Step 1 Warming-up
Ask Ss the following questions:
1. If you want to connect your favorite star, what can you do to make it?
2. How many people does it take to get connected with a random person in the world?
3. Can you believe that you can be connected with any person around the world?
Step 2 Pre-reading
1. Watch a video and find out what the theory is.
2. Make a prediction about the text based on the picture on the book and the title.
Step 3 While-reading
General understanding:
Skim through the text and find the following information:
<1> What’s the main idea?---Six Degrees of Separation and its development.
<2>How many parts can be divided?---3
<3>What is each part mainly about?---introduction;development;conclusion
<4>What’s genre of this article?---expository writing
Detailed understanding:
Read the text carefully and find out some specific information.
<1> What does the theory mean?
<2> Who invented the theory and when it was invented?
<3> What’s the development of the theory? Fill in the form.
<4> Which kinds of writing techniques are used in this article? What’s the purpose of them?
Step 4 Post-reading
1.Draw a mind-map and explain this theory to your classmates.
2.Discuss in groups about the limitation and application of the Six Degrees of separation.
Summary
Ask Ss to make a summary about what they have learned in this class to check their outcome.
Homework
1.Make a summary about the text with no more than 200 words.
2.Search more about the application and influence of the theory through internet.
3.Carry out a research and find out how many people it takes to get connected to your favorite star.
