Between balancing professional obligations with personal responsibilities and getting through the everyday tasks that keep you alive, your brain can get more than a little overwhelmed. Thankfully, it has a strategy to stay afloat: relying on heuristics (启发式).
Heuristics are those little mental shortcuts that all of us use to solve problems and make quick, efficient judgment calls. They help cut down on your decisionmaking time and help you move from one task to the other without having to stop too long to plan your next step. __1__, they can also lead to trouble causing us to miss important facts or develop unfair biases. Here are two of the big ones:
The Availability Heuristic
题组五
This heuristic comes into play any time you make a judgment about something based on your memories of related instances or available information that's specific to that scenario. If you're pressed for time and have to make a quick decision, it may help you quickly arrive at a conclusion. __2__. For example, when asked about the probability of plane crashes, homicides and shark attacks, people tend to overestimate the odds of each just because these events are so memorable—that's this heuristic at play. __3__. If all you see in your feed is pictures of people partying in Ibiza, you're likely to assume you're the only one not having the time of your life. But that may not be true—you're just jumping to that conclusion based on the evidence that's available.
题组五
__4__
When you categorize objects based on how similar they are to existing prototypes (样机), you're applying such kind of heuristic. For example, if you assume a potential dating app suitor (求婚者) would make a better accountant than a CEO because he describes himself as “quiet”, you're using the representative heuristic. If you presume another guy is more likely a massage therapist than a software engineer because he says he's into essential oils and yoga, __5__.
题组五
A.The Authority Heuristic
B.The Representative Heuristic
C.In other cases, it can lead you away from the facts
D.It may also be responsible for social media's negative effect on your mood
E.While heuristics are essential for freeing up your limited cognitive resources
F.you're probably not seeing as many boring photo ops from other people's couches
G.you're making that assumption because those qualities sound more representative of the former than the latter

The Debate on Drinking Coffee on an Empty Stomach
There's a popular belief that drinking coffee on an empty stomach can damage the stomach lining (胃黏膜). This article investigates the validity of these claims and explores the broader influences for gut (肠道) health.
__1__ But some worry this habit could harm their stomachs. Claims on social media suggest that such a practice could lead to various illnesses. However, Kim Barrett, a physiology professor, assures that the stomach is strong, equipped with protective mechanisms like a thick liquid layer that protects it from potential irritants such as coffee.
题组五
While substances like alcohol are known to alter the stomach's defenses, research, a 2013 study of over 8,000 participants living in Japan, shows no substantial link between coffee consumption and the development of ulcers (溃疡). __2__
The idea that coffee induces stomach acid production is wellestablished, which could theoretically lead to heartburn, especially if consumed on an empty stomach. __3__ A 2014 review found no connection between coffee and heartburn, whereas a 2020 study indicated a possible increase in heartburn symptoms among habitual coffee drinkers.
题组五
If you experience discomfort after drinking coffee, consider cutting down the consumption. __4__ That means you drink less coffee in a way. For those who tolerate it well, there's no need to alter your routine.

Sometimes giving feedback can be stressful. After all, you want your words to be helpful and constructive, but you also don't want to make anyone feel bad. It's normal to be nervous about how the other person will respond to your comments. A negative reaction might hurt your relationship and make it harder for you to communicate in the future. __1__. Here are some basic tips on giving feedback.
__2__
题组六
It's essential to give feedback in a timely manner. Don't wait until too long after a project is finished or a performance has been given to provide your comments, or it might make your feedback less meaningful. Delivering it too soon can also create problems. Most importantly, ensure that the recipient knows they are going to get feedback.
Take a balanced approach
__3__. If you only focus on constructive feedback, the other person is much more likely to walk away feeling pretty terrible about themselves. Instead, try providing some comments on ways people can improve and grow, but balance it by delivering recognition and acknowledgment of what they've done well.
题组六
Focus on actions, not personality traits (特征)
Feedback should focus on a person's specific behaviors and actions, not on their character. When people think outcomes are caused by personal characteristics that can't be changed, feedback is less likely to result in change. __4__.
Look for ways to encourage selfreflection
Feedback shouldn't just be a list of pluses and minuses. Deliver it in a way that encourages people to reflect on how they are doing, what they've done well and ways that they might be able to improve. How do you do this? __5__. When noting things that might need improving, you might ask, “What are some things you might do differently next time?”
题组六
A.Choose the right time
B.Inform the other person before you give feedback
C.Getting the other person involved is a great way to start
