Top Four Cities in Africa for a Great Vacation
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Getting around: Taxis are fine; walking is better.
Though Ethiopian food is familiar to a lot of people, on the streets of Addis, it’s all about coffee. Social life in Addis is built on its preparation and consumption. It’s a chance to sit down among a mostly local crowd and order a coffee.
Lusaka, Zambia
Getting around: Taxis are affordable.
This city is known for Victoria Falls. Small shops are lit at night, and they sell everything from newspapers to soft drinks. On the way, there is the outdoor Mingling Bar, where customers can enjoy a can of Original American Cola.
Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire
Getting around: Taxis are cheap.
Abidjan’s 5 million people are spread out across four areas. When night falls, Yopougon is worth heading to. The roads are dusty in the part of Abidjan, but like many cities where living spaces are small, Abidjan lives its life on its streets. Just to the east of Yopougon is the Plateau, the business area. This area’s modernist building is great and mostly the result of a cocoa-and coffee-based economic development in the 1950s and 1960s.
Dakar, Senegal
Getting around: Taxis are plentiful.
Possibly the best thing about Dakar is its beach restaurants: special collections of tables and chairs where customers are served the freshly caught fish. Servers will often offer to run out to a nearby corner store to buy beer and bring it to the table.
1. Where is Victoria Falls?
A. In Abidjan. B. In Addis Ababa. C. In Lusaka. D. In Dakar.
2. What contributes most to the Plateau’s modernist building?
A. Art. B. Coffee business. C. History. D. Population.
3. What is special about the beach restaurants in Dakar?
A. They are self-service. B. They are all about coffee.
C. They serve freshly caught fish. D. They offer free Original American Cola.

At the age of 16, Lasse Stolley from Germany went out for a change after graduation from junior high school. Little did he know that this change would take him farther than 500,000 kilometers — all on trains.
Inspired by a movie he had watched online, Stolley bought a Bahncard 100, a ticket that allows unlimited (无限制的) travel on all Deutsche Bahn trains in Germany for a year. But Stolley didn’t just travel on those trains. He made his home on trains, living there full-time. During the day, he took trips and at night, he slept across the seats on high-speed trains.
“I can decide every day where I want to go, whether to the Alps, to a big city or to the sea,” Stolley said.
Each morning, Stolley would check the train connections for the day, and decide what journeys he would take based on the weather and his mood (心情). He might stop off at a swimming pool for a shower, or enjoy the views with a hike between train rides.
While he didn’t pay rent, Stolley said that he had spent around $10,000 a year on living expenses, including his $6,400 train pass and entry cost to things like swimming pools. But since Stolley was a “Platinum” Deutsche Bahn customer, he could eat from Deutsche Bahn for free.
To cover his extra cost, he made a buck on the move by working as a programmer from his laptop (手提电脑). In 2023 alone, Stolley spent over 3,700 hours on trains. He also took trains across Europe with an Interrail pass, and travelled as far as Ankara in Turkey. All of his adventures were recorded on his online blog, named “Life on the Train”.
4. What drove Stolley’s interest in travelling by train?
A. A lesson. B. A book. C. A ticket. D. A film.
5. Why was Stolley’s journey special?
A. He lived on trains. B. He never got off the same train.
C. His train journey lasted over a year. D. He didn’t spend any money.
6. What do the underlined words “a buck” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. A choice. B. Paper. C. A difference. D. Money.
7. Which word can best describe Stolley?
A. Honest. B. Adventurous. C. Easygoing. D. Warmhearted.

Every year the Weifang International Kite Festival amazes visitors and netizens with innovative (创新的) kites, as “paper birds” of unimaginable designs keep appearing in the sky.
This year 622 kite artists from 59 countries and regions took part in the event. There were a variety of activities, including daylight and night kite shows, a kite flying competition, an exhibition of kite-themed creative artworks and so on.

“The weather station in Furnace Creek, Death Valley, California, reported a temperature of 54. 4℃ on 16 August,” said Clare Nullis, World Meteorological Organization (WMO) spokesperson. “If verified (证实), it would be the highest temperature on Earth since 1931, and the third- hottest temperature ever recorded on the planet. ”
Speaking in Geneva, Ms. Nullis told reporters that WMO had tasked a group of international experts to check the reading by examining the observation (观测), the equipment used, and how it compared to data collected at nearby stations.
According to WMO's data, the hottest temperature ever recorded was in Furnace Creek, Death Valley, California, reaching 56. 7℃ on 10 July 1913. The next highest temperature was set in July 1931 in Kebili, Tunisia, reaching 55℃. Other high temperature records include54℃ in Mitribah, Kuwait on 21 July 2016.
The findings show that the equipment at Furnace Creek meteorological station was in proper working condition at the time of Sunday's observation, Ms. Nullis noted. “Although the full verification process will likely take many months, ” Ms. Nullis said, “ all the markers so far show that this is a fair and acceptable observation. ”
The very hot conditions have come along with a heatwave on the US west coast. The US National Weather Service (NWS) has issued (发布) numerous heat warnings explaining that the high temperatures will continue this week. The NWS in Las Vegas, which covers the Death Valley area, said online, “We are faced with a long- lasting heat event. Another run at 54. 4℃- plus temperatures in Death Valley remains possible.”
The development follows repeated warnings from WMO about high temperatures which are having a bad influence, causing wildfires in places such as forests and grasslands.

15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The New Development Follows a Summer Event
B. The Hot Weather Has a Bad Influence on Tunisia
C. WMO Carried out a Survey of the Mistaken Report

On a usual Saturday evening, Mr. Olivia and his wife were preparing their famous lasagna (千层面), a family tradition passed down through generations. The kitchen was a place for activity, with the children, the 4-year-old Emma and the 12-year-old Jake, helping out to the best of their abilities.
Emma was mixing the sauce (酱汁), her small arms working slowly and carefully, while Jake was tasked with cutting the cheese, a job he took with great pride. Mr. Olivia usually was at the table, rolling out the dough (面团) with the help of his wife. The family was busy with their yearly tradition of making lasagna together, a time that brought them closer and allowed them to share stories and laughter.
As the night went on, the conversation turned to the week’s events. Emma talked about her wins at school, and Jake talked about his recent soccer game. Their parents listened patiently, offering words of encouragement and advice.
Just when everyone felt in harmony, Emma looked over at Jake with a curious eye. She wanted to try Jake’s job of cutting the cheese, but he didn’t agree. 第二节 (满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
Emma cried, feeling worried about the mess and the argument. Jake stood still, his face flushed and his head bowed. He also got upset about the argument. Their father looked at them in silence while their mom came over and calmed them down. “It’s OK, honey,” she said. “Argument will bring much trouble, so let’s change it in another way.” Instead of scolding, she suggested they work together to clean up the mess. And then, she asked Jake to show Emma how to use the knife properly, turning the situation into a learning opportunity.
With their mom’s advice, Jake began to teach Emma how to cut the cheese. At first, Jake showed his movements to Emma, and Emma watched carefully. Later, Jake told her how to hold the knife and where to cut the cheese without hurting herself. Gradually, Emma’s tears stopped, and she began to smile as she made her first successful cheese cut. The kitchen then was full of laughter and encouragement again. After their delicious dinner and the clean up, they all went to sleep. A sense of love, understanding, and the simple joy of being a family filled the quiet kitchen, along with memories of the day.
