I’m Lin Yue from China. It’s my great honor to be here to share with you Chinese table manners. In China, we respect the elderly, so they are supposed to start eating first. We use chopsticks instead of forks or knives. It is important to use chopsticks properly and avoid pointing them at others. Also, holding the rice bowl with your hands while eating is a common practice, as it shows politeness. Furthermore, you are expected not to talk with food in your mouth, as it is considered impolite. Don’t make too much noise when eating. If you are full, you are supposed to tell the host and give thanks for the dinner. Thank you for your attention. And I really hope it will be useful when you pay a visit to China. 1.What’s the relationship between the two speakers? And when I was in college, I was lucky to get a chance to visit the famous Shaolin Temple in Henan Province. At the time, I didn’t realize that besides the long-expected Kungfu, thousands of surprises were waiting for me in China. To begin with, I was not prepared for the weather. It was a difficult change from hot summer in Africa to cold winter in China. The language was a huge problem for me as well. Getting used to Chinese food also seemed impossible then, but now I’m a great fan of the food here. The Kungfu training was far from easy and the first week was the hardest. We got up at 5 a.m. and practiced throughout the day. The rest of the time was used for having meals and studying Chinese language and culture. Although it was very tiring, the repeated and long-time exercises built up both my body and mind. The life in Shaolin Temple made me realize how important politeness, respect and perseverance (毅力) are to the basic spirit of Chinese Kungfu and that they should be practiced throughout our daily lives. Day by day, I came to notice that China is a place full of wonders, a place where hard work pays off. And I finally fell in love with its culture and people. That’s why I’ve decided to stay and continue my studies in China. The world is becoming better united, and all our cultures are amazing. I will happily be a bridge of China to the world, sharing my stories in this open and people-centered country. 19.How did the writer first get to know China? A.By watching Kungfu movies. B.By tasting Chinese food. C.By reading Kungfu stories. D.By taking a Chinese class. 20.What did the writer learn about the spirit of Chinese Kungfu according to Paragraph 3? D.The importance of patience and respect. 21.Why did the writer decide to continue his studies in China? A.He wanted to visit more of China’s wonders. B.He found a well-paid job and began a new life. C.He got a chance to play a role in a Kungfu movie. D.He developed a love for Chinese culture and people. 22.What is the writer’s purpose of writing this passage? A.To express thanks to his home country. B.To share his wonderful experience in China. C.To invite more people to learn Chinese Kungfu. D.To show the friendship between China and Africa. 根据“Born and grown up in Africa, I first learned about China through famous Kungfu movies.” 故选A。 20. 根据“The life in Shaolin Temple made me realize how important politeness, respect and perseverance (毅力) are to the basic spirit of Chinese Kungfu and that they should be practiced throughout our daily lives.” 根据“And I finally fell in love with its culture and people. There was such a “gap”, as Sarah puts it, compared with western recipes (菜谱) presented on TVs or Blogs. As it turns out, though, the Leungs have right positions to do something about this. Bill, the father, had spent years cooking beef at his family’s Chinese American restaurant. Judy, the mom, was born and raised in Shanghai and had deep knowledge about traditional Shanghainese cooking. Meanwhile, the two sisters had grown up in the New Jersey country, eating their parents’ food, but also growing in American food culture. So, in 2013, the Leungs started a blog called The Woks of Life. Different from other food blogs, it’s intergenerational heritage (代际传承) cooking culture—The four family members took turns posting recipes, each sharing their own favorites with their area of expert knowledge. Kaitlin says that The Woks of Life follows along line of pioneers—like Joyce Chen, Martin Yan and Ming Tsai, who first started to bring Chinese home cooking into the US and got more attention. “We feel excited we’ve made a meaningful mask over these years, explaining that there is a huge need for these recipes in the US,” she says, “it’s about the gap, yes, but there’s also a huge need. Asian Americans look to reconnect with the food of their heritage.” “Five years ago, you wouldn’t have been able to find a ton of Chinese recipes in the New York Times,” Kaitlin says, “now you can find them from blogs like The Woks of Life.” 23.Which of the following best explains the underlined words “gap” in Para. 1? gap   n.   /gæp/ ①A break between two objects. ②A difference between two views or situations. ③A period of time when sth. stops or between two events. ④A space where sth. is missing. A.① B.② C.③ D.④ 24.What is the author’s purpose in writing Para. 2? A.To show the Leungs’ love for home cooking food. B.To introduce the Leungs’ food blog to young people. C.To point out the Leungs’ advantages to start a food blog. D.To express the Leungs’ different feelings about hometown. 25.Why is The Woks of Life popular according to the passage? A.It provides food for ABCs and Chinese immigrants. B.It first brought Chinese home cooking into America. C.It was started by Joice Chen, Martin Yan and Ming Tsai. D.It connects Asian Americans with their food tradition again. 26.Which is the best title for the passage? A.The Woks of Life. B.Western Recipes. C.History of Home Cooking. D.Pioneers in Spreading Culture. 【答案】23.B 24.C 25.D 26.A 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了年轻一代美国华裔在做中国菜时遇到的困难以及The Woks of Life博客的诞生。 23.词句猜测题。根据“but found it really hard to learn how to prepare it. There was such a “gap”, as Sarah puts it, compared with western recipes (菜谱) presented on TVs or Blogs.”可知,Sarah和Kaitlin Leung对中餐很感兴趣,但是发现很难准备中餐,Sarah认为与电视或博客上展示的西方食谱相比,这是一种“差距”。因此“gap”表示“A difference between two views or situations.”。故选B。 24.主旨大意题。根据“As it turns out, though, the Leungs have right positions to do something about this.”以及通读第二段内容可知,第二段主要指出了Leungs一家开始一个美食博客的优势。故选C。 25.细节理解题。根据“Asian Americans look to reconnect with the food of their heritage.”可知,The Woks of Life很受欢迎是因为它再次将亚裔美国人与他们的饮食传统联系起来。故选D。 26.最佳标题题。通读全文内容可知,本文讲述了年轻一代美国华裔在做中国菜时遇到的困难以及The Woks of Life博客的诞生。故选项A适合作为本文的标题。故选A。 D How do we use strong body language to make us seem powerful while making a speech? Vanessa, who is a researcher of human behavior once said that Tony the Tiger has some of the best body language we can learn from. The picture is Tony the Tiger’s typical pose on every cereal box across America. Researchers have found that the broader we stand, the more powerful we feel. So by examining Tony’s pose, we see that he is standing very broadly with his feet. If you look closer, you’ll see he is pointing upwards, as if he were saying, “I am going up” or “________”. If you look at Tony again, you can see his smile lines reach almost all the way up to his eyes. His smile is not only open, but it is hugely expressive. This smile design makes Tony look incredibly happy, excited and optimistic. Tony the Tiger always faces forward. When we are talking with people face to face, we are showing a sign of respect. So if you look at the cereal box, you may feel like Tony is paying attention to you and this is exactly what kids like to see. An interesting study found that 57 out of the 86 cereal boxes had characters looking down. Imagine a child is walking around in the supermarket, hand-in-hand with his or her mom. The small child is looking up at all the boxes and they see the cereal characters looking down at them. When the child looks up and makes eye contact with the box, this attracts the child’s attention to that character. Making eye contact is great because it can increase feelings of love and interest! Great body language during the speech draws the audience’s attention to your points, and helps you connect with your listeners and build up a good relationship. Next time you are going to speak in public, just think about Tony, the Tiger! 27.Which is the most suitable sentence to fill in the blank “________”? A.This is me. B.I’m No.1. C.Who are you? D.Why not? 28.What is Paragraph 5 mainly about? A.Making eye contact with people is helpful. B.Characters can attract children by looking up. C.The number is useful to the study on characters. D.Many cereal boxes have characters looking down. 29.What’s the main purpose of the passage? A.To introduce Tony the Tiger. B.To tell people how to make a speech. C.To talk about Vanessa’s interesting study. D.To help people have better body language. 30.What is the structure of the passage? A. B. C. D. 【答案】27.B 28.A 29.D 30.C 【导语】本文主要介绍了肢体语言的好处,鼓励人们更好地使用肢体语言。 27.推理判断题。根据第二段“If you look closer, you’ll see he is pointing upwards, as if he were saying, ‘I am going up’”并结合配图中的手势可知,图中老虎托尼竖着一根手指,仿佛表示自己是第一名。故选B。 28.段落大意题。通读第五段可知,通过对麦片盒子的研究,说明眼神交流可以增加爱和兴趣的感觉,这对人们来说是有助的。故选A。 29. Express Your Thanks You probably say “thank you” often—such as when a friend holds the door, or a grandparent sends a gift for your birthday. Showing thanks not only makes others feel good, but also helps you feel more joyful and less sad or stressed, according to experts at Harvard University. It is also something you can practice. Here’s how. 31 Take a few minutes to find out what you’re thankful for. Is it someone or something that makes you happy or makes you laugh? Is it someone you know—like a parent or teacher—who helps you? Is it something that makes your life better? Maybe it’s an activity or a hobby you enjoy. It can also be something you have that you realize others may not have. 32 Try to write the things you’re thankful for on sticky notes every day. Make a “thanks wall” in your room so that you can read them often. Whenever you feel upset, you can take them out to remind yourself of what makes you feel happy and thankful. Let being thankful become a part of your life. 33 Giving your time to others helps them—but it can also benefit you, too. For example, if you clean the yard for an elderly neighbor, you can take a moment to feel thankful that you are able to make their day easier. If you help a classmate with homework, you can feel good about sharing your knowledge. 34 Thanksgiving is a perfect time to exchange thanks with family. At the dinner table, each person can take a turn to share at least one thing they feel thankful for, for example, to give thanks for the company of the people in your life or the natural beauty of the outdoors. A.Make it a habit B.Do a “thanks search” C. Volunteer your time D.Start with a greeting E. Share thanks with family Who or what do you want to say thanks to? How do you express your thanks? I’m his butler (男管家). Mr. Ram said that a little boy would come. It must be you.” “Has Mr. Ram gone out ?” the boy said, “I think I’d better visit 40 again in a while.” I nodded and asked him, “Do you like playing the violin?” “Yes, but I’m too 41 to afford one.” the boy replied. “Then, I’ll give you this violin.” The boy looked at me surprisingly, 42 he still picked up the violin. While going out of the room, he 43 saw a huge photo of me playing the violin at the Grand Theatre of Sydney on the wall. His face turned 44 . He stood there for a moment and ran out. He must have understood what had happened because no master would put up the butler’s 45 on the wall of his living room. A few 46 later, at a music competition in Melbourne, I was invited to be the judge (评委). Finally, a violin player called Merritt 47 the first prize. After the prize-giving, Merritt ran to me holding a violin box. His face red, and asked,“Mr. Brian, do you still know me? You 48 me the violin, which I have treasured ever since! A.The value of friendship and trust. B.The quality of kindness and honesty. C.The balance of training and studying. C Like many ABCs (American-born Chinese) and young Chinese immigrants (移民), sisters Sarah and Kaitlin Leung took great interest in Chinese food after they’d grown up, but found it really hard to learn how to prepare it. D How do we use strong body language to make us seem powerful while making a speech?
