Very little is known of Emily Elizabeth Dickinson as the American poet always kept to herself and lived a life of solitude(隐居). She was born on 10th December 1830 at Amherst, Massachusetts to Edward and Emily Norcross Dickinson. She had an older brother, Austin, and younger sister named Lavinia.
From 1834 to 1847, Emily Dickinson studied at the Amherst Academy, an academic institution that was co-founded by her grandfather, Samuel Fowler Dickinson. In 1847, she studied at the Hadley Female Seminary (now known as Mount Holyoke College) but returned to Amherst only after a year, and began her own unique life. After returning from the Seminary, Emily withdrew from all social contact and refused to entertain guests. She chose to dress herself only in white and spent most of her time inside her room. Doctors at the University of California, San Francisco, in the US, have developed a piece of software that can read minds. The project, supported by Facebook, hopes to help people who, because of medical conditions, are unable to communicate with others.
Until now, technologies that have helped speech-impaired(语言障碍) people communicate have been too slow to allow a natural conversation. People find these things upsetting to use. This new way uses brain signals to change a person’s thoughts into text. When we want to speak, the brain sends signals to make the lips, jaw and tongue move in the right way to make an understandable sound. By discovering these brain signals, the new software is able to predict what a person want to say quickly enough to hold a conversation.
The brain-reading software was tested on three volunteers who could all speak like healthy people. They were being treated for epilepsy(癫痫). As part of their treatment for epilepsy, each patient had electrodes(电极) placed on to their brain. Edward Chang, who led the study, used these electrodes to record the signals in the patients’ brains while they listened to a list of questions and answered them.
Chang and his team then built a computer program that learned to match the patients’ brain signals to the words the patients heard and the words the patients spoke. For the questions, the software matched the correct words 76% of the time. For the answers, it matched the correct words 61% of the time.
Now, the mind-reading software works only for the limited set of sentences on which it was trained. Scientists hope that this early system will help them develop a more powerful one that could understand thoughts in real time to give people their voices back. Chang said, “We as scientists should try our best to help people to bring that most important and basic human ability back.”

According to a new study by Stanford University, most kids don’t know what news is false. Researchers asked more than 7,800 middle school and high school students to complete 56 tasks, like distinguishing an advertisement from a real news story on a website and determining which blog in a series was most reliable. They found that students judged the credibility of blogs based not on the source of the material, but on how much detail they contained, or whether a large photo was attached.
“Many people assume that because young people are fluent in social media, they can distinguish fake news, but our work shows the opposite to be true,” wrote the lead study author Sam Wineburg, a professor at Stanford’s Graduate School of Education.
Both Google and Facebook are now taking steps to prevent misleading news from making its way on their platforms, but they won’t be able to eliminate it completely. That is why it’s now more important than ever to teach our kids to think critically when it comes to believing various information sources.

I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock’s grade-two class.
Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess(休息) during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough, and he didn’t have a coat.
