When people were asked what were the top boring inventions, nearly a quarter of them chose the karaoke machine, 17 percent said 24-hour sports channels, 12 percent chose video games, while 11 percent said mobile phones and seven percent said alarm clocks. “Seeing the karaoke machine at the top of the list made me smile, ”said Kane Kramer, a director of the British Inventors Society.“When people are singing karaoke they are enjoying themselves, but as a member of the audience you are just watching somebody who can't perform, and have to bear the unpleasant songs. This doesn't fit social orderliness. You might have 10 people who want to sing some karaoke, which means 150 people have to suffer. But the crazy thing is that people still go to be an audience for other people's inability to sing.” Karaoke has turned into an industry with billions of dollars since it was invented in 1971 by Daisuke Inoue, a Japanese club keyboard instrument player, when he wanted to provide music for a customer who wanted to sing on a company trip. When people were asked which gadgets invented they would like to see in the future, 18 percent said a robot cleaner, 16 percent said a time machine. 1.gadget n. 1.Why is the karaoke machine regarded as the most boring gadget in Britain? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ 2.When a person is enjoying himself by singing karaoke, how many have to suffer? ____________ Ⅰ. 压力 2.________ adj. 重点短语 1.____ time 随着时间的推移 2.think __ 想到;想起 3.as well __ 同(一样也);和;还 4.__ addition 除此之外,另外 5.thanks __ 幸亏;由于 6.in terms __ 就…… 而言 7.be capable __ 有…… ______ 2.compass n. ________________ 3.compute v. ______ Ⅳ.重点句型 1._______________________ here. 2.And now, we _________________________________________________. 3.It is capable of using GPS technology to travel to different places, _______________ ____________________________. 4.So _______________ inspires us to invent things? 5.But ______________________ is that we have an incredible desire to think and create, and that's the real spirit of invention. [整体理解] Ⅰ.Scan the text and find out the main idea of the text. [1] Welcome, Richard! Richard:Thank you. It's a pleasure to be here.[2] [1]whose引导非限制性定语从句,修饰先行词Dr Richard Fairhurst, 并在从句中作定语。 [2]句中it作形式主语,不定式to be here为真正的主语。 Interviewer: I guess you have been asked about the title of your book before. It suggests that the present day is a new age for inventions, but many people might think that the great age of invention is over.[3] [3] 本句为but连接的并列句。 Richard: Well, that's an interesting point. There have been golden ages of invention throughout history②.Think of③ the four great inventions in Ancient④ China:gunpowder⑤,papermaking⑥,printing⑦ and the compass⑧.These things changed the world forever. Then there were the great Western inventions:the steam engine⑨,the telephone and the radio. And now, we find ourselves in the great new age of technology. Interviewer:So are most of the new great inventions tech-based⑩? Richard:A lot, yes.For example, advances⑪ in virtual⑫ reality and wearable tech⑬,as well as⑭ the flexible⑮ battery⑯,mean we should soon be seeing further developments. In addition⑰,important advances have been made in medicine and environmental⑱ science thanks to increasing computer power. Interviewer: Can you give us some examples? Richard:Sure.New inventions like 3D printers have been used⑲to make replacement⑳ hearts and bone parts. In terms of the environment, it is now possible to create an intelligent walking house. It is capableof using GPS technology to travel to different places, with computing technology controlling its “legs”.[4]What's more, huge advances in solar technology mean it can be eco-friendly, too. [4]using GPS technology为动名词短语,作介词of的宾语;to travel to… Interviewer: Impressive stuff! I've also been told that you're an inventor yourself. Is that correct? Richard:Yes, I am, but I'm only one member of a big team—most inventors now work as part of big international teams. Interviewer: I see.So what is it that inspires us to invent things?[5] [5]该句为强调句型的特殊疑问句形式。 Richard: Most inventions start with recognising a problem that needs a solution. This was no doubt the reason behind the invention of the wheel in ancient times, which much later developed into the car. Now, reduced energy supplies and environmental pollution have led to more advances in the technology of new energy vehicles. But what remains important is that we have an incredible desire to think and create, and that's the real spirit of invention. Interviewer: One last question. This is the one everyone really wants to know:will anybody ever invent a time machine? Richard: I think you've been watching too many movies! Nothing like this has been invented yet and I'd say we're a long way from an invention like that at the moment! But, as they say, “Never say never!” [对应学生用书第44页] [核心词汇] 1.flexible adj.易弯曲的,柔韧的 (教材P35)For example, advances in virtual reality and wearable tech, as well as the flexible battery, mean we should soon be seeing further developments. [归纳拓展] (1)a flexible schedule 灵活的时间安排 a more flexible approach 更灵活的方法 a flexible body 柔韧的身体 (2)flexibly adv. I'm glad that he dealt with the problem flexibly. It's important to note that the increased flexibility didn't encourage them to work around the clock. [活学活用] (1)单句语法填空 ①We should use our schedule ________ (flexible) to balance our academic and spare time. ②Employees expect ___________(flexible) in the work-place. Mothers should _______________________ to make it easier to care for their children. 2.in addition 除此之外,另外 (教材P35)In addition, important advances have been made in medicine and environmental science thanks to increasing computer power. [归纳拓展] (1)in addition to 除…… 加起来 add …to … 把…… 里 add up to 加起来共计/达(不用于被动语态) add to 增加;增添 In addition to bread, I bought you some milk. As is known to all, good friends add happiness and value to life. The engine of the ship was out of order and the bad weather added to the helplessness of the crew at sea. [活学活用] (1)单句语法填空 ①In ________ (add), most newspapers had little in them that would appeal to a mass audience. ②In addition __ the school, the village has a clinic which was also built with government's support. (2)用add及其短语的适当形式填空 ③The president said it was not easy to manage a company, ______ that the financial crisis ________ the difficulties. The week before, he ________ all the expenses and the total ___________ more than 100,000 yuan. 3.desire n.渴望,欲望 (教材P36) But what remains important is that we have an incredible desire to think and create, and that's the real spirit of invention. [归纳拓展] (1)have a strong desire (2)desire v. 渴望;期望 desire to do sth. 渴望做某事 desire sb.to do sth. 想要某人做某事 desire that…(should) do sth. In order to achieve goals, you must have a strong desire to do so. We desire that immediate help (should) be given to the local villagers who have been trapped by the flood. [活学活用] (1)单句语法填空 ①We always desire _______ (live) in peace with our neighbors. ②He expressed a strong desire that measures _____________________ (take) to stop pollution. ③He has a desire ___ success though he has failed many times. Everyone ________________________________________ while success only belongs to the hard-working people. [重点句型] (教材P36)So what is it that inspires us to invent things? ②一般疑问句形式为“Is/Was it…that/who…?”。 ③特殊疑问句形式为“特殊疑问词+is/was+it+that…?”。 ④not…until句型的强调句型为“It is/was not until…that…”。 Was it because he behaved badly that he was punished by his teacher? Why was it that he was punished by his teacher? It was not until the teacher came in that the students stopped talking. [活学活用] (1)单句语法填空 ①It is my mother __________ gives me encouragement when I meet with difficulties. ②It was your constant encouragement ____ inspired me to be confident. ③___ was only after the war broke out that people realized the importance of peace. ________________ sparked your interest in motoring? 2.what引导主语从句 (教材P36)But what remains important is that we have an incredible desire to think and create, and that's the real spirit of invention. Nobody knows what will happen next. (what 引导宾语从句,并在从句中作主语) Mary is no longer what she was ten years ago. (what引导表语从句,并在从句中作表语) I have no idea what we should do next. [活学活用] (1)单句语法填空 ①____ matters is not just the outside of a string of symbols, but the inside too, not just how they are arranged but ____ they mean. ②It was a pity ____ his ideas didn't gain popular support. ___________________ seems better than what we already have. $$
