The biggest secret about inventing is that anybody can do it! Perhaps this sounds crazy but it’s true. Maybe you have the wrong idea about inventing, so read on to discover the truth.
Wrong idea No. 1: An invention has to be something completely new.
Inventing means creating something “new”, but the idea could come from something that already exists (存在). The Wright brothers, got the idea of building a “flying machine” from watching birds.
Wrong idea No. 2: Inventors are born, not made.
There are a lot of factors (因素) that make invention possible. Take Mozart for example. He was born with a talent for music. But other factors were also important for his creativity. His father was a music teacher, and Mozart practised for hours every day.
Very successful creators don’t give up when they get something wrong. As one inventor said, “A failure was the right answer to the wrong question.”
Wrong idea No. 3: Inventors are always old people.
Don’t believe that you can’t invent something when you are young. Here are two examples of young inventors: Louis Braille went blind when he was a child. When he was fifteen, he invented a system of reading and writing for blind people that is still used in most countries today.
As a young man, George Nissen was watching some artists performing in a show. He watched how they fell into the safety net and then jumped back up again. This gave him an idea, and he invented the trampoline (蹦床).
26. How did the Wright brothers get the idea of building a “flying machine”?
A. By accident. B. By watching birds.
C. By reading books about flying. D. By studying other inventors’ products.
27. What is important for Mozart’s creativity except for his talent for music?
A. Being a music teacher. B. Failing from time to time.
C. Making friends with Edison. D. Practising for hours every day.
28. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 means ________.
A. We should always ask the right question
B. Don’t be afraid of failure in the inventing process
C. We should try different ways to solve a problem
D. Failure is always the answer to any question
29. Why are Louis Braille and George Nissen mentioned in the passage?
A. To introduce two useful inventions.
B. To show that young people can also invent.
C. To tell us how to become successful inventors.
D. To explain that blindness doesn’t prevent invention.
30. What’s the writer’s opinion about inventing?
A Anybody can be an inventor.
B. Inventors are born with special talents.
C. It’s impossible for the young to be inventors.
D. An invention has to be something completely new.

【答案】Dear Editor,
There are many rules in my family, some good and some bad.
My parents are very strict with me. For example, I have to get up at six every morning and I have to be in bed by ten. It’s hard for me but I think it’s necessary. Thanks to these rules, I am always in good health. Also, I can’t play computer games before I finish my homework. I think this is the best rule, because I can play computer games for a while after all, and it always leads me to do my homework first.
But I can’t go out on the night of weekdays, and on weekends, I have to go home before seven. I think that is unfair! Students should be allowed to have their own spare time with friends. We can study together and exercise together. This is the worst rule I have ever met!
Yours,
Li Hua

The biggest secret about inventing is that anybody can do it! Perhaps this sounds crazy, but it’s true.
C Making friends with Edison.
A. Anybody can be an inventor.
B. Inventors are born with special talents.
C It’s impossible for the young to be inventors.
D. An invention has to be something completely new.

Once a little weed (杂草) grew in a field. There were many tall and beautiful flowers around it. Lots of bees and butterflies came to them because of their nice smells and bright colours. The little weed wasn’t satisfied, because its flowers were tiny and simple.
One spring morning, three children came to the field. “Let’s pick some flowers for our grandma!” said one. “That’s a good idea!” said another. She will love all these bright and beautiful flowers!”
“What about that one?” the youngest child said, pointing at the little weed. “Forget it!” laughed the oldest brother. “That’s just a useless weed!”
Hearing this, the little weed felt even worse. “Am I really useless?” it asked itself. “Why was I put on the Earth? ”
In winter, all flowers were gone, only the little weed stood alone in the field. Just at that time, it noticed some birds coming above the field. “We are hungry!” they shouted. The little weed felt sorry for the poor birds and called out to them, “Hey! Down here! I have pods (豆荚) that you can eat!”
“You’re so kind!” The birds ate up the seeds (种子) in the pods thankfully. “They’re delicious. We can’t find anything better than what you gave us!”
