I started running half marathons (马拉松) when I was a teenager. I’m almost 70 now, so I’ve been doing them for 50 years.
I used to run around 15 races every year and when I was in my thirties, I got quite good at them. I think my personal best was around 1 hour 17minutes. It was only ten minutes over the world record back then. These days I run about five races a year and my time is quite a little longer. At my age, I need more warm-ups, but it’s well worth all the work.
Why do I still run half marathons? Firstly, I’m keeping myself fit. My doctor told me that I was healthier than most people half my age! But the real reason why I love the sport so much is the people I meet. I get to know other players and I’ve made many good friends over the years.
I now spend quite a lot of time visiting schools to get children interested in sports, especially running. The kids always ask me many questions. Many of them can’t believe that I’m the same age as their grandfathers. Sometimes I invite them to run a five-kilometer race with me, but not many of them can beat me!

As the soccer season went on, we finally finished second in the city. Our team was a very good team, and I was a big part of that. Kenny was the captain(队长), but I was the player who scored the most goals in the team. Kenny would always pass the ball to all his players.

I was shocked. After the event, the teacher came up to me and explained. He said, “You were the best player on the team, but you did not pass the ball. You were out there for yourself but not for the team. You have to know that soccer is about the team, not about one individual player.” I was embarrassed(窘迫的) by what the teacher said.

In eastern Africa, a volcano (火山) rises more than 19,000 feet into the sky. It’s Mount Kilimanjaro, one of the world’s tallest mountains. Every year, thousands of people try to climb to the top. Fewer than half succeed.
Montannah Kenney of Texas was one of the few who succeeded. She climbed the mountain with her mom last year, when she was just 7! She was one of the youngest climbers ever to get to the top. “It felt great to reach my goal (实现目标),” Montannah said.
Her adventure began about two years ago. Montannah found out her mom was planning to climb Kilimanjaro. She asked to go too. “I wanted to see what it was like above the clouds,” she said.
The Kenneys knew it was important to be prepared. They practiced climbing on hills near their home. And they did a study. They found that they had to be ready for all kinds of weather. The bottom of Kilimanjaro is warm, but the top is snowy and cold. The Kenneys also learned that climbers can get altitude sickness (高原反应), because of climbing very high too quickly. So they planned a route that would help them go slow.
Montannah and her mom started in March, 2018. Guides showed them the way. On the six-day climb, they climbed for nine hours or more each day. And it rained or snowed almost the whole time.
One day, Montannah felt sick to her stomach (恶心). She and her mom worried it might be altitude sickness. They thought about turning back. But after resting for a bit, Montannah felt better.
