A
Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it? Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert (沙漠), so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It’s like someone walking six kilometres through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth’s magnetic field (磁场), while humans can’t. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.

On a cold day in winter, a 13-year-old boy, living in Qinghai Province, was heading down a mountaintop with his family. Suddenly, they saw two snow leopards (雪豹) near the Lancang River. “I see them for the first time. They look so cool!” he said.
Since the mid-20th century, the area of snow, grasslands and lakes in Sanjiangyuan has become smaller because of climate change and human activities. Many wild animals in the area have died out. Snow leopards are endangered.
Later, China set up Sanjiangyuan Nature Reserve (保护区) to better protect the area and the wildlife there. In these years, the number of wild animals has been increasing. More than 70,000 Tibetan antelopes (藏羚羊) live there now. And over 1,000 snow leopards can be found in the area. It’s higher than the average number around the world.
The local people have improved their understanding about environmental protection and have tried hard to protect the environment in Sanjiangyuan over the years. They still live on selling caterpillar fungus (冬虫夏草) they’ve found in grasslands. In the past, they carried food with them in plastic bags and left the bags and food waste behind. But now the local people have realized they should live together with nature in harmony. They often pick up waste on the grasslands. People also take their plastic bags and food waste down the mountain after eating. The local environment has taken on a new look. Many young people there said, “We will continue to guard our home and make it more beautiful.”

Technology is the first power!
It is a great joy and a matter of pride to see China’s high technology is brightly shining from the sky to the ground.
It is widely known that China has well-developed high-speed railway network in the world. Now, the country is breaking its own speed record with the CR450. The CR450 can travel at a top speed of 453 kilometers an hour. Once put into use, it will take just about 2.5 hours to travel from Beijing to Shanghai, which takes at least 4.5 hours at the moment. Even though it can travel so fast, it can also start braking (刹车) quickly, taking just 1.7 seconds, and its noise level keeps low.
It creates a safe and comfortable environment for passengers. With the advantages, the CR450 shows China’s leading role and great power to the world.
The AG60E is China’s self-developed lightweight two-seat electric plane. It is 6.9 meters long, 2.6 meters high and 8.6 meters wide. It is mainly designed for pilot training, flight experience, and private travel. It uses an electric power system. Compared with the traditional plane, it doesn’t send out greenhouse gases, and its noise level is much lower. The AG60E electric plane draws the world’s attention, for it is a practice of China’s aviation industry (航空工业) towards air pollution. The AG60E is only a starting point. It is expected to become an important force to achieve green and low-carbon development in the field of aviation.

C. Warm and bright. D. Warm and fast.
23. Why does the world pay attention to the AG60E?
A. It is self-developed by China. B. It can be used in many fields.
C. It’s environmentally friendly. D. It can run in the sky.
24. What do the CR450 and the AG60E have in common?
