B Change is something that has always excited Dr Lori Piowlski, who embraced new online methods of teaching. However, she didn’t always want to be a teacher. “I often said I would never be a teacher.” says PiowIski. “I grew up where a lot of my family members were teachers. I honestly didn’t want to do what everyone else in my family had done. I wanted to be a lawyer.” Despite her wish to follow a career in law, she couldn’t ignore her “true” calling in life. “I started teaching piano when I was in high school.” says Piowlski. “I loved every minute that I spent with my students, watching them grow and struggle. I think you learn the most when you face your struggles and that is one of the things I want to instill (灌输) in my students. I want to say it’s OK to struggle. It’s OK to have that conflict inside of you that says this is hard, learning hard — but that’s when you grow the most. So I think that piano teaching gave me that and instilled the love of teaching in me.” While at college, she reflected on her time as a piano teacher and realized she had to follow her calling to teach. “I gave in to my calling and became an educator,” says Piowlski. “After graduating, I found a contract and taught my first class in first grade in California.” Piowlski stayed there for 14 years, teaching special education and general education to students from pre-K level all the way through to 12th grade. She then moved back to Minnesota to raise her children. While taking this career break, Piowlski decided to study for her PhD. “I got my PhD because that’s something I’d always wanted to do and I wanted to show my kids that with perseverance (坚持) you can do anything,” says Piowlski. “They were in school. so it wasn’t easy.” Anyhow, she managed to graduate with determination and support from family members. 24. What contributed to Piowlski’s decision to be a teacher? A. Her family influence. B. Her duty as a mother. C. Her experience in teaching piano. D. Her failed attempt to be a lawyer. 25. What attitude did Piowlski hold towards struggles? A. Dismissive. B. Tolerant. C. Skeptical. D. Critical. 26. Why did Piowlski move back to Minnesota? A. To care for her children. B. To find a better-paid job. C. To make a change. D. To pursue her PhD. 27. What did Piowlski want to convey to her children? A. Time and tide waits for no man. B. Education is the key to success. C. Love lifts barriers. D. Sticking to dreams pays off. C Playing a musical instrument or singing could help keep the brain healthy in older age, UK researchers suggest. In their report, published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, they say music should be considered as part of a lifestyle approach to maintain the brain. More than 1,100 people aged over 40, with an average age of 68, were studied. Scientists observed their brain function data, looking at the effects of playing an instrument, singing, reading and listening to music. The researchers compared the cognitive (认知) data of those in the study who engaged in music in some way in their lives, with those who never had. Their results showed that people who played musical instruments benefited the most, which may be because of the “multiple cognitive demands” of the activity. “Playing the piano or keyboard appeared to be particularly beneficial. Simply listening to music did not appear to help cognitive health. The benefit seen with singing might be partly because of the known social aspects of being in a choir or group.” the researchers say. “Because we have such sensitive brain tests for this study, we are able to look at individual aspects of the brain function, such as short-term memory, long-term memory and problem-solving,” lead author Anne Corbett said. “Playing an instrument has a particularly big effect, and people who continue to play into an older age saw an additional benefit,” she said. “Our brain is a muscle like anything else and it needs to be exercised, and learning to read music is a bit like learning a new language.” In the study, people who read music regularly had better numerical memory. “The message is around how people can proactively reduce their risk of cognitive decline or dementia (痴呆), and really thinking about engaging with music as a way of doing that.” Anne said. However, she added. “It would be naive to think taking up a musical instrument would mean you won’t develop dementia.” 28. What does the research say about music? A. It takes constant practice. B. It does old people’s brains a favor. C. It improves long-term memory. D. It sharpens the language ability. 29. How is the research carried out? A. By conducting a survey. B. By citing an expert. C. By making comparison. D. By exercising the brain. 30. Which best describes playing musical instruments? A. Emotionally disturbing. B. Mentally pleasing. C. Physically challenging. D. Cognitively demanding. 31. Which word can replace the underlined word “naive” in the last paragraph? A. innocent. B. complicated. C. realistic. D. wise. D Solar and wind energy are transforming how we power our world, but to fully use these renewable sources, we need reliable and affordable batteries to store energy. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) have taken a step towards this goal by inventing a water-soluble chemical additive that enhances the performance of bromide aqueous flow (溴化物水溶液) batteries, a promising energy storage solution. Current large-scale energy storage relies on lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries, which have limitations like safety concerns, risk of fires and reliance on complex international supply chains. In contrast, aqueous flow batteries could offer a super and more sustainable alternative. These batteries use water-based liquid that circulate over electrodes (电极) separated by a membrane (膜). They are scalable and less dangerous than lithium-ion batteries. Bromide, a cheap and widely available ion, could replace expensive vanadium in flow batteries. However, bromide-based batteries face challenges: Bromide ions can pass through the membrane, reducing efficiency, or form a messy oil or poisonous bromine gas, making them impractical for large-scale use. To tackle these issues, the UW-Madison team, including Patrick Sullivan and Gyohun Choi, developed a new additive called a “soft-hard zwitterionic trapper”. This additive packages bromide ions, keeping them water-soluble while preventing them from passing through the membrane or forming harmful byproducts. As a result, the battery becomes more efficient and stable. With the additive, the researchers achieved remarkable results: The batteries lasted almost two months without performance decay, compared to just one day without it. “For green energy storage, durability is critical. These batteries need to function for 10 to 20 years,” says another researcher. Moving forward, the team aims to refine their discovery. Choi will explore fundamental science, while Sullivan, now CEO of a renewable energy startup, will work on commercializing the additive, already proven to be producible on an industrial scale. 32. What problem does the new chemical additive solve? A. Producing more energy in smaller batteries. B. Advancing bromide aqueous flow batteries. C. Improving the safety of lithium-ion batteries. D. Replacing vanadium with expensive materials. 33. Why are aqueous flow batteries safer than lithium-ion batteries? A. They are based on water-based liquid. B. They rely on an international supply chain. C. They have no membranes separating electrodes. D. They use bromide ions instead of vanadium ions. 34. What is the new additive used to do? A. To allow bromide ions to form a stable gas. B. To prevent bromide ions from causing inefficiency issues. C. To increase the speed of energy transfer in batteries. D. To remove the need for membranes in batteries. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. The Role of Solar and Wind Energy in the Future B. The Benefits of Lithium-Ion Batteries in Energy Storage C. Challenges of Large-Scale Renewable Energy Storage D. A Breakthrough in Bromide-Based Flow Batteries A field trip is an educational excursion (远足) outside of the classroom environment. Our plan was simple: stock up on essentials for the week and enjoy a leisurely lunch at the Oakwood Center, a busy shopping mall. Lucy, feeling excited for the family outing, chattered delightedly as we packed into the car. As we drove through the tree-lined streets of our quiet suburb, the conversation turned towards the treats we might be mouth-watering about. Lucy was set on some creamy chocolate, while John wanted to try some exotic (异国风情的) fruits like dragon fruit or star fruit, adding a little of adventure to our grocery list. The atmosphere in the car was light and joyful, providing a perfect escape from our usual daily routines. Upon arriving at the supermarket, we grabbed a cart (购物车) and began our expedition. The store was alive with the sounds of weekend shoppers and the colorful displays of fresh produce and seasonal goods. Each of us pointed out different items and playfully put them into the cart, with our carefully prepared shopping list quickly forgotten in favor of more spontaneous (自发的) selections. After filling our cart with a mix of groceries, we headed to the checkout lanes. The lines were surprisingly long so we had to wait longer. I reached into my purse to get my wallet for payment, but my hand met with an unexpected emptiness. A quick, crazy search through my bag confirmed my worst fear: My wallet was not there. Panic set in as I tried to recall the last time I had used it. Seeing this, John suggested we repeat our steps after paying for the groceries with his wallet, which, thankfully, he had remembered to bring. He comforted me with a calm look, and his presence was like a steady anchor in the sudden storm of anxiety that had overtaken me. I felt terrible because of losing the personal items and the inconvenience of replacing all the cards. As I was sorting out the payment, John walked to the customer service desk. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A week later, I received a package with no sender (寄件人) written on it. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 高三年级下学期开学考试 英语 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? Which of the following has increased in the city in recent years? A. Heart disease. B. Regular cyclists. C. Traffic jams. 20. What is the last benefit about? A. Health. B. Money. C. Time. B 18. B 19. C 20. M: Good morning everyone. As you know, I’ll talk to you about the company’s new plan to encourage employees to come to work by bike instead of taking a car. Let’s look at the benefits to employees. One of the benefits is about finance. Obviously, it costs a lot to buy and run a car, but bicycles are much cheaper. Cyclists don’t have to pay for the insurance, and the cost of buying and repairing a bike is much lower than that of a car. So you’d save a lot of money by cycling. And for most employees, cycling will also reduce the amount of time to get to and from work. Certainly over the past ten or twenty years, traffic jams in the city have been getting more frequent and worse, and now it’s common for cyclists to overtake a line of cars that are stuck in traffic. The health benefits of the plan are probably well known, but I’ll just run through them. Studies have shown that cycling four miles a day help reduce the risk of heart disease, and people who cycle regularly look energetic. So let’s make a change now. A Since 1975, the Ironguard has been a long-standing tradition in the Long Beach Junior Lifeguard Program. C 25. B 26. A 27. 根据第二段中“I started teaching piano when I was in high school.(我上高中的时候就开始教钢琴了)”,“I loved every minute that I spent with my students, watching them grow and struggle.(我珍惜和学生们在一起的每一刻,看着他们成长,经历困难)”和“So I think that piano teaching gave me that and instilled the love of teaching in me.(所以我觉得教钢琴让我有了这样的感悟,也让我爱上了教学)”可知,Piowlski在高中时开始教钢琴,她很享受和学生在一起的时光,并且认为教钢琴让她爱上了教学,这促使她决定成为一名教师。 根据第二段中“I think you learn the most when you face your struggles and that is one of the things I want to instill (灌输) in my students. I want to say it’s OK to struggle. It’s OK to have that conflict inside of you that says this is hard, learning hard — but that’s when you grow the most.(我认为当你面对困难时,学到的东西是最多的,这也是我想灌输给学生们的理念之一。我想告诉他们,经历困难没什么大不了的。你内心觉得学习很难、这件事很难,有这样的冲突也没关系——但正是在这个时候,你成长得最快)”可知,Piowlski认为当人们面对困难时能学到最多,她想向学生灌输可以经历困难,内心有觉得困难的冲突是正常的这种观念,说明她对困难持宽容的态度。故选B。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“She then moved back to Minnesota to raise her children.(然后,她搬回了明尼苏达州去抚养她的孩子们)”可知,Piowlski搬回明尼苏达州是为了抚养她的孩子,也就是照顾她的孩子。故选A。 根据最后一段中““I got my PhD because that’s something I’d always wanted to do and I wanted to show my kids that with perseverance (坚持) you can do anything,” says Piowlski.(Piowlski说:“我拿到了博士学位,因为这是我一直想做的事,而且我想让我的孩子们明白,只要坚持不懈,你就能做成任何事。”)可知,Piowlski攻读博士学位并且想向孩子们展示只要坚持就能做成任何事,即坚持梦想会有回报。故选D。 C Playing a musical instrument or singing could help keep the brain healthy in older age, UK researchers suggest. The researchers compared the cognitive (认知的) data of those in the study who engaged in music in some way in their lives, with those who never had. C. realistic. D. wise. 【答案】28. B 29. C 30. D 31. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了音乐活动(尤其是演奏乐器)对老年人认知健康的积极影响及研究方法。 【28题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中“Playing a musical instrument or singing could help keep the brain healthy in older age, UK researchers suggest.(英国研究人员指出,演奏乐器或唱歌有助于老年人保持大脑健康)”可知,研究表明音乐对老年人的大脑有益。故选B。 【29题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“The researchers compared the cognitive (认知的) data of those in the study who engaged in music in some way in their lives, with those who never had.(研究人员将研究中那些在生活里以某种方式接触过音乐的人的认知数据,与那些从未接触过音乐的人的认知数据进行了对比)”可推知,这项研究是通过比较的方式进行的。故选C。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Their results showed that people who played musical instruments benefited the most, which may be because of the ‘multiple cognitive demands’ of the activity.(他们的研究结果表明,演奏乐器的人受益最大,这可能是因为这项活动的“多种认知需求”)”可知,演奏乐器涉及“多重认知需求”,这意味着它需要大量的脑力投入,会激活大脑的多个区域,这也是它对认知健康如此有益的原因。所以用“认知要求高”来描述演奏乐器最合适。故选D。 【31题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词前文““The message is around how people can proactively reduce their risk of cognitive decline or dementia (痴呆), and really thinking about engaging with music as a way of doing that.” Anne said. A。 D Solar and wind energy are transforming how we power our world, but to fully use these renewable sources, we need reliable and affordable batteries to store energy. A Breakthrough in Bromide-Based Flow Batteries 【答案】32. B 33. A 34. B 35. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 As I was sorting out the payment, John walked to the customer service desk. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A week later, I received a package with no sender (寄件人) written on it. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 As I was sorting out the payment, John walked to the customer service desk. I was so anxious about losing the wallet. Because this is never just about the money; it’s the personal connections to the items we carry that weigh heavily on us. John came back from the customer service desk with no luck. The wallet was still missing. I felt a deep sense of loss after several tries. Despite the upset, John headed the two of us to a nearby park, aiming to distract ourselves and create some happy memories, focusing on the time we had together rather than what was lost. A week later, I received a package with no sender (寄件人) written on it. Feeling strange, I opened the package. Inside of it were my lost wallet and a handwritten script. The handwritten note was brief but heartfelt. It read, “Found this outside the supermarket and thought you might need it back.” Relief washed over me, finding all my cards and even the cash still there. I was touched by the stranger’s honesty and kindness. There was no name or return address, but this simple act of goodwill will be rooted in my heart for a long time. 词汇激活 行为类 ①打开包裹:open the package/unwrap the package ②驾车前往:drive to//make a drive to ③从……回来:come back from/return from 情绪类 ①宽慰:relief wash over sb./feel relieved/be comforted/be at ease ②被感动:be touched by/be moved by 【点睛】【高分句型1】Because this is never just about the money; it’s the personal connections to the items we carry that weigh heavily on us.(运用了because引导的原因状语从句,强调句型,we carry为省略关系词的定语从句) 【高分句型2】Relief washed over me, finding all my cards and even the cash still there.(运用了现在分词短语作状语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$null
