Almost half a billion children are growing up in parts of the world where there are much more extremely hot days every year compared with the past, a UN analysis has found. It also found children in west and central Africa had the highest exposure (暴露) to extremely hot days. “This analysis shows a warning about the serious impact of extremely hot days on children,” said David Knaute, UNICEF’s climate expert. “It urgently calls on governments to take the opportunity to act and get temperature rises under control.”
Exposure to extreme heat can do harm to children. It has been linked to children’s lack of nutrition (营养), and it makes children tend to get infected with diseases that spread in high temperatures. Children were “uniquely vulnerable (脆弱的)” in extreme-heat, said Knaute. “Unlike adults. their bodies hear up faster, and they cool down more slowly. “When their small bodies are not able to balance the heat, it leads to heat stress, and they are more likely to suffer from heatstroke or die.”
Besides effects on children’s body, extreme heat also influenced education. Shruti Agarwal, a senior adviser on climate change at the charity Save the Children, said, “As the number of hot days increases, we’re going to see children’s learning performance being affected.” “There could also be indirect risks to children’s health if extreme heat led to crop failures or food price increase, therefore causing children to lack nutrition, ” she added.
To lessen the impact on children, UNICEF recommends that countries take climate action that ensures children to live in a clean and healthy environment by way of reducing emissions (排放) and fulfilling climate change agreements. “There is still hope for the future, but we must act now. Later is too late,” said Knaute.

In a world full of connections, we need a variety of ways to deal with the pressures so that we sense that we are able to control our life. Otherwise we may feel overloaded, and feel like we can never catch up. As far as I'm concerned, one of the best ways is by seeking and enjoying solitude (独处).
Solitude is often misunderstood as loneliness. Loneliness is a negative state, marked by a sense of isolation (孤立). One feels that something is missing. It is possible to be with people and still feel lonely — the most bitter form of loneliness. Solitude is the state of being alone without feeling lonely. It is a positive and constructive state of understanding oneself deeply. Solitude is desirable, a state of being alone where you provide yourself with wonderful and enough company. Solitude is something you choose, while loneliness is imposed on you by others.
Solitude provides the necessary space for self-reflection, which is important for personal growth. Without distractions (使人分心的事), individuals can reflect upon their goals, values, and actions. Moreover, solitude helps individuals develop emotional adaptability and independence. When people spend time alone, they learn to rely on their own thoughts and decisions rather than constantly seeking help and advice from others. This encourages self-confidence and a deeper understanding of their inner selves. Solitude can also improve productivity and creativity. Free from the interruptions (打扰) of modern life, individuals often find themselves more focused and creative.
Some argue that too much solitude may lead to social withdrawal (不合群) or a lack of social skills. While this is a reasonable concern, intentional solitude differs from isolation. Keeping a balance between solitude and social interaction ensures individuals grow both personally and socially.
9. How is paragraph 2 mainly developed?
A. By describing a process. B. By giving examples.
C. By making a comparison. D. By presenting general rules.
10. What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 2 mean?
A. is forced upon B. is explained to C. is designed for D. is promised to
11. What can solitude affect us according to the text?
A. It can bring us a sense of loneliness. B. It enables us to rely more on others.
C. It can cause a lack of creativity in us. D. It enables us to reflect on ourselves.
12. What is the text mainly about?
A. The forms of solitude. B. The benefits of solitude.
C. The problems of solitude. D. The principles of solitude.

C

11. What can solitude affect us according to the text?

C. It can cause a lack of creativity in us. D. It enables us to reflect on ourselves.
12. What is the text mainly about?
A. The forms of solitude. B. The benefits of solitude.
C. The problems of solitude. D. The principles of solitude.
C 10. A 11. D 12. B
根据文章第二段“Solitude is often misunderstood as loneliness. Loneliness is a negative state, marked by a sense of isolation (孤立). One feels that something is missing. It is possible to be with people and still feel lonely—perhaps the most bitter form of loneliness. Solitude is the state of being alone without feeling lonely. It is a positive and constructive state of understanding oneself deeply. Solitude is desirable, a state of being alone where you provide yourself with wonderful and enough company. Solitude is something you choose. While loneliness is imposed on you by others.
接着说“while loneliness is imposed on you by others”,而“while”表示对比,说明孤独与独处不同,结合“by others(被他人)”,可以推断出孤独是被他人施加的。 故选A。
根据文章第三段“Solitude provides the necessary space for self-reflection, which is important for personal growth.(独处为自我反思提供了必要的空间,这对个人成长至关重要。)”
根据文章第一段“Otherwise we may feel overloaded, and feel like we can never catch up. As far as I'm concerned, one of the best ways is by seeking and enjoying solitude (独处) .(否则,我们可能会感到不堪重负,觉得永远都无法跟上节奏。在我看来,最佳方式之一就是寻求并享受独处。)”、第二段“It is a positive and constructive state of understanding oneself deeply. Solitude is desirable, a state of being alone where you provide yourself with wonderful and enough company.(它是一种积极且富有建设性的状态,能让人深刻地了解自己。独处是令人向往的,在这种独自一人的状态下,你能给自己提供美妙且充足的陪伴。)”、第三段“Solitude provides the necessary space for self-reflection, which is important for personal growth.(独处为自我反思提供了必要的空间,这对个人成长至关重要。)”

根据上文“Plastic pollution is one of the biggest threats to marine (海洋的) life.(塑料污染是对海洋生物最大的威胁之一)”可知上文提到了塑料污染是对海洋生物最大的威胁,可推理出接下来要阐述塑料污染对海洋生物造成威胁的具体情况,C项“Animals often mistake plastics for food, leading to their injury or death(动物经常把塑料错当成食物,导致它们受伤或死亡)”解释了这种威胁的具体表现,符合语境,故选C项。
根据上文“Choose sustainable (可持续的) seafood.(选择可持续的海鲜)”以及下文“By choosing seafood recognized by organizations like the Marine Stewardship Council or plant - based seafood, individuals can support responsible fishing practices and help prevent the decrease of marine populations.( 通过选择由诸如海洋管理委员会这类组织认可的海鲜或植物性海鲜,个人可以支持负责任的捕鱼做法,并有助于防止海洋生物数量的减少)”可知,通过选择可持续的海鲜,个人可以支持负责任的捕鱼做法,帮助防止海洋生物数量减少。这说明过度捕捞和有害的捕鱼做法对海洋生物构成了威胁,D项“Overfishing and harmful fishing practices are major threats to sea animals(过度捕捞和有害的捕鱼做法是对海洋动物的主要威胁)”表达的含义符合语境,故选D项。
根据下文“Donations or volunteering with organizations focused on ocean conservation improves the effect of protection work. Taking part in local clean - up activities, like beach or river clean - ups, also helps protect marine habitats from pollution.(向专注于海洋保护的组织捐赠或做志愿者可以提高保护工作的效果。参加当地的清理活动,如海滩或河流清理,也有助于保护海洋栖息地免受污染)”可知,本段主要说的的是支持海洋保护的各种方式,B项“Support marine protection(支持海洋保护)”表达的含义符合语境,故选B项。
