In 10 years’ time, 80% of what you do today will not turn into anything useful, so why do it? Spend your time on what is the most important. Forget the rest. 35 If you can do something (like a household chore, or reply to an e-mail) in two minutes, don’t put it off. Do it now and save three minutes. 36 Don’t think that you have to finish a big job all in one sitting. If you do that, you might never start it. Instead, work on it bit by bit, five minutes at a time. 37 How do you find time to learn something new or start a new project? Think about all the little “pockets” of time that you have. Every day we have time to kill while we ride on public transport or wait in lines. Other people play games on their phones, but you could be studying a new language. If you have spare minute, use it! 38 Always in a rush when you get up? Try brushing your teeth in the shower or eating breakfast while you get dressed. If you do two or more things at once, you’ll be ready for work in no time at all. A.Big job? Cut it up! B.Too much to do? Decide what’s important! C.Small job? Do it at once! In some rare (稀少的) cases it might be right to follow the crowd, but in most cases this can be a big mistake. Actually there are reasons why we shouldn’t follow the crowd blindly. According to a study, people often follow the crowd when they aren’t sure about the direction they should take. This means a large number of people could be following others without understanding what’s right and what’s wrong! This makes more people follow and as a result most people move in a certain direction even if it isn’t right. A man who wants to be successful always hopes for others’ guidance (指引) and he usually follows the same path of most people, but the question this man never asks himself is: are all of those people successful? Of course not! If you want to follow a crowd, then follow a successful one. However, in real life you’ll only find one successful person among hundreds of people, and that’s why following the crowd makes no sense at all. Most people act emotionally without thinking wisely. If you always follow others because they’re greater than you in number, then sooner or later you’ll discover that you’re taking emotional (情绪化的) decisions you might regret (后悔) later. However, should we never follow the crowd? No! I’m not trying to say you should never follow the crowd, but instead I’m just asking you to think wisely before you take a decision. If you find others are right, there is no problem in following them, but if you have doubts about the direction they’re moving in, don’t follow them blindly. 44.Why do people follow the crowd blindly? A.Because it’s always right to do so. B.Because they feel it safe to do so. C.Because they can be successful by doing so. 45.What opinion does the writer hold? A.It is wrong to follow other people. B.You shouldn’t be sorry for what you have done. C.You should use your brain before following others. 46.What might you do if you follow others only because they are greater in number? A.Regret. B.Be successful. C.Think wisely. 47.Which statement is NOT true? A.In most cases, following others blindly can’t be right. B.In real life, you can find one successful person easily. C.Some people follow others because they feel it safe to follow many people. 48.Which of the following best shows the structure of the text? 根据“Most people follow others blindly just under the influence of peer (同龄人) pressure or because they feel it safe to follow a large number of people.” 根据“I’m just asking you to think wisely before you take a decision. If you find others are right, there is no problem in following them, but if you have doubts about the direction they’re moving in, don’t follow them blindly. ”可知,作者认为跟随大众前应该明智地思考。故选C。 46.细节理解题。根据“If you always follow others because they’re greater than you in number, then sooner or later you’ll discover that you’re taking emotional (情绪化的) decisions you might regret (后悔) later.” 故选A。 47. 根据“in real life you’ll only find one successful person among hundreds of people,”可知,在现实生活中,你只能在数百人中找到一个成功的人,这表明成功的人并不容易找到,与选项B的说法相反。故选B。 48. “The only constant (不变) in life is change,” Heraclitus said in about 500 B.C. That could be more true today. We live in a world that is changing every minute. 49 We get plenty of information every day. Francis Bacon said, “Knowledge is power.” In fact, there is more information in a newspaper than he would have experienced in his whole life. 50 That’s because our brains want to protect us. After all, who knows what new dangers might appear? However, change is also the only way of development. Nobody can stop it in life. Luckily, our brains become stronger when meeting the unknown. 51 To be more imaginative and creative, you should look for and find environments you have no experience with. You can learn how to face the changes in daily life. You can try a new restaurant. 52 Small changes can help you gradually get used to uncertainty (不确定). So when bigger things happen, you’ll be more fully prepared for them. People who fear change often stick to a certain lifestyle. 53 But change comes whether you ask for it or not. If you can move from just accepting it to actively finding it out and dealing with it, you will be successful. A.Why are we afraid of change? B.What can you do to face the changes? C.They believe they can control the future by doing so. D.Technology is out of date almost by the time we buy it. E.You can also go to a concert you normally wouldn’t attend. F.Dealing with the unexpected needs imagination and creativity. 49.根据前文“We live in a world that is changing every minute.”及后文“We get plenty of information every day.” 50.根据后文“That’s because our brains want to protect us.” 故选A。 51.根据前文“Luckily, our brains become stronger when meeting the unknown.”和后文“To be more imaginative and creative...” 52.根据前文“You can try a new restaurant.”及后文“Small changes can help you gradually get used to uncertainty (不确定).” 53.根据前文“People who fear change often stick to a certain lifestyle.” Shi Guangyin is a farmer and eco-warrior (生态战士) from Dingbian, Shaanxi Province, China. Born in 1952, he grew up in a small town near the Mu Us Desert, where sandstorms often destroyed crops, houses, and even people’s lives. The local weather condition is terrible, and so is life for the locals. Growing up in such an environment, Shi knows how much pain and harm the sand can cause. As a child, Shi experienced the pain of losing his home because of sandstorms. At the age of 8, he lost his best friend in a sandstorm, which made him decide to fight against desertification (沙漠化). Fighting against the desert is not an easy job. In 1968, Shi started leading local people to plant trees in the desert. After years of hard work, he succeeded in finding ways to grow trees in the sand. In 1984, he sold 84 sheep and borrowed money to plant trees on 200 hectares (公顷) of land. Although he had many difficulties, including failures in the harsh (艰苦) area of Langwosha, Shi never stopped fighting. In 1988, he finally succeeded in greening Langwosha by using new planting technology. Shi was old. His son, Shi Zhanjun, continued planting trees but sadly died in a car accident while transporting trees. Shi’s grandson, Shi Jianyang, then took up the responsibility. Together, they have turned 23, 334 hectares of desert into green land. Shi believes that fighting against desertification is his lifelong duty. He says, “I shall not stop planting trees until my last breath.” His story shows how one person’s will can make a big difference in protecting nature and living in harmony (和谐) with the environment. 54.Where is Shi Guangyin from? 55.Why did Shi Guangyin decide to fight against desertification? 56.How did Shi Guangyin succeed in greening Langwosha? 57.Who took up the responsibility to plant trees after Shi’s son died? 58.What can we learn from Shi’s story? 54.Shi Guangyin is from Dingbian, Shaanxi Province, China. 55.Because he experienced the pain of losing his home and a friend in sandstorms. 56.By using new planting technology. 57.Shi’s grandson, Shi Jianyang. 58.We can learn that one person’s will can make a big difference in protecting nature and living in harmony with the environment. One such mountain I faced was losing a speech competition I had prepared for months. To begin with, I was upset. However, it wasn’t the end. To succeed in the next competition, I had a heart-to-heart talk with my parents. They encouraged me not to give up and helped me figure out the problems. I realized I hadn’t practiced enough and lacked confidence. Then I took action. I made a study plan and practiced English with my classmates daily. I also asked my English teacher for advice and extra materials. Finally, I built up great confidence and succeeded. This experience taught me valuable lessons. One the one hand, failure is not the end but an opportunity to learn and grow. One the other hand, I learned the importance of planning ahead, working hard, and asking for help. In 10 years’ time, 80% of what you do today will not turn into anything useful, so why do it? Spend your time on what is the most important. Forget the rest. 35 If you can do something (like a household chore, or reply to an e-mail) in two minutes, don’t put it off. You will have to do it sooner or later, but planning to do it, remembering to do it, and finally doing it in the future will take five minutes or more. D.Want to save time in the morning? Do different things at the same time! E.Want extra time? Use what you have! A. B. C. (D) “The only constant (不变) in life is change,” Heraclitus said in about 500 B.C. Shi Guangyin is a farmer and eco-warrior (生态战士) from Dingbian, Shaanxi Province, China. There is a park near my home. Now, I face challenges with a positive attitude, knowing every challenge or failure is a stepping stone to success.
