On most occasions, when we encounter failure,we tend to shift the blame onto others for what
has gone wrong, rather than engage in self-reflection on the reasons for our shortcomings and the
lessons we can get from the experience. Our fear of failure casts a long shadow over many aspects of
our lives.
When it comes to students'learning, this fear can be particularly harmful. The fear of being
considered as failures discourages hard work and causes problems to be swept under the rug when
they could have been addressed at an early stage. Moreover,it stops students from keeping an open
mind and accepting new ideas.
Amy Edmondson, the author of The Science of Failing Well, has spent over thirty years
studying failure. She challenges the conventional belief that all failure is bad for us,and introduces
the concept of "intelligent failure".It is an unwanted result, not the one we hoped for or perhaps
even anticipated. However,it occurs in new fields where our knowledge about achieving the desired
outcome is limited.
An intelligent failure occurs in the pursuit of a goal.Rather than a waste of resources,it is a

thoughtful attempt. These types of failure are the ones we should rain ourselves to welcome because
they lead to progress. For instance, the failures in the early altempts at open-heart surgery(
)laid the groundwork for the successes we see in this field today.Nowadays, doctors can
skillfully open a patient's body, repair his heart and lengthen his life.To progress from the initial
attempts to the life-saving miracles we witness daily, doctors had to suffer failures, and
unfortunately, some patients even lost their lives.Nevertheless, the point is that doctors never
operated on a patient who had better treatment choices.
The intelligent failure is about ensuring that the failure is no larger than necessary to obtain the
new knowledge it offers. And the risk of failure is kept as slim as possible.
28.What is the common reaction when people face failure?
A.They accept it calmly.
B.They find fault with others.

30.What can we learn about an intelligent failure?
A.It is a result of thoughtful arrangements.
B.It is a careless mistake with little value.
C.It is an avoidable mistake in routine tasks.
D.It is an outcome that comes from experimentation.
31.What does the text mainly talk about?

As the fashion industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, making
clothing materials from waste potato plants provides a more sustainable()alternative to
pure cotton(棉花).
Potatoes are a headache for farmers. While the stems()are dug up and consumed, the
above-ground part of the plant contains harmful chemicals and is unfit for animal feed.Typically,
farmers have to break it up or burn it before digging up the potatoes, either of which pollutes the
environment and leads to waste. But now,UK start-up Fibe aims to prevent this by taking out fibers
(from potato plants to create a sustainable material. It has presented the world's first piece
of potato cloth,a mixture of 75%cotton and 25%potato fibers.
This initiative began as a project by a group of design engineering students at Imperial College
London.Given the task of coming up with a sustainable business concept, the group explored using
waste plants to find a more eco-friendly alternative to cotton. They selected potato plants. As
potatoes are the world's third most important food crop, about 150 million tons of waste plant
matter is generated every year.
What truly sets potato fibers apart is their environmental friendliness. As the land is already
used to plant potatoes, using potato plants for fibers means a 99.7%reduction in water requirements
compared to traditional methods.Additionally, they give off only 18%of the carbon emissions that
would usually be associated with other fiber sources, effectively cutting carbon emissions by 82%.
And most importantly,no additional land is needed for this fiber production.
Muhammad Tausif at the University of Leeds,UK,notes that the industry's demand for
sustainable fibers is on the rise. However,Fibe needs to demonstrate that its potato fibers have the
"length,fineness,and strength"to compete with cotton.Cost is also a decisive factor.Fibe's co-
founder,Idan Gal-Shohet,says,"Fibe cloth will initially be pricier than cotton due to limited
production, but the price will drop once production expands.By then, fibers from potato plants will
enjoy higher market share.

Walking in a quiet forest or any other natural place, being around nature often makes many of
us feel happy and peaceful.36 One of them is about wood:Is wood a mineral(矿物质)?
The simple answer is no.37 Minerals form through natural earth processes, while wood
comes from living things, especially trees.Even though they might be used in some similar ways,
their beginnings are very different.
38 The cells are mostly made of a thing called cellulose, along with lignin and other
organic stuff.Different from minerals, which form through earth processes, wood grows when trees
take in water and nutrients from the soil and turn them into the strong material we use for many
things.
Even though wood isn't a mineral, minerals are really important for trees to grow and develop.
Trees take in minerals from the soil through their roots and use them to build and keep their shape.
39 They help with things like photosynthesis(光合作用)and cell growth.
An important thing about wood is that it can be renewed.Unlike minerals, which are limited and
can be used up over time, wood can be cut from forests and grow back through good forest management.
If we manage it well,we can keep getting the good things from wood for a long time.40
Knowing the difference between wood and minerals helps us understand the different materials
around us and why it's important to use resources in a way that doesn't waste them. So,the next
time someone asks "Is wood a mineral?",you'll know the answer!
A.Wood is made of fibers and cells that grow in trees.
B.They are necessary for trees to be healthy and grow.
C.But for science lovers, questions about nature might come up.
D.But minerals have to be dug out from the earth's limited supplies.
E.Wood is relatively soft and flexible, especially when compared to minerals.
F.Minerals, like those in rocks and soil, come from a different place from wood.
G.Another well-known mineral is diamond, which forms under extreme pressure and temperatures.

Zafar didn't care much about what his parents advised him to do.He did whatever he liked.
His parents were constantly worried about his ill-mannered behaviors. They tried to change him for
the better,but always failed.
One day,Zafar went out to play with his neighborhood friends. It was raining heavily.
Lightning flashed across the sky,but the children played joyfully in the rain. The sky was darkened
by thick clouds, and it was getting even darker as evening approached.Their concemed parents
had wamed the kids to go back home before nightfall.
As evening came along, the other kids left for home, but Zafar stayed behind in the playground,
continuing to play. One of his friends reminded him that it was dangerous to stay out late,
especially when there was no one around. But Zafar just did not take the advice seriously.Instead,
he chose to stay and play by himself.
The playground was in a secluded area, rarely visited by anyone, especially after dark, and it
was close to the forest, which was home to many dangerous animals. The rain was pouring so
heavily that it was hard to have a clear sight of anything.Zafar had never believed the stories about
animal attacks. He was simply too careless, despite knowing that there were dangerous animals
hiding in the forest, waiting for their prey().
Suddenly,Zafar heard a loud cracking sound coming from the forest.A chilling sensation(
washed over him,and he felt as if someone was watching him.
“Something bad is about to happen,"he thought. He was on high alert(警惕),ready to run.
He wondered if it was a cheetah, lion or wolf.He knew he couldn't run faster than any of them.
He had to find another way to save himself. He looked deeper into the forest where the noise had
come from. But his eyes caught two shining lights in the darkness.
