When we talk about plastic rubbish polluting the earth, we don’t often talk about the environmental impacts caused by fast-food packaging. Actually, this packaging is often coated with environmentally damaging chemicals. Recently researchers from Flinders University and German biomaterials developer, one·five, have started using seaweed (海草) to solve the packaging waste problem of the fast-food industry.
Using seaweed to create sustainable (可持续的) alternatives to existing products isn’t a new concept. The idea of turning seaweed into a material to replace bubble wrap (气泡膜包装) was put forward more than seven years ago. This time, the Flinders University materials researchers andone·five are using seaweed extracts (提取物) to develop next-generation coating materials.
In fact, these new non-pollutive biomaterials are designed to replace the traditional fossil-based plastic coatings that are used in most oil-proof fast-food packaging. The new coating not only meets the required functionality standards of traditional oil-proof packaging materials but also works to create an environmentally sustainable solution. It is as recyclable as paper, explains Dr Zhongfan Jia, a lead researcher from the Flinders Institute.
“The seaweed extracts have a similar structure to the natural fibres from which paper is made,” says Dr Jia.
“Our novel treatments boost the oil-proof feature of the seaweed through simple adaptation while neither affecting the biodegradability (生物降解力) nor recyclability of the coated paper.”
“The product could be great news for the environment. We are able to reduce harmful plastic pollution with it,” says Claire Gusko, co-founder of one· five.
Now Flinders University and one·five are trying mass production from the laboratory to the factory.
Although achievements like this are definitely worth celebrating, we can’t just stop at seaweed packaging. We need to use seaweed and other sustainable tools to effectively help reduce our environmental impacts and make real changes.
12. What’re researchers from Flinder University and one five doing?
A. Producing seaweed extracts. B. Solving the food waste problem.
C. Turning seaweed into bubble wrap. D. Using seaweed to develop new coating materials.
13. What is the traditional plastic coating like?
A. Cheap. B. Oil-proof. C. Recyclable. D. Sustainable.
14. What do we know about the seaweed extract coating?
A. It is a novel concept. B. It has been put on the market.
C. It is environmentally friendly. D. It is coated with damaging material.
15. Why does the author write the text?
A. To stop people from using plastic package.
B. To advertise for a new environmentally friendly product.
C. To introduce a replacement for traditional packaging material.
D. To warn readers of the environmental impacts caused by fast-food packaging.

Mia sat alone on the bus. Her older sister, Nina, was one seat ahead, acting as if this was the best day ever. But for Mia, it was the worst. It was the last day of swimming lessons. Test Day.
“If I pass my test, I can sign up for Junior Lifeguarding over the summer,” Mia heard Nina telling her friend Julia. “You’ re the best swimmer in the class, Nina,” Julia said. “There’s just no way you wouldn’t pass.” Mia angrily kicked the back of their seat with her foot. “I thought sisters were supposed to be there for each other,” she whispered.
An hour later, she held onto the edge of the pool, shivering (瑟瑟发抖). “For the last part of the test, you’ll all be swimming the width of the pool using the crawl stroke (自由泳),” the instructor, Michael, told the class. “Can we swim in the shallow end?” Mia asked. “Nope,” Michael said. “To pass Level 4, it has to be the deep end.” Mia was anxious. She didn’t know if she could swim all the way across without touching the bottom. “I’ll be watching from the other side,” Michael said. “Ready?” No! Mia thought. But Michael put the whistle to his lips and blew. Mia took a deep breath and pushed off. And Nina swam as light as the kickboard floating and passed the test very soon. But where was Mia?
After a minute, Nina spotted her sister crossing the pool. Mia was way behind the others, and Nina could see why. For one thing, she lifted her whole head out of the water to breathe, instead of turning it to the side. That was a waste of energy. Even worse, she wasn’t swimming straight.
When Mia stopped to check her position, her heart sank. Only halfway across! Some kids in her class were already at the wall, laughing and talking. Michael was bending over to talk to one of the kids. He didn’t see her. “Better keep going,” she thought. But she was tired.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

Nina kept her eyes on her sister’s slow progress. Stroke, stroke, breathe. Three-fourths of the way across, Mia stopped again. As Nina watched, Mia’ s head dipped briefly underwater before it resurfaced. Uh-oh, thought Nina. Her sister was in trouble, and she had to help. She kicked off the bottom and started towards Mia. Mia swallowed a mouthful of water and coughed. She felt as if she’ d been swimming for hours. If only someone would see she was too tired to keep going. She scanned the edge of the pool for Michael. This time, he saw her. His eyes narrowed.
Michael was about to jump in to help her when Mia felt strong arms holding her from behind. “Lie back,” her sister’s voice said. “I’ve got you.” Mia pulled the towel tight around her shoulders. “You know,” Nina said, “next time we go to the pool, I could give you some tips. I’ll teach you the right way to breathe so you don’t get so tired. With a little more practice, I know you can pass Level 4.” “You’ll make a good lifeguard someday,” Mia said. Nina smiled. “Really?” Mia nodded. “Yeah. And you’re already a good sister.”
