Cullymore was on Camelback Mountain one day in 2015 when a British tourist died after being lost nearly six hours in the July heat. That experience inspired him to start helping people caught unaware of the danger of Mother Nature.“They underestimate (低估) the mountain, and they get themselves in trouble, ” he said.If a hiker has a flushed face and is not sweating any more, he reaches into his backpack, pulls out a bottle, and hands it to the person.“It's misleading that we're in the middle of the city. But the truth is, you can die up here, and nobody would know.” 4.What do we know from Paragraph 1? Aron's life changed on April 26th, 2003, upon facing the event that threatened to take his life, and almost took it.He was hiking through the Blue John Canyon and he accidentally displaced a huge rock he was climbing down from. The rock caught his right hand in between itself and the canyon wall. Aron had decided to go on the adventure alone and hadn't informed anybody about it.So, when he was unable to free his right hand, he felt he would be stuck forever in there. He tried hard to get his hand out but failed, and screaming for help was of no use either. Moreover, he didn't want to wear himself out as shouting for help would take a lot of energy, which was essential(重要的)for surviving the unfortunate event for a long period of time. After a couple of days, he knew it was impossible for him to set himself free from an 800-pound rock.He decided to cut off his right hand.He had a blunt(钝的)pocket knife with him, which wasn't sharp enough to cut through the bone. Some time passed and his water and food supply ended. He carved his name, date of birth and a possible date of death on the stone. But luckily he got a strange idea that he could use the torque(扭转力)and his bones to separate his arm from his body. With the help of his very limited tool, he finally succeeded and walked out of the canyon, bleeding in large amounts.Fortunately, a holidaying family saw him and gave him food and water, and then took him to a hospital. Or the wonder of going somewhere new and different, climbing a mountain or enjoying extreme sports like snowboarding or parachuting. These are the adventures we “thrill seekers” live for. But sometimes we also need to know when to slow down. Recently, I went quad biking(驾驶四轮摩托车)—or ATV driving(驾驶全地形四轮越野机车) —on a dirt track in the mountains outside of Beijing. After a brief instructional exercise and what seemed like lots of waiting, we put on our helmets, sped up our engines and got onto the track. The sound of the engine roaring was thrilling. As I got more confident, I couldn't help overtaking other drivers whenever I got the chance. Finally, the way forward opened up and I sped ahead of the others. I turned toward a small hill and raced down. As I soon found out, this was a big mistake. My ATV turned over at full speed. Luckily, I knew it was happening and pushed myself out of the way of the falling ATV. Had I not, I probably would have broken my leg beneath the weight of the ATV or even lost it. I might have even broken my neck. It ended up turning out fine, apart from some pain in my chest for a week or so. This was a pleasant surprise for my friend. After seeing the accident, he said to me, “Dude, I thought you were dead.” Perhaps I could have very well died, if I hadn't been lucky that day. That event was one I'll always remember for the adventure and the near-death experience. It's good to be adventurous, but it's still really important to be wise and careful too. So, go on adventures—but be smart while you're on them! 12.What did the author do before starting his quad biking adventure? A.He checked the engine of his ATV repeatedly. B.He shared his experience with other drivers. C.He received some guidance and waited. D.He made a personal survey of the track. 根据第二段“After a brief instructional exercise and what seemed like lots of waiting, we put on our helmets, sped up our engines and got onto the track.(经过简短的指导练习和漫长的等待后,我们戴上头盔,加速引擎,上了赛道。)” C 13.What does the underlined word “overtaking” in paragraph 2 most likely mean? A.Following. B.Directing. C.Going past. D.Talking with. 根据第二段“I sped ahead of the others(我在其他人前面加速前进)”可知,作者忍不住超过其他的人,因此overtaking和going past意思相近。故选C。 答案 C 14.What happened when the author tried to race down a small hill? A.He hit his friend's ATV. B.He slowed down gradually. C.He broke his neck and leg. D.He lost control of his ATV. 根据第二段“I turned toward a small hill and raced down. As I soon found out, this was a big mistake. My ATV turned over at full speed.(我转向一座小山,冲了下来。我很快发现,这是一个很大的错误。我的全地形车全速翻了。)”可知,当作者试图从一座小山上冲下来时他的全地形车失控了。故选D。 答案 D 15.What's the main message the author wants to convey in the text? A.Accidents are a natural part of adventures. B.It is fun to live an adventurous life. C.Never be afraid of pushing our limits in life. D.We should keep safety in mind while on an adventure. 根据最后一段“It's good to be adventurous, but it's still really important to be wise and careful too. So, go on adventures—but be smart while you're on them!(勇于冒险是件好事,但明智和谨慎也很重要。所以,去冒险吧——但在冒险的时候要聪明!)”可知,作者在文章中想要传达的主要信息是我们在冒险时要牢记安全。故选D。 答案 D 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 (江苏五市十一校高一联考)Wouldn't it be great to spend a few days in the woods walking around and exploring nature? 16 Simply getting from A to B isn't as easy as it sounds, especially in the wilderness. Luckily for all of us, there are some excellent tips that can help you when you're lost in the forest. Stay calm. 17 If you don't stay calm, you won't be able to think clearly and make good decisions. Remember if your heart is racing and your blood pressure has skyrocketed(剧增), it will be much harder for you to survive. Stay positive. Remember that you're out in the forest for a reason, whether it's to experience new things, build memories with friends and family, or simply relax and enjoy life. Remembering what brought you to the forest in the first place will help keep your mind positive. 18 Build a shelter and start a fire. Your first order of business when you lose your way is to build a shelter and start a fire. 19 By morning, everything might look better. Plus, if you have survived until daybreak, there's a chance that search parties looking for you probably know where to find you. 20 It's not easy to wait for help without complaining or becoming annoyed when you lose your way in the forest. However, it's much safer than wandering around aimlessly. If you don't want to get hurt by animals or pass out from fatigue(疲乏), it's best not to make decisions hurriedly. Survival takes time! A.Be hurry. B.Be patient. C.Of course, it would, but it's easy to get lost. D.Backpackers are usually very adventurous types. E.Panic is often what leads you to lose your way in the forest. We had many exciting activities, one of which was deep sea diving.During the diving, we enjoyed the undersea beauty and watched the marine life which we had never seen so close. What impressed me most was the exploration of the ruins of ancient civilizations under the sea.Seeing those ruins, I couldn't help wondering what the ancient people's life was like and what they experienced later. As far as I'm concerned, this travel broadened our horizons as well as helped us learn more about the sea. It was a hot and dry summer. The beach near the city was crowded with a lot of people, from little kids to the aged, who planned to beat the heat in the water. They enjoyed themselves leisurely. Some were playing beach volleyball, some were making sand castles, and some were doing sunbathing. Among them, there was a group of 10 boys aged between 12 to 15 years old trying to take an adventure. At first, they intended to hire a yacht(游艇), but due to the wind and the waves, the yacht rides were forbidden on that day. After a while, the boys decided to challenge themselves to race in the sea. They made a deal that the one who swam the fastest would win the race and deserve a huge treat from the group. Most of the boys agreed, except for a few.A boy in the group warned them of the danger, as the waves weren't constant. Some boys began to hesitate, but some didn't listen to him and started their race. Everything went so well.Suddenly, waves from the sea rose a lot and most of the boys in that young group struggled to reach the beach. However, three boys who considered themselves very brave, decided to ignore the waves and swim further out to sea for more excitement and fun. Although many people on the beach shouted at them and asked them to swim back immediately, they continued to swim further from the beach. The wind became stronger;all of a sudden, one boy was washed away by a rising wave and the other two boys were so scared that they shouted for help and swam as fast as they could to the beach. However, no one on the beach risked his life to save the boy as the waves were so alarming;and the crowd were asked to move to a safe place. Paragraph 1: From the crowd on the beach, a young man stood out.
