The Lion King musical, a beast of a show captivating US audiences since 1997, has been staged all around the world. Central to its success was Julie Taymor, the theatre, film and opera director and designer whose unique vision helped the musical spring into life on stage — proving that theatrical versions of Disney movies could not only be hugely profitable, but could do so while being artistically innovative in their own right.
But when Disney initially approached her, Taymor hadn’t actually seen The Lion King. “I thought, well, why not, let’s go look at the movie,” she recalls. “And I was really taken.” The challenge of adapting an epic, wide-screen story excited her: how, she recalls wondering, would you put hundreds of African grassland animals on stage?
The answer was by embracing a distinctly theatrical approach: masks and puppetry (木偶). “I went through every animal: okay, we’ve got a giraffe. I’ll put the puppet neck on top of the head of the dancer, but you’re going to see the dancer’s face…” remembers Taymor. Her designs allowed the audience to see the mechanics of how each character is made. “You can see Simba’s emotion on the actor’s face, while a mask on top of his head reminds you that this is, in fact, a lion. There is no attempt to hide the human being behind the masks or inside the puppet,” she says, a technique she called the “double event”.
“I wanted to do what theatre does best,” recalls Taymor. “Film hides the strings: we know it’s fake, but we’re pretending that it’s really there. Whereas in the theatre, we will enjoy seeing a little puppet of a boat, and a big ocean of silk… The audience is not played down to—they’re brought into the game.”
The how was a hit—and a new kind of musical was born.
4. What was key to the success of The Lion King musical?
A. Disney’s promotion plan. B. Taymor’s creative genius.
C. Disney’s movie technique. D. Taymor’s public reputation.
5. What challenge did Taymor face in adapting The Lion King?
A. How to decorate the stage. B. How to train various animals.
C. How to present the characters. D. How to mirror the original movie.
6. What can we learn about the “double event”?
A. It provided performers with confidence. B. It reduced the danger of animal presence.
C. It helped to distinguish humans from animals. D. It combined animal imagery with actor emotions.
7 What does Taymor appreciate most about theatre?
A. Its high-tech stage design. B. Its ever-changing story line.
C. Its open and engaging nature. D. Its loyal and appreciative audience.

One day my 11-year-old daughter told me that she wanted to return a pair of pants on Amazon. “You need to keep clicking the ‘something else’ button if you want to talk to a real person,” I told her. She followed my word, and after a bit of clicking, she managed to talk to a real person and get the pants returned. In the process, I had the chance to think about what this everyday interaction was teaching my daughter.
I thought about what it meant to constantly ask for “something else”. It’s not only about having a real person to talk with. It’s equally about the quality of our communication. It’s about thinking something, then saying it, and then having another person think and say something back to you. It seems simple and yet it may become the exception, not the rule. In many cases, it already has.
With the “quick responses” at the bottom of Gmail, potential responses often appear right in front of us. “Yes, sure.” “Of course!” or “I got it.” The responses, I’ve noticed, are mostly okay. Sometimes, they’re exactly what I want to say. Occasionally, they’re wildly wrong. At first, I told myself I wouldn’t use those pre-made responses. Soon enough, though, I got in a rush and found they were good.
What would happen if our language got automated in general in this way? What if, instead of generating responses, we simply pointed and clicked? Choosing a response is a kind of thinking, but it’s far less accurate than the kind needed to generate content. It has to do more with recognizing a “good enough” response. Instead of starting with a blank board, we critique (评判) things. That’s not useless, but it doesn’t replace thinking in a generative way. If kids only critique something, they won’t have original thoughts. They may become great editors, but they’ll likely struggle to create ideas in fresh ways.
There’s no simple solution and certainly no way to turn back the clock on automated talk. Yet, as we move forward, we need to consider carefully how simple changes in communication can have serious effects. If we want to help our kids, the “something else” we searched for — authentic human conversation — should not be the exception, but the rule.
8. What contributes to high-quality communication according to paragraph 2?
A. The clear goals. B. The exact expressions.
C. The process of thinking. D. The immediate response.
9. How does the author feel about using the pre-made responses?
A. Excited and eager to try them out.
B. Annoyed and not interested in them.
C Disappointed by their inaccurate suggestions.
D. Unwilling but finally aware of their convenience.
10. What would happen to kids with the automation of language?
A. Their creativity will suffer. B. Their critical thinking ability will increase.
C. Their editing skills will hardly improve. D. Their expressions will be more accurate and efficient.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. My Reflections on Automated Talk B. My Unforgettable Online Return Experience
C. The Art of Guiding Children’s Creativity D. The Benefits of Using Automation in Communication
D
Are you a logical thinker, or would you say that you’re more free-spirited and artistic? If you’re the former, somebody’s probably told you at some point that you’re a left-brained person, and if you’re the latter, right-brained. The idea that the right half of the brain is the creative half and the left half is the analytical half and that our individual characteristics are determined by which half is dominant is widespread in popular psychology. However, this idea is a fiction.
Although we all obviously have different personalities and talents, there’s no reason to believe these differences can be explained by the dominance of one half of the brain over the other half. Recent research using brain imaging technology hasn’t found any evidence of hemispheric (脑半球的) dominance. Math, for example, requires logical thought and, thus, is generally said to be connected with the left brain. But mathematics involves a highly creative effort in addition to being a logical one. So would a gifted mathematician be a right-brained or a left-brained person?
If there’s no evidence for the fiction of right-brained and left-brained people, why do so many people accept it? Perhaps it just makes intuitive (直觉的) sense that people’s brains would be dominant on one side or the other just as their hands, feet, or eyes are. It may also have something to do with our seemingly unlimited appetite that allows us to sort ourselves (and our friends) into “types” based on our emotional and intellectual characteristics.
When people are offered general descriptive statements that are presented as individualized descriptions of their own personalities, they tend to accept them as meaningful and true, especially if the statements are positive. The “insights” they generate are both universal and congenial. After all, who would reject a description of themselves as “artistic and creative” or “reasonable and analytical”? The fiction is popular, in the end, because it gives us a “scientific” way to talk about our favorite subject — ourselves.
12. What can we learn from the passage?
A. A free-spirited artist is a right-handed person.
B. The left half of the brain deals with analytical work.
C. Different personalities are determined by the brain.
D. The idea of which half of the brain is dominant is a fiction.
13. Which is a possible reason for people believing left-brained or right-brained dominance?
A. Roles of different brain regions.
B. Distinctions between different people.
C. The tendency to classify people.
D. The conclusion from daily phenomena.
14. What does the underlined word “congenial” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Reasonable. B. Accurate.
C. Random. D. Pleasing.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Science of Different Personalities
B. The Truth Behind Hemispheric Dominance
C. Links Between the Brain and Characters
D. Ways to Tell Right-brained and Left-brained People

On a sunny Friday morning, Mr. Stone, the Grade 4 head teacher, walked into the classroom with a new student following him. She was a lively girl from Mexico, and her red mushroom hair cut immediately drew everyone’s eyes. With a welcoming smile, Mr. Stone gestured for her to sit beside Mike, a student known for teasing others.
During break time, Mike couldn’t help but laugh when he caught sight of his new deskmate. Sara’s distinctive hairstyle seemed like an open invitation for him to make fun of her. Leaning in towards Sara, he playfully suggested, “Hey, Sara. Ever thought about changing your name to Dora? You look just like Dora the Explorer!” His words caused laughter and cheers from the others in the classroom.
Sara’s eyes filled with tears, her cheeks turning red with embarrassment. Feeling hurt and upset, she stood up suddenly, rushing to the teacher’s office to seek support from Mr. Stone. After hearing her story, Mr. Stone offered her gentle comfort, saying, “Sara, your hairstyle is truly pretty. Remember, everyone has their own sense of beauty.”
Mr. Stone then directed his attention to Mike, expressing his disappointment and urging Mike to apologize to Sara. “Mike,” he continued, “your actions were unkind. We must treat everyone with empathy(同情). Laughing at Sara’s hair has deeply hurt her.”
This conflict was temporarily settled, but Mr. Stone found himself lost in thought. Reflecting on his own childhood, Mr. Stone recalled how he had been teased for being overweight. The pain caused by hurtful words was like wrinkles on a crumpled(压皱的)ball of paper. Even if you smoothed them out, the wrinkles stayed.
He wanted to teach an important lesson to Mike, the troublemaker. Then, a unique strategy came to mind. He contacted Mike’s mother, explaining the situation and discussing a plan with her to develop empathy in her son. They agreed that over the weekend, Mike’s mother would arrange for Mike to have his hair cut extremely short.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

7. What does Taymor appreciate most about theatre?
A. Its high-tech stage design. B. Its ever-changing story line.
C. Its open and engaging nature. D. Its loyal and appreciative audience.
B 5. C 6. D 7. C

One day, my 11-year-old daughter told me that she wanted to return a pair of pants on Amazon.
C. Disappointed by their inaccurate suggestions.
C 9. D 10. A 11. A

It’s about thinking something, then saying it, and then having another person think and say something back to you.(我思考了不断要求“别的东西”意味着什么。
根据第三段“At first, I told myself I wouldn’t use those pre-made responses. Soon enough, though, I got in a rush and found they were good.(一开始,我告诉自己不要用那些预先准备好的回答。但很快,我急切发现它们很不错)”可知,作者不愿意使用预先准备好的回答,但最终意识到它们的方便。故选D。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“What would happen if our language got automated in general in this way? What if, instead of generating responses, we simply pointed and clicked? Choosing a response is a kind of thinking, but it’s far less accurate than the kind needed to generate content. It has to do more with recognizing a “good enough” response. If kids only critique something, they won’t have original thoughts. They may become great editors, but they’ll likely struggle to create ideas in fresh ways.(如果我们的语言在整体上被自动化了会发生什么?如果我们不是生成回应,而是指向和点击会怎样?选择回应是一种思考方式,但它的准确性远不如生成内容所需的思考方式。它更多地与识别“足够好”的回应有关。而不是从空白的画布开始,我们是在评价事物。这并非毫无用处,但它无法替代以创造性方式进行思考。如果孩子们只进行评价,他们就不会有原创的想法。他们可能会成为出色的编辑,但很可能无法以全新的方式创造想法)”可知,语言自动化的孩子创造力会受到影响。故选A。
There’s no simple solution and certainly no way to turn back the clock on automated talk.
D. Ways to Tell Right-brained and Left-brained People
D 13. C 14. D 15. B
根据第二段中的“Although we all obviously have different personalities and talents, there’s no reason to believe these differences can be explained by the dominance of one half of the brain over the other half. Recent research using brain imaging technology hasn’t found any evidence of hemispheric (脑半球的) dominance.(尽管我们显然都具有不同的个性和才能,但没有理由相信这些差异可以由大脑的一侧对另一侧的主导来解释。最近使用脑成像技术进行的研究并未发现任何关于脑半球主导性的证据)”可知,哪个半脑占主导地位的观点是虚构的,没有根据的。故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“It may also have something to do with our seemingly unlimited appetite that allows us to sort ourselves (and our friends) into “types” based on our emotional and intellectual characteristics.(这也可能与我们看似无尽的欲望有关,这种欲望使我们能够根据情感和智力特征将自己(和我们的朋友)分类为不同的“类型”)可知,人们相信这一错误的观念可能是因为我们倾向于将自己和他人分类。故选C。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词前“When people are offered general descriptive statements that are presented as individualized descriptions of their own personalities, they tend to accept them as meaningful and true, especially if the statements are positive.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

At that moment, Mr. Stone walked into the classroom with a ball of paper.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On Monday morning, Mike unwillingly approached the classroom. Feeling nervous and embarrassed, his heart was heavy with worry that his classmates would tease him. His hair had been cut so short that the skin under the hair was nearly visible. As he stepped through the door, the room erupted in giggles, nicknaming him “Baldy.” A few curious boys came up and attempted to touch his newly shaved head. Overwhelmed by shame and anger, Mike shouted out, “You are mean!” Tears welled up in his eyes as Mike stood up and ran towards the door.
At that moment, Mr. Stone walked into the classroom with a ball of paper. With a gentle pat on Mike’s shoulder, he guided him back to his seat. As Mr. Stone made his way to the platform, the room fell silent. Holding up the crumpled ball of paper, he began to smooth out its wrinkles. “Each fold represented a scar of hurtful words. Even when we try to apologize,” Mr. Stone explained softly, “the wounds remain. Let us always speak with kindness and warmth.” From that day on, Mike learned a valuable lesson: the importance of kindness and empathy.
