Jesse Owens, an African-American athlete, faced enormous pressure in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Despite racial mistreatment present at the Berlin Games, he made history by winning four Olympic gold medals in the 100m, 200m, 4×100m relay, and long jump events—an accomplishment no other Olympian had ever made. His remarkable achievement shattered (粉碎) Adolf Hitler’s plan to prove Aryan (雅利安人的) superiority.
While Owens’ accomplishment was unique, he might have lost one of his gold medals had it not been for the advice from an unlikely ally (盟友)—German long jumper Luz Long. During the long jump event, Owens fouled (犯规) on his first two attempts and had only one final chance to qualify for the final. In an act of sportsmanship, Long walked up and suggested Owens change his mark and take off well before the foul line in order to avoid another foul. Following Long’s advice, Owens jumped a distance of 25 feet on his final try to qualify for the final.
As it turned out, Owens bagged the gold, setting a new Olympic record (8.06m) while Long grabbed silver (7.87m). The German was the first to congratulate Owens and later walked around the stadium, arm-in-arm with Owens. They even posed together for pictures. It was a classy act of sportsmanship that stayed with Owens for the rest of his life. “It took a lot of courage for him to befriend me. You can melt down all the medals and cups I have and they wouldn’t be a plating on the 24-karat friendship I felt for Luz Long at that moment,” the American said.
Owens and Long stayed connected even after the Games. Long lost his life during the Battle of St Pietro later in 1943, but he wrote a touching letter to Owens before he died. In the letter, he begged Owens to find his young son after the war and tell him about his father.
Years have passed by but their bond still serves as a strong message, highlighting “how things can be between men on this earth”, as written in the letter.
24 What do we know about Owens?
A. Adolf Hitler supported him greatly.
B. He was mistreated because he was a black athlete.
C. He made history in the Olympic Games with ease.
D. He received five gold medals in the 1936 Olympic Games.
25. What did Long do to help Owens during the long jump event?
A. He fouled on his first two attempts.
B. He provided technical advice for Owens.
C. He cheered for Owens with great passion.
D. He participated in the event alongside Owens.
26. How would Owens feel after the long jump event?
A. Shocked and embarrassed. B. Ashamed and uneasy.
C. Moved and puzzled. D. Grateful and excited.
27. What message does the story of Owens and Long convey?
A. Equality is essential for the Olympic Games.
B. Death is insignificant in the face of brotherhood.
C. The power of friendship bridges racial divides.
D. Common goals unite people from diverse backgrounds.

When learning a foreign language, most people fall back on traditional ways: reading, writing, listening and repeating. But Brian Mathias’ research team found out that if you gesture (做手势) with your arms while studying, you can remember the vocabulary better, even months later.
As Mathias describes, they had 22 German-speaking adults learn a total of 90 invented words over four days. While the test subjects first heard the new vocabulary, they were shown a video of a person making a gesture that matched the meaning of the word. When the word was repeated, the subjects performed the gesture themselves. Five months later, they were asked to translate the vocabulary they had learned into German. At the same time, they had equipment attached to their heads that sent weak distracting signals to their primary motor cortex (运动皮层)—the brain area that controls voluntary arm movements. Those who performed better on the task showed a higher level of activity in their motor cortex. The researchers concluded that the motor cortex contributed to the translation of the vocabulary learned with gestures. The effect did not occur when the subjects were only presented with matching pictures instead of gestures.
Another research group led by Leipzig had young adults and eight-year-old children listen to new vocabulary for five days, paired with matching pictures or videos of gestures. After two months, the two methods were still equally effective. But after six months, the adults benefited more from the gestures than the pictures, while the children were helped equally by both.
But it is not only the motor cortex itself that promotes learning. The meaning expressed by the gesture also figures in, “I think we underuse gesture in our classrooms,” Goldin Meadow says. “Good teachers and good listeners use it, but not always in a systematic way. Others don’t necessarily bring it into the class—and it could be used more often and more effectively.”
28. Why was equipment attached to the subjects’ heads during Mathias’ test?
A. To count words.
B. To record emotion.
C. To influence brain activity.
D. To give clues to questions.
29. What does Leipzig’s research tell us about language learning?
A. Adults and children are equally good learners.
B. Pictures have little influence on language learning.
C. Pictures are found more helpful than videos for children.
D. Benefits of gestures are more obvious in adults in the long run.
30. What will probably be talked about in the next paragraph of the text?
A. What gestures to use at math class.
B. How to make better use of gestures.
C. How to teach listening in a systematic way.
D. Why teachers should show some pictures when teaching.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The motor cortex promotes learning.
B. Gestures benefit vocabulary learning.
C. Teachers should apply more gestures at class.
D. Gestures are better than pictures in vocabulary learning.

For 234 years, the bald eagle (白头鹫) has been an official symbol of the US. It is, after all, the national animal. But in May, 2016, the former President Barack Obama signed a law naming the bison (野牛) the national mammal. Since then, the eagle has had to share its perch.
The North American bison has long been a symbol of the West. “No other native animal tells America’s story better. It is a long-lasting symbol of power, Native American culture, and the Western wildness. At one time, tens of millions of bison lived in North America. For Native American communities, bison were a source of food and clothing. Bison were at the very heart of their traditional way of life,” says Missouri congressman William Lacy.
That way of life changed in the mid-1800s. People began to travel west and hunt bison. Some hunted for the same reason as Native Americans did. But others killed bison for sport. In 1894, it became illegal to kill bison. But it was almost too late. By the early 1900s, fewer than 1,000 wild bison remained in America.
Some people realized the animals needed to be saved. President Theodore Roosevelt, William Hornaday — the first director of the Bronx Zoo, in New York City — and others formed the American Bison Society. The group was to bring back the bison. Native American tribes (部落) and locals also joined the fight. By the mid-1930s, bison were no longer in danger.
Today, there are about 500,000 North American bison. They live in all 50 states. “Only about 30,000 of those animals are living as truly wild bison. Others live on protected lands or in zoos,” says Pat Thomas, the associate director of the Bronx Zoo.
Thomas says naming the bison the national mammal was an important step in making sure the animal is well protected. “This recognition is beginning to complete the circle,” he says, “from a time when there were millions of wild bison, to when bison were hunted until they nearly died out, to the beginning of the recovery.”
32. What does the underlined word “perch” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Famous name. B. High place.
C. Office. D. Food.
33. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The importance of bison in American culture.
B. The process bison became the national animal.
C. The reason why bison became endangered.
D. The result brought by a law against killing them.
34. What do we know about the American Bison Society?
A. It contributed much to bison protection.
B. It hunted bison for food and clothing.
C. It was founded by the president of America.
D. It helped keep bison in the wild.
35. What was Thomas’ attitude towards the May law on bison?
A. Dissatisfied. B. Neutral.
C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.

The yearly English Drama Contest was announced. The excitement filled the hallways as students from every class began preparing for this popular event. However, due to the tight schedule, the initial play could be performed in Chinese. This activity set the stage for a fierce competition between my team and Jim’s, both choosing to act the same classic episode from “Journey to the West”.
Jim was once an exchange student to America with strong English skills, allowing him to practice their scenes effortlessly in English. Meanwhile, our team shined not in language but in performance artistry. Our drama featured traditional instruments like the flute (笛子) and hand drums setting the scene, while several talented dancers among us gracefully acted beautiful demons (妖怪). My own role as Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, stood out, acting out his spirit with accurate imitation (模仿) of his voice, actions, and even performing impressive somersaults (空翻) that left audiences in awe.
The competition was fierce, yet our efforts paid off when our performance earned widespread praise from the judges, leading us to the final round. But here laid the challenge: We had to adapt our entire lines into English, a task discouraging for our less experienced team. In desperation, I turned to Jim, who had already finished the lines in English. Unfortunately, still sad for their unexpected failure, Jim refused my request.
Refusing to give up, I hatched a plan. Sliding into their classroom during lunch break when no one was around, I took their script (剧本), went back to my seat and decided to copy it, believing it was the only way to save our hard work.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As I was busy copying it, Jim appeared before me.

On the day of the final show, we were fully prepared with Jim’s lines written for us.

【原文】 I am Sam. I grew up in South Wales. My favorite place to play was out on the hills where my imagination had plenty of space to expand. My family moved out of Wales when I was thirteen. I went to a new school. One of my subjects was French. Because I had never learned any French, my teacher told me to sit in the corner and write anything I was interested in. That’s the time I started writing, just for myself, and I’ve been writing ever since. I enjoy writing fantastic stories. I think they’re like the old fairy tales, and can teach you important things. But I never write horror stories. I am in my forties on the outside, twelve on the inside. I like rock music, Indian and Chinese food, and I enjoy drinking. I live in a small village with my wife Mary, ducks, cats, goats, hens and lots of rabbits. If you’d like to find out more about me and hope to buy my books, go to my blog.

24. What do we know about Owens?

28 Why was equipment attached to the subjects’ heads during Mathias’ test?
A. To count words.
B. To record emotion.
C. To influence brain activity.
D. To give clues to questions.
29. What does Leipzig’s research tell us about language learning?
A Adults and children are equally good learners.
【答案】28. C 29. D 30. B 31. B

B. Neutral.
C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.
【答案】32. B 33. C 34. A 35. D

根据上文“Most people go on their first camping adventure before setting up their tents for the first time.(大多数人还没有第一次搭过帐篷就开始了他们的第一次露营冒险。)”和下文“You don’t want to find yourself having problems with your tent in the middle of nowhere when it is about to get dark.(你不想在天快黑的时候,发现自己在荒郊野外帐篷出了问题吧)”可知,许多人还不会搭建帐篷就去露营,要搭建帐篷的时候却发现帐篷出了问题,这样是不行的,可推理出此处表达的是不要那样做,与A项“Don’t do that!(不要那样做)”表达的意思一致,故选A项。
【40题详解】
根据下文“That’s why you should bring a garbage bag for such situations and food rest(而这就是你应该在这种情况和用餐休息时携带垃圾袋的原因)”可知,下文说的是要随身携带垃圾袋,可推理出此处会对随身携带垃圾袋的原因进行解释,比如你可能会携带一次性东西,与F项“You will also have some one-way dishes that you won’t use afterward.(你也会有一些之后不会再用的一次性餐具。)”表达的意思一致,因为这些都会产生垃圾,所以要带垃圾袋,故选F项。

第二节 (满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As I was busy copying it, Jim appeared before me.

On the day of the final show, we were fully prepared with Jim’s lines written for us.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 As I was busy copying it, Jim appeared before me. My heart skipped a beat as I looked up to see his face, a mix of surprise and disappointment. “What are you doing?” he asked, his voice firm yet tinged with sadness. I stammered, trying to explain my desperation and the pressure our team was under. Jim listened quietly, his expression softening. “I understand,” he finally said, “but this isn’t the way. Let’s work together to make this better.” His words caught me off guard, but I saw the sincerity in his eyes. We decided to collaborate, merging our strengths to create something truly special.
On the day of the final show, we were fully prepared with Jim’s lines written for us. The stage was set, and the audience was eager. As the curtains rose, our combined efforts shone through. The English dialogue, polished by Jim’s expertise, flowed smoothly, enhancing the performance. My portrayal of Sun Wukong, now enriched with Jim’s input, captivated the audience. The traditional instruments and graceful dances added a unique charm, blending seamlessly with the English narrative. The applause at the end was thunderous, a testament to our unity and hard work. We had not only overcome our challenges but had also set a new standard for the Competition, proving that collaboration can lead to extraordinary results.
