How I’ve Changed!
I’ve changed a lot in the past few years.
I used to be thin and tall, but now I’m strong. I used to be a little bit shy, but now I’m more outgoing. I used to spend a lot of time playing games with my friends, but now I have to study all the time. I can learn something by reading books. When I join the basketball club, I make more friends and have a better understanding about learning.
All in all, I am very happy with these changes.

At the National Music Hall in Madrid, Wednesday’s performance of Handel’s Messiah was cut in by a mobile phone ringing in a row close to the stage. Conductor (乐队指挥) William Christie stopped the performance, turned, pointed at the man, and shouted, “Out! You have just broken one of the most beautiful works ever written.” The phone owner got up and quickly left the hall.
Comments
Danny 23 December 14:50
Good for him. It’s time to say no to this kind of behavior. If people can’t live without their phones for two hours, they shouldn’t go to concerts. We need a new rule for concert halls and theatres:you have to leave your phone in a certain place outside the hall. And the same for the cinema!
REPLY Cassie 23 December 17:30
Great idea. I would also add another rule:if you are caught with a mobile phone in the concert hall, you might pay a fine!
REPLY Anton 23 December 19:43
If people aren’t allowed to use phones at concerts, the theatre will lose a lot of audience (观众). There are people who have work phones, and their companies tell them they mustn’t give their phones to anyone.
REPLY Kasia 24 December 01:16
I think all concert halls should block mobile phone reception (信号) .
REPLY Marcel 24 December 07:08
Blocking reception wouldn’t solve the problem. Sometimes it’s an alarm that makes the phone ring. What really matters is to raise the awareness of rules.
16.Why did the conductor ask the man to gct out of thc music hall?
A.Because the man fell aslecp. B.Bccausc the man shouted loudly.
C.Because the man’s phone rang. D.Bccause the man fook a photo of him.
17.Who holds a different opinion from Danny’s?
A.Cassie. B.Anton. C.Kasia. D.Marcel.
18.Where can you most probably read the text?
A.In a diary B.In a magazine C.In a guidcbook. D.On the Internet.

Have you ever wondered what animals are talking about? With the development of AI, we may be able to understand their languages!
In Professor Karen Bakker’s new book, The Sounds of Life: How Digital Technology Is Bringing Us Closer to the Worlds of Animals and Plants, she talks about how AI is helping us to make an animal version of Google Translate.
All around the animal kingdom, there are sounds that we can hardly pick up and translate. Elephants, for example, talk with each other using infrasonic sound (次声波)—far below our human hearing range. Coral in the ocean also sends sound waves to attract baby coral to safer areas to grow. This is surprising as coral doesn’t have any ears! Scientists have placed listening equipment into these environments to pick up the sounds humans cannot hear.
After the sounds are recorded, AI can study their meanings, according to the news website Vox. For example, researchers used AI to translate bats’ 15, 000 calls. They found over 60 percent were arguments about 4 things: food, sleep positions, invasion (侵入) of personal space, and unwanted advances.
This technology can not only understand the animals but communicate back to them. For example, ▲ . In a study, scientists put its language AI system into a robot so that the robot could create a dance routine to tell other bees where the food was.
19.What is Karen Bakker’s new book mainly about?
A.How AI create an animal and plant kingdom.
B.Why AI is used to research plants and animals.
C.How AI helps understand animals’ languages.
D.Why AI makes a big difference to human beings.
20.What does coral use to communicate with each other according to Para. 3?
A.Sound waves. B.Infrasonic sound. C.Body languages. D.Special smells.
21.How does the author prove AI can know the meanings of the sounds in Para. 4?
A.By giving examples. B.By drawing mind maps.
C.By raising questions. D.By making comparisons.
22.Which can be the best to fill in the blank ▲ in the last paragraph?
A.bees are busy with their work B.bees are good at looking for food
C.bees like flying among flowers D.bees use dances to talk with others

My teachers discovered my paper-thin, worn-out clothes, my bad body smell, the countless hurts and burns, and why I hunted for food from dustbins. My second-grade teacher, Ms. Moss, asked the headmaster for help. The next morning, my mother, an alcoholic (酒鬼), and the headmaster had a private meeting. Then Ms. Moss lost her job and I never saw her again.
Things went worse. I lived in the downstairs garage, did all chores, but received almost no food. My mother even changed my name “David” into “it”, and punished my brothers if they gave me food, used my real name or even looked at me.
My only safe haven (港湾) was my teachers. They did their best to make me feel like a normal child. Sitting in the garage and shivering from the cold, I closed my eyes, pictured my teacher’s face and felt warm inside.
One Friday afternoon, I looked at my head teacher, Mr. Ziegler. I knew he felt my pain. I bowed my head in respect, somehow hoping for a wonder.
On March 5, 1973, my hopes were answered. Four teachers, the school nurse and the headmaster decided to ask the local govemment for help. Because of my condition, I was immediately placed into protective custody (监护). Before I left, they hugged me one by one. ▲ They reminded me of Ms. Moss. As a child called “it”, I felt I wasn’t worth their trouble.
One teacher gently whispered, “No matter the result, whatever happens to us, this is something we must do. As teachers…if we can influence one child’s life… This is the true meaning of our job.”
After a round of goodbyes, with tears running down my face, I promised I’d never forget them and do my best to make them proud someday.
On March 5, 1993, I returned to Thomas Edtison Elementary and presented my teachers with my first book, A Child Called “I”. I looked at them, tears running down their faces, and said, “As a child I learned that teachers have but one goal: to somehow make a difference in a child’s life. My four teachers, school nurse and headmaster risked their jobs to save the life of a child called ‘it’. I cannot, will not forget their courage and belief. Twenty years ago, I promised to my teachers. And tonight I renew (重申) my promise.”
27.In his childhood, the writer ________ at home.
A.felt warm in his heart B.lived a hard life
C.did much homework D.got on well with his mother
28.Which of the following can be put back in the “ ▲ ”?
A.I felt they were relaxed. B.They decided to give me up.
C.I knew they cared about me. D.They seemed to be surprised.
29.On the night of March 5, 1973, the writer promised to his teachers that he would ________.
A.be a good teacher at the school B.encourage children to read his book
C.make a difference in a child’s life D.make them proud of him
30.What can we learn about the writer from the passage?
A.Things went better after his mother and the headmaster had a private meeting.

C.His brother could easily help him when he was in need.
D.He achieved his promise twenty years later.

【原文】
There was once a club that only smart people could join. Many people wanted to join it, because they would be able to spend more time with other smart people. One night the club’s members were having a dinner party in a restaurant. They were talking quite a bit as they enjoyed their food. One of them thought that his salad tasted a bit boring, so he asked for a salt bottle to add some salt. However, it turned out to be sugar. The group found that the salt on the table was in the sugar bottle, while the sugar was in the salt bottle. The club members called for the waiter at once and told him about the problem. But there were no other bottles. How could the waiter solve the problem? The group suggested many ways to make it right. After a long discussion, the waiter simply looked at the bottles and said, “it’s easy.” He then took the labels of both bottles of and exchanged them with each other. The room quickly became silent. Sometimes we make problems more difficult to solve than they should be. It’s good to take a step back and see if there’s a simpler way first.

At the National Music Hall in Madrid, Wednesday’s performance of Handel’s Messiah was cut in by a mobile phone ringing in a row close to the stage.

A.By giving examples. B.By drawing mind maps.
C.By raising questions. D.By making comparisons.
22.Which can be the best to fill in the blank ▲ in the last paragraph?
A.bees are busy with their work B.bees are good at looking for food
