I, like many of them, volunteer some of my time in order to give back just a little of what I am so blessed to have. I volunteered to go to Guatemala with an eyeglass team from International Relief Teams — an organization I have supported in other ways for many years. Our team went to a small town in Guatemala, San Augustin. We set up our tables and packages of pre-made glasses in the dirty courtyard of a clinic, put up the Snellen chart (an eye chart) on a wall, and began our work. Young and old people came from many of the surrounding towns. Most had never received an eye exam before. They waited for hours patiently in the sun, never complaining. If we could help them out, their thankfulness for a simple pair of glasses was overwhelming. Some only left with eye drops or sunglasses, and even these people expressed their gratitude sincerely. All of them were very generous with blessings and smiles. We heard over and over from people who knew their eyes needed help but they had not gone to a doctor because it was too expensive, or had not got the glasses they needed for the same reason. It’s so easy to overlook how much difference the volunteers’ small actions can make to the lives of people in Guatemala. The glasses in my country are so easily available, but to people in Guatemala, they are not. As those who could give them a hand, we watched their lives change. What a gift sight is — and what a difference being able to see clearly makes! Here, we’d like you to join us and take action to help people in need. And every day, those actions change lives. No action is too small; no action is ever wasted. 4. According to Paragraph 1, the author is probably ________. A. a major host of good deeds B. a sponsor of an eyeglass team C a generous neighbor in his community D. a supporter of International Relief Teams 5. What do we know about the volunteers in the eyeglass team? A. Their working environment is simple. B. They are medical experts nationwide. C. Their initial preparation is inadequate. D. They have served people in Guatemala for years. 6. Which of the following words can be used to describe most people in Guatemala? A. Kind and helpful. B. Poor but grateful. C. Considerate and patient. D. Knowledgeable but unhealthy. 7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To urge people to protect their eyes. B. To ask people to volunteer in Guatemala. C. To call on people to do good deeds in daily life. D. To show the difficult life of people in Guatemala. 4. D 5. A 6. B 7. OpenAI’s GPT-3, for example, is a language generator that’s been trained on 570 GB of text, and is able to write convincing essays. Google, of course, is working on language generators too, and its latest one helps you write like a legendary poet. Google’s new AI tool, Verse by Verse, allows users to compose a poem using “suggestions” from classic American poets. The AI generates these suggestions based on what it’s collected from reading the poets’ oeuvres. That is, the program uses machine-learning algorithms (算法) to identify the language patterns of a particular poet’s work, then applies those to text it generates as the suggestions. The tool works by allowing users to select from 22 American poets for the suggestions, including legends like Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, and Edgar Allen Poe. After a user has selected up to three poets, they then pick the type of poem they’d like to write. The program offers various poetic forms, and even allows users to select the number of syllables per line. Users then give the program a first line, and AI generates the rest of the poem. The AI makes suggestions line by line, however, making it more interactive than other top language generator s out there. As far as results, they’re interesting, but not nearly as impressive as GPT-3’s writings. According to Google engineer Dave Uthus, “The system was trained to have a general understanding of what lines of verse would best follow a previous line of verse. So even if you write on topics not commonly seen in classic poetry, the system will try its best to make lines that are relevant. The widely varying degrees of Verse by Verse output quality show that while good lyrical gems (宝石) may occasionally emerge, further work by the AI team remains to be done.” 8. What is the purpose of the first paragraph? A. To introduce a new AI tool for writing poetry. B. To compare different language-generating tools. C. To discuss the progress of langauge-generators. D. To analyze the latest essays of OpenAI’s GPT-3. 9. What does the underlined word “oeuvres” mean in paragraph 2? A. Suggestions. B. Works. C. Messages. D. Patterns. 10. What can the Verse by Verse tool do? A. Collect poems for inspiration. B. Give the program a starting line. C. Generate different poetic forms. D. Compose poems as good as GPT-3. 11. What is Dave Uthus’s attitude to the capability of Verse by Verse tool? A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Puzzled. D. Confident. A 9. B 10. C 11. 根据第一段“Google, of course, is working on language generators too, and its latest one helps you write like a legendary poet(当然,谷歌也在开发语言生成器,其最新的一个功能是帮助你像传奇诗人一样写作)”可知,首段的功能是引出文章话题——写诗的人工智能工具,故选A。 根据第二段“The AI generates these suggestions based on what it’s collected from reading the poets’…(这个AI根据它从阅读诗人……中收集的信息来生成这些建议)”可知,人工智能根据从阅读诗人的作品中收集的信息生成这些建议,故选B。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“The program offers various poetic forms, and even allows users to select the number of syllables per line.( 这个程序提供了多种诗歌形式,甚至允许用户选择每行的音节数)”可知,该程序提供多种诗歌形式,甚至允许用户选择每行的音节数,故选C。 根据文章最后一段“while good lyrical gems may occasionally emerge, further work by the AI team remains to be done.(虽然好的抒情诗歌偶尔会出现,但人工智能团队的进一步工作仍有待完成)”,可知虽然好的抒情诗歌偶尔会出现,但人工智能团队的进一步工作仍有待完成,可推理出Dave Uthus的态度是客观的,故选B。 D In the USA, growing senior citizens are adopting technology, but most need help using new electronic devices such as smart phones. That puts seniors at risk for social isolation (孤立), which may lead to poor health and even earlier death. It is also associated with nearly $7 billion in additional annual spending by Medicare. That’s where a startup company named Teeniors comes in, making matching tech-savvy (精通技术的) young people with seniors its mission. Teeniors coaches them on using smartphones, computers and tablets. Founder Trish Lopez got the idea in 2015 after realizing what troubled her aging mother. “She’ d lose a password, she’d lose a document and then she didn’t know some simple commands,” Lopez said. Patience and listening are some of the fundamental skills young people learn as Teeniors, and the program has served more than 3,000 seniors in New Mexico. The mission, Lopez said, is to empower senior citizens. Dorcey, a retired teacher from Lesotho, Africa, when her husband died suddenly, was left alone, too ashamed to admit she didn’t know how to answer her new phone. She tried to get help at stores, but clerks didn’t understand why she was confused. “They said ‘Oh, a child’ — I hate that phrase — ‘a child could do this’,” Dorcey said. Dorcey found a Teenior instead, who helped her download WhatsApp. Now she talks to family and friends regularly in Africa and Europe for free. Tess Reynolds, 17, is the Teenior who helped Dorcey, saying she can relate to seniors who may need more time to learn because she has a learning disability and people used to push her to finish her schoolwork more quickly. “So I know how it feels to be rushed,” Reynolds said. “I want to make sure that doesn’t happen.” The experience of working for Teeniors has also convinced Reynolds that she wants to become a senior home health assistant. Trish Lopez never anticipated how Teeniors would affect the young people she employs. It’s not just teaching them tech skills, but also soft skills employers need such as emotional intelligence, problem-solving and communication. Their feedback has surprised her. 12. What is a problem American senior citizens face now in their life? A. They fall behind in using technology. B. They suffer greatly from poor health. C. They rely heavily on electronic devices. D. They pay high price for medical care. 13. What is the third paragraph mainly about? A. The history of the Teeniors company. B. An introduction to Lopez’s enterprise. C. Reasons for helping the aging mother. D. Benefits of learning fundamental skills. 14. What can we learn from the example of Dorcey? A. Seniors’ independence has been weakened. B. Seniors should be accompanied by young people. C. Helping seniors to bridge digital divide is truly needed. D. Seniors shouldn’t be discriminated by younger generations. 15. Which of the following best describes Trish Lopez’s effort? A. Unrealistic. B. Conservative. C. Short-lived. D. Far-reaching. A 13. B 14. C 15. 根据第一段“In the USA, growing senior citizens are adopting technology, but most need help using new electronic devices such as smart phones.(在美国,越来越多的老年人正在采用技术,但大多数人需要帮助使用新的电子设备,如智能手机)”可知,美国老年人现在在生活中面临的问题是在使用技术方面落后了。故选A。 根据第三段“Founder Trish Lopez got the idea· in 2015 after realizing what troubled her aging mother. “She’ d lose a password, she’d lose a document and then she didn’t know some simple commands,” Lopez said. Patience and listening are some of the fundamental skills young people learn as Teeniors, and the program has served more than 3,000 seniors in New Mexico. The mission, Lopez said, is to empower senior citizens.(创始人特里什·洛佩兹在意识到她年迈的母亲的困扰后,于2015年产生了这个想法。‘她可能会丢失密码,丢失文件,然后她不知道一些简单的命令,’洛佩兹说。耐心和倾听是年轻人作为Teeniors在青少年时期学习的一些基本技能,这个项目已经为新墨西哥州的3000多名老年人提供了服务。洛佩兹说,这项任务是赋予老年人权力)”可知,第三段的主要内容是对洛佩兹的公司企业的介绍。故选B。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“Dorcey, a retired teacher from Lesotho, Africa, when her husband died suddenly, was left alone, too ashamed to admit she didn’t know how to answer her new phone. She tried to get help at stores, but clerks didn’t understand why she was confused. “They said ‘Oh, a child’ — I hate that phrase — ‘a child could do this’,” Dorcey said.(多尔西是非洲莱索托的一名退休教师,当她的丈夫突然去世时,她独自一人,羞于承认她不知道如何接听她的新手机。她试图在商店寻求帮助,但店员不理解她为什么困惑。“他们说‘哦,一个孩子’——我讨厌这个说法——‘一个孩子都能做到’,”多西说)”以及第五段“Dorcey found a Teenior instead, who helped her download WhatsApp. Now she talks to family and friends regularly in Africa and Europe for free.(Dorcey找到了一个Teenior,这个人帮助她下载WhatsApp。现在她可以免费和非洲和欧洲的家人和朋友定期联系。) ”可知,在Teenior的帮助下,原来不知道如何接听新手机的多西现在可以免费和非洲和欧洲的家人和朋友定期联系,由此可知,多西的例子告诉我们帮助老年人弥合数字鸿沟是非常必要的。故选C。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Trish Lopez never anticipated how Teeniors would affect the young people she employs. It’s not just teaching them tech skills, but also soft skills employers need such as emotional intelligence, problem-solving and communication. Their feedback has surprised her.(崔西·洛佩兹从来没有预料到Teeniors会对她雇佣的年轻人产生怎样的影响。 Many people don’t understand why anyone would travel by bicycle. It’s so exhausting. For me it’s the best way to travel. Why I love it and why the effort is paying off, you can read here. When I sit on the bike, I am free and flexible. I can pause at any time to eat or start the stove to enjoy a coffee with breathtaking views. I’m not dependent on bus or train. ____16____ I come to places I would never have seen. My bike gives me the possibility of don’t-need-to-plan, which leaves space for adventure. Because adventures don’t come around the corner during a planned hotel-vacation. I am the whole day in nature. The wind blows around my nose. ____17____ I see monkeys hanging directly above me in the tree, whales swimming along the coast, a bear waving at us and many more animals. Smelling the blackberries, I’m stopping to fill my stomach. In the car, bus or train I would have missed all of this and much more. ____18____ On a longer tour I’m no longer in my normal environment I’m freed from roles I have to perform and now I’m having time and inner peace to think and reflect. It changes me. I get to know my own limits, can react better to specific situations, and collect knowledge of human nature. ____19____ I know when I have to end for the day, so that I can still have power for the next day. I could tell hundreds of stories. Because of getting to know so many people I’m experiencing a lot. The travel form itself invites many to ask questions. And the best thing about it is, that all these stories make me rich. Rich in memories, on which I think with laughter. ____20____ A. I listen to the birds singing. B. I get the chance to look inside myself. C. It will change the way you see the world. D. I can decide for myself when and where to go. E. Before my start, I was fascinated of the bike touring community. F. Likewise, I find my own rhythm and how to assess my reserves of strength. G Nobody can ever take them away and they have an unspeakable value for me. D 17. A 18. B 19. F 20. 【16题详解】 根据前文“When I sit on the bike, I am free and flexible. I can pause at any time to eat or start the stove to enjoy a coffee with breathtaking views. I’m not dependent on bus or train.(当我坐在自行车上时,我是自由和灵活的。我可以在任何时候停下来吃饭,或者打开炉子享受咖啡,欣赏壮丽的景色。我不依赖公共汽车或火车)”以及后文“I come to places I would never have seen. My bike gives me the possibility of don’t-need-to-plan, which leaves space for adventure.(我来到了我从未见过的地方。我的自行车给了我不需要计划的可能性,这就为冒险留下了空间)”可知,本段主要讲述了骑自行车旅行的灵活性,所以D项“I can decide for myself when and where to go.(我可以自己决定何时何地去)”符合本段主题,符合文意。故选D项。 【17题详解】 根据前文“I am the whole day in nature. The wind blows around my nose.(我整天都在大自然中。风绕着我的鼻子吹)”以及后文“I see monkeys hanging directly above me in the tree, whales swimming along the coast, a bear waving at us and many more animals.(我看到猴子正挂在我头顶的树上,鲸鱼沿着海岸游来游去,一只熊向我们挥手,还有更多的动物)”可知,此处是描述作者在大自然中的感受和看到的景象,所以A项“I listen to the birds singing.(我听鸟儿唱歌)”符合此处主题。故选A项。 【18题详解】 分析设空,位于段首,为本段中心句,根据后文“On a longer tour I’m no longer in my normal environment, I’m freed from roles I have to perform and now I’m having time and inner peace to think and reflect. It changes me. I get to know my own limits, can react better to specific situations, and collect knowledge of human nature.(在更长时间的巡游中,我不再处于正常的环境中,我从必须扮演的角色中解放出来,现在我有时间和内心的平静来思考和反思。它改变了我。我知道了自己的极限,可以更好地应对特定的情况,并收集了人性的知识)”可知,本段主要讲述了自己有时间和内心的平静来思考和反思,所以B项“I get the chance to look inside myself.(我有机会审视自己的内心)”符合本段主题,为本段中心句。故选B项。 【19题详解】 根据前文“It changes me. I get to know my own limits, can react better to specific situations, and collect knowledge of human nature.(我知道了自己的极限,可以更好地应对特定的情况,并收集了人性的知识)”可知,此处在讲述作者审视自己的内心后的好处,所以F项“Likewise, I find my own rhythm and how to assess my reserves of strength.(同样,我找到了自己的节奏和如何评估我的力量储备)”符合此处主题,也是描述审视自己的内心后的好处。故选F项。 【20题详解】 设空位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“I could tell hundreds of stories. Because of getting to know so many people I’m experiencing a lot. The travel form itself invites many to ask questions. And the best thing about it is, that all these stories make me rich. Rich in memories, on which I think with laughter.(我能讲好几百个故事。因为认识了很多人,我经历了很多。旅行形式本身就吸引了许多人提出问题。最棒的是,这些故事让我变得富有。丰富的回忆,让我想起就笑)”可知,G项“Nobody can ever take them away and they have an unspeakable value for me.(没有人能把它们夺走,它们对我来说有着难以形容的价值)”是对前文的总结,讲述自己的旅行经历对作者来说有着难以形容的价值。 Can you imagine spending 7 restless nights in a noisy animal shelter to help a dog? The scary thing about being so tall when you’re so young is that people automatically teat you as if you’re older. Yes, I was the size of an adult (actually, bigger than most!) , but I was still just a kid. And acting more like an adult wouldn’t win me any fiends. As a card-carrying Good Boy, I wanted to meet adults’ expectations and get their praise, but as a Regular Kid, I wanted to be like my peers and get their friendship. I walked into school that first day in my bluejacket and trousers, the school uniform. I noticed some of my old classmates from my junior high, the ones who had turned their backs on me, and we continued our policy of actively ignoring one another. I felt the pain of their betrayal (背叛) , but I forced my face to remain expressionless. I was here to study hard at academics and to work hard at basketball under my new coach, Jack Donahue. I was here to be excellent. Nothing else mattered. Indeed I was excellent. I made the honor roll in the first semester, pleasing my parents and teachers. Leaming came naturally to me. I loved reading, especially about history and adventure stories like The Three Musketeers. Basketball, however, I had to work at to do well in. As a freshman, my style of play reflected my personality: politely passive. I had some skills, but I didn’t have an aggressive nature: The good player around me knew how to play rough, use their bodies with authority, and power their way to a rebound I knew I had to toughen up, and I was committed to getting better, but it wasn’t happening fast enough. One morning, our school team was scheduled to play a game against Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, and Coach Donahue surprised me by taking me into his office. I figured he was going to discuss his disappointment in my progress as a player, maybe even say something about it all being a big mistake. To my surprise, he handed me a team uniform. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All day, I allowed myself to imagine the game. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 To my surprise, he handed me a team uniform. It was a moment I had been waiting for, and yet, I couldn’t believe it was happening. As I held the uniform in my hands, I felt a sudden increase of determination and excitement. Coach Donahue then looked me in the eyes and said, “You’ve been working hard, and I believe in you. Today, you’re not just going to watch from the bench. You’re going to play.” I was speechless. It was a crucial moment that filled me with a mix of nervousness and anticipation. This was my chance to prove myself on the court, to show that I could be more than just a tall kid, but a valuable member of the team. All day, I allowed myself to imagine the game. I was determined to channel anticipation and nervousness into focus and determination. As I stepped on to the court, I could feel the energy and excitement beating in the air. The game was intense, and I had to push myself to keep up with the pace. In the crucial moments, I found myself making plays, contributing to the team’s effort, and even scoring a few points. The feeling of excitement and pride was indescribable. It was a turning point for me, not just as a basketball player, but as a person. I learned that sometimes, we have to step out of our comfort zones and push ourselves beyond what we think is possible. From that day on, I approached both my studies and basketball with a newfound confidence and determination. 词汇激活 行为类 ①走出:step out of/get out of ②转化:channel into/transform into ③决心:be determined to/decide to 情绪类 ①重要:crucial/vital ②期待:anticipation/expectation 【点睛】[高分句型1] I learned that sometimes, we have to step out of our comfort zones and push ourselves beyond what we think is possible. B Many people around me make a difference to the world on a daily basis — being kind in unexpected ways and sharing the generosity of their lives with others. A a major host of good deeds B. a sponsor of an eyeglass team C. a generous neighbor in his community D. a supporter of International Relief Teams 5. What do we know about the volunteers in the eyeglass team? A. Their working environment is simple. B. They are medical experts nationwide. C. Their initial preparation is inadequate. D They have served people in Guatemala for years. C There’s been an enormous amount of progress in language-generating AI over the past couple of years. A To introduce a new AI tool for writing poetry. A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Puzzled. D. Confident. D In the USA, growing senior citizens are adopting technology, but most need help using new electronic devices such as smart phones. 12. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
