M: New York is the birthplace of the modern art movement in the US.
W: The only thing I was missing was sculpture. The watercolor paintings were my favorite.
M: I was also disappointed about the lack of sculpture, but in general, I liked it a lot. Hey, how long do you think it takes to become an accomplished artist?
W: It’s tough to say. My uncle is a painter, and it took him 20 years to get to the point where he could do his art full-time.
M: I have always enjoyed oil painting, but the materials are so expensive. I had to give it up.
W: That’s too bad! I guess we all have to make sacrifices.
M: Maybe I just need a cheaper alternative. My niece has been doing a lot of chalk art on her blackboard and she even likes to show it to her best friend.
W: We should stop by the art supply store on the way home.
M: OK, as long as the cost of a cab is not too high. I am on a tight budget this month.
W: This one’s on me. You got the taxi last weekend.

M: Good evening, everyone. In tonight’s program-People in History, I’d like to tell you something about Stephanie Louise Kwolek. As a young girl, Stephanie was different from her classmates. She was an excellent reader with an extremely good memory. She was also very good at math. Stephanie’s love of learning came from her father. Every night when he came home from work, he sat and read a book or newspaper. He was a scientist who studies nature. Together, the father and the daughter would walk into the woods, collecting leaves, flowers, and seeds. Stephanie stuck her finds in a scrapbook. Her father helped her label and write descriptions of them. He died when she was 10, but their early explorations together inspired Stephanie to pursue a career in science. As Stephanie grew older, she decided to use science to help people and become a doctor. She studied chemistry in college, but when she graduated, she couldn’t afford to go to medical school. Instead, she worked and saved money. She got a job as a chemist at the DuPont Company. The job was supposed to be temporary, but Stephanie fell in love with it and never looked back. Her work at DuPont combined her childhood love of science and fabric with her interest in helping people and solving problems, and her creations would change the world.

Decades ago, my friend Caetlin received a peculiar assignment from the poet Robert L. Hass, who was then her undergraduate literature professor. He instructed each student to memorize three poems from The Norton Anthology of American Literature not for any urgent academic reason but to prepare them for their unavoidable future solitude, claiming that you’re going to be alone, and poetry is going to be all you have.
The act of memorizing a poem seemed curiously old-fashioned in an era when few of us encounter poetry at all. I mostly devoted myself to prose (散文). It was only in my 40s that I began to change my ways. It happened in a flight to Seattle. For hours, I read nothing else but a poem, sometimes going through, sometimes repeating over and over. At the end of my flight, I had all 40 lines in my head. Memorizing a great poem always begins as a crime. The boredom of repetition reduces the great charm it has. But as you keep trying, the lines finally come together again, and the scattered text transforms back into a treasure, often a more valuable one than it was before.
In other words, poetry perpetuates itself by becoming a part of those who read it. It can do so only because it is so specific, so entirely different, that taking it in expands our own sense of what we are.
Some of the poems I’ve memorized are already fading, and that’s fine. I know if I spend a little time with them, they’ll sing in me again. Others keep thumping (重击) in me like a new pulse. I won’t promise you that memorizing poetry will make your life better, but it will make you more: more in touch with language, with other minds, maybe with what you might yet become.
24. What did professor Robert assign his students to do?
A. Appreciate literature works.
B. Write poems to avoid future solitude.
C. Recite poems for potential loneliness.
D. Memorize poems for academic reasons.
25. Why does the author say memorizing a poem begins as a crime?
A. Repetition makes poems boring. B. It’s a way to kill time on the plane.
C. The author preferred prose to poetry. D. People hardly encountered poetry then.
26. What does the underlined word perpetuates in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Make something famous. B. Keep something alive.
C. Make something beautiful. D. Keep something special.
27. How does the author understand memorizing poetry?
A. It makes our life better. B. It leads to the pursuit of dream.
C. It expands our life properly. D. It enriches our memory definitely.
C 25. A 26. B 27. C
根据第一段中“He instructed each student to memorize three poems from The Norton Anthology of American Literature not for any urgent academic reason but to prepare them for their unavoidable future solitude, claiming that you’re going to be alone, and poetry is going to be all you have.(他指示每个学生从《诺顿美国文学选集》中背诵三首诗,不是出于任何紧迫的学术原因,而是为他们不可避免的未来孤独做准备,他声称你会孤独,而诗歌将是你仅有的东西)”可知,罗伯特教授让学生为潜在的孤独背诵诗歌。
根据第二段中“Memorizing a great poem always begins as a crime. The boredom of repetition reduces the great charm it has.(背诵一首伟大的诗总是始于一种“罪过”。重复带来的无聊感削弱了它原本的巨大魅力)”可知,作者说背诵诗歌始于一种“罪过”是因为重复让诗歌变得无聊。故选A项。
“In other words”意为“换句话说”,说明划线词所在句“In other words, poetry perpetuates itself by becoming a part of those who read it.(换句话说,诗歌通过成为读者的一部分而perpetuates自身)”是对前文意思的再解读。前文“Memorizing a great poem always begins as a crime. The boredom of repetition reduces the great charm it has. But as you keep trying, the lines finally come together again, and the scattered text transforms back into a treasure, often a more valuable one than it was before.(背诵一首伟大的诗总是一开始就犯了罪。
根据最后一段“I won’t promise you that memorizing poetry will make your life better, but it will make you more: more in touch with language, with other minds, maybe with what you might yet become.(我不会向你保证背诵诗歌会让你的生活更美好,但它会让你更丰富:更能接触语言、接触他人的思想,也许还能接触到你未来可能成为的样子)”可推知,作者认为背诵诗歌能让生活更丰富,能适当地拓展我们的生活。故选C项。

Payne, who rose to fame at just 16 as a band member in Britain in 2010, faced huge pressure from a young age, which impacted his mental health. In an attempt to handle the stresses of his early stardom, he turned to alcohol and drugs, and finally ended his own life. The tragedy of Payne’s death has sparked a wider debate within the music industry about the responsibilities that come with launching young stars into the spotlight.
In an interview with The Observer, British songwriter Guy Chambers suggested that under-18s should be banned from becoming pop stars. He pointed out many young stars were pushed into intense schedules, often performing up to 200 dates yearly in different places. “They’re always busy. These teens start relying on sleeping pills and stimulants (兴奋剂) to keep them up for the shows,” Chambers said.
Research has shown that young artists came easily down with mental issues. A 2021 study revealed that 80 percent of musicians between the ages of 18 and 25 struggled with anxiety and depression, according to the BBC.
While preventing under-18s from entering the music industry is one possible preventative measure, could Chambers’ idea work in practice? Chris Herbert, a former pop music manager, believes that enforcing a minimum age would be difficult to carry out. “The entertainment industry has a very long history of delivering successful stars of all ages, and there will always be a market that wants young artists,” Herbert told the BBC.
However, Herbert has called for a change in the way the industry operates. Instead of banning young artists, he advocates for providing them with the right education and support, including trained chaperones (陪护人), counselors, sociable working hours, meal breaks and regular rest.
28. What contributed to Payne’s struggles in the music industry?
A. Negative media coverage. B. Competition among peers.
C. The responsibilities on stars. D. The pressure of early fame.
29. Why does Guy Chambers suggest an age ban on young stars?
A. Their work affects their health. B. They manage their schedules poorly.
C. They lack necessary support systems. D. Their performances are far from good.
30. What’s Chris Herbert attitude to Chambers’ proposal?
A. Objective. B. Approved. C. Opposed. D. Indifferent.
31. Which of the following may be a solution for young artists according to the passage?
A. Improving their professional skills. B. Limiting their access to social media.
C. Promoting public awareness of the issue. D. Offering better mental health-related support.
D 29. A 30. C 31. D

根据第一段“Payne, who rose to fame at just 16 as a band member in Britain in 2010, faced huge pressure from a young age, which impacted his mental health. In an attempt to handle the stresses of his early stardom, he turned to alcohol and drugs, and finally ended his own life.(Payne于2010年在英国以乐队成员的身份在16岁时成名,他从小就面临着巨大的压力,这影响了他的心理健康。为了应对早期明星生涯带来的压力,他开始酗酒和吸毒,最终结束了自己的生命)”可知,早年成名的压力使Payne在音乐界举步维艰。故选D项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“In an interview with The Observer, British songwriter Guy Chambers suggested that under-18s should be banned from becoming pop stars.(在接受《观察家报》采访时,英国词曲作者Guy Chambers建议禁止18岁以下人成为流行歌星)”以及“They’re always busy. These teens start relying on sleeping pills and stimulants (兴奋剂) to keep them up for the shows,(他们总是很忙。这些青少年开始依靠安眠药和兴奋剂来让他们在节目中保持清醒)”可知,Guy Chambers认为这些年轻明星因工作繁忙而影响了健康,因此提出应该禁止未满18岁的人成为流行明星。故选A项。
根据第四段“While preventing under-18s from entering the music industry is one possible preventative measure, could Chambers’ idea work in practice? Chris Herbert, a former pop music manager, believes that enforcing a minimum age would be difficult to carry out.(虽然防止18岁以下的人进入音乐行业是一种可能的预防措施,但Chambers的想法在实践中可行吗?前流行音乐经理Chris Herbert认为,执行最低年龄将很难)”以及第五段“However, Herbert has called for a change in the way the industry operates.(然而,Herbert呼吁改变该行业的运作方式)”可知,Herbert认为执行最低年龄限制难以实施,且提议用其他方法代替。
根据最后一段“Instead of banning young artists, he advocates for providing them with the right education and support, including trained chaperones (陪护人), counselors, sociable working hours, meal breaks and regular rest.(他主张为年轻艺术家提供正确的教育和支持,包括训练有素的监护人、辅导员、社交工作时间、用餐时间和定期休息,而不是禁止他们)”可知,Herbert呼吁为年轻艺术家提供教育和支持,包括配备受过训练的陪护人和顾问。故选D项。
D
While interacting with others, we convey content with our words, primarily, and intent (意图) with our body language. And we humans care about intent even more than content because intent can either reinforce or destroy content.
One of the most debated areas of intent is finding whether or not someone is lying. An enormous amount of human effort has gone into increasing our ability to detect liars. The FBI and the CIA have studied the problem extensively. The great American psychologist Paul Ekman devoted much of his research to it, and any number of training programs to increase our accuracy in detecting lies. What has been the outcome? Lying studies determined that humans, after all the effort, are only about 54 percent accurate in detecting liars. That’s only slightly better than random guessing or coin-flipping.
The researchers tested experiment participants who watched videos where some speakers were lying and some were telling the truth. The participant caught the liars only 43 percent of the time and picked the truth-tellers only 48 percent of the time. That’s worse than flipping a coin! Then, the researchers tested the unconscious readings (潜意识反应) of the volunteers by measuring their response. They did much better.
Here’s a quick way to improve your lie detection right away. First of all, don’t look for specific “tells”. Look at the whole face and body, going soft focus, and ask yourself: sincere or insincere? Then, let your unconscious go to work.
You may judge whether the whole picture adds up to a consistent expression or reveals some inner tension. For example, is the mouth set in a smile, but the eyes are cold? Insincere. Just one principle. Ask yourself: Is this person sincere or insincere? And then take in the whole person. You’ll be able to tell most of the time.
32. Why does the author mention many studies in paragraph 2?
A. To give evidence of the finding.
B. To illustrate the difficulty of detecting lies.
C. To reveal scientists’ efforts to tackle problems.
D. To highlight the importance of random guessing.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The cause of the experiment.
B. The process of the experiment.
C. The innovation of the experiment.
D. The participants of the experiment.
34. What method is offered to detect lies?
A. Analyzing each gesture individually.
B. Looking for detailed clues on purpose.
C. Focusing on the specific content of the speech.
D. Combining unconscious with general impression.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Content or intent? B. What should we do with lies?
C. Sincere or insincere? D. How good are we at detecting liars?
B 33. B 34. D 35. D

根据第二段“An enormous amount of human effort has gone into increasing our ability to detect liars. That’s only slightly better than random guessing or coin-flipping.(大量的人力投入到提高我们检测说谎者的能力中,FBI和CIA 广泛研究了这个问题,美国伟大的心理学家Paul Ekman 也投入了大量研究,但结果是经过所有努力后,人类检测说谎者的准确率仅为54%,只比随机猜测或抛硬币略好)” 可推知,作者提到许多研究是为了说明检测谎言的困难。故选B。
【33题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“The researchers tested experiment participants who watched videos where some speakers were lying and some were telling the truth. The participant caught the liars only 43 percent of the time and picked the truth-tellers only 48 percent of the time. That’s worse than flipping a coin! Then, the researchers tested the unconscious readings (潜意识反应) of the volunteers by measuring their response. They did much better.(究人员对观看视频的实验参与者进行了测试,其中一些人在撒谎,一些人在说实话。
根据第四段的“First of all, don’t look for specific “tells”. Look at the whole face and body, going soft focus, and ask yourself: sincere or insincere? Then, let your unconscious go to work.(首先,不要刻意寻找特定的“迹象”。要全面观察面部和身体,采取柔和的焦点,并问自己:真诚还是不真诚?然后,让你的潜意识去发挥作用)”可知,测谎的方法是不要寻找特定的 “迹象”,而是看整个面部和身体,保持柔和的焦点,然后让潜意识去发挥作用。也就是将潜意识与总体印象相结合。故选 D。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段的“An enormous amount of human effort has gone into increasing our ability to detect liars. The FBI and the CIA have studied the problem extensively. The great American psychologist Paul Ekman devoted much of his research to it, and any number of training programs to increase our accuracy in detecting lies. What has been the outcome? Recently, there is a growing trend that many students turn to AI when they write a composition.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Recently, there is a growing trend that many students turn to AI when they write a composition. In my opinion, while AI is a beneficial tool, it is not wise of us to rely on it too much.
On one hand, AI can help us generate ideas and correct grammar mistakes, which provide convenience and improve efficiency. On the other hand, over-reliance on AI may hinder our ability to think independently and creatively. Writing is not just about putting words together; it’s about expressing our thoughts and emotions.
Therefore, I suggest AI should be used as a tool to assist us, rather than replace us. What’s more, we should focus on practicing our writing skills and cultivating our own unique writing style. Only in this way, can we truly improve our academic performance and personal growth.

Determined to make this dream a reality, Mat embarked on a journey to raise money for an operation that could give him back his mobility.
Mat’s efforts were tireless and innovative. He organized community events, set up an online donation page, and shared his story with local media outlets. Each contribution, no matter how small, brought him closer to his goal. And finally, the day arrived when he had accumulated the required sum, and the operation was scheduled. The anticipation of regaining his ability to walk filled Mat with excitement. He envisioned himself playing with friends, sprinting across playgrounds, and even competing in races, perhaps even securing a spot on the winner’s podium after his recovery.
Just a week before the long-awaited surgery, Mat came across a heart-wrenching story in the newspaper. It was about a five-year-old boy named Jamie, who had spent his entire life relying on a walking frame to move around, and his parents were tirelessly raising funds for an operation that could help their son walk independently.
Reading Jamie’s story, Mat felt an instant connection with the little boy, knowing all too well the challenges of not being able to walk. He was moved by Jamie’s determination and the love of his parents. Jamie’s story keeping ringing in Mat’s mind, he lost in thought.

The staff were touched by Mat’s selflessness and agreed to help facilitate the transfer of funds. Mat’s parents, though initially shocked, supported his decision, seeing the compassion and courage in their son’s eyes.

In a touching moment, Jamie, now able to walk independently, visited Mat with his parents, bringing tears of joy to both families.
Some of the poems I’ve memorized are already fading and that’s fine.
B Write poems to avoid future solitude.

A Objective. B. Approved. C. Opposed. D. Indifferent.
31. Which of the following may be a solution for young artists according to the passage?
A. Improving their professional skills. B. Limiting their access to social media.
C. Promoting public awareness of the issue. D. Offering better mental health-related support.
For example is the mouth set in a smile, but the eyes are cold?

When Mat was just 12 years old, his world was turned upside down after a terrible cycling accident left him with severe injuries. Determined to make this dream a reality, Mat embarked on a journey to raise money for an operation that could give him back his mobility.

The anticipation of regaining his ability to walk filled Mat with excitement.
