelaar has been in a wheelchair since a car accident two weeks before his fourth birthday. Until he met Camilleri, he lacked confidence in his appearance and was afraid of entering the clothing stores because he had trouble finding trousers that fit properly. Salah has spastic cerebral palsy She says clothing stores are always daunting places full of pieces out of reach. Salah says she carries herself differently now and she is more confident in her appearance. Being able to have access to fashionable functional clothing gives her a lot of dignity.
“Camilleri’s pieces are now part of an exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum, and her success in a new rare market has not gone unnoticed in the mainstream fashion world. She is a truly brilliant technician. She puts fashion and confidence within reach of the disabled,” Canadian television personality and fashion critic Jeanne Beker says.
4. What drives Camilleri to open a boutique?
A. Seeking fame. B. Making a profit.
C. Providing service. D. Meeting a challenge.
5. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “daunting” in paragraph 4?
A. Inspiring. B. Frightening. C. Striking. D. Comforting.
6. What message does Beker want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Camilleri is a highly original thinker.
B. Camilleri is a productive market advisor.
C. Camilleri is a critical technician leader.
D. Camilleri is a successful fashion innovator.
7. Which of the following can best describe Camilleri?
A. Caring and visionary. B. Ambitious and hardworking.
C. Creative and stubborn. D. Determined and conventional.

A group of giraffes moves elegantly across a wide-open Kenyan plain. Their long necks stretch high, swinging gently with each graceful step. The sun bathes the landscape in a golden colour, casting long shadows over the grass. In the distance, the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro rises grandly against the sky.
What has led to giraffes’ extraordinary shape? According to Charles Darwin, the neck of 1.8 m benefits them by allowing them to out-reach shorter-necked competitors to feed on green leaves in tall trees; it has become a classic example of evolutionary (进化) theory. But the research from East Africa showed that tall giraffes frequently feed from low-growing bushes and eat faster and more regularly at low heights. This is a surprise for Darwin’s feeding competition idea.
Giraffes invest a lot in neck growth. Males continue to grow their necks into old age (about 28), well past the time females stop (around the age of 8). At last, males have long and strong necks, which they use to show off before females as well as fight against enemies. It seems that their necks are more notably used as weapons than for feeding.
Is the neck a result of evolution? The answer should date back to their ancestors. In 2022, a group of experts led by a Chinese biologist uncovered one of the smallest known giraffe fossils. This ancient animal, standing about 1.2 m tall, showed a short but strengthened neck and a horned head. That was the earliest known shape of giraffes ever found. They lived some 16.9 million years ago!
Today’s giraffes are much larger, with necks longer and horns dramatically reduced. With the necks they can not only eat higher and lower, spot danger earlier, but fight with more power. These all contribute to their survival. Darwin is right. Watching the giraffes gracefully wander across the plain, I am once again in awe of the natural beauty shaped by the power of natural selection.
8. What is the purpose of mentioning the research from East Africa?
A. To doubt an established theory. B. To offer an additional example.
C. To advocate for common sense. D. To support a questioned belief.
9. What does the author aim to stress about giraffes’ neck growing in paragraph 3?
A. The advantage of the males. B. The importance for survival.
C. The relation with their ages. D. The difference between genders.
10. What is now the author’s attitude towards Darwin’s theory?
A. He is well convinced. B. He is disapproving.
C. He is more tolerant. D. He is still cautious.
11. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. An Exception to Darwin’s Theory.
B. Giraffes and Their Neck Competition.
C. The Problem of Giraffe Evolution.
D. Nature’s Perfect Design for Giraffes.

Humor plays a great role in helping one deal with stress, anger, fear, anxiety and other difficult emotions. Sometimes, that means purposefully shoring up defenses against hard times to come. Other times it can mean laughing when you want to cry, or cracking an illogical joke when it feels like the sky is falling and Earth is on fire.
To psychologists, humor is an unconscious coping mechanism, a kind of strategic behavior or thought. Not all of these strategies are beneficial: Drinking or overeating, for example, are more dangerous coping mechanisms, whereas humor taps creativity into stress, which can enable a viewpoint shift and block distressing emotions.
And of course, there’s the physical reaction of humor: laughter. With it comes better breathing, muscle relaxation and a higher pain tolerance. “The stress is there; you just don’t feel it as much,” says psychologist Sultanoff.
Of course, humor isn’t foolproof: Making the wrong joke in the wrong way is just as likely to increase stress and disconnection. Mean-spirited or disparaging (贬低的) humor actually causes people to be further apart and increases division.
“Humor can arise during stress without cause or effort to make it. But humor can also be played consciously,” Sultanoff says, adding that he sometimes travels with a clown nose to find fun in life’s everyday routine. “Joyful use of humor builds psychological antibodies (抗体),” he says.
But taking up the power of humor doesn’t mean ignoring the negatives. The point is not to never feel difficult emotions. “Stress is there for a reason, and it’s to call your attention to a problem that needs to be solved,” Sultanoff says. “When you experience a negative emotion like sadness or anger or frustration, it’s important to recognize why that’s there.” Turning to humor too soon may prevent someone from processing emotions in a healthy way, increasing stress rather than decreasing it. “By expressing humor you give yourself a break. And we all need a little break,” Sultanoff says.
12. How is humor helpful as a coping mechanism?
A. It prevents hard times coming. B. It means an emotional release.
C. It generates positive mindsets. D. It inspires artistic creativity.
13. Why does the author talk about laughter?
A. To correct a misunderstanding. B. To illustrate an effect of humor.
C. To distinguish humor from it. D. To warn the danger of stress.
14. Which of the following is called disparaging humor in paragraph 4?
A. Making your friend look stupid. B. Telling a story in a funny way.
C. Wearing clown clothes at a party. D. Laughing at your own mistakes.
15. What does Sultanoff think of a difficult emotion?
A. It’s something we should avoid. B. It’s a reminder of our problems.
C. It draws our attention to humor. D. It gives us a break from routine.

After a meeting one night, I felt very tired. I wanted to go home and get to sleep. I was moving toward my car when I heard mew, mew, mew, mew. Looking under my car, I found a little cat trembling and crying.
When I held her in my arms she seemed that little and sweet. I took her into my car with me. Arriving home very late, I put her in the front yard and left some milk for her, half hoping she would run away by the time morning came. However, in the morning she was still there. I tried to find someone who would take the cat, but all the cat lovers were full up. I still didn’t know what to do with the cat, so I took her to my parents’ house after work.
Not long before, my father had been diagnosed with cancer. Though he had been treated and the doctors felt they had pushed down the cancer, I liked to go there as often as I could.
That afternoon, parking my car in front of my parents’ house, I was trying to coax (哄)the cat out from under the seat when she raced out of the car and into the neighbors’ bushes. There were a lot of bushes in that neighborhood, and I realized after searching for a while that it was a lost cause to find her in a short time. I felt a bit sad but comforted myself that this area had many families with kids. Surely someone would find her and give her a good home, I told myself.
As I was leaving, I told my parents to call me if the cat came around their place and I would come to pick her up. I said to my father, “Of course, you can keep her if you want.” He replied, “Not on your life!” I supposed that Dad wasn’t that interested in having pets, particularly cats.

C 5. B 6. D 7. A

根据第二段“But when Turnbull — a well-known journalist and wheelchair user since a terrible accident left her quadriplegic (四肢瘫痪者) in 1983 — approached her to design stylish, comfortable clothes to fit her body through the seasons, Camilleri realized her real calling was to help bring fashion to a completely under-served community.(但是,当特恩布尔——一位著名的记者,自1983年一场可怕的事故导致她四肢瘫痪后一直使用轮椅——找到她,让她设计时尚、舒适的衣服,以适应她一年四季的身体变化时,卡米列里意识到她真正的使命是帮助把时尚带给一个完全没有得到充分服务的群体。)”
和下文“Salah says she carries herself differently now and she is more confident in her appearance. C
C He is more tolerant. D. He is still cautious.
11. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. An Exception to Darwin’s Theory.
B. Giraffes and Their Neck Competition.
C. The Problem of Giraffe Evolution.
D. Nature’s Perfect Design for Giraffes.
A 9. B 10. A 11. D

根据文章第二段“According to Charles Darwin, the neck of 1.8 m benefits them by allowing them to out-reach shorter-necked competitors to feed on green leaves in tall trees; it has become a classic example of evolutionary (进化) theory. But the research from East Africa showed that tall giraffes frequently feed from low-growing bushes and eat faster and more regularly at low heights. 故选A项。
根据文章第三段“Giraffes invest a lot in neck growth. Males continue to grow their necks into old age (about 28), well past the time females stop (around the age of 8). At last, males have long and strong necks, which they use to show off before females as well as fight against enemies. It seems that their necks are more notably used as weapons than for feeding.(长颈鹿在颈部生长上投入很多。
根据文章最后一段“With the necks they can not only eat higher and lower, spot danger earlier, but fight with more power. These all contribute to their survival. Darwin is right. Watching the giraffes gracefully wander across the plain, I am once again in awe of the natural beauty shaped by the power of natural selection.(有了长颈,它们不仅能吃到更高和更低处的食物,还能更早发现危险,并且更有力量战斗。这些全都有助于它们的生存。达尔文是对的。看着长颈鹿优雅地漫步在平原上,我再次对自然选择塑造的自然之美感到敬畏。)”可知,长脖子使长颈鹿能够吃更高和更低的食物,更早发现危险,并且以更大的力量战斗,这些都有助于它们的生存。作者认为达尔文是对的,并对自然选择塑造的自然之美感到敬畏。因此,作者对达尔文理论的态度是完全信服的。故选A项。
根据第一段“A group of giraffes moves elegantly across a wide-open Kenyan plain. Their long necks stretch high, swinging gently with each graceful step. The sun bathes the landscape in a golden colour, casting long shadows over the grass. In the distance, the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro rises grandly against the sky.(一群长颈鹿优雅地行进在开阔的肯尼亚平原上。它们的长脖子高高伸起,随着每一步优雅的步伐轻轻摆动。阳光给这片风景镀上一层金色,在草地上投下长长的影子。远处,戴着雪冠的乞力马扎罗山在天空下雄伟地耸立着。)”、第二段“According to Charles Darwin, the neck of 1.8 m benefits them by allowing them to out-reach shorter-necked competitors to feed on green leaves in tall trees; it has become a classic example of evolutionary (进化) theory. But the research from East Africa showed that tall giraffes frequently feed from low-growing bushes and eat faster and more regularly at low heights. This is a surprise for Darwin’s feeding competition idea.( 根据查尔斯·达尔文的观点,1.8米长的脖子让长颈鹿在觅食高树绿叶时比短脖子的竞争者更有优势;这已成为进化论的一个经典例证。但东非的研究显示,高大的长颈鹿经常从低矮灌木中觅食,而且在低处进食更快、更频繁。这对于达尔文的觅食竞争理论来说是一个意外。)”以及最后一段“With the necks they can not only eat higher and lower, spot danger earlier, but fight with more power. These all contribute to their survival. Darwin is right. Watching the giraffes gracefully wander across the plain, I am once again in awe of the natural beauty shaped by the power of natural selection.(有了长颈,它们不仅能吃到更高和更低处的食物,还能更早发现危险,并且更有力量战斗。

C 13. B 14. A 15. B

故填and。
故填by。
故填who。
固定句型“it is + adj. + to do sth.”,意为“做某事是……的”,其中it为形式主语,to do为不定式作真正的主语,所以此处使用to grasp。故填to grasp。
故填is divided。
故填historical/historic。

I hope this email finds you well. Last Saturday, our art club organized a traditional handicraft training session, aimed at preserving and promoting our cultural heritage. It was an enriching experience and I was thrilled to complete a paper-cutting piece that depicted a scene from our traditional festival. The result was a vibrant and intricate artwork that captured the essence of our festivities.

After a meeting one night, I felt very tired. I wanted to go home and get to sleep. I was moving toward my car when I heard mew, mew, mew, mew. Looking under my car, I found a little cat trembling and crying.
When I held her in my arms, she seemed that little and sweet.

Looking into my eyes, Dad seriously told me how lovely the cat was.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
That night, there was a call on my phone from Dad. Dad told me the cat showed up on their front doorstep and that he had her in the house. “She is okay, but could you come to pick her up tomorrow?” Dad said. My heart sank. I didn’t have the heart to take her to the animal shelter, and I couldn’t see a solution. The next day, when I reached Dad’s home, unexpectedly, I found he was petting the cat with cat food and a little dish aside.
Looking into my eyes, Dad seriously told me how lovely the cat was. “Maybe I can keep her till you find her a home,” Dad added, leaving me open-mouthed. As the weeks went on, Dad got weaker because his cancer had reappeared. Yet whenever I called Dad, I heard more and more about how cute the cat was and how she followed him everywhere. The little cat evidently became one of my father’s single greatest comforts in his suffering days. I didn’t realize on that unusual night that I was simply a messenger, delivering a most needed friend to my father.
