Shanya Gill is a 13-year-old girl from California, US. In April, 2024, she got a special invitation to visit the US Fire Administration’s Office with her father. There, they had a talk about fire control. They were invited because Gill made a new fire detector (探测器), which made her win the top prize in an international competition the year before they talk.
It all started with a big fire. When Gill was in Grade 6, the restaurant behind her house burned down. No one died, but the accident made Gill and her family feel afraid. “The restaurant had smoke detectors, but still, the restaurant could not be saved,” Gill said. “I came to realize that smoke detectors simply are not good enough and decided to make a better fire detector.”
She studied programming and made a system that can detect warm things with 98% accuracy (准确率). It detects hot ones with 97% accuracy and sends warnings to people. This is better than traditional smoke detectors which only have about 82% to 94% accuracy. Gill now hopes to share her invention with the world. She doesn’t want to patent (申请专利) it because she hopes everyone can use it. She wants it to save as many lives and buildings as possible. In fact, Gill is creating a website to share the system with the public.
“She’s offering a new solution to the world, which is an improved solution over what’s out there today,” said Mike Dugas, the director of research and development at Thermo Fisher Scientific.

What do you do with your old clothes? You might throw them away, sell them or give them to people in need. No matter which way you choose, it’s always you who have to decide what to do. However, California decided to push clothing companies to take care of the old clothes. As a result, the state passed the first US clothing recycling law (法律) on Sept 28, 2024.
This new law is expected to make less pollution. In 2021, about 1.2 million tons of old clothes were thrown away in California. While 95% are reusable or recyclable, only 15% are actually recycled.
The law said that companies making clothes have to set up a program to reuse, repair and recycle their goods. What’s more, they would have to pay for the costs of the whole program.
More than 150 groups including environmental groups and some stores like Ikea, agree with the law. It would do good to the environment. It could also create over 1,000 new green jobs, reported The Guardian.
As a main polluter, the fashion industry (时尚产业) causes nearly 10% of the world’s carbon emissions (碳排放), according to the United Nations. Other countries like France and the Netherlands also have laws on clothing recycling programs. In France, for example, there are 47,000 recycling centers.
50. What does the numbers in Paragraph 2 show?
A. The problem of clothes waste is serious. B. Companies are worried about the law.
C. The new law has had a great influence. D. Too many clothes are produced each year.
51. What do the companies have to do according to the law?
A. Reduce the number of products. B. Sell their goods at a low price.
C. Set up a new environmental group. D. Pay for the clothing recycling program.
52. What’s the best title for the text?
A. How to Reuse and Recycle Old Clothes at Home
B. The Rise of Green Jobs Because of the New Law
C. Fashion Industry Becomes Important in California
D. New Law Pushes Companies to Reduce Fashion Waste

More than 150 groups, including environmental groups and some stores like Ikea, agree with the law.
