On May 29, 1953, mountaineers Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay set foot on the top of Mount Qomolangma, the world’s highest mountain. They were the first ever to reach its 8,848-meter top, marking a big moment in history. So how did they do it?
In a 1974 interview, Hillary talked about the climb. He said that to do a climb like this, being skilled and experienced in climbing is not enough. You also need to have enthusiasm (热忱). “The really good mountaineers that I know never lose that sense of enthusiasm,” he said.
And then there was the team. Helping Hillary and Norgay to the top were no less than 700 people, said Hillary. Some of them were helping to carry supplies (物资)into the area. It might be easier these days, with better transportation and technology, but back then, a lot of the work needed to be done by people. “It is a team job …The two men who reach the top are completely dependent on the whole team,” he said.
Even though Hillary had a good team and all he needed, he wasn’t sure if they would reach the top. Because of the height, anything can happen, and it can happen really fast. “On a mountain like this… you can never be completely confident,” he said.

Did you know that a seed (种子) can have its own “ID card”? The “card” shows that the seed is at China’s seed bank in Beijing. Let’s go on a trip with a seed to see how it gets its “ID card”.
A seed’s journey to the seed bank starts with a census (普查). China’s latest census of agricultural (农业的) seeds started in March, 2021 and ended in January, 2024, reported CCTV news. Workers collected more than 139,000 new seeds from all over the country. They then arrived at the seed bank.
When seeds first come in, they each get a number for their “physical examination”. For example, workers put all kinds of Jobs tears (薏苡) from different farms together. Then they put them into groups according to the seeds’ look or taste.
Next, workers check the seeds to make sure they’re healthy and all the unhealthy ones are given up. A worker at the seed bank showed CCTV news a seed that had a large insect inside it. “A seed like this should not be saved,” he said.
With the bad seeds gone, researchers then test the good ones to see how likely they are to grow. The seed bank has a quick, smart way of doing this: Workers test the seeds and use the information they get to predict their growth. Workers dry and weigh the best seeds after several tests. Then, they’re kept in a super cold freezer at -18℃.
China’s seed bank keeps all the seed information safe and helps people learn about them. This can help develop new plants that can grow better and deal well with hard environments, ensuring (确保) the food security (安全) of the country.

Xu Jian is a visually impaired (视力受损的)woman in Shenzhen, Guangdong. For the past 7 years, Xu’s guide dog Daimeng has been at her side at work and for daily activities.
Guide dogs means a lot to visually impaired people. Every year on the last Wednesday of April, we celebrate International Guide Dog Day. This year, it is on April 30.
Xu got the dog from the China Guide Dog Training Center in Dalian, Liaoning Province, the first guide dog training center on the Chinese mainland. Wang Jingyu, a professor at Dalian Medical University, set it up in 2006. In fact, the training for the first guide dogs at the center started in 2004. Over the years, the center has trained about 400 guide dogs, with more than 350 now serving in 27 provinces and cities across China.
According to Wang Xin, a trainer who has worked at the center since 2010,90 percent of the center’s guide dogs are Labradors (拉布拉多猎犬), which are really kind and smart.
Once trainers find good guide dog puppies (幼犬), the puppies need to take personality tests. A good guide dog should not be too curious, excitable, or shy as these personalities could cause problems during work, according to Wang.
One volunteer, Ms Sun, has raised four puppies since 2019. “Raising guide dogs is quite different from raising pet dogs.” said Ms Sun. She strictly follows the center’s guidelines (指导方针)for their care, including controlled feeding and teaching the dogs to refuse food when necessary. She also guides them along blind tracks (盲道)made for visually impaired people.
However, even if the dogs successfully pass all tests, they could still be turned down if they don’t enjoy the role of a guide dog, Wang added.
Usually, guide dogs serve for 6 to 10 years. Those who are turned down or are too old are usually taken in as pets by their trainers, those who raised them, or volunteers.

13. The first guide dog training center on the Chinese mainland was set up in ________.
A. 2004 B. 2006 C. 2010 D. 2019
