The phrase “southern spuds” becomes popular, thanks to Harbin, a city in Northeastern China that has taken the Internet by storm.
Over 3 million tourists poured into Harbin during the three-day New Year holiday. And many of them came from southern China where snow was nowhere to be found. Harbin locals gave these visitors a cute nickname “nanfang xiaotudou” or “southern spuds”. It is because southern people are usually shorter and they look like small potatoes when wearing thick jackets and hats. To Harbin people, this name is not to make fun of southerners, but to create a sense of warmth with humor (幽默).
Harbin tried everything to meet tourists’ needs, especially those from the south. Cooks carefully cut the local frozen pear into small pieces. Symphony (交响乐) concerts find their way into shopping malls. A drone (无人机) lifts a man-made moon for tourists to take photos. Harbin really went all out to make them happy.
However, even though they did all these to please the southern tourists, this nickname “southern spuds” sparked a debate (辩论) on the Internet. While Harbin locals use the name to show warmth and goodwill, some sightseers feel that calling them “small potatoes” is making fun of their height (身高).
Even though people from the Northeast are sincere and warm, we have to admit (承认) that there is regional stereotype (地区刻板印象) in some parts of China. Nowadays, people travel all the time. Therefore, it’s important to make the world a more welcoming place. After all, everyone likes kindness and dislikes discrimination (歧视), whether (不论) it’s on purpose or not.
26.According to the second paragraph, why do Harbin people call southerners “southern spuds”?
A.Because southerners like to eat small potatoes.
B.Because southerners sell small potatoes in Harbin.
C.Because southerners look like spuds in thick jackets and hats.
D.Because Harbin locals want to make fun of southerners’ height.
27.What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.Southern travelers were very happy with Harbin tourism.
B.Harbin tried their best to attract tourists and make them happy.
C.Harbin cooks made some nice food for southern tourists.
D.Food, shopping malls, and the man-made moon attracted many tourists.
28.Why did some visitors dislike the nickname “small spuds”?
A.Because they did not like to debate on the Internet.
B.Because they were not pleased with Harbin tourism.
C.Because they felt that Harbin locals thought they were short.
D.Because they believed that they did not look like small potatoes.
29.According to the last paragraph, how should we treat people from different places?
A.We should be kind and welcoming. B.We should not discriminate them on purpose.
C.We should do everything to make them happy. D.We should treat them according to their stereotypes.
30.What does the author think of the nickname “southern spuds”?
A.He think it’s funny. B.He thinks it’s unfair.
C.He thinks it’s welcoming. D.He doesn’t express his own opinion.

Cultural experts say Shanxi is home to the largest number of ancient buildings in China. Xuankong Temple at Hengshan Mountiin in Hunyuan County is no doubt one of the most wonderful examples of such a saying.
Made of wood, tiles and stones during the mid-Northern Wei Dynasty, the temple is made up of two three-story pavilions and a yard linked by staircases and steps. The staircases and steps are lined along the surface of a sheer cliff rising 50 meters above a stream at the foot of the mountain.
Seen from below, Xuankong Temple, which literally means “temple hanging in the sky”, appears terribly dangerous. It is supported only by a few thin stanchions (支柱) standing on protruding (伸出) rocks. For that reason, it was selected by Time magazine as one of the 10 most dangerous buildings in the world in 2010.
Sun Shupeng, an engineer, however, disagreed with the idea that Xuankong Temple is, in fact, a dangerous structure. “The temple has been standing firmly on the Hengshan cliff for more than 1,500 years and is still kept intact and solid” he said. “A study of the temple is an exploration of an ancient Chinese engineering miracle.”
Sun said the stanchions were only added recently as a psychological comfort to visitors. About twenty thick square beams (梁) support most of the building’s weight. A number of large, deep holes were dug into the cliff’s surface, and two-thirds of the length of the beams together with wedges (楔子) were driven into each one.
In addition to its strong building, local people have found that the section of cliff above the temple acts like an umbrella to protect the temple from rain and sunlight. In summer, when the daytime is the longest, the temple only receives about two hours of direct sunlight a day during the morning.
The narrow valley it faces also changes the direction of airflow. The wind usually blows toward the cliff facing the temple, but rarely reaches the temple.
31.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
①The temple is at the top of the mountain. ② There is a river at the foot of the mountain. ③The temple is made of wood, tiles and stones. ④The temple is made up of two yards and a pavilion.
A.①② B.②③ C.③④ D.①④
32.Why does the temple look terribly dangerous ?
A.Because it is badly broken.
B.Because it was built 1,500 years ago.
C.Because it is 50 meters high above a stream.
D.Because it seems to be supported only by a few thin stanchions.
33.What does the underlined word “intact” in Paragraph 4 mean ?
A.完好无损的 B.摇摇欲坠的 C.恢宏强大的 D.屹立不倒的
34.What is the purpose of writing Paragraph 5?
A.To advertise the value of the building.
B.To show the safety of Xuankong Temple.
C.To explain how Xuankong Temple was built.
D.To tell the purpose of building Xuankong Temple.
35.What is the best title for the passage ?

B.An Ancient Building with Three Stories
C.Xuankong Temple: a Popular Tourist Attraction
D.Xuankong Temple: a Wonder of Ancient Times

JIUQUAN SATELLITE LAUNCH CENTER, China sends off its youngest-ever team for its space station on Thursday. It is part of the country’s plan to put astronauts on the moon before 2030.
The China Manned Space Agency said the average (平均的) age of the three-member team is the youngest since the launch of the space station. Their average age is 38, state media China Daily said. The three astronauts are Tang Hongbo, Tang Shengjie and Jiang Xinlin. They will replace a team that has been on the station for six months. The new team will perform experiments in space medicine, space technology and other areas during their stay. And they will help to place and do possible repairs to equipment (设备) inside and outside the station.
In 2022, the Chinese government built its own space station after it was not permitted to join the US led International Space Station. The Americans worried that the Chinese space program was under the control of the People’s Liberation Army.
China’s first manned space mission (任务) in 2003 made it the third country after the former Soviet Union and the US to put a person into space using its own resources. This is an important step in exploring space, which makes all Chinese people proud.
Although the American space program is believed to be far ahead of China at this time, China has made some important steps. They include bringing back samples (样本) from the moon’s surface for the first time and landing a vehicle (运载工具) on the less explored far side of the moon. The US, meanwhile, aims to put astronauts back on the moon’s surface by the end of 2025.
Beyond their moon exploration programs, the two countries have achieved significant milestones in space exploration by independently (独立地) landing vehicles on the surface of Mars. China now plans to follow the US in landing a spacecraft on an asteroid (小行星). It shows China’s determination to become a leader in this competitive field. All Chinese people are full of expectations for the future development of exploring the universe.
36.When does China plan to put astronauts on the moon?
A.Before 2030. B.Before 2025. C.Before 2040. D.Before 2050.
37.What can we learn about the three astronauts?
A.They stayed at the station for six months.
B.They will do experiments in different areas.
C.They are the youngest astronauts at the age of 38.
D.They will use the equipment to repair the station.
38.Why did China build its own space station?
A.Because China was controlled by the American space program.
B.Because China wanted to challenge the US in space exploration.
C.Because China wanted to have control over American space program.
D.Because China was not allowed to join the International Space Station.
39.Which is the main idea of Paragraph 5?
A.China lands a vehicle on the far side of the moon.
B.China brings back samples from the moon’s surface.
C.China has taken important steps in space exploration.
D.China will put astronauts on the moon’s surface before 2030.
40.What have both the US and China achieved in their space programs?
A.They landed vehicles on Mars independently.
B.They built a joint International Space Station.
C.They landed a spacecraft on an asteroid.
D.They launched their first manned space missions.

Many people love to listen to music while driving. Thanks to the musical roads around the world, drivers now don’t need to turn the radio on. 41
A musical road can create music when a car’s tires go over grooves (凹槽) on the road. To produce beautiful music, drivers must pass over the grooves at a certain speed. Signs often tell drivers the right speed.
42 Since the mid-1990, musical roads have appeared in many different countries. 43 To warn drivers to the incoming music, all the roads are marked by colored musical notes that are painted on these roads. Drivers can decide whether to go over the grooves or not because they are set on the side of the road.
In Hungary, there is a musical road in honor of one of the country’s most popular musical performers — Laszlo Bodi. Bodi was the lead singer for the band. 44 Sadly, Bodi passed away in 2013. But people still remember him as there’s a road where drivers can hear 30 seconds of the song “Road 67”.
45 In Indonesia, a road plays the first six notes of “Happy Birthday”. The fifth note is a little out of tune, though. This “mistake” keeps drivers awake, and it has reduced the number of traffic accidents. Such is the power of music and musical roads.
A.Musical roads help ensure the safety of drivers as well.
B.But they can also enjoy music while taking road trips.
C.Musical roads can help improve driving skills greatly.
D.The first musical road was created in Gylling, Denmark, in 1995.
E.We are able to enjoy music by turning on the radio on the road.
F.For example, in China, there are many musical roads throughout the country.
G.Formed in 1990, the group is one of Hungary’s biggest acts and is still active today.

My family tradition
It’s an honor to talk about my family tradition. I can clearly remember the bright Saturday afternoon ten years ago, when I knocked over a neighbor’s flowerpot by accident. Out of fear, I rushed home at once and poured the whole thing to my parents. They praised me for my honesty and encouraged me to take responsibility for my fault bravely. Much touched, I went to apologize to my neighbor sincerely. Surprisingly, instead of blaming me, he gave me a thumbs-up for my honesty. It was at that moment that I realized the power the family tradition.
Actually, honesty and responsibility have been running in our family. My family tradition has shaped me into a better version of myself and will lead me further.
Thanks for listening.
