1 Reading: Chinese New Year
In 1069, Wang Anshi, a famous poet and statesman (政治家) of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), wrote the poem Yuan Ri to celebrate the new year. The poem has become a classic expression of hope and is still remembered and read by Chinese people during New Year celebrations, including the upcoming one. This hope is rooted in the idea that the New Year marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring, which is why it is called the “Spring Festival.”
The traditional Chinese calendar combines both lunar (moon-based) and solar (sun-based) cycles. Its main purpose is to match farming and social activities with the natural seasons. The New Year is the beginning of the farming season, as the ground begins to melt and life starts to grow. This is also why the Chinese Lunar New Year should not be simply called “Lunar New Year.” Instead, we’d better call it “Chinese New Year.”
The customs that Wang described in his poem are still very much alive today. The reason is that even though China is no longer a farming society, the desire for warmth, the happiness of being with family, the connection to tradition, and the hope for a fresh start all continue to be important. These are all beautifully shown through the celebration of the Chinese New Year.

With cracker’s cracking noise the old year passed away;
The vernal breeze brings us warm wine and warm spring day.
The rising sun sheds light on doors of each household,
New peachwood charm is put up to replace the old.
