A funny thing happened to Derby when he was on the way to work. As he approached the First National Bank this morning, he saw a young man trying to start his car. The young man tried again and again but still failed to get the car moving.
“It looks like you’ve got a problem,” Derby said.
“I’m afraid so,” replied the young man, who looked very worried. “I’m in a big hurry, but I can’t start my car!”
“Is there anything I can do to help?” Derby asked.
The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases to the taxi stop. I have called for a taxi and it is coming.”
“No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help,” Derby said.
The young man took the suitcases from the back seat and handed them to Derby. After Derby walked about 100 meters, the air was suddenly filled with gun shots and sharp sounds from police cars across the streets.
“Bank robbery (抢劫)!” one bystander shouted and the crowds on the street started running in all directions.
Still carrying the suitcases, Derby joined the crowds and started running, too. Distracted (分心) by the gun shots, Derby ran right into a young woman in front of him. She turned around and looked at the suitcases with a very strange expression on the face.
“Why is she looking at me like that?” Derby wondered. “The suitcases! She thinks I’m one of the thieves!”
His doubt was confirmed immediately when the woman started yelling, “The thief! The thief!”
Suddenly, the crowds turned toward Derby. Feeling threatened, Derby ran even faster. To make things worse, the young man also shouted, “Stop! Stop!”
“Why is he shouting? Are these suitcases full of the stolen money?” Derby thought. “I would be killed by the crowds if I were caught now while the young man refused to tell the truth!”

写作示范一
Having considered all the possibilities, Derby decided to run to the police station. With the suitcases still in his hands, he dashed through the streets, ignoring the shouts behind him. His heart pounded in his chest, and sweat dripped down his forehead. People along the way looked at him suspiciously, and some even joined the chase, believing he was a criminal. Finally, he reached the police station and rushed inside, gasping for breath. “I'm not a thief!” he cried out. “This is all a misunderstanding!” The policemen looked at him suspiciously, but they listened as Derby quickly explained the situation from the start.
But after the policemen unlocked the suitcases, they appeared very confused. Inside were not stolen banknotes but ordinary clothes and some documents. Just then, the young man who had asked Derby for help arrived at the police station, out of breath. He apologized profusely, saying that he had been so panicked by the sudden gunshots that he hadn't been able to think straight and clarify things in time. The misunderstanding was finally cleared up. Derby let out a long sigh of relief, and the young man thanked him sincerely for his help. They shook hands, and Derby left the police station with a sense of amusement and relief, realizing that this would be a story to tell for a long time.
写作示范二
Having considered all the possibilities, Derby decided to run to the police station. He zigzagged through the crowded streets, the heavy suitcases making his running more difficult. The shouts of “thief” seemed to be closing in on him, and he felt a lump in his throat. As he ran, he shouted back, “I'm innocent! It's a mistake!” Finally, he burst into the police station. The officers there were startled, but Derby managed to stammer out his story, his words tumbling over each other in his haste.
But after the policemen unlocked the suitcases, they appeared very confused. There was nothing valuable or stolen inside. At that moment, the young man rushed in, his face flushed. He immediately started explaining how he had been so scared by the gunshots that he had lost his wits. The policemen nodded, understanding the situation. Derby felt a wave of relief wash over him. The young man apologized repeatedly, and Derby, though still a bit shaken, managed a weak smile. They both left the police station, and Derby couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of the whole incident, realizing that life was full of such unexpected twists.
