Long John Silver and another pirate (海盗) were outside the fort (堡垒) holding a white flag.
“Who goes there?” asked Captain Smollett.
“Captain Silver,” answered Long John Silver. “I’ve come to make an agreement.”
“Captain Silver?” said the captain. “Who’s he?”
“When you deserted the ship, I became the captain, sir,” replied Silver.
“I am willing to come to an agreement. Can I come in?” Silver asked. But Captain Smollett refused.
“It’s a cold morning to sit outside on the sand,” said Silver.
“An honest man can sit on his ship. It’s your choice. You are either my ship’s cook and an honest sailor or Captain Silver, a mutineer (反叛者) and a pirate. Well, what do you have to say?”
“We are going to find the treasure,” said Silver. “So, give us the map. Here are our conditions: you can either join us when we find the treasure and we’ll leave you in a safe place on the journey home. Or you can stay here, with half the ship’s supplies (补给), and I’ll tell the first ship we see where you are.”
“Is that all?” asked the captain.
“If you refuse our conditions,” replied Silver, “then we will fight you to the end.”
“No,” said Captain Smollett. “We can’t accept your conditions. Now, listen. Here are my conditions: you and your pirates must come to the fort, one by one and unarmed (缴械). You become my prisoners and I will let you have a fair trial (审判) in England. If you don’t accept this, then I’ll kill you all. You can’t find the treasure. You can’t sail a ship. You can’t fight— Gray here escaped from five of you on the ship. These are my last words. I’ll kill you the next time I meet you. Now, get out.” Silver looked at the captain angrily.
“I will break your wooden fort to pieces within an hour,” he shouted. And he stumbled (蹒跚而行) down the hill, and disappeared into the woods.
“They are going to attack,” said the captain, coming back in. “We’re outnumbered (寡不敌众), but we have the protection of the fort.” The captain then gave his orders.
“Doctor, take the door, but do not let them see you. Hunter, take the east side, Joyce, the west. Mr. Trelawney, you’re the best shot— you and Gray take this north side with the five gun holes. Shoot when you see anyone. Hawkins, you and I will load the guns and help where we’re needed.” The pirates climbed inside the fence. The squire and Gray fired again and again; three men fell, two were dead, and the third ran back to the woods.
After shooting for a while, we rushed outside and fought them in the open with our swords. We killed more of them. The rest of the pirates ran away. When the fighting was over, we went back inside. The numbers were now reduced from seven of us against nineteen pirates to four against nine.

With a pair of glasses and gentle manner, Siew Te Wong could be described as a Malaysian Clark Kent (a fictional character in Superman). This wildlife biologist is like a Superman—a tireless protector of the world’s smallest bear species: the sun bear.
“I often call the sun bear a forgotten species,” Wong said. “When I first started, 20 years ago, no one had ever studied sun bears. Most people did not know that they even existed,” As he studied the animal and realized the danger it faced from deforestation and illegal (不合法的) hunting, he knew the bears were in serious trouble. “The more I learn about them, the more I care. The more I care, the more I worry,” he said. “I have to help them.” Today, Wong’s workplace, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center is the only sun bear sanctuary (保护区) in the world.
Sun bears are found in the rain forests of South Asia, and the small bears play a big role in keeping these woodlands healthy. Many plants and animals depend on them to spread seeds, create nesting sites and control the termite (白蚁) population. Healthy rainforests provide clean air and water to the entire world.
But the sun bear population has dropped by 30% during the last thirty years. Now, 44 sun bears live at Wong’s center. All of them were made lose parents by illegal hunting or saved from captivity (囚禁). The center has also become one of the leading tourism (旅游业) destinations in the area. “They can see how special the sun bear is and learn about how their survival (生存) is important to ours,” Wong said, “so they can take some action when they go back home.”
For Wong, this work is simply his responsibility. “Sun bears have become part of my family. When they’re endangered, I care for them. When they are in trouble, I speak for them,” he said. “I want to be the voice for the sun bear, to fight for the sun bear, to ensure the survival of the sun bear. But my goal is to save the entire forest ecosystem (生态系统) and that is so important to the survival of humans. I want bears to live in the forest and not in captivity.”
62.What was the situation as Wong first started to study sun bears?
A.They were paid little attention. B.They were a great danger to humans.
C.They were well fed by the local people. D.They were truly regarded as valuable animals.
63.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

On May 29, 1953, mountaineers Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay set foot on the top of Mount Qomolangma, the world’s highest mountain. They were the first ever to reach its 8,848-meter top, marking a big moment in history. So how did they do it?
In a 1974 interview, Hillary talked about the climb. He said that to do a climb like this, being skilled and experienced in climbing is not enough. You also need to have enthusiasm (热忱). “The really good mountaineers that I know never lose that sense of enthusiasm,” he said.
And then there was the team. Helping Hillary and Norgay to the top were no less than 700 people, said Hillary. Some of them were helping to carry supplies (物资)into the area. It might be easier these days, with better transportation and technology, but back then, a lot of the work needed to be done by people. “It is a team job …The two men who reach the top are completely dependent on the whole team,” he said.
Even though Hillary had a good team and all he needed, he wasn’t sure if they would reach the top. Because of the height, anything can happen, and it can happen really fast. “On a mountain like this… you can never be completely confident,” he said.
Hillary and Norgay’s amazing achievement shows the importance of enthusiasm and teamwork. It has encouraged many others to try to climb the mountain since.

Have you ever imagined being able to communicate with your pet at home and let them understand everything you say? It sounds too good to be true, but scientists have started using artificial intelligence (AI) to help communicate with animals.
AI allows humans to use technology to watch and understand the sounds and signals (信号) animals use so we can try to speak back to them.
Professor Karen Bakker said that AI is already helping humans communicate with bats (蝙蝠) and bees. This could change what we know about nature and our non-human relationships.
Bakker said AI helped decode (解码) recordings of animals talking to one another. She said trying to communicate in their language could be better than to teach them to use human sign language.
Bakker explained how scientist Yossi Yoyel had used recordings and AI to understand bats. “Bats argue over food; they communicate differently between genders (性别) ; they have their names or ‘signature calls’,” she said. “But unlike human mothers who raise their voices when talking to babies, mother bats lower the voice.” A computer can be trained to listen like a bat, but this can never be done with the human ear.
With bees, the computer both listens and watches the bees’ body movement to understand what they are communicating. “When bees ‘speak’ to one another, they use body movements, as well as the sounds, to communicate,” Bakker said. She said scientists now know how bees say things such as “hush (be quiet)” or “stop”.
Scientist Tim Landgraf even created a robot bee that entered a hive (蜂巢) and it was able to communicate to other bees when it wanted them to stop doing something or fly.
So, are you looking forward to communicating with animals one day?
70.Why does the writer mention bats and bees?
A.To give a direction of the future study.

A.The importance of healthy rain forests.
B.An introduction to the rain forests of South Asia.
C.A peaceful living situation of animals in rain forests.

64.Why does Wong build his sun bear center as a leading tourism place?
A.To make this center richer.

B.To show the achievements scientists have got.
C.To doubt the findings scientist have reported.
D.To change people’s opinions about the two animals.
71.What is the fifth paragraph mainly about?
A.Scientists’ ways of communicating with bats.
B.Differences between bats and humans in communication.
C.Scientists’ findings about communication between bats through AI.
D.Advantages of communicating with animals in their language.
72.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Bees mostly use sound to communicate with others.
B.Scientists have already understood a bit of bees’ language.
C.Bees’ body movements are very difficult to understand.

A.The importance of healthy rain forests.
B.An introduction to the rain forests of South Asia.
C.A peaceful living situation of animals in rain forests.
D.Sun bears play a role in keeping a balance of rain forests.
64.Why does Wong build his sun bear center as a leading tourism place?
A.To make this center richer.
B.To protect the forest in the center.
C.To make the center less endangered.
D.To raise attention about sun bears through the center.

Our favorite book-reading ways
We did a survey on the topic of “Our favorite book-reading ways”. Here are the results. According to the survey results, reading on the phones is the most popular way, accounting for 51% of the total. Listening to an e-book takes up 18%, while reading on the Internet is 21%. Surprisingly, only 10% of students prefer reading a physical book.
For me, my favorite reading way is reading physical books. I think that there’s nothing like the feeling of turning pages and smelling the ink. It’s more relaxing and helps me focus better. To help middle school students read better, I have two suggestions. First, we should find a quiet place to read without any distractions. Second, we should set aside some time every day for reading, even if it’s just for a short period. By doing so, we can improve our reading skills and broaden our horizons.
