My wife and I were at a crowded grocery store not long ago. It was a weekday evening, cold and wet and tense. People were carelessly blocking aisles, complaining and cutting one another off with their carts. At one point, two women quarreled for several minutes after colliding in the freezer section.
Things got worse at the checkout line. The cashier scanned a man's discount card, but he misread the savings on her screen as an additional charge. He decided she was acting intentionally and began to argue.
Other customers looked away as the cashier tried to reason with him. She called a manager, who took him to customer service. Shaken , she moved to the next customer in line.
We’ve all witnessed uncomfortable scenes like this in public places. My reaction when I see them is both personal and professional. I am a data analyst and sociologist who studies how and why people interact with one another--or why they choose not to. To me, the grocery scene was another example of how our trust in others has faded. But it was also a teachable moment on how we can rebuild our faith — starting with just one person.
Therefore, my wife and I reached the disturbed cashier. I grabbed a bottle of water from a nearby cooler and handed it to her. We learned her name was Beth.
“We felt bad about how that man treated you and wanted to buy this for you.” I said.
Beth’s face lit up and we talked as she scanned our items. She told us she had been working that evening through severe foot pain and would be having surgery later that week. We wished her well in her recovery, and she thanked us as we left.
That is the balancing act, the moment of countering social and emotional pain with healing, that will add up to restore trust across the United States. You can start that pattern in someone else's life , even in a place as ordinary as the neighborhood grocery store.
4. By describing the arguments, the author wants to show__________.
A. the job as a cashier is not easy. B. people in the U.S are unfriendly.
C. arguments in public are very common. D. confidence in each other has worn off.
5. How did Beth probably feel when the couple gave her a bottle of water?
A. Sad and regretful. B. Sorry and wronged.
C. Cheerful and rewarded. D. Grateful and relieved.
6. What's author's attitude towards Americans' regaining trust?
A. Doubtful. B. Optimistic.
C. Uncaring D. Cautious
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A Miserable Cashier. B. A Helping Hand.
C. Learning to Trust Again. D. Starting a new life.

Ethan Hardy started his Brigham Young University (BYU) experience as many students do — curious, yet undecided on a major, maybe music or biology — but he knew one thing forcertain: he was going to take advantage of every chance BYU provided him by paying it forward.
“Here at BYU, I’ve got so many opportunities that are invested in my success,” said Hardy. “I want to be someone who helps others along in their journey.”
During his first year and a half at BYU, Hardy has volunteered as a piano teacher at Provo’s South Franklin Community Center, teaching weekly piano lessons to children who might otherwise not be able to afford them. “It’s been very valuable,” said Hardy. “I love teaching and seeing students grow. But the reason I’ve stuck with it is the relationships I’ve built with these kids and their families.”
For Hardy, finding time each week amidst a busy school schedule to teach piano at the community center isn't a matter of trade-offs; it’s an important part of his college experience that has encouraged him to put his ability and character into action.
A gifted pianist, Hardy arrived on campus in 2022 with a deep understanding of the power of music. Still, he couldn’t forget his love for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). “I’ve always been drawn to subjects like math and science, which was why I was interested in medicine when I was young,” said Hardy.
Hardy recently began a summer internship (实习) at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he’s working with Dr. Chi-Fu Jeffrey Yang, a professor at Harvard Medical School, and other students researching lung cancer. He’ll also join a nonprofit (非营利组织), helping to raise awareness of the importance of lung cancer screening through events and community outreach.
Studying medicine by day and teaching music by night, Hardy is proving that when your priorities (优先事项) are right, maybe you really can “have it all.”
8. What did Hardy think of his university?
A. It is attractive to overseas students.
B. It has offered him great possibilities.
C. It has a good name in the local community.
D. It has played a role in reaching his music dream.
9. How has Hardy supported children at Provo’s South Franklin Community Center?
A. By improving their family relationships.
B. By inviting them to study at BYU.
C. By teaching them music for free.
D. By giving them a new piano.
10. What did Hardy focus on during his internship?
A. Setting up a nonprofit. B. Designing STEM courses.
C. Carrying out medical research. D. Organizing community activities.
11. Which of the following best describes Hardy?
A. Smart and warm-hearted. B. Honest and hard-working.
C. Creative and friendly. D. Brave and professional.

Handwriting notes in class might seem old-fashioned as digital technology affects nearly every aspect of learning. But a recent study in Frontiers in Psychology suggests that taking notes with pen and paper is still the best way to learn, especially for young children.
The new research builds on a 2014 study that suggested people may type notes quickly, without thinking much about what they’re writing-but writing by hand is slower and makes them actively pay attention to and process the incoming information. This conscious action of building on existing knowledge can make it easier for students to stay engaged and grasp new concepts.
To understand specific brain-activity differences during the two note-taking approaches, the authors of the new study sewed 256 electrodes (电极) into a hairnet. These sensors let the scientists record 36 students’ brain activity as they wrote or typed words displayed on a screen. When students wrote by hand, the sensors picked up widespread brain connectivity throughout visual regions that receive and process sensory information, and the motor cortex (运动皮层) that helps the brain use environmental inputs to inform a person’s next action. Typing, however, resulted in minimal activity in these brain regions.
Vanderbilt University educational neuroscientist Sophia Vinci-Booher says the recent study highlights the clear tie between physical actions and concept understanding, “As you’re writing a word, you’re taking this continuous understanding of something and using motor system to create it.” That creation then affects the visual system, where it’s processed again-strengthening the connection between an action and the words associated with it.
Vinci-Booher notes that the new findings don’t mean technology is always a disadvantage in the classroom. Digital devices can be more efficient for writing essays and offer more equal access to educational resources. However, there’s a growing trend of relying on digital devices to perform cognitive (认知的) tasks, such as taking photos instead of memorizing information. Yadurshana Sivashankar, an researcher at the University of Waterloo says, “If we’re not actively using these areas, then they are going to become worse over time, whether it’s memory or motor skills.”
12. Why does the author mention the 2014 study?
A. To present different research findings. B. To make the new research more convincing.
C. To compare two note taking approaches. D. To show the advantage of writing slowly.
13. What can be learned from the experiment in Paragraph 3?
A. Sensors were used to process visual information.
B. Electrodes were connected to students’ hair directly.
C. Writing by hand activated more brain activity than typing.
D. Typing stimulated the motor cortex to inform following action.
14. What would Sophia Vinci-Booher probably advise students to do?
A. Make better use of motor system. B. Take advantage of digital devices.
C. Adopt a new approach to taking notes. D. Memorize words by writing essays.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Technology is not a disadvantage in classroom.
B. Writing by hand comes with learning benefits.
C. Taking notes enhances students’ brain activity.
D. Two note-taking approaches have clear differences.

Aunt Evie had a dollhouse. It had many toys there. Every Friday afternoon, I went to Aunt Evie’s home with my parents. The adults would sit around a table in the dining room, eating pie and talking, while I played in the dollhouse for hours.
Sometimes I would pick up these lovely toys and place them in different positions. It was really fun. One time I asked Aunt Evie where she got the toys so that I could buy some, too. To my disappointment, Aunt Evie said that most of them were specially handmade gifts from her friends and couldn’t be bought anywhere. One such toy was a little bear, which was my favorite. It was so beautiful that I wanted to own it badly. “If I take it, Aunt Evie may not notice it. ” I said to myself.
Therefore, on a Friday afternoon, I attempted to take the little bear away from Aunt Evie’s dollhouse. I had to wait until nobody was watching me, ‘and it took me hours to get the courage to put the little bear in my pocket. Once I got the little bear, I couldn’t wait to go home. I had to hide it somewhere at home, so that no one would know I took it. That night after I went home with my parents, I couldn’t go to sleep. “What a bad person I am! I stole something from my loved Aunt Evie.” I thought. When I woke up the next morning, I felt awful, but I couldn’t tell my parents, let alone return the little bear to Aunt Evie. I was embarrassed about my behavior. At some point, I started to hate the little bear and myself. And I knew if I didn’t do something, I wouldn’t get away from those bad feelings.

Dear Peter,
I hope this email finds you well. I’m writing to ask for your help regarding my oral English learning, which has been quite challenging for me recently.
I often feel extremely nervous when attempting to speak English. Even if I’m familiar with the topic, the words just seem to get stuck in my throat. Additionally, I struggle a lot when trying to understand native speakers. Their fast-paced conversations and various accents make it difficult for me to catch the main ideas.
Could you please offer me some practical advice? Maybe suggest some effective ways to boost my confidence in speaking or recommend useful resources like English podcasts or apps. I would really appreciate it.
Thank you so much in advance.
Best regards,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】Paragraph I:
So I decided to tell my mom what I had done. After I told her all the story, I couldn’t hold back my tears. “I can’t live with myself and what I’ve done, ” I said. My mom shook her head in disappointment. “There’s only one way to make this right. You have to return the little bear and apologize to Aunt Evie, ” she said. Seized with fright, I stood frozen to the spot, thinking Aunt Evie would hate me. Eventually, with my mom’s encouragement, I got up the courage to head for Aunt Evie’s home.
Paragraph 2:
My hand was shaking when I rang the doorbell of Aunt Evie’s house. She unlocked the door, smiled and looked as if she already knew everything. I presented her with the little bear and made my apologies. “I admire your courage to return the bear. I would like to give it to you as a gift for your honesty. You’re always my favorite niece. ”Aunt Evie said. On hearing that, I felt a wave of relief. Mom’s words rang in my ears, “Honesty is the best policy!”
