At 75 years of age, Keith Dobell enjoys the opportunity to “give back”, spending several days a week breaking a sweat maintaining and improving Brixworth Country Park, over 20 km of the Brampton Valley Way and Martin Moore Wood in Northamptonshire. The work is physical— involving cutting back overgrown vegetation and dangerous overhanging trees, through to repairing pathways— but rewarding.
“Personally, I enjoy the exercise, friendship and frequent contact with visitors,” Keith said. “Our team of volunteers from the Friends of Brampton Valley Way and Brixworth Country Park are a great bunch. The team of 12 consists mainly of elderly people but we have had a recent and welcome injection of younger members.”
“Keeping the bushes under control helps the young trees to get more light, and removing unwanted plants and exposing the ground encourages wildflowers such as bluebells and primroses, increasing their foothold. I think the wildlife has benefited as the habitat improves. We have some valuable flowers growing in secret spots.”
“On some days, the weather conditions are wonderful, but other times it can be pretty muddy, cold and unpleasant. On the worst of days we manage to find jobs inside maintaining tools, building nest boxes and signs. One difficult job is cleaning the areas on the hills next to the old train path on Brampton Valley Way. It's great for people who are good at climbing hills, but not so much for older folks like us. We managed to win grant funding to buy battery-powered equipment. Manual (手工的) work is all very well but mechanical help is a blessing.”
“There is nothing extraordinary about our work other than the pleasure it gives us, but the appreciation we get from the public makes it worthwhile. I will simply continue to enjoy my days cutting back bushes and digging out old pipes until my arms and legs object too much.”
4. What does Keith mainly do in Brixworth Country Park?

A big rise in plastic pollution has been uncovered by scientists, who have calculated that more than 170tn plastic particles (微粒) are afloat in the oceans. They have called for a reduction in the production of plastics, warning that “cleanup is futile” if they continue to be thrown into the environment at the current rate.
The research, by the 5 Gyres Institute and published in the journal Plos One, evaluates trends of ocean plastic from 1979 to 2019. The authors noted a rapid increase of marine plastic pollution and blamed the plastics industry for failing to recycle or design for recyclability. Dr Marcus Eriksen, the co-founder of the 5 Gyres Institute, said, “The exponential (指数级) increase in microplastics across the world’s oceans is a warning that we must act now at a global range, stop focusing on cleanup and recycling, and create an age of corporate responsibility for the entire life of the things they make.”
The researchers looked at 11,777 samples of floating ocean plastics to create a global time series that estimated the average counts and mass of microplastics in the ocean surface layer, lining up the data with international policy measures aimed at reducing plastic pollution to evaluate their effectiveness. It found that from 2005. there had been a rapid increase in the mass of ocean plastic.
The scientists estimate at least 170tn plastic particles are present in the oceans, with a combined weight of about 2 million tonnes. They say without immediate global action on plastic production, the rate of plastic entering aquatic environments is expected to increase about 2.6-fold from 2016 to 2040.
Researchers have warned that international policies on plastic are fragmented (碎片的), lack specificity and do not include measurable targets. They have called for corporate responsibility for plastic production to be enforced globally, with legally binding legislation (立法) that addresses the full life cycle of plastic, from extraction and manufacturing to its end of life.
8. What does the underlined word “futile” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Demanding. B. Pointless. C. Effective. D. Useful.
9. What is to blame for the rise in plastic pollution in the oceans according to Paragraph 2?
A. Government policy. B. The fishing industry.
C. The plastics industry. D. Failure to warn people timely.
10. What is the researchers’ suggestion on addressing the issue?
A. Encouraging individuals to recycle more.
B. Focusing on cleanup and recycling initiatives.
C. Increasing plastic production to meet global demands.
D. Calling for collective responsibility for plastic production.
11. What is the main issue addressed in the text?
A. The rise in plastic pollution in the oceans. B. The increasing demand for plastic products.
C. The need for better ocean cleanup initiatives. D. The advancement in plastic recycling technology.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. A

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了科学家发现海洋塑料污染大幅上升,指出塑料行业应为此负责,并呼吁全球对塑料生产承担共同责任。
【8题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“They have called for a reduction in the production of plastics, warning that ‘cleanup is futile’ if they continue to be thrown into the environment at the current rate. (他们呼吁减少塑料生产,并警告说,如果继续以目前的速度将塑料扔进环境中,‘清理是futile’)”中“warning that”和“if they continue to be thrown into the environment at the current rate.”
根据第二段中“The authors noted a rapid increase of marine plastic pollution and blamed the plastics industry for failing to recycle or design for recyclability. (作者指出海洋塑料污染迅速增加,并指责塑料行业未能进行回收利用或设计可回收的产品)”可知,海洋塑料污染增加应归咎于塑料行业。故选C项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Researchers have warned that international policies on plastic are fragmented (碎片的), lack specificity and do not include measurable targets. They have called for corporate responsibility for plastic production to be enforced globally, with legally binding legislation (立法) that addresses the full life cycle of plastic, from extraction and manufacturing to its end of life. (研究人员警告说,有关塑料的国际政策是支离破碎的,缺乏专一性,也没有可衡量的目标。他们呼吁在全球范围内强制实行塑料生产的企业责任,并制定具有法律约束力的立法,涵盖塑料从开采、制造到生命周期结束的整个过程)”可知,研究人员呼吁在全球范围内对塑料生产承担共同责任。故选D项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段“A big rise in plastic pollution has been uncovered by scientists, who have calculated that more than 17tn plastic particles (微粒) are afloat in the oceans. They have called for a reduction in the production of plastics, warning that “cleanup is futile ” if they continue to be thrown into the environment at the current rate. Boosted by China’s rapid development pace in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, more companies have noted the huge business potential in AI companionship sectors, as simulated (模拟) AI pets with adorable appearances gain increasing popularity among Chinese consumers.
Zhang Yi, CEO of the iiMedia Research Institute, said that consumers’ demand for emotional support and the capability of current AI technologies offer this type of products greater business potential.
A Beijing-based student in her 20’s surnamed Li, who is also an AI technology fan, said that she bought “Boo Boo”, a simulated AI robotic pet developed by Hangzhou-based Genmoor Technology. “I first learned about the product during a major assignment investigation and remembered it,” said Li, “I decided to buy it out of curiosity, but especially because of its adorable fluffy (毛茸茸的) appearance and the colour of its fur, which is just like my dog’s.”
Boo Boo is currently available on Chinese e-commerce platform Taobao priced at 1,399 yuan ($193.19). Over 300 units have been sold, with a 100 percent positive feedback rate in the last three months, the product’s page showed. One employee said that it sold out weeks ago and has now been restocked (补货).
The AI robotic pet can develop different emotions based on its interactions with the owner and make pet-like sounds, said the staffer, noting that it is not suitable for children under three years old. Zhang Yi stated that the advantage of having an AI pet is that it doesn’t require extra spending on food and deworming (驱虫), or time for walks every day, while noting that it still lacks interaction flexibility when compared with real dogs or cats.
In China, a company named WEILAN made a robot called BabyAlpha. This robot can do many things. It has a smart side, can learn, and can be controlled from far away. You can find more about it on their website.
Zhang Yi predicted more possibilities in applying AI technologies in emotional support and companionship robots, with target users covering all age groups, and whose functions include the ability to detect users’ potential physical and mental health issues.

Life can be full of setbacks — an argument with your teenager over breakfast, a missed train, or even just a spilled coffee can make you feel bad. ____16____ Here are some ideas:
Identify the problem.
The earlier you catch your bad mood, the easier it will be to do something about it. ____17____ It’s also important to name what’s going on. It’s better to say, “I’m upset because I’m behind on an important project and traffic was terrible today”, rather than the over-simplified “I feel awful”. Having a concrete reason for your unhappiness gives you something to work on.
Take a moment to be grateful.
____18____ So as soon as you start to feel negative, change your mood by asking yourself, “What are three good things that are going on right now?” Consider saying them out loud or writing them down. This will help you see the bad day in a better way.
Take action.
Another way to avoid feeling bad is to take a single concrete action. Send that email that you’ve been meaning to get to or make a phone call you’ve been avoiding. ____19____ You might be buried in your inbox (收件箱), but if you take two minutes to send an email praising or thanking someone else, you’ll actually feel like you’ve gained time.
Change your routine.
If you’re feeling bad, don’t stay at your desk all day. A change of scenery often helps signal to your brain that the current mood doesn’t need to be sustained. Drive around, take a walk, or just go to a different floor. The key is to put yourself in a different physical location. And once you’re there, take a few deep breaths. ____20____
A. When you do have bad days, it’s vital to reflect on them.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Lin Fei was a diligent (勤勉的) student, always burying his head in books and earning top grades. His teachers admired his dedication and thirst for knowledge. When he graduated and entered a famous university, he was determined to continue his academic excellence and aimed to secure a scholarship.
At university, Lin Fei encountered a challenging course titled “Advanced Physics”, taught by the strict and respected Professor Wang. On the first day of class, Professor Wang warned the students about the course’s difficulty, causing many to drop the course immediately. Lin Fei, however, wasn’t scared; he believed in his ability to tackle any subject.
Professor Wang was known for his high expectations and his commitment to pushing students to achieve their best. He often said in class, “You alone must set your own standard of excellence,” a sentence that puzzled Lin Fei, as he had always found school to be easy.
The first test arrived, and Lin Fei, overconfident in his abilities, did not prepare as diligently as he should have. He even spent the night before the test watching a movie with friends. The next day, he was shocked to receive a 75. C+, on his test paper. Physics was his strongest subject, and he had never received such a low grade before. He approached Professor Wang, who listened to his arguments and explained that grades were a reflection of effort and understanding.
Realizing that his scholarship was now in jeopardy (处于危险境地), Lin Fei decided to turn things around. He understood that this was his last chance to improve his course grade. He began to study with a newfound determination, spending hours each day understanding the complex concepts that had previously eluded (把……难倒) him. He attended every lecture, completed all assignments diligently, and spent additional hours in the library, going over textbooks and solving problems. As the next test approached, Lin Fei felt very calm. He knew he had tried his best.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The day after the test, he was excited to find that he had earned an A.

Encouraged by this achievement, Lin Fei redoubled his efforts in other courses as well.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
The day after the test, he was excited to find that he had earned an A. He rushed to Professor Wang’s office, eager to share the news. Professor Wang, who seemed to be expecting him, said, “If I had given you the grade you expected initially, you wouldn’t have worked as hard as you did.” Lin Fei was speechless, realizing the wisdom behind Professor Wang’s approach. This experience taught him a valuable lesson about the importance of perseverance and the role of challenges in promoting growth.
Encouraged by this achievement, Lin Fei redoubled his efforts in other courses as well. He became more active in class discussions, often sharing his insights and seeking clarification on challenging topics. His classmates, too, noticed the change and began to approach him for help with their studies. Lin Fei, now a role model of academic excellence, realized that setting one’s own standard of excellence meant always trying to do better than before, regardless of past accomplishments. As the term drew to a close, he was happily awarded the scholarship he had always dreamed of.

A. Maintain and improve the park. B. Provide assistance to visitors.
C. Plant new trees and flowers. D. Manage the park's finances.
5. How does Keith describe his team of volunteers?
A They work only on weekends. B. They are all young and energetic.
C. They are paid employees of the park. D. They are a diverse group with varying ages.
6. What effect does keeping the bushes under control have on the wildlife?
A. It increases the amount of insects. B. It provides more light for young trees.
C. It discourages the growth of wildflowers. D. It improves the habitat for unwanted plants.
7. What did Keith think of his job?
A. Frustrating. B. Rewarding. C. Complicated. D. Effortless.

____18____ So as soon as you start to feel negative change your mood by asking yourself, “What are three good things that are going on right now?” Consider saying them out loud or writing them down.

Lin Fei was a diligent (勤勉) student, always burying his head in books and earning top grades.
