Lynda La Plante is the writer of Prime Suspect and the best-selling author of more than 40 books. Her new novel Hidden Killers is out now. She is talking about three books that deeply affected her.
Wuthering Heights
By Emily Bronte
One night as a child, I walked quietly into the bathroom when I heard a voice calling, “Let me in; let me in!” along with a terrible knock on a window coming from my grandma’s room. Quite afraid, I cried, “Help me! Where’s the ghost?” Grandma looked up and said, “Don’t be silly; I’m listening to a story on the radio called Wuthering Heights.” I joined my grandma and realized then how you could take a story from a book and change it to a different medium(媒介).
The Water-Babies
By Charles Kingsley
This classic Victorian story caught my imagination as a child. It made me consider the unfairness of life — why is one child sleeping in comfort and another forced to climb through a chimney(烟囱)? I especially loved all the questions Tom asks on his adventures, many of which are about social unfairness. All my life I’ve asked questions too.
The Faerie Queene
By Edmund Spenser
I used to have problems reading — I was told I had “word blindness”. My mother gave me a copy of Spenser’s poem and said, “If you can learn some of this then you’ll be able to read anything.” I rose to the challenge. I learned it off by heart and was so proud of myself for keeping something that difficult in mind. Then I learned that I could learn words just as well as anyone.

A. By reading a book borrowed from her grandma.
B. By listening to her grandma’s story.
C. By reading a ghost story.
D. By listening to it on the radio.
2. Which book made Lynda form the habit of asking questions?
A. Hidden Killers. B. The Water-Babies.
C. Wuthering Heights. D. The Faerie Queene.
3. What change did Lynda show after reading The Faerie Queene?
A. She found pleasure in writing poems.
B. She began to believe in herself.
C. She fell in love with poems.
D. She became word-smart.

根据小标题Wuthering Heights下的段落中“One night as a child, I walked quietly into the bathroom when I heard a voice calling, “Let me in; let me in!” along with a terrible knock on a window coming from my grandma’s room. Quite afraid, I cried, “Help me! Where’s the ghost?” Grandma looked up and said, “Don’t be silly; I’m listening to a story on the radio called Wuthering Heights.” I joined my grandma and realized then how you could take a story from a book and change it to a different medium(媒介).(还是个孩子的一天晚上,我悄悄地走进浴室,这时我听到一个声音喊道:“让我进去;让我进去!”同时,从我奶奶的房间传来了可怕的敲门声。我非常害怕,叫道:“救救我!鬼在哪儿?”奶奶抬起头说:“别傻了;我在听收音机里的一个故事,叫《呼啸山庄》。”我和奶奶一起意识到,你可以把书中的故事转换成不同的媒介)”可知,Lynda是通过听收音机而知道呼啸山庄的故事的。故选D项。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据小标题The Water-Babies下的段落中“I especially loved all the questions Tom asks on his adventures, many of which are about social unfairness. All my life I’ve asked questions too.(我特别喜欢汤姆在他的冒险中提出的所有问题,其中许多是关于社会不公平的。我这辈子也问过很多问题)”可知,The Water-Babies使Lynda养成了问问题的习惯。故选B项。
【3题详解】
推理判断题。根据小标题The Faerie Queene下的段落中“I learned it off by heart and was so proud of myself for keeping something that difficult in mind. Then I learned that I could learn words just as well as anyone.(我把它背下来了,我为自己能把这么难的东西记在心里而感到骄傲。然后我知道我可以学单词和任何人一样好)”可推知,Lynda读了The Faerie Queene后,她开始相信自己。故选B项。
B
I still remember that busy autumn evening as I hurried with my eldest daughter, Athena, to get to her classroom on time for the parent-teacher night. We walked in and all eyes were on me. A few adults quickly quieted their kids’ whispers. A classmate yelled to my daughter, “What’s wrong with your mom’s face?” Shocked, I started to explain my condition, but my six-year-old daughter looked at him and said, “It’s my mom’s birthmark! Don’t be rude!” I was extremely proud of how she handled that situation.
I was quite young when I realized I looked different because of my large facial birthmark. I always thought I would be alone because of it. Being compared to Batman’s evil Two-Face made me believe I could never find love. But I was lucky enough to meet my husband, who saw me for who I am inside. When I had my first daughter, I was overjoyed, but I began to worry if the world would judge my children. I always worried I might pass my condition onto my children; I didn’t want them to grow up feeling judged. Unfortunately, my facial difference has influenced my children. My daughters get disinvited from birthday parties or sleepovers, or I learn certain kids are no longer friends with mine after their parents saw me at school.
When my kids were young, I explained how my special purple skin was rare and we talked about acceptance and never judging others on how they look. When my girls kiss my purple-skinned cheek, I feel “normal” around them and their unconditional love. With time going by, both my daughters have become my strongest supporters. Thanks to them, I’ve begun to feel more self-confident as I try to be a good role model.
Their worldviews are similar to mine. We see the world a little differently and with a kinder, more accepting heart. As the saying goes, your daughters will grow up to be your best friends. I know that will be the case for me!
4. What happened when the author went to attend the parent-teacher night?
A. Athena defended her mother against her classmate’s rudeness.
B. Athena was praised by others for her bravery and optimism.
C. Some parents criticized their kids because of their misbehaviour.
D. The author felt shocked at her daughter’s response to her classmate.
5. According to paragraph 2, which of the following views might the author agree with?
A. Friendship needs to be watered by love.
B. We should accept other people’s differences.
C. We should treat our children as best friends.
D. Our ability to handle difficulties can be developed.
6. How are the daughters influenced by the author’s birthmark?
A. They have to drop out of school.
B. They have difficulty keeping friendships.
C. They have the same physical condition as me.
D. They feel worried because they are often judged.
7. What may be the best title for the passage?
A. A Birthmark to Live with
B. A Kind and Accepting Heart
C. My Strongest Supporters
D. The Importance of not Judging
A 5. B 6. B 7. C

根据第一段中“A classmate yelled to my daughter, “What’s wrong with your mom’s face?” Shocked, I started to explain my condition, but my six-year-old daughter looked at him and said, “It’s my mom’s birthmark! Don’t be rude!” I was extremely proud of how she handled that situation.( 一个同学对我女儿喊道:“你妈妈的脸怎么了?”我很震惊,开始向他解释我的情况,但我六岁的女儿看着他说:“这是我妈妈的胎记!别那么粗鲁!”我为她处理这种情况的方式感到非常自豪)”可知,因为作者脸上胎记,被其女儿的同学嘲讽,但是作者的女儿为其辩护,反对她同学的粗鲁。故选择A项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“I was quite young when I realized I looked different because of my large facial birthmark. I always thought I would be alone because of it. Being compared to Batman’s evil Two-Face made me believe I could never find love. But I was lucky enough to meet my husband, who saw me for who I am inside.(在我很小的时候,我就意识到因为脸上的大胎记,我看起来和别人不一样。
根据第三段中“Unfortunately, my facial difference has impacted my children. My daughters get disinvited from birthday parties or sleepovers, or I learn certain kids are no longer friends with mine after their parents saw me at school.(不幸的是,我的面部差异影响了我的孩子。我的女儿们被取消了参加生日派对或过夜聚会的邀请,或者我知道某些孩子在他们的父母在学校看到我后就不再和我的孩子做朋友了)”可知,作者的女儿受到作者的胎记的影响是:在与其他孩子维持友谊方面遇到了困难。故选择B项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。文章第一段作者提到自己的女儿帮助自己回击那些嘲笑自己脸上胎记的坏声音,且根据最后一段“Their worldviews are similar to mine. We see the world a little differently and with a kinder, more accepting heart. As the saying goes, your daughters will grow up to be your best friends. I know that will be the case for me!(他们的世界观和我的相似。

Do you ever wonder about what the term “locally-grown food” means? Do you wonder where your food comes from? Locally-grown food and sustainability are on the rise, and it’s important to know why this trend in farming matters.
Hawaii, in particular, is a pretty isolated place. About 85 percent of food is imported. Much of what gets to their table depends on what comes to use by ship. Sometimes, one notices there is no milk or other product left at the grocery story because there is a problem with a barge (驳船).
Steven Chiang, a professor from University of Hawaii, pointed out that in Hawaii, the cost of labor is high for people who might want to farm the land. Since many different groups or individuals own small pieces of land, getting access to farmland is also difficult.
However, Chiang added, “there are many benefits to growing food locally on the islands and elsewhere.” For one, they can hold onto traditions and the types of food they like. Food in soil will have the chance to mature more, and maybe absorb more nutrition. Areas of land that might be used for other things, like new apartment or office buildings, can be preserved. Also, plants can extract the carbon dioxide in the air, benefiting the environment.
Chiang said that there was more to locally-grown food than just those benefits. “Having local food helps make people aware of where their food comes from,” he said. When people are disconnected from the food system and don’t know where their food comes from, there’s a tendency to make potentially negative choices. “Because we’re so efficient at shipping and importing,” he added, “We don’t realize or know what it takes, and that can lead to poor decisions that can harm us all.”
So what can you do? In Hawaii, there are many opportunities to volunteer at local farms. But in other areas around the world, you can do your part by supporting and buying locally-grown food. You can also help spread awareness by educating your friends and family. You can even grow your own food—in a container in your kitchen or in your backyard!
8. What can be inferred about Hawaii’s food supply?
A. Hawaii relies heavily on imported food.
B. Hawaii’s cost of living is low for farmers.
C. Hawaii’s grocery stores are often short of milk.
D. Hawaii’s farmland is enough for all local needs.
9 Which is a benefit of growing food locally?
A Lowering the cost of local labor.
B. Increasing the variety of imported food.
C. Preserving land for non-agricultural use.
D. Offering quick access to imported food.
10. What is Chiang’s attitude towards locally-grown food?
A. Negative. B. Doubtful.
C. Undecided. D. Favorable.
11. What is the author’s purpose of writing the last paragraph?
A. To encourage gardening at home.
B. To advocate sustainable practices.
C. To promote local farming in Hawaii.
D. To discourage buying imported food.

“The news is ... there is no news.” With those words, outside St Mary’s Hospital in London awaiting the birth of Prince George in July 2013, my reporting for the BBC went viral on the Internet. Not for what I was saying but the way I was saying it. The helpless look. The depressed tone. Viewers could relate to me. Because they are human. And so am I.
Fedha is not human. Yes the fair-haired woman looks human. This week she was introduced as the first presenter in Kuwait who works by artificial intelligence. “What kind of news do you prefer? Let's hear your opinions,” she says in Arabic. AI newsreaders actually never make a cock-up of their jobs. They can skip the mispronunciations, the complaints over foundation colours in makeup, and even the stresses over too-weak hairspray.
To examine the problems that may come with an AI newsreader, I thought I would turn the tables and ask Genie — the chatbot powered by ChatGPT. “They may struggle with delivering the news in a way that is appealing to viewers,” Genie says. I get that. As far as delivering the news is concerned, the face and voice behind it matters.
My ChatGPT friend also tells me that there are concerns about the potential for AI newsreaders to be used to spread false information, as they may not be able to determine the correctness of a story’s source. Not just in the delivery of news, but in its content. AI is already involved in the spread of “untrue news” — and that will only get worse. At a time when trust in news providers is reducing, the next few years threaten to be very challenging if that trust is to be regained.
One of the main concerns about AI newsreaders is that they lack the human touch and emotion. I have delivered some of the biggest stories. Whether it be an air attack or the death of a major figure, it's not just the words that matter. You need to look and sound right. An AI newsreader cannot convey (传达) a reaction to a breaking story.
12. How did viewers react according to paragraph 1?
A. They found the reporting confusing. B. They felt excited about the reporting.
C. They considered the author unprofessional. D. They knew the author’s thoughts and feelings.
13. What does the underlined part “make a cock-up of” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Talk about. B. Make a fool of.
C. Keep an eye on. D. Mess up.
14. What does Genie think of AI newsreaders?
A. They may deliver misleading news. B. They can locate the source of a news story.
C. They interact with viewers in an improper way. D. They wear the same facial expressions as humans.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To voice his doubt about AI newsreaders. B. To share his experience of being a reporter.
C. To introduce an AI newsreader called Fedha. D. To show ChatGPT's impact on news reporting.

A
Lynda La Plante is the writer of Prime Suspect and the best-selling author of more than 40 books.
1. How did Lynda first know about the story of Wuthering Heights?
But I was lucky enough to meet my husband who saw me for who I am inside.
A Friendship needs to be watered by love.
C
9. Which is a benefit of growing food locally?
A. Lowering the cost of local labor.
A To encourage gardening at home.
B. To advocate sustainable practices.
C. To promote local farming in Hawaii.
D. To discourage buying imported food.
D
C Keep an eye on. D. Mess up.
