Some dogs have so many toys that it can be difficult for their owners to remember them all. So it might surprise you to know that, according to a new research, some of our four-legged friends have the ability to remember the names of their toys, especially the well-loved ones, even those they haven’t seen for a long time.
The new study involved five dogs that had taken part in research two years before. The dogs were taught the names of 12 toys. After one month, researchers tested them to see if they could remember the names, and the dogs could. The owners then hid the toys for two years.
In the new study, each owner put the hidden toys on the floor alongside other toys. The owners said the names of the hidden toys and asked the dogs to fetch them. On average, the dogs made correct toy choices 44%. Some of the dogs had a success rate of up to 60%. If the dogs had been totally unable to recognise the names of their toys, they’d have been expected to make the correct choices 20.4% just by chance.
Researcher Shany Dror said the study showed the dogs were storing the names of their toys in their long-term memory. The research team highlighted not all dogs can learn the names of objects, and the reason why some can and others can’t isn’t clear. “Dogs who could learn the names of objects often had owners that spent a lot of time with them. The more you invest (投入) in your dog, the more you will get back from the relationship,” Dror said.
32. How long were the toys hidden in the study?
A. Two months. B. Two years. C. One month. D. One year.
33. How did the author show the results in paragraph 3?
A. By listing numbers. B. By telling stories.
C. By showing reasons. D. By giving examples.
34. What can be inferred from Dror’s words?
A. You will get back more than you invest.
B. You should invest more money in your dog.
C. Better abilities to remember come from more company.
D. Better relationship with your dogs is based on more toys.
35. Which is a suitable title for this text?

Labor is an essential part of our lives, which enables us to create value, improve ourselves, and make the world a better place.
One of my most memorable labor experiences was a community volunteer activity. Our task was to clean up and beautify a local park. With brooms and garbage bags, we started to work. I carefully picked up litter and swept away fallen leaves. Drops of sweat kept rolling down my face, but I didn’t give up. I was tired but felt a strong sense of achievement in the end.

Tom was in high school for half a year, yet he still didn’t adapt to the new school life. He was unwilling to communicate with others. In class, he often felt lonely among his classmates, always lost in his own thoughts. As a result, he became increasingly unhappy and his academic performance began to get worse.
Mr Smith, the headteacher, noticed his unhappiness. One Friday afternoon, the teacher approached him and said, “Tom, I’ve noticed that you’ve been a bit down lately. Is there anything wrong? Are you willing to share your feelings with me?” Hesitating for a moment, Tom sighed and said, “I just can’t fit in here. I miss my parents and old friends so much, and it seems that I have little in common with the classmates here.” They chatted for a long time that afternoon.
The next Monday, it was time for the class to change seats as usual and the headteacher asked Jack, an outgoing and helpful boy, to sit next to Tom. Jack said cheerfully, “I’d like to make friends with you.” Tom was amazed by Jack’s friendly offer, but soon felt a wave of warmth flowing through his heart. In 2024, China held 671 marathons and road races, showing the growing popularity of these events. The number reflects the nation’s increasing enthusiasm for running and the desire for a healthy lifestyle.
Marathons come in various types. The full marathon, with a distance of 42.195 kilometers, challenges even the most seasoned runners who have taken part for many times, testing their endurance (耐力) and willpower to the limit. It suits highly trained athletes who have spent months, even years, preparing their bodies and minds. The half marathon, 21.0975 kilometers long, is easier to reach. It attracts those with a good running base who want a big challenge but not the full marathon distance. It allows runners to experience the excitement of long-distance running without the extreme physical and mental demands. The quarter marathon, with a distance of about 10.54875 kilometers, is suitable for those who have been regularly running and have participated in shorter races.
Road races, on the other hand, are running competitions held on paved roads. They can include shorter distances like 5 kilometers or 10 kilometers. These shorter road races are ideal for beginners or those who want a fun, less intense running experience. They also offer a great way for people to get fit and stay active, as they are less demanding in terms of training and preparation.
These events promote not only physical health but also a spirit of perseverance (毅力) and determination among participants. They bring people together, encouraging a sense of community and teamwork. Runners from all walks of life come together to support and cheer each other on, creating a positive and inspiring atmosphere.

Jack immediately started a lively conversation, sharing his favorite hobbies and interesting experiences. Tom, who had been so lonely before, gradually found himself responding and opening up.
