According to the data from NASA, the ocean has risen almost 10 centimeters since it started checking water levels in 1993. And scientists say sea levels may rise by more than 2 meters by 2100. This is a serious problem as sea levels rise, and areas close to oceans will be more at risk of flooding (洪水).
Netherlands has some of the most powerful flood defenses (防御) in the world. Without them, a third of the country would be underwater. Netherlands also has a growing number of floating buildings, which can move up and down with the changing seas.
The city of Rotterdam is home to the world’s largest floating office building, as well as a floating event space and what’s been called “the world’s first floating farm”. And in the northern part of Amsterdam, the country’s capital, is Schoonship—a neighborhood where over 140 people live in floating houses. The neighborhood was built on a canal in an old manufacturing area, and has 30 buildings, including a shared meeting space.
Schoonschip is designed to be sustainable (可持续的). Each building has its own heat pump and solar panels, and residents (居民) share things like bicycles, cars and food. “I think it’s kind of strange that building on water is not the first choice worldwide,” Schoonschip resident Siti Boelen told Yale Environment 360.
These kinds of neighborhoods might soon be found more often outside of Netherlands, since Dutch engineers are now working on floating projects in other countries—including what is promised to be the world’s first floating city in the Maldives. But there are some disadvantages that come with living in floating houses. They need more protection and care than houses on land—and strong winds or stormy weather can make them rock back and forth, which can make people inside them feel sick!
19 The writer tells us the fact of rising sea levels in Paragraph 1 by ________.
A. telling stories B. asking questions C. listing numbers D. giving opinions
20. What will happen if there are no flood defenses in Netherlands?
A. Oceans will be more at risk of flooding. B. Some land of Netherlands will disappear.
C. The sea levels will be higher than before. D. Fewer floating buildings will be built.
21. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE about Schoonschip?
A. Schoonschip is the biggest floating office building worldwide.
B. People in Schoonschip share everything in their daily life.
C. Siti Boelen thinks it’s strange to have buildings floating on water.
D. We will find more neighborhoods like Schoonschip around the world.
22. What is the writer’s opinion about the floating houses?
A. He thinks the floating houses are harmful to the sea.
B. He thinks it’s comfortable to live in the floating houses.
C. He thinks the floating houses need further improvements.
D. He thinks it’s difficult to build the floating houses.
【答案】19. C 20. B 21. D 22. C

Like many kids, last summer I learned to ride a bike. Only when I am in my 30s.
When I was a child, I had no one to teach me how to ride a bike. My mom never learned. My parents divorced (离婚) when I was 4. In order to perform parental responsibility, my father bought a bicycle for my brother and me to share.
My mum remarried again. When my brother and I were laughed at because we were the only kids past 6 years old who still depended on training wheels, my stepdad removed them. But in doing that, I lost interest and trust in the activity. I was so afraid—I was quite tall for my age at 7 and I was worried I would fall off. I thought I was too old to learn too.
Not knowing how to ride didn’t trouble me at first. But I met some problems when we moved to the countryside, where bicycles were popular. On trips to the convenience store to buy candy with my friends, I was always the last to arrive, on foot. By then, I was 12 years old.
In my early 30s, I remember feeling envious as I watched children as young as 3 learn to balance on bikes. Some of them were my neighbors, whom I would babysit sometimes. As for me, I also really wanted to ride bikes as easily as them. Then something changed. The fear within was still there, but something much stronger was taking over.
I decided to join a women’s bike-riding workshop. There, I stood in a park, decided to overcome my fear (恐惧). Meeting women from different backgrounds all seeking cycling skills for various reasons, strengthened my determination. Before long, I was riding confidently, experiencing the joy of riding. I bought my own bike, not just for getting around but to get the lost time back. It wasn’t just a bike, it represented a chance I missed earlier. I completely lost myself in the experience, enjoying the scenery and the breeze on my face. Ultimately, buying a bike wasn’t just an investment (投资) in transportation, it was an investment in reconnecting with my past—a childhood memory long withheld (保留).
27. Why did the writer lose confidence in riding a bike when she was young?
A. She felt lonely without any friends. B. She felt angry of the laugh from other kids.
C. She was sorry for the divorce of her parents. D. She was afraid to ride without training wheels.
28. How did the writer feel when she saw the children riding bikes at the age of 30?
A. She expected to buy a new bike. B. She hated learning to ride bikes.
C. She hoped to play with the children. D. She wanted to ride bikes as others.
29. What is the real meaning of the bike to the writer?
A. It’s a way to recall her past time. B. It’s a connection with others.
C. It’s a way of transportation. D. It’s a symbol of grown-up.
30. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

19. The writer tells us the fact of rising sea levels in Paragraph 1 by ________.
A. telling stories B. asking questions C. listing numbers D. giving opinions
20. What will happen if there are no flood defenses in Netherlands?

Like many kids, last summer I learned to ride a bike. Only when I am in my 30s.
When I was a child, I had no one to teach me how to ride a bike. My mom never learned. My parents divorced (离婚) when I was 4. In order to perform parental responsibility, my father bought a bicycle for my brother and me to share.
My mum remarried again. When my brother and I were laughed at because we were the only kids past 6 years old who still depended on training wheels my stepdad removed them.
29 What is the real meaning of the bike to the writer?
A. It’s a way to recall her past time. B. It’s a connection with others.
C. It’s a way of transportation. D. It’s a symbol of grown-up.
30. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
