It’s been a very hard and emotional year for me. My mum had been ill for 6 years and over that time she and I went to countless treatments and surgeries. She battled through them all with so much grace and seemed to beat each new cancer that popped up. But this year was different. Things changed dramatically and she lost her battle after 4 very intense and exhausting months.
During the time my husband and I were caring for her, my poor old car developed problems too. I pushed it for months since I didn’t have time to be off the road. Long story short, a new light appeared. This one was the engine light. I was no longer needing my car the way I had so I decided to call my repairman about it.
He asked me to bring the car in the next morning. When I arrived, he saw me parking from the office and immediately stopped what he was doing and came out. I’d expected to wait inside while he finished what he was doing but he recognized my car and came to me.
I asked him how he was as I’d not seen him in 6 months or more. He told me how busy it was. But when he asked me, I immediately started to well up. He looked at me and I told him it had been a heartbreaking year. He told me about losing his grandparents so I shared as well.
He gave me the not so great diagnosis of my car, told me to keep an eye on it, touched my arm and gave me a hug. His small act of kindness was giving me his attention, something he probably thought nothing of, but to me, it was huge. His genuine care and concern gave me a glimmer of light during a time when life was feeling so dark.
4. What was the main challenge the author faced this year?
A. Losing her mother. B. Struggles with health.
C. Problems with the car. D. Facing financial stress.
5. Why did the author put off repairing her car?
A. She didn’t trust the repairman’s techniques. B. She couldn’t afford to repair it at the time.
C. She couldn’t find time due to family duties. D. She didn’t take the problem seriously.
6. What does the underlined phrase “well up” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Burst out laughing. B. Get extremely frightened.
C. Become tearful. D. Feel suddenly energetic.
7. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Taking responsibilities can be a stressful thing.
B. Life’s challenges often come from unexpected situations.
C. Building strong relationships helps solve problems.
D. Acts of kindness can provide comfort during difficult times.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. C 7. D

For patients with serious illness, a doctor, who understands and shares the feelings of patients, can make a huge difference. Psychologist Janine Westendorp studied the impact of communication in healthcare and emphasized the importance of showing support, even when there’s no cure available. She works at the Helen Dowling Institute, providing psychological support to cancer patients and their loved ones. From her experience, she noticed how patients often revisit what doctors said and how they said it. Poor communication, such as a rushed or inattentive conversation, can make patients feel helpless and unsupported.
Westendorp and her team reviewed 45 recorded discussions between doctors and women with incurable breast cancer. Patients filled out questionnaires before and after the discussions to assess their fears and what they remembered. The researchers also evaluated the doctors’ emotional connection using the NURSE acronym (naming, understanding, respecting, supporting, and exploring). They found that many doctors showed understanding, but there was room for improvement, especially in giving patients hope, even if a cure isn’t possible. For instance, doctors can offer hope about effective pain management or maintaining quality of life.
Westendorp also explored harmful communication. She identified four key issues: lack of personal information, lack of involvement in decision-making, not being seen or heard, and lack of continuity in care. Statements, like “There’s nothing more we can do for you” and “Your condition is too advanced for further treatment”, are particularly damaging. She stresses that doctors should always communicate ongoing support and care.
Although time pressure is a challenge for healthcare professionals, better communication doesn’t have to take much time. Simple statements like “We’re going to take good care of you” can ease patients’ anxiety and improve their experience. Westendorp believes investing time in building relationships with patients early on saves time in the long run.
8. Why is showing support important for seriously-ill patients?
A. It helps patients focus on their recovery process.
B. It contributes to patients feeling less helpless.
C. It prevents doctors from being overly stressed.
D. It improves the medical treatment outcome.
9. What can be learned about the NURSE acronym from Paragraph 2?
A. It refers to a nurse skills training method.
B. It is a doctor knowledge evaluation system.
C. It stands for a special type of cancer treatment.
D. It shows doctor-patient interaction points.
10. How does the author illustrate harmful communication according to Paragraph 3?
A. By presenting statistical data. B. By quoting from famous scholars.
C. By providing real-life stories. D. By giving examples of speaking.
11. What statement may the author agree with according to the last paragraph?
A. Healthcare professionals should focus on quick treatments.
B. Early communication investment helps save time later.
C. Time pressure is a reason for professionals’ poor communication.
D. Simple statements do not ease patients’ anxiety.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. D 11. B

Since they started studying African elephants in 1975, biologists Joyce Poole and Mickey Pardo noticed that sometimes an elephant would call out to their relatives. Now, they and their team have published new research which provides evidence that elephants address one another with names unique to each individual.
The team analyzed data from 101 African elephants making 469 separate calls to 117 receivers. They concentrated on contact, greeting, and caregiving calls, which elephants use when starting contact with an unseen family member, approaching another in touching distance, and nurturing a baby. These were the types of calls that researchers thought were most likely to contain a name.
“Our data suggest that elephant names account for only a small part in the call,” says Pardo. “Elephants may include more information in a single sound, so the name might be only one part of a complex signal that conveys other information at the same time.” Though it is not clear how a name gets into a call, this study indicates that it is there.
The researchers also conducted field experiments, playing back multiple recordings to the studied elephants. The findings revealed dramatic reactions, showing that elephants do recognize their own “name,” and respond to it, Pardo says. “For example, when an elephant named Donatella heard a playback of a call meant for her, she responded eight times, approached the speaker, and searched behind it.” But when hearing a recording from Frida to her cousin Rothko, Donatella barely reacted, calling just once and not approaching the speaker.
“We’re really in early stages to try and figure out what’s going on,” Poole says. For instance, Poole wonders if elephants also have names for places. “This study opens a door into how their mind works,” she adds, “We’re making a step to understanding them better, and that will help us live with them better.”
12. What do scientists discover in the new research?
A. Elephants change their names over time.
B. Elephants’ names are the main part of the calls.
C. Elephants call each other by specific names.
D. Elephants use calls with names frequently.
13. What did the researchers focus on in Paragraph 2?
A. The specific types of calls used in social interactions.
B. The regular patterns of different calls among elephants.
C. The number of individual calls each elephant produced.
D. The overall count of elephants and receivers in the study.
14. How do elephants react to playbacks of calls intended for them?
A. They ignore the calls. B. They react obviously.
C. They imitate the calls. D. They move away.
15. What is the significance of this study according to Poole?
A. It suggests that elephants can use specific names.
B. It reveals that elephant calls carry complex signals.
C. It proves that elephants can identify family members.
D. It helps that elephants and humans coexist in harmony.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was my first week in the big city, staying with my Aunt Mary. Everything felt boring — the towering buildings, the constant noise, and the endless streams of people. I missed the quiet, familiar fields of my countryside home. That morning, Aunt Mary decided to take me to a downtown supermarket.
“You’ve never seen a place like this before, have you?” she asked with a smile. “It’s just a market.” I replied, showing disinterest. Aunt Mary smiled, “Oh, but it’s so much more. Think of it as an adventure. Each stand has something new to show you. Every item here has a story, if you’re willing to listen.” I roiled my eyes. “Things in the market don’t have stories. I prefer our small market back home in the countryside. At least everything there is simple and straightforward.”
She didn’t argue, just guiding me to a fruit stand. My eyes widened at the sight of unfamiliar fruits in all shapes and colors. Aunt Mary picked up a strange-looking fruit: a green orange. I frowned (皱眉). “That’s not ripe. Oranges are supposed to be orange,” I said immediately. Aunt Mary smiled gently, “Why not give it a try?” I shook my head.
Without a word, she bought a few green oranges and placed them in her basket. We continued walking through the supermarket, passing by stalls filled with items I’d never seen before. I was curious but kept my questions to myself, determined to appear uninterested.
On our way back to her apartment, Aunt Mary stopped by a park bench (长凳) and sat down, bending over to find something in her basket.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
She took out one green orange, peeled and shared it with me.

I changed my mind and decided to have a taste.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】She took out one green orange, peeled and shared it with me. I shook my head, saying “No. thanks. I’m absolutely certain that it’s unripe and it will taste sour and terrible.” “You won’t know unless you try,” she said with a knowing smile. She popped a piece into her mouth and nodded in satisfaction. Watching her enjoy it, I stared at her in disbelief. I couldn’t help but wonder — could a green orange really taste good? Maybe I shouldn’t overly stick to what I know.
I changed my mind and decided to have a taste. Cautiously, I placed one piece in my mouth. To my surprise, it was incredibly sweet and juicy, far better than any orange I’d ever tasted. My eyes widened in amazement as I looked at my aunt. She smiled as if expecting my reaction. “Life is like this orange,” she said. “You can’t judge it by how it looks or what you assume. You have to experience it by yourself to truly understand its value.” I nodded thoughtfully. That day, I learned a valuable lesson: to embrace new experiences with an open mind and a curious heart.

C Building strong relationships helps solve problems.
D. Acts of kindness can provide comfort during difficult times.
C
C It prevents doctors from being overly stressed.

14. How do elephants react to playbacks of calls intended for them?
A. They ignore the calls. B. They react obviously.
C. They imitate the calls. D. They move away.

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
