Each year at Girl Scout summer camp, I, as a kid, expected most was the closing campfire, a few hours of silliness that marked our final evening together. All week, my teammates and I had been addicted to our skit (滑稽短剧) performance, editing lines and practicing scenes.
Skits and songs are deeply rooted in the camp experience. The days might be all about sports or nature, but nighttime entertainment is a kid’s dream. Similar to a talent show, some performances are educational but mostly, they just make you laugh. Talent is irrelevant, and audience engagement through call and response is essential.
In the camp, social rule disappears and space for self-exploration forms. Shy kids come out of their shells, and cool kids let their hair down. They get to open up this door to a part of themselves that they wouldn’t have felt safe to show at school or at home.
It’s a decade ago when I performed as a camp member, and I never thought of skits from a skill-building view. But I now realize this rich camp tradition has left a great impression on me. Through camp skits, I developed my sense of humor, built confidence in front of a crowd, and learned how to accept others for their quirks (怪癖).
Maybe we can make our schools or communities more like summer. camps by bringing the silliness of skits into our families and classrooms to reconnect with ourselves and each other. The next time you’re sitting around a campfire with friends and family, give it a try. Embrace the discomfort and invite your loved ones to join in the improvising (即兴创作). And remember, “The more funny noises and childlike humor, the better.”
4. What can we know about skit performances from Paragraph 1 and 2?
A. They are to educate the audience.
B. They are to show students’ talent and skills.
C. They are to make students compete with each other.
D. They are mainly to entertain and engage the audience.
5. Which word has the similar meaning to the underlined phrase “let their hair down”?
A. Relax. B. Defend. C. Ignore. D. Refuse.
6. What can be learned about the author from Paragraph 4?
A. She learned a variety of skit skills in the camp.
B. She understood social rules better in the camp.
C. She became broad-minded because of camp skits.
D. She developed a competitive spirit through camp skits.
7. What does the author advise us to do at last?
A. To gain more childlike humor. B. Try to step out of the comfort zone.
C. To accept everyone’s imperfection. D. To participate in more competitions.
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. C 7. B

China is betting on its successful hybrid rice varieties to fight food shortage in Africa.
“We’re no longer suffering from hunger,” said 55-year-old Georges Ranaivomanana, a Madagascan farmer who took the lead in planting Chinese hybrid rice in his town of Mahitsy. Georges told Xinhua that he hoped that all Madagascan farmers would use the seeds to raise their living standards.
China has been helping African countries develop productive rice farming for years with its hybrid rice. For farmers on the continent like Ranaivomanana, they are “very grateful” to the Chinese as the hybrid rice is the key to better food security and higher incomes.
In May, the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Centre opened a research centre in Madagascar to select hybrid rice varieties based on the island nation’s diverse ecological environment, in an effort to find more productive crops for a continent long troubled by insufficient grain output.
In the northwestern Nigerian state of Kebbi, Chinese expert Wang Xuemin stood in a rice field, surrounded by green rice plants. “This year, we are using a new technology,” he said, adding that “it can significantly reduce labor and other costs.” “The land, climate and rice farming methods in Nigeria are very different from those in China. We had a lot of problems at the beginning,” said the 51-year-old who has already been in Nigeria for 16 years.
In 2006, after Wang and his colleagues had sown the seeds, their field management techniques and large-scale farming equipment could not adapt to the operating environment, and hundreds of hectares of rice fields were almost completely taken over by weeds. “At that time, we came to realize that blindly copying the Chinese model was not feasible (可行的). It was necessary to constantly innovate our techniques to fit the local situation in Africa,” Wang said.
After more than ten years of research and innovation, the Nigerian farm now becomes a major training and mechanized production centre in the country, training more than 1,000 farmers and agricultural machinery management staff.
8. What’s African farmers’ attitude towards Chinese hybrid rice?
A Skeptical. B. Uncaring. C. Appreciative. D. Disappointed.
9. When did Wang Xuemin come to Nigeria?
A. At the age of 35. B. At the age of 51.
C. At the age of 55. D. At the age of 67.
10. What do Wang Xuemin’s words imply?
A. Chinese technology of hybrid rice can’t be applied in Africa.
B. Different technologies should be applied to different areas.
C. Chinese experts contribute to raising African living standards.
D. Chinese technology of hybrid rice wastes more labor and costs.
11. Which is the proper title for this passage?
A. Why China’s Hybrid Rice Is Suitable for Africa
B. The Sowing of Hybrid Rice Varies from Climate
C. How Africans Develop Food Import
D. China’s Hybrid Rice Sows Hope for Africa
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. D

About 900 miles off the coast of Chile, scientists have discovered an underwater mountain home to primitive ecosystems that they believe host at least 20 previously unknown species.
The team mapped a 1.9-mile tall seamount, which is part of the Nazca Ridge (NR), an underwater mountain range in the southeast Pacific Ocean. The potentially new species that have yet to be officially confirmed include a sea urchin, starfish and a squat lobster. The findings will be submitted to the Ocean Census, which promotes the discovery of new sea species for the confirmation. The team also documented rare sightings of the delightfully named Casper octopus and recorded a live squid, a creature that had only previously been studied from a few dead samples.
The discoveries are the result of a 28-day expedition (考察) to the understudied NR, led by Schmidt Ocean Institute. Before this mission, the height and the exact location of the mountain range weren’t known, researchers said. New technology allowed researchers to study the complex depth with greater accuracy than previously possible. Researchers used a remotely operated vehicle named Su Bastian to gather images to map the sea floor.
Only 26% of the seafloor has been mapped with such high resolution, said Schmidt Ocean Institute’s director Jyotika Virmani. Through the map, each expedition “let us have a better understanding of the unknown seabed and made us focus more on the lives on our home planet,” she said. The Institute’s two prior expeditions to the NR and the neighboring Salasy Gómez Ridge (SyGR), in January and February, 2024, led to the discovery of 150 new species.
Both mountain ranges are in the high seas and lie outside of any country. They’ re being threatened since there are the effects of climate change, plastic pollution, overfishing and potential deep-sea mining. We hope the region containing the NR and the SyGR is a candidate to become a sea protected area that could protect sea life from activities such as commercial fishing or oil drilling. We hope the data gathered from these expeditions will help inform future policies, safeguarding these undeveloped environments for future generations.
12. What will the team do for the potentially new species?
A. Find a sea floor for them. B. Help do species identification.
C. Return them to the NR. D. Document them for dead samples.
13. What can be inferred about the NR?
A. It had been well-studied before the expedition.
B. Researchers had known its rare species before.
C. Researchers touched its every corner in person.
D. New technology helped explore it fruitfully.
14. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about the NR and the SyGR?
A. Their ecosystems are a great concern.
B. They both became sea protected areas.
C. They are free from deep-sea mining activities.
D. Their locations promote commercial fishing.
15. In which column of a magazine can we probably read this passage?
A. Tourism and culture. B. Sports and Fitness.
C. Nature and Biodiversity. D. History and Traditions.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. C
【解析】

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
There was a lively young boy named Jimmy who had a bit of an anger problem. He got angry very easily. Whenever something didn’t go his way, Jimmy would shout, stamp his feet, and say some mean words to people.
For example, one day at school, Jimmy’s classmate accidentally knocked over his lunch tray (托盘). Jimmy yelled at his classmate, ignoring the tray that had fallen to the floor, and stomped (迈着重重的步子走) angrily to the corner of the canteen. Another time, his little brother borrowed one of his favorite books without asking. When Jimmy found out, he screamed at his brother, seized the book back, and threw it across the room, which made his brother cry.
Such behavior worried his parents, who wanted to help Jimmy learn to control his temper (脾气). One night, they sat him down and handed him a special notebook and a set of colorful pens. “Jimmy,” his mother said, “every time you feel angry, I want you to write about it in this notebook. Write down what happened, how you felt, and what you did.” Jimmy thought this was a strange request. He looked at the notebook and pens. “Writing about my anger?” he thought. But he agreed.
The next day, when Jimmy was at school, his friend accidentally bumped (撞) into him, causing him to drop his books. Jimmy felt the familiar increase of anger rising inside him. He was just about to shout when he remembered the notebook in his backpack. He took it out, sat down, and began to write. He wrote about the bump, how it made him feel, and what he wanted to do. By the time he finished writing, he felt much calmer.
This continued every day. At first, his notebook filled up quickly with annoying incidents. But as the days passed, the notebook saw fewer and fewer intense stories. Jimmy found that writing down his feelings helped him to control his temper. By the end of the month, Jimmy noticed he was writing in his notebook less and less.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One day, Jimmy realized he hadn’t written anything in the notebook all week and told it to his parents. They smiled warmly, proud of the progress he had made. His father said, “That’s great, Jimmy! It means you’re learning to manage your anger.” Jimmy felt a sense of accomplishment, realizing how much he had grown. “Dear Jimmy, since you have no anger to write, why not write something positive in your notebook?” his mother said.
Jimmy was surprised to be asked to write something positive in his notebook. “Why?” he asked curiously. “Because,” his mother explained, “it’s important to celebrate the good times too. Write about things that make you happy or proud of yourself. It’ll help you focus on the positive aspects of life.” Jimmy nodded, understanding the wisdom in her words. From then on, his notebook became a place where he recorded both his struggles and his victories, helping him navigate through life with a balanced perspective.

C Researchers touched its every corner in person.

At first his notebook filled up quickly with annoying incidents. But as the days passed, the notebook saw fewer and fewer intense stories. Jimmy found that writing down his feelings helped him to control his temper. By the end of the month, Jimmy noticed he was writing in his notebook less and less.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day, Jimmy realized he hadn’t written anything in the notebook all week and told it to his parents.
