It is with great enthusiasm that we provide you with a collection of letters from our valued readers. These heartfelt letters offer various opinions and reactions to the stories and articles featured in our magazine. We are honored to share these insights with you, as they not only reflect the richness of our content but also the depth of engagement from our readers.
The Bear Who Came to Dinner
I remember reading this fascinating story when it was first published in the December 1964 Reader’s Digest. I told my fourth-grade teacher about it, and she asked me to read the story to the class. The class loved it! Maybe some young students will be as crazy about reading this reprint as I was reading the original.
—DALE BARNARD Semmes Alabama
The Weight of the Badge
This sobering and heartbreaking story brought me to tears. The men and women in law enforcement are the ones who arrive when called, stand between us and danger, and sometimes even take the bullet that was meant for us. To each one of them and their families, I say thank you, and God bless you.
—SHERYL VEDBRAATEN Crookston, Minnesota
Everyday Heroes
The story of Bev Wedelstedt’s difficult experience on Colorado’s Grays Peak was a real heart warmer. After six strangers took turns carrying her down the mountain after she injured her leg, Wedelstedt summed up her donor’s generosity with the words: “I’m still in awe.” After reading the story, I must say I’m still in “aww”!
—MIKE ADAMKOSKY Columbus, Ohio
Age 10 gets A 10
When I was 10, my father took a job in American Samoa. We traveled there on a new 707 Pan Am jet. I was attached to the stewardesses, as they were called then. How helpful and nice they were. Twenty years later, I headed to Honolulu for training to become a Pan Am stewardess—the best job ever.

Anna, a retired teacher, was walking her dogs when she found yellow marks stuck on some of the 99 oak trees in a lane close to her home. The marks indicated trees were bound to be felled (砍伐).
Anna loved that ancient line of oaks. She felt upset when remembering the moment she realized the oaks would be cut down. “My family and I would picnic under them, climb them, have rope swings on them. The trees are beautiful and mean so much.” she says. The trees were to be cut down as part of the new high-speed railway works. She called the railway helpline and was told there was nothing that could be done.
Anna had spent her career as a teacher telling children that “If something is wrong, you can’t stand by and let it happen. You have to speak up for people who can’t speak for themselves.” She thought, “Who is speaking for the trees?” So she began to save the trees with her daughter’s help. She started a petition (请愿书) which collected nearly 43,000 signatures. She also started a campaign, urging local people to sound their horns when driving down the road if they wanted the oaks to stay. “You could hear people honking all the way down the lane,” she says. “It was amazing.”
Anna made contact with a nonprofit. “We discovered seven species of bats were using the trees as a commuting corridor,” she says. So the felling stopped. “There are 87 trees still standing because of the campaign,” says Anna proudly. “But 20 to 30 trees still remain under threat. We want a green crossing in the gaps between trees for the bats, and we’d like the place to become a conservation area.”
For Anna, campaigning for the trees has been life-changing. “If you’d said that I’d be where I am now 16 months ago, I wouldn’t have believed you. I’m called ‘Bat Woman’ by my campaign colleagues now. For the trees and the bats - this is what I am and will be fighting for!” she says.
4. Why was Anna depressed when knowing the trees would be cut down?
A. She needed to find a new place to walk her dog.
B. Many of her sweet memories were related to them.
C. The railway helpline didn’t give useful reply to her.
D. The building of high-speed railway would bother her.
5. What inspired Anna to save the trees?
A The timely help from her daughter. B. The support from local people.
C. Her educational belief as a teacher. D. Her eagerness for being famous.
6. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The bats Anna had saved. B. The importance of the oak trees.
C. The danger the trees may face. D. The good results of Anna’s efforts.
7. What can we infer from Anna’s words?
A. She likes the name “Bat Woman” very much.
B. She has been what was expected 16 years ago.
C. She will continue to protect the trees and the bats.
D. She thinks the praise from colleagues is important.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. C

根据第二段“Anna loved that ancient line of oaks. She felt upset when remembering the moment she realized the oaks would be cut down. “My family and I would picnic under them, climb them, have rope swings on them. The trees are beautiful and mean so much.” she says. (安娜很喜欢那排古老的橡树。当她意识到这些橡树将被砍倒时,她感到很不安。“我和家人会在这些树下野餐、攀爬,在树上荡秋千。这些树很美,对我们意义非凡。”她说。)”可知,Anna的沮丧源于这些树承载了她与家人的美好回忆。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Anna had spent her career as a teacher telling children that “If something is wrong, you can’t stand by and let it happen. You have to speak up for people who can’t speak for themselves.” She thought, “Who is speaking for the trees?” So she began to save the trees with her daughter’s help. (安娜在她的教师生涯中一直告诉孩子们:“如果事情不对,你不能袖手旁观。你必须为那些不能为自己发声的人说话。”她想:“谁来为这些树发声?”于是,她开始和女儿一起努力拯救这些树。)”可知,是她的教育理念促使她采取行动拯救树木。故选C项。
【6题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Anna made contact with a nonprofit.
根据最后一段Anna的话“For the trees and the bats - this is what I am and will be fighting for! (为这些树和蝙蝠而战,这就是我过去和未来的使命!)”可知Anna要为这些树和蝙蝠而战并认为这就是她过去和未来的使命,可推断,她将持续投入保护工作。故选C项。

If you want to have a dream where you know you’re dreaming, you might be in luck. A phone app still in testing seems to increase users’ possibilities of having lucid (清醒的) dreams.
Before bed, the app has users listen to a specific sound, such as a series of beeps, and practice associating that signal with an awareness of their thoughts and body. When the app plays that sound six hours later, it’s meant to reactivate (激活) that self-awareness, allowing sleeping users to have a lucid dream.
These types of sensory signals have proved quite effective to have lucid dreams in sleep studies. A researcher usually tracks someone’s sleep to play sounds during the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage, when lucid dreams are most likely. New experiments show that a rough approximation of the technique using an app can promote lucid dreaming at home, researchers reported in the October Consciousness and Cognition.
Neuroscientist Karen Konkoly of Northwestern University in Evanston and his colleagues built and tested the app. In one experiment, 19 people used it every night for a week. Before that week, the group reported an average of 0.74 lucid dreams. During the week of app use, that went up to an average of 2.11 lucid dreams. But it wasn’t completely clear that the app’s sound signals led to that increase. So the team ran another experiment with 112 people.
Everyone got lucidity-triggering sounds from training while they slept the first night. But on the second night, the app changed the sounds mode. Only 40 people heard sounds from training while they slept. Another 35 got new sounds. The final 37 heard no sounds.
The first night, 17 percent of participants reported lucid dreams. The second night, people who heard training sounds kept up that rate of lucid dreaming while just 5 percent of the people in the other two groups had lucid dreams, indicating that the real sound signals were indeed behind the app’s effectiveness.
8. How does the app help users to have a lucid dream?
A. It restarts users’ awareness by playing some specific sounds.
B. It practices some special signals to confuse the thoughts of users.
C. It applies a technique to associate sounds with their sleep training.
D. It tracks users’ sleeping quality by playing sounds during the REM stage.
9. What can we know from the experiments?
A. The results of the two experiments were quite different.
B. People can’t have a lucid dream without the app’s sounds signals.
C. All the participants reported a lucid dream in the second experiment.
D. The use of the app did increase the possibilities of having lucid dreams.
10. How did the scientists do the research?
A. By making comparisons. B. By analyzing sounds.
C. By giving examples. D. By giving explanations.
11. Which may be the best title for the text?
A. An App: Improving Sleep Quality B. An App: Increasing Lucid Dream
C. An App: Letting Your Dream Fly D. An App: Exploring the Dream World
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. A 11. B

Growing up in Sweden, local and seasonal food was a given. Availability of food was lacking, so reducing limited food waste was important. My grandmother was amazing, creating delicious and healthy meals from seasonal ingredients while making sure of little food waste. She used remaining oatmeal from breakfast to bake bread. She made yesterday’s cooked potatoes into potato pies.
The climate and environment had a great effect on many regional Swedish dishes and local variations of national dishes. Mixing influences of other cooking styles while expressing the simplicity of Swedish food has helped Swedish cuisine develop. Vikings, soldiers in the Middle Ages and New World explorers all brought back different food and influences. Immigration from countries including Poland, Turkey and Syria has been key to the development of traditional Swedish dishes.
Due to Sweden’s geographic location, the climate can be terrible, particularly in North where long periods of cold temperatures, especially at night, make farming a challenge. Root vegetables are suitable to grow. Potatoes started to become a main food for every family in the 1800s and remain so today.
Sweden’s long coastline along with more than 90,000 lakes and many rivers provide a richness of seafood. Historically, fish is served on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This custom dates back to the Middle Ages when fasting (斋戒) was marked on Wednesdays and Fridays. For that reason, Tuesdays and Thursdays were days for a big meal. This food tradition remains today, even though fasting ended in the 1500s.
Economic development and easy access to food have led to an increase in the number of overweight Swedes. Environmental concerns have led to growing interest in using local and seasonal food. Professional chefs and home cooks are trying to make small changes to the recipes from older generations. For example, it is prevalent to collect what is available in nature to cook with and preserve at both high-end restaurants and homes. Time will tell if these changes will have a health effect on the population.
12. Why was grandmother mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To praise grandmother for her excellent cooking skills.
B. To illustrate grandmother had a good habit of not wasting.
C. To express the writer’s love and memories about grandmother.
D. To show local and seasonal food was in short supply in Sweden.
13. Which of the following can best describe the characters of Swedish food?
A. Simple and mixed. B. Delicious but salty.
C. Diverse but fatty. D. Plentiful and changing.
14. What does the underlined word “prevalent” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Unusual. B. Common. C. Difficult. D. Necessary.
15. What is the purpose of the author in writing the text?
A. To encourage readers to taste Swedish food.
B. To inspire people to concern food and climate.
C. To introduce the development of Swedish food.
D. To call on people not to waste food like Swedes.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. C

As is shown in the pie chart, 58 percent hold the opinion that eating at home is a better choice. In contrast, 34 percent choose to eat out. Still, 8% of the students are uncertain. Personally, I believe eating at home has advantages over eating out. First, it allows family members to fully participate in the preparation, strengthening family bonds. Eric was a boy who barely reached five feet in height. He was really, really small, but his friend Jonas was the tallest child in the whole school.
Feeling upset, Eric complained to his Dad that he was often ignored in PE classes. “It’s not fair,” said Eric. “Jonas always gets picked first in PE, but nobody picks me. I wished I were tall.”
“Jonas won’t grow forever,” said Dad, patting Eric on the shoulder gently. “At some point, Jonas will slow down and everyone else will catch up. And that includes you, Eric. You just have to be patient and live in the present.”
At school the next day, they had a new PE teacher, Mr. Groves. Mr. Groves divided them into teams to play basketball. First everyone had a go at dribbling (运球) the ball by weaving it in and out of cones. Eric found it easier than he expected and he was just the right size to twist and turn. Next, they tried shooting the ball through a hoop. The hoop looked so far away to Eric as if it were on the moon. Whenever the small figure tried to shoot, whispers and laughter spread through the court.
However, with Dad’s words echoing in his mind, Eric chose to be patient. He dreamed of one day standing on the court, sweat dripping, heart pounding, in a basketball game. Every day after school, Eric would make a beeline for the school’s basketball court and spend hours sharpening his skills.
Months later, when the news broke that his school was to compete in an inter-school basketball game, Eric’s eyes lit up with excitement. Mr. Groves told them there would be a basketball team trial (选拔赛) first. Eric made up his mind to give it a try. On the day of the trial, kids of all sizes and shapes came to the gym to show their skills, most of them towering over six feet tall, like young giants.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Suddenly, the gym door creaked open and a small figure appeared. It was Eric. His classmates were astonished to see him and his appearance caused a ripple of giggles. He had been practicing day and night, and his skills had improved remarkably. Despite the laughter, he squared his shoulders and prepared to show himself, with his eyes flashing with determination. Mr. Groves asked them to dribble and shoot the ball one by one. It was Eric’s turn. He dribbled the ball with confidence, his small stature allowing him to move swiftly. After that, he ran forward, leaped into the air, and shot the ball through the hoop with precision. Everyone was stunned. They clapped for Eric’s progress. When the trial ended, Eric’s name was on the list of the selected players.
Paragraph 2:
Finally, the day of the game arrived. The gym was packed with students and supporters, all eager to witness the intense game. Eric stepped onto the court, his heart pounding. The players were tall and strong except Eric. At the sight of Eric, the other team were laughing. But Eric just shook off their laughter with a confident smile. The game began, and Eric played like a star. His small frame seemed to explode with energy as he slipped through defenses. In the final minutes, the score was tied. Eric got the ball and, with a deep breath, took the last shot. The crowd erupted into applause. His team won, and Eric was carried on the shoulders of his teammates. He proved that height wasn’t everything and that patience and perseverance could lead to victory.

I remember reading this fascinating story when it was first published in the December 1964 Reader’s Digest. I told my fourth-grade teacher about it, and she asked me to read the story to the class. The class loved it! Maybe some young students will be as crazy about reading this reprint as I was reading the original.

The Weight of the Badge
This sobering and heartbreaking story brought me to tears. The men and women in law enforcement are the ones who arrive when called, stand between us and danger, and sometimes even take the bullet that was meant for us. To each one of them and their families, I say thank you, and God bless you.

Everyday Heroes
The story of Bev Wedelstedt’s difficult experience on Colorado’s Grays Peak was a real heart warmer. After six strangers took turns carrying her down the mountain after she injured her leg Wedelstedt summed up her donor’s generosity with the words: “I’m still in awe.” After reading the story, I must say I’m still in “aww”!

Growing up in Sweden local and seasonal food was a given.
Sweden’s long coastline along with more than 90000 lakes and many rivers provide a richness of seafood.
A To encourage readers to taste Swedish food.
B. To inspire people to concern food and climate.
C. To introduce the development of Swedish food.
D. To call on people not to waste food like Swedes.
